OK, agree with that. PDU off certainly makes the decision tree more interesting and I've been pretty cautious in my first game as there's no going back if you do a reflexive upgrade[&:].

Lokasenna -> RE: Manila Falls (2/12/2016 12:34:07 AM)

Use it as second-tier training - after the 100% training in Escort in Japan (or wherever), shift the pilots into this unit and use them strafing the Chinese to increase their Defense skill, etc.

Encircled -> RE: Manila Falls (2/12/2016 7:14:58 AM)

Trainer. I'd have probably left more than one squadron to train to be honest.

You do get so many sqds that upgrade to the IIb

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (2/12/2016 12:43:12 PM)

Allies sweep the star for the third straight day, and finally bomb it. They lose 1 bomber, flying at about 10K, and inflict 200 losses. Another AA unit joined there today so perhaps they will do better on the morrow.

You can see the Allies really flexing their muscles...the Allies have broken off one unit east of Dacca. I have something there, but cannot click on the troop to see what. Phantom? Anyhow, that unit is 8-9 hexes from the Magwe/Mandalay bombing runways and so can be heavily targeted.

I am thinking on trying to naval bombard Calcutta. Hit Diamond Harbor with battleships and by the air, and run some cruisers past to shell Calcutta? You think that would work. Would be a two day mission or more.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (2/12/2016 12:49:03 PM)

The 12th Division Amphibious Fleet.

When the unit rounds Ominato, it will be augmented by a few more PBs. I could have easily shipped these guys by transport, but I want to get a feel for how many xak-t I will need. The Invasion groups will have probably 50% more xak-t as you see here to speed unloading. Plus I will be doling out my AK-t, one for each invading division.

I also want to see the amount of disruption they incur on their ship transport.

Some troops are going to Pearl Harbor area, others to Alaska.

Encircled -> RE: Manila Falls (2/12/2016 12:58:44 PM)

Probably worth a go, but beware op points being used up.

If you can put a heavy LRCAP over the crusiers and use slightly more expendable ones (if such a thing exists, an expendable IJA Heavy Crusier!)

My experience of bombarding Calcutta that you need to be holding Diamond Harbour then you can bombard it every day. That really does make a difference.

Seems wasteful in supply ... but I will give it a go.[;)] We will see what 15kg gp bombs can do to Chinese troops in the open. We will see how fast they train up.

Inflicted almost 1000 losses on troop in Sian this turn due to bombing. On one hand, it is some of the most effective bombing I have done, on the other hand I rue the supply drain. I have 100 Oscar IIb strafing, 42 Oscar IIa bombing from 2000 feet plus Sonia, Sallies, Lilly and Ann.

Sonia's are decent planes in China against either moving troops, troops in the open, or airfields....In some respects I like them more than Ann (except for the range).

I converted all my Oscar IIa squadrons to IIb that can, but the large 1st Sentai will stay IIa for quite a while (till Frank A I recall), so they will bomb the Chinese till then at 2000 feet.

I upgraded and got my first armored Helen unit in Hankow a few days back. Will be sending them to Mandalay for action against the Commonwealth.

fulcrum28 -> RE: Manila Falls (2/12/2016 1:03:31 PM)

Lowpe, how do you highlight the contour (borders) of the hexes (in green, or red) that contain ground units? is it done manually with paint?

Thanks. I am going to prep a division for Diamond Harbor...and I think I am going to prep troops for Ceylon and see if I can get Jocke to divert some troops.

Here is hoping that Japanese bombers can inflict some damage today. [;)]

"W" key. Very useful, and Michael will chide at me if I don't use it on my maps.[:D][:D]

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (2/12/2016 2:27:36 PM)

The three highlighted units each get reinforcements in 6 months or so to make full divisions. Of the three, the 61st Division is the weakest, suitable for garrison duty only while the 43rd and 47th are much better. None of them have good starting experience, making them weak choices for relatively early buyout.

Two are General, and the third can be switched to General for 1/3 of the PP as it is a switch in the same command unit.

Right now they are all air mobile (to bases in the General), and I will be flying them to Hokkaido starting with the elements of the 61st Division.

Other options for these three units is to switch over an Island (one of the Bonins usually) and fly them there.

