Chinese bombers use 250 lb bombs which have little effect on tanks. But having fighters with small bombs and 12.7mm MGs attacking at 1000 feet seems to knock out IJA tanks pretty good.

Thanks. Made me look up some stuff here. I never considered that the bombs weren't big enough! [X(]

As it turns out both the 250lb GP bomb and the 100kg GP bomb should work against two of the likely IJA tank models currently in use, but not against the other two (or future models). The 1000lb SAP/GP bombs used by the Banshees will work just fine.

Last turn a Blenheim did get a hit and destroyed a "vehicle" outright. This could just be a motorised support, but that's fine too. Motorised support have no armor value and destroying or disabling them will still hurt the unit and raise disruption. Killing tanks is better, but I'll take anything here.

There are no fighters with 50cal guns with the available range to hit these guys right now, so it'll have to be what's there. Hopefully no thunderstorms tomorrow.

Also, there is fuel unloading at Petropavlovsk that I may need after a flank run. [:)]

You won't be able to refuel US TF directly from Soviet port. Do it either via replenishment TFs or ship bunkers.

I wasn't sure but thanks, I'll use the ships delivering it then. That should still work.

I always took it as the improbability of a direct hit on a tank + the small size of the bomb that made them ineffective. 500 lb bombs seem to cause more disablements and 1000 lb bombs get the occasional kill. At least that is what I seem to have seen - bearing in mind that confirmation bias is a thing! [;)]

SUBS: Soviet sub was sighted by escorts of BB Hyuga and CA Myoko near the HI. More subs restoring in.

DEI: Lightnings take out another 6-8 zeros and open the door for the 4Es to bomb Djambi. Only 8 4Es fly and we lose one B-17D. They get 2 oil hits though, so it's worth it. Everything will stand down tomorrow.

PACIFIC:

CHINA: Hurris keep on at Hong Kong. They get a 2:1 sweep against Oscars, zeros and Nates. I'll have to rest them for a few now.

SOVIETS: The CVs get most of the way up the Kuriles after the Soviets plastered Bihoro. No strikes.

This is a big turn where the Soviet tanks cut the rail at Mishan. Another several divisions and lots of arty are coming in the next few days. I'll bombard to see what we have here. I see movement arrows from Koutou so I'm guessing he's trying to rail back, which means I have to both be careful until I know what's coming and also want to hit them while they're in strat mode if the do move. [;)]

Got a few more fires going at Mukden. No recon so I can't see if they're doing anything though.

SIGINT: This is interesting. A piece of a bare bones garrison unit at Seisin, the base next to Rashin. Not much to deal with. I'll have to see what others are there.

1st Manchukuo Distr/ Division is located at Seishin(109,46).

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: obvert (A) vs Lowpe (J) (8/15/2017 5:27:42 PM)

Itching to get this turn and get moving to the next replay. Jeff hasn't sent it back yet.

This will be a true test of the Soviet troops at Mishan. There is a good IJA division there and possibly more on the way. We'll know more when we see the recon results. The Soviets will attack either way, and there will be massive bombing raids beforehand. This is the time to use them.

Went through the opponents there. Nothing too surprising. The AA is weak so I might drop bombers to 6k. Only 12 x 75mm/40 T88.

The Soviets are all less experienced by about 15-20 points, so that could be trouble if a lot more rails in. The mode should make it difficult for him though if that happens.

Also ... just looked up the units in the Western deserts of China. Those two tank units both have the Type 95 light and Type 89A mediums. So they will all be vulnerable to both 100kg GP and 250lb GP bombs. [:)]

He also bought out one of those units to send to China rather than keeping it in Manchuria. Probably before Soviet activation. Curious what else was sent out early.

What are the chances for anything else other than first all available Kwantung tanks, then all available arty starting with the heaviest? Japan did not have PPs to complete stage 2 and start buyig out infantry or engineers I guess.

