Ah, the good old days of clear weather. How I miss them now...

Ya I like my sappers and extra artillery regiments in all army HQs. A couple SUs being sent to support a battle can be the difference between a win or a loss. Esp when stationary HQs with decent commanders often send 4 or SUs to support a defense/attack.

Plus to me the earlier you build all these units the quicker they rack up exp/morale and allow for better units to assist in the first winter. Also SUs dont get destroyed in encirclements if they are in Army HQs just take some losses.

That's all very true, but if they get pocketed its a major blow- that can not be recovered from.

Its balancing act most players don't take the chance of doing, they generally play it
safe so they can take more loses and still recover.

That big pocket can be recovered from as its mostly junk and cost no AP other then a few units.

As long as Russia holds Moscow all is good for 41. He is not in great shape but its not a disaster yet, your loses in our game were not much smaller then that pocket and you were fine.

morvael -> RE: Rodina Struggle (Morvael vs Cpt Flam) (1/2/2016 7:03:55 PM)

My panzers reached Borodino quite close to the anniversary of the 1812 battle. As can be seen speed of advance across Russia was similar to the one from 129 years earlier, despite thousands of trucks, APCs and AFVs.

The Kharkov strike was a failure. Only a weak motorized division reached the city with full (or most of) ARM factory. But it didn't held against Soviet counterattack and when I locked the city properly on next turn there was just 4 or 5 ARM remaining.

Peltonx -> RE: Rodina Struggle (Morvael vs Cpt Flam) (1/2/2016 7:14:26 PM)

Moscow looks safe as long as you hold the flanks.

Hows your OOB look cpt flame?

My past jabs/spear thrusts end in broken spears.

Good luck

morvael -> RE: Rodina Struggle (Morvael vs Cpt Flam) (1/2/2016 8:52:09 PM)

As you can see from the map the only real fort line was between Rzhev and Vyazma, and it is already broken. Beyond are just level 1 forts with large gaps between them. Screenshots from turn before show that Moscow defensive lines were not in place as of week ago.

morvael -> RE: Rodina Struggle (Morvael vs Cpt Flam) (1/5/2016 8:36:09 AM)

Manstein's speartip Motorized Division managed to destroy Li-2 factory in Khimki. This will hurt the Soviets in later phases of the war, they will have to wait until C-47 arrive from lend-lease in 1943 to have some long range transports. And their overall transport capacity will be low, so no good air resupply for tank corps in 1944-45 (which in our previous PBEM helped me a lot to get into Berlin before end of March).

morvael -> RE: Rodina Struggle (Morvael vs Cpt Flam) (1/6/2016 1:46:12 PM)

Encircled in Moscow were: 4x HI, 20x ARM, 13x VEH and some 300k fuel.

Easternmost hex where I attacked is an important Soviet rail line, without it they have to travel some 400 miles east (and then back west) instead directly along the front.

The Moscow bulge is causing problems for me, hard to cover every hex, not enough infantry divisions...

chaos45 -> RE: Rodina Struggle (Morvael vs Cpt Flam) (1/6/2016 3:00:23 PM)

As long as you dont suffer a major reversal of some sort come winter- probably game. As you got leningrad and moscow and will still get some ground in the south and center yet before winter.

Even with mud coming---u get a chance to dig in and do mop up/line adjustment actions in November....and in all honesty his industry and manpower losses from those major cities will be a big impact on Soviet Recovery.

Shoot for 1942 German win----will be a hard road for the Soviets to stop it in their current state....as Moscow also gives a massive defensive hub for the German center over the winter.

M60A3TTS -> RE: Rodina Struggle (Morvael vs Cpt Flam) (1/6/2016 3:15:05 PM)

The mild winter option makes this even more of a challenge. Under normal conditions, retaking Moscow is a real possibility. Mild winter not so much.

loki100 -> RE: Rodina Struggle (Morvael vs Cpt Flam) (1/6/2016 4:10:44 PM)

well done morvael, very impressive force concentration by the look of it

morvael -> RE: Rodina Struggle (Morvael vs Cpt Flam) (1/6/2016 4:56:29 PM)

M60A3TTS, I don't know. I sort of ran out of steam later, trying to recover supply in the center, cover holes in the front, rest tired troops, prepare for winter. If there would be unending clear weather things would look brighter. I hate mud, snow and blizzard [:)]

loki100, Guderian managed to join the fray, it took him some time to return from the south. So it's three Panzer Groups together now.

chaos45 -> RE: Rodina Struggle (Morvael vs Cpt Flam) (1/6/2016 6:15:48 PM)

Even if he pushes the lines back to Moscow it will be impossible for the Soviets to take- fortified with the city bonus German troops wont wear down in the city and the terrain is good. Should easily be able to stand there all winter.

Plus u secured leningrad super early so those lines will be heavily entrenched and well rested by winter. Thats one thing many Soviet players I dont think are realizing about leningrad is yes you may lose it but the longer it takes the Germans the better---as its less time to prepare for winter and less time/troops shifted to moscow sector early.

Also dont underestimate the double whammy of manpower losses of both moscow and leningrad. If you can keep up the losses on the Soviets it should degrade his ability to man formations even if he has armaments. Esp taking them both in 1941 when the manpower multiplier is at its highest.

morvael -> RE: Rodina Struggle (Morvael vs Cpt Flam) (1/8/2016 8:25:19 AM)

I'm not good at constructing defensive lines. They are too shallow and in some places (I blame length of the front line) I even have 0 level forts (I blame mud, snow, and blizzard; also sending most construction units to OKH and AGs to repair rail). Most is in level 2 of course, but no doubt he will concentrate on the weakest spots.

edit: but I digress, AAR is not yet at that point

sillyflower -> RE: Rodina Struggle (Morvael vs Cpt Flam) (1/9/2016 8:27:06 AM)

Nothing to stop you assigning some construction units to forts or back to corps HQs, especially as it is free. Now is the time to learn how to create defences!

'Audace, toujours l'audace' is a great slogan but a rubbish mission statement