In this scenario type 2 game, Hokkaido starts with quite a few engine factories, and having recently suffered from a Hokkaido Hurricane assault, I want to take measures to insure that Jocke doesn't go there or at least it is much better defended.

A slow, lazy airlift by my two Theresa squadrons is just the ticket to bulk up Hokkaido's defense.

Not much more wasteful than having them fly CAP for experience gains, IMO. The low load cost of the Oscar means not many more supplies would be burned.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (2/12/2016 4:56:06 PM)

Thrilling!

Japanese medium bombers knocked out about 45 afvs in the 254th Armored Brigade today. That is one of the Commonwealth's bad boys...big and armored and mobile. No enemy CAP present.

Today there are a few targets, the three Allied (Oz) units forcing the river near Darjeeling perhaps, the 1 Commonwealth unit above Dacca or the 254th again.

Not much flak at the 254th armored as a few Nicks strafed.

Japan has 1300 AV at Dacca behind level 3 forts. A fair amount of artillery, but no tanks. All of Japan's tanks are to the north.

I think he is getting ready for an air drop. He has Chindits by now, doesn't he...August of 1942.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (2/12/2016 8:24:29 PM)

Last day of August, 1942

Surprisingly, the Allied bombers and fighters rest in India. The Japanese continue to maul and recon Allied troops by air bombardment.

The 254th Armored gets hit hard again.[;)] Even poorly trained Oscar pilots dropping bombs from 2000 feet can destroy afvs.

However the intelligence provided by the air assault is grim for Japan.

[image]local://upfiles/44178/FA33A8F88E854ECF85020EB4E1DB8D63.jpg[/image]

We knock out about 50 AFVs, about one half destroyed.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (2/12/2016 8:25:44 PM)

Allies bombard at Dacca. Ugly concentration of Allied troops. Where is my x3 terrain?[:D]

Dacca is lost. Will be..[:D]

Must be thankful the Allies are allocating a lot of troops here, plus that last turn he didn't use his bombers and fighters or paratroops.

tiemanjw -> RE: Manila Falls (2/13/2016 12:37:50 AM)

Switch some of the units that missed into reserve mode. They will pursue (i think, not sure because of the river) while the ones in combat force a retreat.

They might.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (2/13/2016 8:02:04 PM)

Here we are Sept 1, 1942

Allied intercepts point to a very busy day for Allied Forces and not just at Dacca. Hurricanes sweep Dacca, and then Lightning sweeps Coal Harbor.

Can bombers be far behind.

Wellingtons and Blenheims at Dacca. At Coal Harbor, the big boys!

Da bombers keep coming, and coming.

It is starting to feel like national pick on Lowpe day. Make that International Pickon Lowpe Day.

Then this bit of nice news filters back from the front...prior to the excitement at Dacca.

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the Chinese Cavalry. They usually start with pretty good morale and seem tougher, albeit smaller, than your typical Chinese Corp. Feels good to see their backsides.[:)]

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (2/13/2016 8:18:07 PM)

Huzzah, we caught up to him. I had a few units on reserve pursuit but I think they failed their roll.

The Big Event: Dacca. Bombed by Mitchels, Blenheims. Swept by Hurricanes, Warhawks and Lightnings. Outnumbered 2-1.

Are you ready to rumble....

Didn't even reduce the forts. But the fight has only just started!

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (2/13/2016 8:23:52 PM)

I have seen worse.[:D] Jocke has yet to have a successful Lightning sweep. Don't worry, you AFB's, he will someday.

Some AF General will lose his job calling for a raid like that on Coal Harbor. Only 6 Airport Service Damage. And the lost pilots, oh my. Oh well, the Allies have a limitless pool of planes and pilots so no biggy after all.[;)]

Even still, most of his devices are destroyed. Even if that estimate of casualties is 2x the actual, that's a lot.

Look more closely. I think your guys didn't pursue because there are still Allied units in the hex that did not retreat. You don't control that hex side (presumably he controls the hex until you evict him completely) so they can't pursue.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (2/13/2016 10:45:57 PM)

Correct, again Lok.[sm=happy0065.gif]

Two units didn't retreat.

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Manila Falls (2/13/2016 11:55:29 PM)

I envy you Lowpe. How you do it and never seem to get frustrated is admirable. As always, your AAR's are a pleasure to read.
