Feb 26, 1942 The attack near Sunwu and Heiho is now on! Day one went well forcing the retreat of the garrison there. I think they have low experience and not many field arty. We took a lot of disabled though. That's bad since these units have to take the next fort plus garrison as well. Hailar is fully secured. Feb 27, 1942 Four separate subs made contact with and fired on the Minekaze, and out of 10 fish there were no hits. Oh, well. At least she was in the Georgetown area which means if she disbands we might still get a chance at her there. All TFs at Sabang were given orders to break for the IO, but unfortunately the most important one took a bit too long pulling up ramps and stowing cranes. The TF dropped the Aussie Brigade and Cavalry units was located by the Mutsu and Haruna TF and engaged at 12k yards! Yikes!! [:(] Luckily the quick ships managed to break away, even after taking some hits from the big Pagoda platforms, and only the two xAKs and one smaller xAP were lost. A lot of troops were picked (at least a message told me so) and it looks like guns, support and some vehicles were lost. Not bad considering the Aquitania took 11 hits!! She is still doing 18 knots and has only 15 float and 35 system damage. Amazing. Sign her up to the RN, get some decent guns on her and a few tubes, and lets do this again! [:D] So not good for the Allied cause, but better than I'd thought it would turn out. Feb 27, 1942 At Lashio the IJA attacks again, and this time the defenders hold with no loss of forts at 1:2. Yes!! Now the extra troops arriving should make this a very tough base to take for the Japanese. He'll need to bring in the air forces, but we have some good fighters here already, so that will be tough for a while. I'd like to hold this position until more Indian troops can hold the ground from Ledo to Myikyina to Lashio, and another Chinese corps can be bought out to move to Lashio. If I can do that and continue to build forts before summer 42, this might never fall. Feb 28, 1942 Russian subs have been nearly as bad as the USN for misses/duds in the opening days here. Another one this turn "elected not to fire" at two ASW PBs and got four DCs dropped on itself. Doh! Two CL lead a decent bombardment of Sabang. This does some damage, but I can live with it, especially considering it could have been CA or BB. I wonder what size ammo he can reload at Georgetown? I also wonder if I put some hurt on the port if that will make it harder to reload. That would be fantastic. Okay, so another goal for the already overworked bombers! Our CAs deliver a poor result at Singers. Wonder why? All good captains and high experience ships. Hmmmmmm. Tambor does come through with a hit on a TK cruising toward Honshu. Feb 28, 1942 Although I held back the sweeps today thinking the defenders were wearing down, the IJN groups still put up a good fight, downing 2 B-26 over Magwe. The bombers all did get through though, and another 5 oil hits seem to result in about 15 points more damage, if the recon is to be believed. It looks like over 110 destroyed oil points so far in less than a week of bombing at Magwe, plus the weakening of THREE fighter groups from the KB. Double the fun!! [:'(] The very real benefit of this is that I can also begin to shoot amphibs into Benkolen without too much worry about the KB showing up. Granted he could use LBA groups landed on the CVs, and no doubt will, but those will also have to come from somwhere. The most likely close spot is Palembang, so that is the next big challenge. Feb 28, 1942 I set the Albacores to ready this turn, and stationed the 2 CV RN TF just along the coast of Sumatra opposite Medan. They found some targets, but only scored one hit and sunk that one DD, the Asagao. A decent result, but there were cruisers here and they flew afternoon and evening, and there was NO CAP. Grrrrrrr! [:@] All pilots are the best that exist right now at around 50-55 exp and 60-65 torp skill. I wonder if weather affected the results that Exeter et al achieved on their last bombardment? What's the pilot fatigue like on the float planes doing the recon for the bombardment? EDIT: PS - modern Japanese DDs are gold. I think sinking Asagao rather than Yubari is probably to your benefit in the long run.

