I find it a little strange to see that the Allies are throwing the towel in already. The most important thing here is US entry. Is it that bad that the US can't DoW Japan soon? If it is, the Allies might be right to surrender. If not, than we are looking at a morale issue here.

The USSR can come back out of Siberia without the Caucasian oil fields under their control, if the Japanese can be killed of fast by the US. And looking at this game, it appears the Chinese and the Soviets already did a very good job in making sure the Japanese economy is a total mess...

AllenK -> RE: AllenK vs Mayhemizer III: Oil be back. (2/20/2016 1:54:33 PM)

Japan has already DoW'd US. There's about a 20% chance of US DoW'ing Germany/Italy.

Thank you all for commenting. I think I can say at this moment that Germany performed little better than in our last AAR.

Thanks for the screen shots, maybe you could build a few railroads and get some of those Chinese units to help out in southern Russia :)

Not sure how you could breach that European wall.

You're welcome.

Yes, I'm not sure either. At least not in the time frame required but I would welcome other views on this.

Centuur -> RE: AllenK vs Mayhemizer III: Oil be back. (2/21/2016 11:58:06 AM)

If I look at the map, I conclude that this game is far from an Axis victory. The CW has complete control of the Med. The Italian fleet seems to be lying on the bottom of the Med. Even with the losses in Albania (which the CW can replace), things are looking pretty good for the Allies there. Sure, the US can't DoW the Euroaxis, but the moment they can, Italy is gone...

Japan is a complete mess. It is going to lose mainland Asia to the Chinese. The Nationalists should think about moving into Indo China and further towards Siam and ultimately Singapore. The Commies can take out Korea and start moving to Vlad. Use half the Chinese buildpoints to go to the USSR in trade and use the other half to start building the Chinese airforce. Nothing better than the Soviet Lend leased Chinese TB-3 bomber flying to bomb Japan out of Korea. Japan needs at east 4 FTR's to be able to cover all their precious factories...
The perimeter on the US side of Japan seems to be in good order, but due to the Chinese/Soviet expanse on mainland Asia, they can't replace losses fast enough. Their economy lies already in shambles. I expect the Japanese to be conquered end of 1943, if the US goes all out for Japan (and they should do so, since the conquest of Japan means that the USSR gets saved).

The only Axis power which does somewhat allright is Germany. I say somewhat on purpose. If you look at the map, the German army approaching the Urals hasn't got any aircraft and is almost equal in size to the combined Soviet units in the region already. That's not a force which can succesfully engage the Soviets.
The Turks are still not in the game (but they will be). The way to proceed with the USSR is to withdraw the Caucasian army towards Baku (so that the Turks cannot take the place if they enter the war) and make Germany fight for those four oilfields. Baku itself is a very good defendable hex, since it can only be attacked out of one other hex. All USSR reinforcements should go to the Urals. Build FTR's, since it will take the Germans a long time to get their airforce to the Urals. The only thing I can't see if the Soviets have saved oil (they should have a small stockpile somewhere), which they need to keep their FTR's flying.
Personally, I've seen the Soviet come back out of Siberia, after losing the oil fields at Baku to Germany, because of the fast demise of Japan. This game seems to be going that way too.

Thanks Cetuur, very helpful to get a fresh perspective.

You've echoed my thoughts on what the next moves for the Chinese would be, although I had't considered sending BP's to USSR. I don't suppose that comes too often in play.

I guess going all out for Japan is basically continuing the 'Japan First' strategy that was initiated when USSR DoW'd Japan, although at the time I hadn't thought of it in those terms.

I've got a weeks break from gaming now due to work commitments (but will be following the forum still). Based upon your advice, I may well be back with renewed resolve to see this through.

I haven't heard any calorific-ally challenged members of the opposite sex starting to warble yet.

Thank you all so much for posting this extensive AAR. Working on the road with little chance to play World in Flames, this thread has been one of my go-to Internet spots when I have a little down-time, and with everything else going on in my life, that can be quite a nice thing to have.

While piloting the Russians, I have come back from Siberia after a 10 HQ kitchen-sink 1941 Barbarossa. The key was taking Harbin from the Japanese in 1940. This created a rail link to China - all Chinese BPs went to the USSR most turns, once the mortal peril of the USSR became clear. So did Mao and the 3 best ChiComms INF. Though they could not attack German units, they were very useful reinforcements that could block German advances east. Japan was cowed into crazy fear by +2 Assaults from the Nationalists and turned turtle.

Turkey did join that war but was taken out by the 1st Allied Parachute Army. Yes, Army - all of the US/UK Parachute units operated en masse, backed by the numerous long-range Allied air assets. Meanwhile the UK finally learned to attack German units at +2 and +3, Russkie / Chinese style, and got ashore in France. When the game ended in Nov/Dec 44, I was closer to Berlin than the West.

I was surprised in this game that the Germans and the Russians both stood on the Don for so long. Germany could have aligned Turkey a few turns ago if it operated in true Blitzkrieg style - pin the opponent and keep pushing on with the spearheads. Someone discounted Axis control of the Middle East - this is very serious. An Axis owning the Caucasus plus Iran/Iraq/Saudi Arabia can eventually stand up to even Uncle Sam, and might start building factories. The invasion of Albania was a good partial distraction for the Axis but the western Allies should have been preparing to campaign in the deserts of the Middle East, or both campaigns actually.

The nice thing about electronic games of World in Flames is that anyone can explore alternative outcomes...

The AAR's by AllenK and Mayhemizer are the only reason I visit the Matrix site on a daily basis. Thank you for playing the 2d10! If it wasn't for their AAR's, I would visit Matrix maybe once per month just to get Steve's MWiF monthly update.

AllenK -> RE: AllenK vs Mayhemizer III: Oil be back. (2/22/2016 5:25:07 PM)

Thank you all for your appreciation and continued support.

From the advice received I'm convinced in theory this game isn't a lost cause and there's still plenty to play for. Whether practice can match the theory, I don't know but there's only one way to find out. Play on and see what I can learn along the way.

Nice! Thanks for keeping this going. I'm getting my daily fix of WiF through this AAR. :)

Thank you for following! German tanks will be rolling in a week, Japanese forces are ready for final battle and inevitable destruction...

brian brian -> RE: AllenK vs Mayhemizer III: Oil be back. (2/23/2016 3:50:11 AM)

quick MWiF question - is loaning to Free France working yet?

quick Oil Be Back question - is Vichy still neutral?

Mayhemizer_slith -> RE: AllenK vs Mayhemizer III: Oil be back. (2/23/2016 4:37:34 AM)

Vichy is neutral and I think loaning to free france is working as US gave one oil to free france in our game.
