Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Japan. Ground Strike. Sian, China.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Japan. Northern, China.

Japan only maneuvers in the North. They make no attack.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Japan. Land Combat. Southern, China.

In the south Japan does attack but rolls miserably. Ouch ... the dreaded 14 (modified) on the assault table.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Allied #2. RN. East Med.

The CW takes a naval and moves strong forces into the East Med with the objective of finding and either sinking or running off the Italian RM, which would put the large Italian army in the Middle East out of supply.

Unfortunately for the RN their search fails, but the Italian's search doesn't. The Italians use their surprise points to avoid combat. The risk to the Italian supply lines in the Middle East was just too great to gamble given the small naval force that the axis have in the East Med.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (3/13/2016 5:13:17 AM)

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Allied #2. RN. North Atlantic.

The CW also uses the naval to increase convoy escorts in the North Atlantic. The CW chooses not to initiate combat.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Allied #2. German U-boats. North Atlantic. Round 1, search.

The German player does choose to initiate combat as the non-phasing player. Things look well for the Germans after a search roll of 2 (modified to a 1), that is until the CW player rolls a 1.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Allied #2. German U-boats. North Atlantic. Round 2, Search.

Both sides stay and the German u-boats manage to find and surprise the RN. However, since the RN has a carrier in sea box 0, the Germans have to use 4 or their 5 surprise points to force a sub combat.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Allied #2. German U-boats. North Atlantic. Round 2, Combat.

Combat ends by default. Germany has no more u-boats left in the sea area.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Allied #2. North Atlantic.

Though the CW had 2 CPs sunk and 4 aborted I guess you'd have to call this battle between the RN and German u-boats a minor victory for the RN. Or maybe a tie? I guess it doesn't really matter what you call it. The CW needs to replace 5 CPs in the North Atlantic before the end of the turn.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Allied #2. CW. RAF Strategic Bombing, Paris.

RAF strategic bombers hit Paris to no effect. No matter, the French people must really love the British now with them bombing Paris and all.

On the defense of artillery units: here is RAW:

A towed or motorised artillery unit has a combat factor (before
modification) of ‘1’ unless it is stacked with a land unit other than
an artillery or notional unit (exceptions: anti-aircraft fire by AA
units and bombardment by field artillery).

Just as much as they always have. [:)]

Courtenay -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (3/13/2016 5:18:08 PM)

Out of curiosity, why didn't the Japanese destroy the Tokyo MIL instead of either the 6-3 INF or the AT gun, both of which will cost more and take longer to replace?

Who owns Taiyuan? If the Japanese still control it, why didn't the Communist CAV XX capture Taiyuan? This would have cut of one resource from the Japanese, might have given a US entry chit when the Japanese recaptured it, and the CAV would have threatened to charge into Hebei, forcing the Japanese to come up with at least one unit to block it. (If the Chinese have already captured it, then ignore this comment.)

Thanks. I was skimming through the "Rules and Coded" and the two volumes of the player's manual but couldn't find it. It's probably obvious and I'm just overlooking it. Never owning or playing the cardboard and paper version and having to "manually" apply the rules myself, I imagine there are several rules like this of which I'm just not aware.

Look wise I valued a 6-2 white print MIL more that a 6-3 regular infantry corps. I guess I was lured by 6 combat value and the white print. It probably was the wrong decision on my part, but my thinking was that I needed the combat value in the near term.

Japan does. I missed that one didn't I. I was focused on Mao and what was happening to the south and not to the north. [:(]

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Axis #3. Weather.

[image]local://upfiles/31901/F13CA7C4952A43AD9F5572B665610C2C.jpg[/image]

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (3/13/2016 10:48:40 PM)

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Axis #3. Italian RM. East Med.

The Italians take a much needed naval and move sea and land reinforcements into the East Med. Their one damaged transport was repaired and is loaded with a 5-4 mountain corps headed for the Middle East. Also, an Italian RM CA is loaded with a 1-3 division from Cyprus and is in transient (also) to the Middle East.

The Italians elect NOT to initiate combat as they're don't want to risk attacks against their just returned transport or, worse case, risk losing control of the sea area and supply to their troops in the Middle East.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Axis #3. British RN. East Med. Round 1. Search and Air to Air.

However, the CW does wish combat and chooses, as the non-phasing player, to initiate combat. Both sides roll low for the search rolls and thus both sides find the other.

In the air to air combat the axis fighter cover is stripped with the German fighter unit shot down and the Italian fighter unit forced to abort. Both sides get get bombers through to attack the other sides naval units. Of most concern of the Italians is their newly repaired transport.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Axis #3. British RN. East Med. Round 1. Naval Combat.

Italian AA fire is in intense and results in the downing of 1 of the 3 RN CVP units. A second has its bombs reduced by 3, which leaves 0. Only one of the three air units actually get through to attack the Italian fleet. Two damages was the expected result. Fortunately for the Italians, the CW player rolled high and both damage results turned into aborts.

The Italian NAV had an expected result of damage and abort. Both results turned into two aborts.

Both sides stay and search is rolled for a possible second round.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Axis #3. British RN. East Med. Round 2.

Round 2 has the RN surprising the Italian RM (i.e., the CW search rolled succeed and the Italian's didn't) and isolating sea box 0. The RN sinks an Italian convoy, damages an RM heavy cruiser and forces a second heavy cruiser to abort. A clear victory from the British RN.

Both sides, again decided to stay.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Axis #3. British RN. East Med. Round 3.

It's the Italian RM turn to surprise the British RN. Wanting the battle to end, the Italians use 4 of their surprise points to avoid, and thus end, this naval combat.

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Axis #3. Japan. Northern China.

The Japanese take a combine and use their one rail move to address Vice Admiral Courtenay's issue with the defense of Taiyuan. The use the combine to put three ground units into the China Sea headed from Northern China.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (3/13/2016 11:09:02 PM)

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Axis #3. Japan. Southern China.

Japan also uses their combine to move three more units into the South China Sea and deploy two 5-4 units to Canton and a 2-4 Marine division to help defend the cross to Hainan.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (3/14/2016 12:03:06 AM)

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Allied #5. CW. Port Attack, Brest.

The CW takes a combine. They use two of their air missions for a port attack. The first port attack is against Brest and manages to damage the German Heavy Cruiser Grap Spee and disorganize the Battleship Bismarck.

Note (Bottom Cap): The "Allied player" actually choose the target for choices 1 and 2. Choice 2, should have been the axis choice. The "Axis player" choose the target for choice 3 to make up for this. Confusing, I know, but the allied player got to choose 2 of the 3 targets and the axis player 1 as it should have been. Only the order was messed up.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (3/14/2016 12:07:22 AM)

Turn 8. Nov/Dec 1940. Allied #5. CW. Port Attack, Jaffa, Palestine.

The second port attack is an overwhelming success for the RN. The RN manages to bottom the newly repaired, and only available, Italian transport. Also, an Italian heavy cruiser was damaged.

After 2-years of playing MWiF, it's just lately that I'm really beginning to appreciate how important port attacks are.
