Rotterdam falls to a combined German assault and shore bombardment.

End of impulse.

First the Japanese miss Chiang's HQ with a ground strike by D3A1s, then Umezu gets another bad roll.

An unlucky General is no good.

Indeed, your combat result was poor luck. By my calculation with the assault you had a 84.1% chance of winning the attack (i.e., taking the hex) and a 76% chance of destroying both units (i.e., destroying Chiang).

In fact, I'm surprised the Chinese selected assault. With a Blitz, your win probability does go up significantly to 96.6%. However, Chiang's survival goes up too from 24% (i.e., 100% - 76%) to 46.4%. That is, his odds of survival go from approximately 1 out 4 to almost 1 out 2.

But, a (unmodified) roll of 3 makes all this mute.

The setup of the Dutch INF in Rotterdam isn't that good at all.

It allows Germany to attack that city. If the INF would be setup in Amsterdam, that would mean that the CW could enter Rotterdam (since the Germans can't attack that city, except when they invade it our of the sea). And Rotterdam is a very nice place to have CW units in...

keith63 -> RE: New AAR Keith Vs Ian (2/15/2017 2:32:57 PM)

Thanks for that tip Centuur. This is my first game playing the Allies in years. I'm learning a lot.

Courtenay -> RE: New AAR Keith Vs Ian (2/15/2017 2:37:33 PM)

To repeat, the Chinese should not have unstacked units in clear terrain. The word for such units is "speed bumps". Get to mountains. The Chinese have a lot of those. (About the only thing the Chinese have a lot of. [:)])

keith63 -> RE: New AAR Keith Vs Ian (2/15/2017 3:10:09 PM)

Allied impulse. The RN moved more ships into the N. Sea, but naval searches revealed nothing. With the situation in China being very precarious the Chinese High Command decided to launch a series of low odds suicidal attacks.

First attack by the Chinese. Disorganized but can live with the result.

2nd Chinese attack. Much more for the chinese but we took the hex.

The turn continues but the weather takes a turn for the worse.

AXIS #7 NOV/DEC 1939

Germany land, Italy and Japan combined.

Nobody expected the Chinese to attack across the straits to take Kiungchow on Hainan. Nobody has yet informed the Emperor.

But contingencies are in place. An amph picks up the Tokyo Militia from Canton.

The Germans rail infantry corps from Warsaw to Karlsruhe and Dusseldorf, and an Alpine Corps from Lodz to Stuttgart.

There are movements, but no attacks.

The Japanese react to the fall of Wuhan by railing a garrison from Tsinan to Nanking. The Imperial Guard moves south to the mountains north of the city. The Chinese are burying their dead.

A militia occupies the vacated city of Chengchow. The Chinese in that sector have withdrawn.

There are unfortunate incidents in the city that are greatly exaggerated by American journalists in need of a scoop.

The US gets upset, roll of 1 adds a chit.

The Tokyo Militia secures the bauxite mines on Hainan.

Turn continues on a 3.

Where are the Japanese battleships? Any Chinese units on the coast are asking to get the heck shelled out of there. I see three such units.

keith63 -> RE: New AAR Keith Vs Ian (2/16/2017 2:07:31 PM)

Using Chinese mountain guides, portions of the Chinese army use a hidden mountain pass, to cut the supply lines to the Japanese Army, putting them out of supply. Then proceed to destroy them!!!

The Chinese people also have had enough and form a partisan!!

Mayhemizer_slith -> RE: New AAR Keith Vs Ian (2/16/2017 3:52:18 PM)

You can place partisan to same hex with disorganized plane (if land unit is not in hex or in ZoC) destroying plane and killing pilot. Partisans also get +1 strength in woods.

Japanese battleship groups are at Truk and Canton. You'll see some soon, no doubt. Rightly or wrongly I prioritised reinforcing the area and was short of naval moves.

Following this audacious Chinese offensive the Japanese situation in central China is critical. The Emperor has expressed surprise that the disgraced Umezu has not already fallen upon his sword.

Umezu believes he is due a decent die roll. The last time he attacked his army was immobilised against the odds, this has been exploited by my opponent.

Destroyed Pool Nov/Dec 1939

Bloodbath in China. The Nationalist offensive must count as a success?

Meanwhile Germany has taken Denmark, Poland, and Netherlands with no losses.

AXIS #1 JAN/FEB 1940

The Japanese were keen to win the initiative and did so by re-roll.

Germany land, Japan combined, Italy pass.

The weather is as bad as it can get in the western hemisphere.

Blizzards on the Red Sea coast may deter the holidaymakers.

I spy a British Imperial unit in Khartoum.

The Germans rail infantry, a mot div, and von Rundtsedt's HQ to Holland as von Bock's army group moves slowly north to deal with partisan activity in Danzig of all places. There are various other preparatory moves but no combat.

How many of you guys know what my avatar is?

My grandad did this for a living before and during WW2.

He used to say he'd been all over the world and had seen nothing.

He was a lucky guy.
