KWG -> RE: Air Campaign (1/15/2016 3:49:36 PM)

Allied planes focus on the center of the German defenses.

KWG -> HELL'S HEX (1/15/2016 4:18:36 PM)

HELL'S HEX

Nonstop fighting in the hedgerows. You cant always just hit the weak points, sometimes you have to take out the strongest to turn the tide.

For the 2nd week the 2SS and 12SS are the targets of Allied air and ground assaults. RAF Bomber Command and 2nd RAF TAC fly missions behind the front as 9th USAAF provides ground support. Repeated Allied ground attacks are blunted by the arrival of Germans reserves that pay a heavy price themsleves for running the Allied gaunlet.

A British ammo lorry is hit by German mortar fire.

A Churchill tank is resupplied.

In other fighting, behind the Allied front:
Allied soldiers make a sign that tells the Germans they are surrounded, as 3 German divisions are taken into captivity.

Can anybody give me an informal explanation of how ground combat works? Does the game basically simulate to masses of men charging eachother with the longer ranged weapons firing as soon as the enemy is within range and the faster units closing with the enemy first and therefore firing more? I just find it odd that the motorcycle units cause the same number of hits as the much more numerous motorised infantry in the first battle. Or that the 100 or so Shermans in the second battle never really managed to hit much.

That will take a better explanation than mine. but from what I notice:

The motorcycle units would be out front, without bikes in defense maybe as recon.

Elements fire and move, sometimes even the long-range will fire pointblank.

Ive noticed for, both sides, the amount of fire for the attacker is WAY LOWER than what the defender is putting out. This seems to be the case in almost every battle.
Maybe its due to attacking units moving too much, instead of some elements stopping and putting out a good amout of fire as other units move. Bound and Overwatch.

loki100 -> RE: France (1/15/2016 6:44:25 PM)

I remember when the game first came out that Stuart Tanks (as opposed to Kings) were real killers compared to other allied weapon systems ... can't now remember where that discussion got to but I think something was over-counting their effectiveness?

KWG -> Week 61 (1/16/2016 4:07:47 PM)

Air Forces' missions for week 61.

Operation Zeus continues and refinements are made to better aid our ground forces.

Bombing Germany; as we hit the Ruhr, and fuel/oil in Austria. New mission parameters seem to be doing well.

V-launch sites get a visit by RAF Bomber Command.

KWG -> RE: Week 61 (1/16/2016 4:30:36 PM)

15 more battles notched on the gunstock.

The Allies have broken through the German line in several places.

2 weeks of battles in Hell's Hex caused the Germans to send more forces to that area, as we hoped so we switched focus and hit the German front further south.

Word comes down from SHAEF to press the enemy, as any concentration of German units into one "counterattack" area could leave them vulnerable in key locations.
Allies take a chance and advance at all opportunities.

Reserves at the ready as supplies go to where they are needed most.

KWG -> RE: Week 61 (1/17/2016 12:15:25 AM)

Luftwaffe took high losses from combat this week. In some battles the entire patrol ended up as gun camera footage.

We took heavy transport losses due to staff error.

Other changes in Allied Air Tactics seem to have reduced losses.

KWG -> Week 62 (1/17/2016 6:27:24 PM)

Germans retreating across France.

Liberation of Europe rolls on.

Churchill is informed in the middle of the night.

Allied Command has stated that Operation Godwinson -Normandy Invasion- has been a success. The Allied Army is in Europe to stay.

Some call for a direct drive on Paris, others for the destruction of German forces as the main focus.

Bradley, Patton and Montgomery discuss the next phase of Allied Operations.

After liberating Rome, Montgomery was quietly transferred to Normandy and put in charge of the British 2nd Army.

Patton has turn down repeated promotions in order to command at the corps level. He has been leading US VII Corps since the begining of the Normandy Invasion.

Bradley commented "Patton drives 1st Army, I just do the paperwork." [;)] Game - a tactical strategy we do.

Things I need to be more aware of and do more. Nothing too camouflaged.

1- Flight path and flak guns!!!
Something that often goes overlooked. One hex can make a difference in losses. Stay away from them as much as possible.
Transport missions can be so disastrous due to the flight plan that is flown is unadjustable.

2- Lesser planes - better results.
Sometimes less planes bombing will cause more damage. Strategically and tactically.

Although there are times when you want/need everyone to fly it does not always produce the best results.

When everyone is well rested and has high morale its great to have all aircraft flying as much as possible. Once fatigue and especially moral goes bad it starts to have diminishing returns that can snowball the numbers of less damaged produced and more damage taken.

