Feb 17-18, 1942


SUBS: Subs encounter a few massive amphib TFs that look to be heading North. I think he's trying to get Toyohara back, but it could be something more serious. I'll start pulling the paras out of Toyohara and back to the coast, since the last thing I want is an invasion on the Eastern Soviet coastline. I've got some reserve divisions moving into strat mode as well to be in the region.

DEI: A set of three IJN DDs nails the lone xAKL I sent in to Sabang as a feeler and more importantly to provide supply for a CAP in the next few days. About 200 supply landed before it was sunk, so that's mission accomplished. The IJN here is not strong, and soon will be tested.

The 4Es hit the troops moving to Singers for a little love tap on the 17th. He has some decent CAP there now, so I'll try for the airbase. I'd like to close it, but won't if he's persistent in defence just yet. I mainly want him to have to keep defending so Palembang and the Malay penninsula are less well stocked with fighters.

SOVIETS: Nearly break through and wipe out the 1st Border Defense fort on the 17th and it should be a day or two more before these troops will flood forward. The next hex is defended by a division in x3, but we have two there already with two more and 6 tank brigades on the way. [:)]

CAP traps near Sunwu put the hurt on Soviets bombers and biplanes on the 18th to the total of about 50 planes lost. Ouch!! He layered a combined A6M and Oscar CAP. Caught me by surprise and I'll have to be careful now. So will he, as I have now two MiG sweeping groups.

BURMA: The IJA gets to Lashio finally where a bought out Chinese Corps is installed. Good defensive territory, and gives a chance for fort building at Paoshan. The IJA gets a 1:3 in their first try.

Here is a shot of what the Japanese can expect. Should bump up a bit more in the next few days, approaching 1400AV. The divisions are well rested but still under 50exp, although getting closer. They have good leaders and the HQ leaders are the best I can buy.

Feb 19, 1942


SUBS: Lots of subs hit near Toyohara trying to thwart the invasion there, but mainly just getting subs damaged. Another hits a mine at Hakodate. Must have reacted in there.

DEI: The IJ has landed on upper Sumatra via barge and this plus the IJA move into Singers triggers the activation of naval and amphibious elements hanging deep off of the Sumatran coast. These will move in to Sabang, dropping off two base forces and two large AA units, one 3.7" guns and the other 40mm Bofors. An Aussie brigade is not far behind, and will land within a few days. These forces will attempt to build the airfield to support enough fighters to then move down the peninsula and possibly land on Malaya behind the IJA that has just moved into Singers. I don't hope to recapture these areas permanently, but to hold them to support Singapore, which has become very strong. The British believed it was impregnable. Lets test that theory by supporting it.

PACIFIC: All up North. I've started to make some daring landings in quiet areas of Cent Pac. I'll show where soon. I want all units to land and the base to build before anything spots the incursion.

SOVIETS: Sallys launch to Nakhodka near Vlad and are almost all shot down. Not sure if this is a mistake or a probe for future invasion data. Either way, we are developing a reserve at Voroshilov to prevent incursions in the South and also have the DDs at Vlad to shoot in on a suicide mission should the IJ appear in force. The coastal guns are strong up here so hopefully that would deter any thoughts, but during the invasion bonus months you never know.

Our run at Hailar also gets jumped and we lose another 30 planes. Yikes! Forgot to turn that one off after last turn and Lowpe picked the right spot to CAP. Still, lots of bombers to use when I find the right moment, and the MiGs are just building up. I will unleash them again soon.

The troops surrounding Hailar are in place and will begin to move in now to completely surround troops there. The rail has been blocked for about a week, and all units moving in are tanks so will likely beat his troops. This should be a nice haul of about 20k IJA troops destroyed. I'm sure he'll fly some out, but that is why I've been trying to hit the airfields hard for days, so that once he realised the transports wouldn't fly in.

I am really enjoying orchestrating the land war with Soviet troops. Their combination of strong arty, solidly build divisions, plentiful Has with multiple text range and great AA in addition to the tanks everywhere give so much flexibility. There are some more surprises in store, but I've also got to watch my back. I know the IJ could take a risk, slow other ops and land on the weakly defended coastal hexes. There re some brigades coming soon I'd like to walk to the more distant bases to settle in and give a more solid defence there.

BURMA: The IJA Das again at Lashio and the time gets to a very close 1:2, but takes more infantry squads disabled. The Chinese unit here is taking replacements, so if there is time between these, we could actually add to the units. I have nothing else to add in here, but I can distract these guys soon with some bombing runs.

SINGAPORE CROSSING!!


