Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Axis #5. Germany U-boats. Italian Subs. Cape St. Vincent. Sub Battle, Round 1.

The German u-boats and Italian subs manage to sink 3 CW CPs and force another 2 to abort. However, the Germans lose their u-boat unit and the Italians have one of theirs damaged and forced to abort. This leaves two Italian sub units, with one of the two organized.

Both sides decide to stay but the Italians choose not to commit their subs, thus ending the battle. Again, the Italians want to use their remaining organized sub unit to impede, really disrupt, allied naval movement through Cape St. Vincent.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Axis #5. RN. Arabian Sea.

Because of the movement of a Vichy CP to the 0-box in the Arabian Sea, the RN is given the option to try to initiate a combat or not. The RN chooses not to.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Axis #5. Japan. Ground Strike. China.

Now turning to Asia and China, Japan uses 1 of their 2 air missions of a land for a ground strike against Stilwell and his stack. The strike is ineffective.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Axis #5. Japan. Land Combat 1, 2 & 3. China.

Japan aggressively continues their war against China. The most aggressive attack so far to date was the 2nd land combat (middle screen cap), which if successful could put the Nationalist Chinese in the south on the run and out of the hair of the Japanese. The Chinese choose the Blitz table which ensures the survival of Stiwell, unless the Japanese get the fractional odds (37.5% chance) and roll a 20 (1% chance), which is a cumulative chance of < 0.4%. The attack for the Japanese went about as well as they could hope for. This was one aggressive attack by the Japanese but that's their tendency and so it was played that way.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #7. USSR. Ground Strike 1 of 2.

The USSR doesn't do anything inside the Soviet Union except for two ground strikes, both of which fail. However, a Luftwaffe fighter unit is downed. So that's something after all.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #7. RN. Bay of Bengal.

Though this theater is of lesser priority (for now) to the Western Allies, the RN moves in significant reinforces into the Bay of Bengal for Malaya and the Dutch East Indies.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #7. RN. USN. Bismarck Sea.

In the Bismarck Sea the RN "helps" the USN to successfully initiate a naval combat against the IJN. This naval battle is definitely not a one-side affair.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #7. RN. USN. Bismarck Sea. Round 1.

The USN misses a golden opportunity to damage the Kaga!

Both sides see one of the main fleet carriers forced to abort. Even with the damage IJN heavy cruiser this first round is a tie.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/9/2016 12:53:34 AM)

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #7. RN. USN. Bismarck Sea. Round 2.

The second round sees the IJN finding and surprising the USN. The intention of the Japanese naval commander was to isolated the USN carriers and inflict damage on them. Instead, in his excitement, the Japanese naval commander included the other two sea boxes that contained USA and CW land based aircraft thus significant shifting the balance of the battle. I'd say this mistake is akin to deciding to arm the planes with torpedoes, switching to bombs and then switching back and getting caught with your flight decks full of planes when the enemy attacks.

The USN, without any damage to their own, did manage to damage an IJN carrier and a second heavy cruiser.

Both sides stay but are unable to find the other, thus ending this battle.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #7. RN. North Atlantic. Cape St. Vincent.

CW replaces convoy losses and aborts from last impulse in both the North Atlantic and Cape St. Vincent. Also, the RN puts in strong escorts into both areas, and others, to discourage the axis from trying to initiate a submarine combat. It works, neither side chooses to try to initiate anything in both areas.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #7. RN. Italian Coast.

Off the Italian Coast the RN puts in place an amphibious force consisting of 7-3 infantry, 7-4 motorize and 1-4 infantry division. The hopes is that the turn will continue, the weather will clear and the CW will have an opportunity to get a "cheap" foothold in Sicily. No surprisingly, the CW chooses not to try to initiate a naval combat.

Turn 20. Nov/Dec 1942. Allied #7. RN. West Med.

In the West Med, however, the RN does and is successful. The RN and USN find the lone CP providing supply to Vichy North Africa and unceremoniously sinks it.