Except for the rare case where it's absolutely necessary, it's best to not fly with low moral or high fatigue pilots as it causes your aircraft to take more damage thus lowering morale even more.

This leads to : Mission intensity, mission percent and number of days to fly.

Missions for the Week - Let a squadron Fly and Not Fly.
By adjusting mission intensity, mission percent and number of days to fly you can keep your pilots from high fatigue/low morale WHILE still flying them.
Less need to put the majority of squadrons on rest during good weather weeks.

KWG -> Week 62 (1/18/2016 4:49:02 PM)

Week 62

Allies catch up to the Germans and engage the defensive line.

[image]local://upfiles/43155/4B30D10A2DF54077BEA0D1C3A4F75CC4.jpg[/image]

KWG -> week 63 (1/20/2016 3:46:55 PM)

Here is how it looks after my first round of battles this turn. Week 63

Lots of smaller/weaker German units were left in front of the main German defensive line. You have to be careful when attacking this units due to possible German reserve activation.
If you try to use only just enough strength to defeat the attacked unit you risk being defeated by the reserve units. I counter this by using my own selective reserve activation.

My main effort is to get through the weaker units in order to get adjacent to the stronger German units to prevent them from activating as reserve when I attack the stronger parts of the line, later this turn.

KWG -> Week 63 (1/21/2016 3:34:53 PM)

Back to week 62.

A look at the 2 German attacks from the previous turn gives me a insight to the German units and their strenghts.

11th Panzer Division
116th Panzer Division
10th SS Panzer Division
26th Panzer Division
15th Panzergrenader
17th SS Panzergrenader

attacked

5th US Armored Division
1st BR Armored Division
33rd BR Tank Brigade

No reserves or air support were called in.

KWG -> Week 63 (1/21/2016 3:44:09 PM)

Week 63

2nd round of battles.

I hit the main German defenses. I realize that the German armor is concentrated in the center and south of the line.
We breakthrough in the north. I could have pressed the entire line this turn, however there is no need to push everyone to exhaustion.
The Allies in France conserve their strength and prepare for the next assault.

Peltonx -> RE: Grinding (1/22/2016 8:37:38 PM)

Turn 59
WA Loses: 350,000
GHC Loses: 585,000

Turn 60 VP’s this turn: -5 Total: -101 DRAW
WA Loses: 361,000 Loses this turn: 11,000
GHC Loses: 630,000 Loses this turn: 45,000
Ratio this turn: 4.1 to 1
GHC starts setting up 2nd and 3rd lines of defense. GHC also disbands 20 depots and opens up 20 more, supplies will not be an issue at the next 2 stop lines. The work around has started
to work as loses from bombing were less then 35% of loses this turn. The pocketed germans do their job by greatly reducing supplies south
of the pocket forcing WA to beat their heads against hexes withen 50 miles of the coasts. This will buy time to build the next line of
defense.

Logistics chain now start coming into play and so does tricks learnt from the Eastern Front. Defend north to south along the coast.

Peltonx -> RE: Grinding (1/23/2016 12:06:02 AM)

Turn 60
WA Loses: 378,000
GHC Loses: 668,000
Turn 61 VP’s this turn: -12 Total: -113 DRAW
WA Loses: 378,000 Loses this turn: 17,000
GHC Loses: 668,000 Loses this turn: 38,000
Ratio this turn: 2.2 to 1
2SS and 12SS cause over 18,000 in loses over the last 2 weeks and force Patton to try to break through more to the south as supplies become an issue for WA’s. The line holds again as WA forces inland have low CV/MP’s. More troops are moved into the 2nd line and the depots fill full of supplies. The loss ratio is now more in line with historical as 27,000 of the losses were from a surrender so more in line with 1 to 1.5 historical lose ratio, the work around made a huge difference.

looking at the map, I'd be very worried that kwg has a third invasion set up. Depends on if he left his TFs in Brittany for supply or has any left in the Med but even a two hex landing around Calais could be pretty deadly now?

KWG -> RE: Grinding (1/23/2016 4:09:08 PM)

week 64

We fight through the rear guard regiments and close with the main German defensive line.

We liberate the ports of Lorient and St Nazaire.

It is made public news that the French ports of Cherbourg and Brest have been fully operational for some time, thanks to the efforts of American engineers.

Monty informs Ike and Brad.. "I have this crazy idea."

KWG -> RE: Grinding (1/23/2016 4:32:21 PM)

Week 65

France A GO-GO

Time for the Allies to explore France.

Give the Germans a chance to use some petrol. Get out of the foxholes and see the countryside.

No more pounding for one acre, as we are now strong enough to shift the offensive focus and still be offensive in other places and we think the Germans can only strongly defend confined areas.

