We did not suffer in the war as mainland Europe did.

But my mum was a babe in arms when the Luftwaffe blitzed Pompey in January 1941 and though she had no memory of the event suffered nightmares her whole life as a consequence and was diagnosed as war traumatised as a teen in the late 40s in an age when that was not fashionable.

Naval for the Brits. Combines for everyone else. Not much going on other than some troops shuffling.
Turn continues. Blizzard turns into snow.

AXIS #7 JAN/FEB 40

Germans rail VII SS Inf Corps from Cologne to Warsaw, von Bock surrounds partisan-infested Danzig.

There are various adjustments along the Belgian border.

The Italians transfer an Inf Div from Libya to Genoa.

In Haichow the communist partisans put up a fight against Yamamoto. The standard Japanese attack roll of 3 is just about enough.

A pro-British partisan in Danzig is overwhelmed.

Turn continues on a 7.

AXIS #11 JAN/FEB 40

German naval move, Japan land, Italy pass.

The Germans send out subs to the Faroes but the search for CW shipping fails (Axis 3 Allies 10). Troops are transported on the Baltic Sea.

Supply is restored to Umezu's Army Group. As the Chinese have again withdrawn the Japanese again occupy Changsha and also Hengyang.

Changsha is old news but Hengyang antagonises US public opinion, +1 chit.

professorhex -> RE: New AAR Keith Vs Ian (2/20/2017 9:33:16 AM)

Japanese militias attack Chinese forces east of Pakhoi. Five battleships (one more than I needed) and a bomber flying out of Canton provide support. Chinese chose blitz.

This time the Japanese get a good roll, both Chinese units are destroyed.

Destroyed pool Jan/Feb 1940.

Not much action was possible in the stormy weather. The Dutch ships were scrapped.

Another Commie Chinese partisan rears its head behind the Japanese lines. The U.S. having had enough of Japanese aggression, places an embargo on Strategic materials. The President also signs legislation to lend resources to western allies. Both of these cause some tension.

!st Allied Impulse. CW moves a large fleet into the N. Sea, but have no luck finding the Germans in the storms. Chinese pull back and shorten their line in the south. More Russian Troops are showing up at the German/Polish border.
Weather improves a bit. Will the Germans attack Belgium soon?

professorhex -> RE: New AAR Keith Vs Ian (2/21/2017 9:18:34 AM)

A look back at AXIS #1 MAR/APR 1940

All took combineds.

The Japanese used their combined move to transport a new mech div and inf to Haichow, and the inf that was in Haichow down to Canton.

The faster German ships came out to the stormy North Sea. Searches failed.

But u-boats did get lucky in the Faroes Gap.

Just the one combat round, with the one sub able to engage in this weather, but the first CW merchant shipping losses of the war (aside from Polish Dutch and Danish shipping caught in ports.) Aborts went to Liverpool.

The latest Japanese air raid on Kweiyang hit something important for a change.

The Germans railed the Hamburg Militia out to Memel and shuffled units on the Western front.

AXIS #5 MAR/APR 40

Germany and Japan land, Italy combined.

There is palpable tension along the western frontier of the Reich.

In South China Umezu's Army Group crosses the Hsiang River.

In North China Terauchi moves against partisans in his rear.

The attack is an automatic success.

End of impulse.

keith63 -> RE: New AAR Keith Vs Ian (2/21/2017 4:34:15 PM)

In the next allied impulse the 2 fleets stumbling around in the rain in the north sea found each other for a brief exchange. The turn continues with a spring snow storm raging across Europe.

AllenK -> RE: New AAR Keith Vs Ian (2/21/2017 5:33:46 PM)

That looks quite some exchange for a light cruiser to take out a battle cruiser!

keith63 -> RE: New AAR Keith Vs Ian (2/21/2017 6:17:47 PM)

No those were just the only 2 causalities. Lots of ships on both sides.

Courtenay -> RE: New AAR Keith Vs Ian (2/21/2017 6:59:09 PM)

I can just see the (posthumous) Victoria Cross the captain of the Cairo got for ramming the Scharnhorst.

(If Lt Cmdr Roope could get one for ramming Admiral Hipper with HMS Glowworm without sinking her, why not? [:)])

He didn't get it based on success (or in this case, otherwise) of the mission, but on the act of valour in the face of the enemy.

So HMS Delhi's Captain Alfred Russell is fully deserving of his Victoria Cross for ordering the ramming (and sinking) of one of the two Ugly Sisters at the Battle of Skaggerak 28th March 1940 [&o]

Poor B******s. The RN often achieved what it did inspite of its equipment - rather than because of it.....[:(]

We are sad about the Scharnhorst. Mourning cards are appearing in the windows of the houses in northern port cities.

My fault perhaps for not withdrawing after she was damaged in the first combat round.

Indeed an heroic achievement in the great tradition.

AXIS #9 MAR/APR 40

Germany combined, Italy pass, Japan naval.

Some quiet Japanese naval moves: a CV returns to some day pick up new planes, a Formosa militia takes to sea, another cp in the China Sea.
