i was going to comment that the phasing Naval player was struggling to find his oppo. but the non-phasing player was far more successful, seems to have changed or is the USN having a good run of the dice??

For the most part it's been the CW and now the USN that have pushed naval combat. The search rolls have ebbed and flowed over the last few turns. But in general, what I'm seeing is that if the allies stay at it they continue to manage to shrink the axis navies. Though, at a cost. However, I believe if the RN and USN keep at it that eventually the Italians and Japanese will run out of ships and NAV units.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (4/21/2016 12:44:20 AM)

Turn 16. Axis #10. Italy. Naval. Italian Coast.

The Italians take a naval and move a replacement CP out into the 0-box off the Italian Cast. Of course, the Italians choose not to initiate combat. However, the RN does and successfully forces a naval combat.

The RN manage to surprise the Italians and choose to isolate box 0, where the Italian CP is.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (4/21/2016 12:46:02 AM)

Turn 16. Axis #10. Italy. Naval. Italian Coast. Naval Combat. Round 1.

The Italians lose their CP. Combat ends after one round when neither side is able to find the other.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (4/21/2016 12:49:02 AM)

Turn 16. Axis #10. Germany. The Eastern Front, South.

Germany takes a land and hopes to get sufficient odds to assault Odessa. However, even with von Bock adding support, the Wehrmacht could only muster +6 attack on the assault table. With two Soviet units defending Odessa, those odds aren't nearly good enough for a try. So no attack.

Turn 16. Axis #10. Germany. The Eastern Front, North.

Not much except that the out of supply Finnish corps moves back into supply. Of course, this move disorganized him.

The attack in China again shows that one unit in a hex is a poor defense...

Yes. I keep teaching myself this lesson over and over. I'm slowly learning and applying (e.g., Eastern Front), but need to apply it globally!

The Japanese currently have a single line of troops in the North facing the communist Chinese. I need to correct that too.

I don't know whey this lesson is so difficult for me to apply. But I will one day see the two, or three, stack high defense with gaps as much superior that a continuous 1 high stack defense line.

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Victory Totals. Captured Facilities.

From last turn, Japan increased her victory totals by 1 and the USA saw a reduction of 2 (1 to Japan and 1 lost because both Brazil and Mexico are aligned).

WiF has a lot of rules I don't like, but it is my opinion that this particular rule (the US loses an objective for aligning both Mexico and Brazil) is the most ridiculous.

Courtenay -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (4/22/2016 2:25:54 AM)

Two comments on minor tactical details:

In the Hawaiian Islands the US had a choice of an air or a surface action. With an air action, the US was ensured of no loss, while inflicting an A. With a surface action, the US would inflict a D on Mogami at the cost of 2As.

(As near as I can tell, neither side had any surprise points in this battle.)

I would have picked the surface action. Even trades of damage favor the Americans. Here, they have a chance to inflict damage to the Japanese while suffering no loss themselves. The aborts are inconsequential. The US should grab all such opportunities that they can.

Another point is that the composition of the US task force is not optimal. It seems to be designed to fight air (or sub) battles, as it has a lot of AA strength. The third cruiser, however, adds nothing to the US surface combat ability (10 points and 13 points are the same column), while making the US more vulnerable to Japanese fire.

Three ships are usually the wrong number to have in a sea box. MWiF rewards having two, four, or seven ships in a naval battle.

Thanks! I've got to remember 2, 4, 7 ...

Also, to pick surface instead of always, or mostly, picking air. I just love carrier air battles in the Pacific ...