SINGAPORE: The IJA launches a shock against the fortress and takes massive casualties! Defending forces had made 25 AV a day gains over the past few days to get up to 1401AV and the bigger units take almost no damage, including the forts staying at 4. One Aussie brigade has about 10 disabled infantry squads, but the two Indian divisions are looking good. Some of the smaller battalions which make up about a third of the defenders were a bit messed up, but that's to be expected. [8D][&o]

Reports show the equivalent of a full IJA division destroyed with two more disabled.[X(] I couldn't have asked for more, and now supply becomes the critical element. We need to increase forts to level 5 before the next DA, continue to support he defending air forces, and supply the bombardments I'll commence next turn. I want to see if we can kill off some of the disabled squads before he builds forts and keep the units fatigued and disruption up. He's got some arty though, so we'll adjust as needed. It may be more useful to bombard by air and sea. I'll send in three CAs to start in tomorrow.

So far nothing has gotten near our forces at Sabang, and more cruisers join tomorrow. I'll send a bombardment to Georgetown, where I believe the IJN is basing, in a few days, but will hit with 4Es tomorrow.

Feb 20, 1942


SUBS: The Soviet subs finally go nuts at Toyohara. Four subs hit four different ships, likely sinking at least 2 including an AV (confirmed due to Jake losses on the ground). A big LSD is also hit and will have to transit back through the net with some float damage.

DEI: The IJN DDs in the Malayan area bombard Medan. Perfect. I'd like it if they ignored Sabang for a few. The unit landed on Sumatra is a regiment. Larger than I thought he could get over with a few barges, but still manageable since we have a few Aussies on the way. The more stuck battling it out on Sumatra the fewer he can cycle through Singers.

Tarakan is now getting a lot of focus from IJN BBs ,meaning the troops there are withering. It was a good stand, but they will fall in the next attack. Then I can bomb the oil. [:)]

PACIFIC: Troops landing. No detection.

CBI: The troops at Lashio are bracing for the next assault. Bombers are getting ready to move in.

The tanks in the deserts are still being hit, and moving. They will continue to be in range for a good while though, and out of LR CAP range. I think they may not make it back to China.

SOVIETS: Tanks make it to the hex near Mutankiang. This will be a defining week. If this hex falls the Japanese position will be difficult to maintain. I'll have three separate thrusts toward central Manchuria, only one of which is potentially going to be more easily contained. This in addition to the eradication of forward IJA bases on the rail lines, at the extended depth of Hailar, and hopefully Anshan just after. If those rail heads are in Soviet hands it will be a much more concentrated battle in the South, and that favours the Soviets, who have a huge advantage in troop numbers.

So for invasions, stick them all in the destination hex, as here. This hasn't worked at Singers with bombardments, though. I've had up to 10 subs in hex and a big BB TF has gone untouched.

I assume this is very bold because :

1) You are being secretive...[:D]

2) Japan must already have its hands full facing onslaughts in Manchuria, Singapore. I presume Burma is sitting playing cricket and drinking tea .... Oz is loading troops for defense "off the Oz continent"....

Your only difficulty would be a lack of carrier striking capability; and that will take time to resolve.

I have experimented extensively with sub numbers in a hex, both singly and in pairs. Two TFs of subs seems to be most effective, although three TFs will also be better than one TF. I mostly use my subs in pairs because when one of the pair gets an attack on the enemy or even just a look at them, the other sub very often also gets an attack (because of the D/L increase you mention). So two TFs of two subs gives you four subs and very good chances of an attack on merchantmen (because of their slower speed) as opposed to a SCTF or ACTF.

I use the paired subs where I know the enemy is operating. If I am hunting, single subs cover a wider area.

PS - when joining the two subs in a TF, put the captain with better Leadership in charge. That skill has more to do with TF effectiveness and things like Aggression and Naval Skill are used when the sub actually engages in combat (whether in a TF or not).

Good to know. The two sub Bfs are tough for detection of the subs though ,so I'd use them only if there aren't so many hunters around. Lowpe is still massing forces. Maybe in a while when things slow I can try that along known paths of transport.

Naval skill should do the work of finding the enemy and evading DCs so I usually prioritise that, then aggressiveness, then leadership. Never really sandboxed it though.

The trouble is, I just tried it at Shikuka and it wouldn't allow me to "see" another country options even though a USA unit was in hex. Does it have to be more than a certain number of squads?

I did find out I can base a Cat group at Shikuka even though it's a Soviet (captured) base, so maybe it's irrelevant to change nationality. I'll try to fly in some 4Es and see if that works! [:)]

Allied units have landed and seem fine so far on Soviet (national) bases as well. I haven't tried to move them or do anything with them yet, so hopefully they aren't interred before next turn! [:D]

Based on the conditions you mention, it may not be so bold. It would be in a normal game.