Some heavy arty are incredibly cheap so those are what I move almost immediately. Same with combat engineers. Those and the recon regiments, combat engineers and tanks. If he moved any pars of uncombined divisions it could be a problem for him.

SUBS: The Gar contacted a CS cruiser TF near Formosa. I've vectored in a few more, so hopefully we get an attack.

DEI: Mostly quiet. No sweeps or bombing runs.

PACIFIC: The CVs continue toward the Aleutians with no molestation fro subs yet, but I'm sure they're coming.

CHINA: We hit the tanks. The 250lb bombs do the trick and 28 vehicles are destroyed or disabled. These two units will now be crushed as two corps are walking into Kushan and the bombing will continue. I've spotted a few other units marching toward Lanchow, but a long way off in the desert. I'll try to bomb them as well to see what he's got there.

SOVIETS: A bombardment shows the Soviets vastly outnumber the IJ at Mishan, so unless reinforcements rail in tomorrow, we should eject them from the base after a turn or two. Might be better if it takes longer, wrecks more squads be a retreat. The armor took a hit in the bombardments, but hopefully won't be so brittle when attacking.

Wenchow is invested. I'll be interested to see how much he brought here. The base is in x3 with 3 forts so far, and has about 5k supply and 500-600 AV.

My Wenchow held out until late Dec 42, but I had about 900 AV there. BB TF bombardment helps reduce that time though.

Feb 3-4, 1942

UPDATE: Been a while since my last update. Work started again, so time has been hard to find with two games going and a little daughter to manage at home. I think I'll have some time now to catch up in the last few days. Things aren't what I'd usually call quiet, but it's not quite as intense as this games been for the first month and a half.

SUBS: The Seadragon finds a big TF with some injured ships in it. He's been shielding the damaged BBs and CA with xAK and lots of PBs. The subs find them, but often shoot for escorts or transports. Grrrrrrr.

DEI: The 4Es are resting up for a big move! [;)]

No major happenings. Trying to get better search to see BB bombardments coming here. They've been very sneaky. Singers approaching 1300AV ready and waiting. Got to forts 4 and still growing.

PACIFIC: The USN CVs continue to make their way to safety. All good there in avoiding subs and other hazards so far.

CHINA: Definitely getting to the tanks in the Western deserts of China now. They don't seem to like the attention. They're turning around and heading back through the rough to the SE. [:)]

SOVIETS: The Soviet air force is hitting pretty good now in the Eastern bulge that is developing from Mishan to Koutou. We're tightening the hold and also moving to contain these 50-60k IJA troops. It'd be nice to wipe them out, but even wearing them down is good.

Mishan was taken o the 3rd and the fort still stood into the attack on the 4th. I'll be happy to wipe out a few more of these forts. They do slow down movement here.

Troops will move in all direction N, E and SW to solidify and extend this position. More will fill in from the rear. We're also planning an encircling of Northern Japanese outposts including Hailar. Troops are just getting into position for that move. There are a LOT of Russian troops, and a LOT of tanks and guns. [8D]

SUBS: Japanese subs are beginning to swarm in the Aleutians. They haven't yet had much success, luckily.

DEI: More hits on Djambi after Lightnings clear out the several early model Tojos at the base. We did lose an LB-30 to flak. Only one group is using these planes, the best bombers online currently. The 6 total hits on the oil is well worth it, getting Djambi into a position of having more wells destroyed than there are operational.

IJA naval guards try again at Tarakana and again are rudely repulsed. [:)]

SOVIETS: Some night strikes continue to pile on the damage at Harbin. I'll keep hitting various bases in range of the DB-3M and see what we get, usually at night, but occasionally in the day with MiG sweeps. We have maybe 8-10 weeks of good hunting before Japanese airframe production catches up and new models come online to take supremacy.

