Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Axis #9. Weather.

The weather in the Med that the allies having been waiting for for two turns. The issue is that the turn my end after this axis impulse. The axis certainly won't mind. Only the Japanese have things they need to do, so Germany and Italy may take a pass to increase the chance that the turn will end to 40%, versus 30%, if one or both did something along with Japan.

I think I spotted a bug, seeing how you are dealing with Vichy France. Here is RAW:

17.5 Combat with Vichy
If Vichy French land units are involved in a land combat, or are
overrun, solely by units controlled by an Allied major power they are
not hostile to, they may defect before combat.
Roll a die immediately before land combat or the overrun for each
Vichy unit (including notional units) involved. On a 4 or less, the
Vichy unit is destroyed prior to combat resolution. If no Axis land
units remain, an (attacking) Allied major power can advance after
combat as if it were a ‘B’ result. Allied land units stay face-up. Shore
bombarding ships and ground supporting bombers still turn facedown.
If it’s an overrun, you just pay the normal terrain cost, not
double.
Subtract 1 from the roll for each Free French or US land unit involved
in the combat.
If any unit stays loyal, the combat proceeds against those that remain.

I wonder: did you see those die rolls when attacking Vichy units? I've not seen it mentioned in the AAR...

And something else: Stalin: speaking to the Commissar in charge of airplanes production: "We've got pilots flying bi-planes! Haven't you got something better for them to fly"?

I have one attack left, which is on Algiers. I'll let you know if the proper rolls take place or not.

With respect to Soviet airplanes, I see about replacing those bi-planes as the situation permits.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Axis #9. Actions.

The axis, especially, the Germans and Italians want this turn to end so they pass. However, the Japanese have attacks they want to make in Southern China and Malaya so they take a land.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/9/2016 11:25:55 PM)

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Axis #9. Japan. Ground Support. Malaya.

Japanese ground support from their aircraft carriers in the South China Sea are intercepted by an RAF fighter unit. Also, the RAF adds ground support of their own. The end result is that both sides add 2 factors, which shifts the attack in the favor of the defender.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Axis #9. Japan. Land Combat 1 of 4. Malaya.

The first of four Japanese land combats is in Malaya. The CW, in order to try to preserve the few land units they have there, select the Blitz table. The attack results in no losses on either side but disorganizes the Japanese.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Axis #9. Japan. Land Combat 2 and 3. Southern China.

The next two attacks are daring attacks, which if both successful, could likely result in the encirclement of the majority of the Nationalist Chinese armies.

The Japanese get the dreaded modified roll of 14 on the first attack which wipes out both all the attackers and defenders. Well, there was only one defending unit.

The second attack is a victory for the Japanese.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Axis #9. End of Turn.

I wanted to keep myself in suspense and didn't make this roll until after posting the caps for this (axis #9) impulse. But, the turn continues and the allies, especially the Western Allies in North Africa and the Med are happy. Stay tuned for how things break ....

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/10/2016 1:23:30 AM)

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #11. Actions.

All five allies take a land except for the Soviets who take a naval. I can't ever remember taking a naval with the Soviets so I think this is a first for me. With storms in the Arctic, rain in the North Temperate and the communist Chinese front stabilized as best as possible given Mao's gargantuan foul up I was thinking of passing with the Soviets when it occurred to me that instead the Soviets could take a naval.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/10/2016 1:34:06 AM)

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #11. USSR. Ground Strike.

The Soviets start their naval off with a low chance ground strike against the two HQ axis stack in Southern Russia. The strike is effective. Kesselring is disorganized.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/10/2016 1:36:44 AM)

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #11. USSR. Baltic Fleet.

The Soviet Baltic fleet leaves port for the first time this war and manages to find the axis fleet. The Finns fly in a fighter to the zero box in hopes of forcing a naval "air" battle. The Soviets isolate the 0-box and have enough surprise points to force a surface naval battle.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #11. USSR. Baltic Fleet. Round 1.

The Soviets manage to sink a Finnish Battleship and force 3 German CPs to abort. The cost is only that two Soviets battleships were forced to abort in return.

Both sides stay but naval combat ends.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #11. USSR. Black Sea Fleet.

The Soviet Black Sea fleets also sails for the first time this war. And like the cousins in the Baltic, the Black Sea fleet manage to find the axis.

Turning to the Pacific, the USN attempts to ground strike the Japanese stack on Truk. The strike fails. No units are disorganized.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #11. CW. Malaya. Siam. Dutch East Indies.

What reversal in Malaya/Siam! All due to a trap that I set as the CW player for the Japanese player that I wasn't even aware that I was setting (as the CW player) or walking into (as the Japanese player). I have to admit that to both set a trap and walk into the trap without actually knowing you're walking into a trap is quite a feat to pull off in solitary play. But I did!

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/10/2016 2:07:59 AM)

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #11. CW. Malaya/Siam. Land Combat. "The Trap."

So here was the trap. The CW had Alexander, 6-3 marine and 6-5 mot on transport in the Bay of Bengal. Alexander was able to disembark into the hex directly west of the Imp. Guard Marines and artillery division because that hex was still CW controlled, even through it was unoccupied. This cut supply to the two Japanese units with were also disorganized. Thus, their defense factors were cut from 10 to 4. Then the 6-5 MOT was able to disembark into the hex with Alexander and the 6-3 marine into the hex with Mountbatten. With HQ support from Mountbatten, the CW was able to get +17.5. The Japanese choose the Blitz table in hopes of saving one or both of these valuable units. That was in vain as the CW rolled well high enough to produce a modified 23, destroying both units.

What is more impressive? The fact that I set such a wonderful trap? Of the fact that I set it and walked into it without being aware that I set it? [:D]

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #11. CW. Ground Strike. Algiers, Algeria.

The CW attempts a low chance ground strike that misses against the Vichy stack in Algiers.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #11. Western Allies. Land Combat. Algiers, Algeria.

No matter, the Western Allies easily take Algiers in a land combat.

Note, that a proper roll was made to determine whether or not Vichy units would defect. I assume this "rule" doesn't apply to Territorials, as no roll was made? Is that correct?

However, the bug I reported in http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4069972 (posts 2, 17 18), specifically the one related to the inability of Vichy to rebase overrun naval units is still there. The bug is that when an overrun unit needs to rebase no form with the unit shows up and the end of phase button is grayed out. The only workaround I've found is to set die rolls and make a roll in which the Vichy naval unit is destroyed.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/10/2016 2:34:42 AM)

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #11. CW. Land Combat. Amphibious Invasion. Syracuse, Italy.

An the trifecta in land combat for the Western Allies this impulse.

While this landing was almost a sure thing it wasn't completely. A roll of 2 (1%) would have resulted in the destruction of all three invading units. Not as bad, but still bad, rolls of 3, 4 and 7 (11% chance total) would have resulted in the loss of two of the three invading units. At +12A, the CW rolled the minimum they could and still achieve the landing without loss and / or disorganization. They rolled a 11 which modified to a 23.

With the successful combats in Malaya/Siam, Vichy North Africa and Sicily, Churchill is ecstatic. His speech to Parliament included the two lines, "This is not the end or even the beginning of the end. But it is the end of the beginning."