Feb 21, 1942


SUBS: Another Japanese xAK sunk. The IJN got one of ours off of Cali too.

DEI: The CAs go in and make a clean bombardment at Singers getting a few more disabled. Nothing to change anything, but might keep disruption high. Next turn they'll target Johore Baru, which is accessible through Singers and hosts a good 35 fighters today. Keeping damage on that base could limit limit his CAP, his supply and keep his incoming units damaged as they arrive.

I'll target troops at Singers with the 4Es. They went to Georgetown today but the 12 Nates there actually did well and fought the beasts off. Not much damage to the airfields, and nothing to the port, but an anchor symbol popped up today. I'll send recon to investigate. I can't imagine it's an AE/AD supplying the DDs, so it must be DD/TB waiting to pounce that somehow passed Singers. I hate that ships are able to get through the straits without getting smashed by 15 inch guns. [:-]

I'm going to start mining the hex that allows passage to the IO through the straits. I'll have to be careful with subs, but it could be worth it. I have a feeling he'll want to get out there soon.

I set a B-17 group to hit troops at Benkolen. Trouble is they redirected to Palembang. That would usually be disastrous, but it sees most of the CAP has shifted to Malaya. So that is discovery number 1. The second thing is even more interesting. There are no troops at Benkolen. He moved that naval guard down the coast to take Padang.

Two Dutch units one hex out will move into Benkolen. If the Japanese don't notice, they'll take the base. That will open up some opportunities! [:)]
PACIFIC: All going well. Still no detection.

CBI: Decided to shift some planes from China to Burma to see what he has there defending Magwe's oil. I can put 4 fighter groups at Lashio for sweeps and I have 35 B-26 just arrived to try and hit the base. Fingers crossed.

The IJA DAs again at Lasio, but this time gets a 1:4 and loses twice as many disabled. I'll start shifting more troops in since this is looking good.

SOVIETS: Troops manage to get into Hailar and trap all units in the base. A DA tomorrow.

The AI may not have presented the option of changing base admin to US because there were not enough PP to do so.

So I need some US troops to get to these spots so I can haul up the stars and stripes and then, potentially, I could also bring in bombers, fighters, and whatever else I wanted to bring from anywhere. The Soviets have no transport planes though, only the Patrol boats, MBR-2. So the inland bases will require some other Allied transports to move troops too. I'll be flying some from Ledo through China once things are in place.

The trouble is, I just tried it at Shikuka and it wouldn't allow me to "see" another country options even though a USA unit was in hex. Does it have to be more than a certain number of squads?

I did find out I can base a Cat group at Shikuka even though it's a Soviet (captured) base, so maybe it's irrelevant to change nationality. I'll try to fly in some 4Es and see if that works! [:)]

Allied units have landed and seem fine so far on Soviet (national) bases as well. I haven't tried to move them or do anything with them yet, so hopefully they aren't interred before next turn! [:D]

The AI may not have presented the option of changing base admin to US because there were not enough PP to do so.

Can I just say this is the most fun I've had playing this game? [:)]

I know it's to my advantage that Lowpe decided to keep the Soviets active when he blundered into the coastline, but still I think he is also finding it intriguing, unusualyl challenging and lots of fun. We're each getting our shots in, each reacting to the other's strategic challenges, and it's just an unusual war from the very beginning.

The turn is delayed while I think he recovers from the shock of having his units unexpectedly surrounded at Hailar and tries to figure out how his rail has been blocked without him knowing. (He mentions a bug, but it's only a Soviet infantry bug). [:D]

The four ships attacked today makes me feel like I need to bunch up subs even more. The detection increases seem to feed the attacks by other subs in the hex. I have experimented extensively with sub numbers in a hex, both singly and in pairs. Two TFs of subs seems to be most effective, although three TFs will also be better than one TF. I mostly use my subs in pairs because when one of the pair gets an attack on the enemy or even just a look at them, the other sub very often also gets an attack (because of the D/L increase you mention). So two TFs of two subs gives you four subs and very good chances of an attack on merchantmen (because of their slower speed) as opposed to a SCTF or ACTF.

I use the paired subs where I know the enemy is operating. If I am hunting, single subs cover a wider area.

PS - when joining the two subs in a TF, put the captain with better Leadership in charge. That skill has more to do with TF effectiveness and things like Aggression and Naval Skill are used when the sub actually engages in combat (whether in a TF or not).


Good to know. The two sub Bfs are tough for detection of the subs though ,so I'd use them only if there aren't so many hunters around. Lowpe is still massing forces. Maybe in a while when things slow I can try that along known paths of transport.