March 1, 1942 A new month brings the F4F-4 online at 45 a month, which is great. Although the wildcat gets a lot of stick in this game, it's a decent defensive plane in 42 and I've got groups in place that can use them around the map. It also has decent range for this point in the war and is service 1. That is a real benefit. The Soviet sector is getting pretty interesting. I've got to expel a brigade at Alexandrovsk, and now have 450AV in place to do that. Should be enough. It'll be interesting to see the choice he makes here. I have a feeling he'll fly a few out, let the others hold long enough that the next invasion to Shikuka can go in against only what is there now. There is only a month of the invasion bonus left, so he has to make some clear choices. Even spots in the DEI could get harder after he has to prep for them. In the central Soviet area several long battles are taking place with lots of manoeuvre going on. Near Koutou the IJA has moved out and look to be moving toward the NW, avoiding the main block to the West. That could leave an opportunity. I've started restricting hex sides and will begin to move two divisions forward soon. This is a map of the Soviet sector currently. March 1, 42, 1942 I send the DDs in to Alexandrov on the night of the 1st. The IJN has been brazenly keeping two fleet CVs and a CVL here with a few small SCTFs to protect. From the North 3 DDs raced in and 6 arrived from across the strait. Thunderstorms in the hex severely limited visibility, so the battles turned into knife fights. One DD ate a long lance in the first round in a battle that started a 1k yards! Next the Russians got in shots on DD Yugao and put her on fire for no return injuries. The 3 DD from the North then snuck in and got to the CVs and engaged from 2k yards!! Unfortunately they hadn't gotten torps reloaded. Damn. Still they got shots in on CVL Shoho that left her with fires. Always good against the Japanese. They got one more shot but didn't land any major hits and took some significant damage in return. During the day there were two more battles with the IJN CL led mini-TFs. The Soviets likely sank Mursame and damaged a few more ships. On the day it looks like 2-3 IJN DDs lost for 2 Soviet DDs, plus Shoho and Oi damaged. I'd like to have a few more of these DDs!! March 1, 1942 Up on the NE side of the Soviet position the first of the four forts along the most vulnerable rail block area is destroyed. I need to take out all of these before losing control of the skies. One down, and now two garrison units at the next against my two divisions and three arty units. Should be able to take that. After that he has two divisions up here plus some arty. My tanks that crossed the rivers are engaged with one well supported IJA division, and another is sitting in Heiho. I've got two more divisions crossing the river in about 7-8 turns. So if nothing changes that would be 5 divisions vs 2 divisions, but it's good defensive territory and our guys will be a bit worn down. We'll see. March 2, 1942 Not much happening in the night on March 2, but the day opens with lots of action. The Tainan group, seemingly the only nearly intact big LBA fighter group the IJN is now fielding altogether, moves to Magwe to defend the oil. Miraculously the sweeps do well here, wear down the CAP significantly, and the 4Es still come in for 2 more hits on the oil. In addition, some more A6Ms are taken out along with some of their very good pilots (or maybe somewhat good pilots at this stage. These did not seem like the starting crew). I will stop hitting Magwe for now as the 4Es are getting some damage and need a rest. I have to have them for the Palembang op very soon, and it'll take 3-4 days to get group back to 2/3 operational. Feel good about today though, since this also means the Tainan group is also now understrength! [:)] By not hitting it again for a while too maybe he'll have to decide how much to leave here in protection. In the next day I'll try to catch up completely with the AAR. Only just over a week behind play, but I'm sure anyone interested has already diverted to Lowpe's AAR. March 2, 1942 Sabang takes a hit. This base is really a diversion, and the main force is moving around to Oosthaven, Benkolen and Merak. I'll try to take Oosthaven with a small Dutch unit to save the partially prepped division for Palembang. I should be able to land about 1,000 AV there if not interfered with by these surface raiders. A force of old British BBs is also heading for Sabang and will try to take on these IJN raiders eventually. If he does shift south they will aim to get a supply convoy to Singapore. March 3, 1942 The IJA is making a concerted effort for Wenchow and it's definitely on the cusp of falling, but a few Japanese divisions are taking heavy disablements in the effort. Lashio is also holding with some gusto now that the Burma division is being slowly added to the mix. March 3, 1942 Koutou defensive fortress finally falters, but isn't completely destroyed yet. When it falls that will give our troops access to the swamps and the retreating Japanese army of four divisions we've been aiming to encircle. We might not catch the divisions now, but just might get around for some extra territory, which could be just as good.