Do the Germans still have IT in mobile warfare.

#1 rule defend north to south same as WitE

SS was before my moves.

Peltonx -> RE: making the water flow south. (1/23/2016 8:40:20 PM)

Turn 61
WA Loses: 378,000
GHC Loses: 668,000
Turn 62 VP’s this turn: -8 Total: -132 Draw
WA Loses: 391,000 Loses this turn: 13,000
GHC Loses: 694,000 Loses this turn: 26,000
Ratio this turn: 2.0 to 1
7th and 14th Army’s start withdrawing east putting regiments in the front line and divisions in the 2nd in reserve mode. Same basic strategy as WitE – defend north to south and force enemy to take the LONG road to Berlin. Weather will become key soon as mud = truck loses and MP/CV loses same as WitE.

[image]local://upfiles/20387/D46C191A2C2244AB875E18920FBF0BB4.jpg[/image]

Peltonx -> RE: making the water flow south. (1/26/2016 6:31:20 PM)

Turn 62
WA Loses: 391,000
GHC Loses: 694,000
Turn 63 VP’s this turn: -8 Total: -132 Draw
WA Loses: 406,000 Loses this turn: 15,000
GHC Loses: 728,000 Loses this turn: 34,000
Ratio this turn: 2.2 to 1
The picket line works perfectly getting 4 hold results causing and extra 2000 loses and forcing WA to use DA’s instead of hasty
eating up MP’s.
The 7th and 14th Armies will keep withdrawing east this turn using the same picket line set-up.
Basicly same set-up as WitE while doing turns to Berlin strategy.

Peltonx -> Battle for Paris. (1/27/2016 8:42:13 PM)

Turn 63
WA Loses: 406,000
GHC Loses: 728,000
Turn 64 VP’s this turn: -13 Total: -145 Draw Turns Left: 47 Hexes to Berlin: 69
WA Loses: 433,000 Loses this turn: 27,000
GHC Loses: 763,000 Loses this turn: 35,000
Ratio this turn: 1.5 to 1
6000 from bombing, 7000 from St Milo garrison surrender and 22,000 from normal ground combat. So the ground combat ratio is falling into the historical combat ratio’s 1:1 once I countered with a work around on my end. Over the last 5 turns the WA’s have been forced to grind forward 70 mile’s towards Paris taking larger and larger loses per turn as German forces become stronger and stronger. GHC still has allot of reorganizing to really help increase loses from reserve mode reactions. The effects of this defensive strategy can clearly be seen as WA’s are forced to use allot more CV per attack even vs 1 CV front line units, which causes extra MP’s to enter the hex, more MP’s to do the attacks and in turn causes WA’s to use up allot of supplies to grind out each hex causing supply issue = lower MP and CV the following turn.

[image]local://upfiles/20387/3AB6B39597EF407D935B4EAF27881DF0.jpg[/image]

Peltonx -> RE: Battle for Paris. (1/28/2016 5:32:03 PM)

Turn 64
WA Loses: 433,000
GHC Loses: 763,000
Turn 65 VP’s this turn: -24 Total: -169 Draw Turns Left: 46 Hexes to Berlin: 67
WA Loses: 451,000 Loses this turn: 18,000
GHC Loses: 806,000 Loses this turn: 39,000
Ratio this turn: 2.1 to 1 7,000 from 2 garrison surrenders, 9,000 from bombing and 23,000 from ground combat.
KWG is getting lucky with clear weather as forecast have been for rain last 3 turns and its been clear every turn, same for next turn heavy rain.
WA’s are at the first stop line, see if I can hold it for a single turn.

[image]local://upfiles/20387/701826EB6E644BE4B05CC4C44168B7EC.jpg[/image]

Peltonx -> RE: Battle for Paris. (1/29/2016 4:29:37 PM)

Turn 65
WA Loses: 451,000
GHC Loses: 806,000
Turn 66 VP’s this turn: -13 Total: -182 Draw
WA Loses: 463,000 Loses this turn: 12,000
GHC Loses: 831,000 Loses this turn: 25,000
Ratio this turn: 2.1 to 1
So GHC stops WA’s cold 170 miles from the coast to flow south. Same strategy as WitE defend north to south. As can be seen rain has started so parts of the map turn to mud. Again same strategy as WitE truck destruction. As WA’s flow south it requires more and more trucks as they are far from ports or RH’s.

French civilians join the cause.

Open ....PAVED roads

Rain, sleet or snow..... and that is just the American postal service...

The American Army is a bad weather army..... not a army of "summer soldiers and sunshine patriots".

As the Hessian soldiers found out at the Battle of Trenton January 2, 1777, so shall these Hessians.