Naval skill should do the work of finding the enemy and evading DCs so I usually prioritise that, then aggressiveness, then leadership. Never really sandboxed it though.

In this case I had I think 8 Soviet subs (single boat TFs) in one hex and got four hits from four different subs.

In the night RN cruisers find the IJN DDs near the Sumatran coast and engage, crossing the T. With 42% moonlight and this advantage, plus a huge advantage in gunnery, I'd have though we could get a better result. Somehow the Japanese got in a few shots and skedaddled. I'll try again next turn. Mining of the Singers strait entry point will commence next turn so that these DDs will have a hard time escaping and anything else on the way may encounter some surprises passing through.

Our subs will be restricted accordingly and rebased so they don't automatically choose this as a return route when replenishing or to fix damage.

After this the Abiel and Triophant ran into another massive barge convoy. I may have to investigate tomorrow and send a bunch of small Bfs at Langsha and Georgetown to hit anything moving. It'd be nice to thwart these efforts and it's going to be hard to supply the troops on Sumatra in combat if they can't control the waters here.

Abdiel is being sent up to be used for fast transport, since she is really fast and holds some cargo. Once the DDs are neutralised I should be able to send her form Sabang in one turn with 550 supply to Singers.

The RN cruisers bombard Johore Baru and get good results. Some 14 squads destroyed and 39 disabled. Also good intel, showing a regiment here (probably an element of a yet to be formed division, so nice to hit it and get some squads thrown out of whack).

Also got 5 total supply hits, which will add up if we can keep this going. He needs supply to replace destroyed squads after the crossing.

This also helped later when the air groups here were in action over Singers with a few missing planes and some less than tip top morale. [:)]

A surprise strike on Magwe oil went swimmingly. Only 12 Nates were defending, and the three sweeping groups of Hurri IIb and Buffs took care of them before the bombers arrived. The 35 Marauders did their job, getting a total of 22 hit to the oil! Well done for rookie pilots on their first mission, all about 45 exp and 55-60 skill.

I'll be curious to see what actual damage this has done during the turn, if I have eyes on it next turn. I might have to recon later.

The question is, do I just reload and go again or is he going to move in 50 fighters and really try to protect the remaining oil?

The first day of bombing troop at Singers goes well. Not amazing results, but the fact that troops were CAPed over this base with its 120 fighters makes me happy. The Japanese groups included four landed groups from CVs as well as four Sentais of IJAAF planes. I'm wondering if some of these were even CAPing from Palembang. Altogether only 24 planes got up to contest so those groups must have been on partial LR CAP, or really depleted. Or both.

I'll be interested to see how much is left at Johore Baru tomorrow and if any CAP is up at Singers. He needs to get this base under control, but the MTBs, mines, subs CD guns and now CAs there to defend will make it that much harder, and from the air the Hurris and P-38s make sweeping a dubious choice. I have to start checking mine pools to see where I can draw form still. I want to save Soviet mines for their ports, but Dutch, British and US mines are all fair game for Singers and the straits. I think I'm out of the mines the Abdiel uses, but the subs might have some left for the RN and I know the USN subs can still mine. I need about 80-100 in the hex near Singers to be dropped at once and soon.

The bombardment at Singers is tough, and his arty is strong. We lose 10 and have 15 infantry squads disabled. Won't do that again, but it's nice to see what's here. I'll stick to air and sea bombardments from now on. [;)]

The first attack at Hailar takes the base. Too bad the division that was here left. In any case this will solidify the northern border area and bag another good 10k of IJA troops. I'll see if he decides to reinforce Anshan before moving there, but if he does that may leave other opportunities around the map here. Interesting! What patch/game version are you playing? I am thinking the "problem" may have been addressed in the various updates or mods.

IMHO not all that surprising. In February 1942 the IJN has a major advantage in Night-time surface combat, and the "E" class CL's are among the weakest in the Allied OOB. 9,000 yards is a fair distance for WWI-vintage guns.

Because most of these ships have seen extensive action they have good night experience. That was one of my goals in playing aggressively early in the DEI while there were still many bases to retreat to and fix up damaged ships. Once the CVs were in trouble the damage spiralled too often into sunk ships, but the ones that made have good night EXP. These two cruisers are about 55 and 61 night EXP, not quite Japanese, but good. Daytime they're both in the mid 60s.

So I do expect a lot!! I change out captains, watch EXP gain and try to generally put he best crews into action. I get that these are old and the guns aren't the best, but the IJN DDs here are also from the 20s, and small, with old guns. Just gotta catch them long enough to really engage.