Bombing of the retreated 19th division continues. The pursuing tank brigades also get to work quickly and pile on the hurt one hex out of Koutou. Another 82 infantry squads destroyed and retreat forced. This one'll be pretty smashed by the time the rest of our troops arrive to push it back further at Koutou. Also sending units toward Mutankiang to hit the next border fort along that road.

The IJA wipes out our day too late para-assault on Mutankiang. That's 1/3 of the 202nd para brigade wiped out and only 1 new squad/month, so that's it.

We've just found a sneaky attempt to block the rail near Heiho in the middle of the long and sparsely defended line. Luckily I've been keeping a good 4-5 divisions here until I can neutralise these kinds of threats, and a few units are also railing by that might stop and deal with this. I've got two divisions walking now to meet the crossing point, and hopefully they arrive in time. Not sure when this all starts here.

The white arrows all over the place are places where we are trying to encircle and also cut forward rail lines for the IJA. I don't want to get locked down and then have 3k AV rail to the edge of the map North or NE and get caught out. So I'd like to cut his forward rail posts off and then was back and hopefully destroy those units. It'll force an interesting problem for him.

This is all good defensive territory around Heiho and Koutou, but I think we have more troops until the summer at least when more IJA units could be released. I'd like to take advantage. Near Hailar the Soviet tanks and cavalry should have a big advantage n the clear and open territory with all those zig-zagging roads. I think he's got at least a division there, but we're bringing a LOT more, and of course the plentiful Soviet arty units.

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: obvert (A) vs Lowpe (J) (9/3/2017 10:15:59 AM)

Feb 6, 1942

SUBS: Permit manages to land three working fish on an xAK near Saigon. Damn. Missuse of valuable resources!! How about a CV or BB for those? [:(]

DEI: The IJN sends in a TF with Haruna, Fuso and Mutsu. Of course this means they all ate a mine! There were some DMS here too which seemed to finally prompt the CD guns into actions. Scratch two DMS. No shots hit the BBs od DDs though, sadly.

The IJN bombardment does get through, but the cost vs benefit here has to have him a bit worried. About 15 planes are destroyed on the ground, including 2 precious P-38Es, but these BBs will likely have to go to the yard, so that's 3 of the 10 out of action for a bit, plus a few more destroyers at least in serious danger if not sunk. Nice!

Another 150 USA and RAAF fighters are approaching the DEI. I plan to make a big move soon. It'll take a lot of prep, but I'd like to put Palembang in some danger. This means I'll have to get a base to sweep from in range. A tall order. It's 7 hexes from Singers, max range for P-38Es, and 7 hexes from Batavia. I might need to shut it down another way, which could mean reintroducing some RN naval ships. The means air cover on the approaches. That means a lot more fighters moving in now.

A strike at Balikpapan gets 2 oil hits and a few downed fighters for some damaged B-17Es. The Nates do better than expected, but I feel like we should get more hits here too.
PACIFIC:

CHINA: Had some SB-III Chinese bomers jumped. Lost 5 of them.

SOVIETS: The three divisions moving to Rashin arrive and bombard. I should have probably trusted recon and just DAed. It's 900 vs 200 AV here and our units are much stronger. There are movement arrows next door, and I hope we have one turn to start in here before they arrive. Tense!

The Japanese defend the air at Koutou and get some Soviets, but other bombing is effective nearby. I'll make sure to sweep better in the next few turns around here.

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: obvert (A) vs Lowpe (J) (9/9/2017 1:02:14 PM)

Feb 7, 1942

DEI: P-40E sweep Balikpapan to prep for HB coming in and do pretty well. I've been getting more groups into the area dn soon there will be enough to challenge Palembang and hopefully Balikpapan. The issue is bases in range. I'm secretly preparing a few more, but I may have to rely on basic escorts and LR CAP too.

Nice to note that the ground defending there is Akagi_1. Wow. No KB for a while then, and possibly no 80 exp pilots left considering my 50exp guys did pretty well. [8D]

PACIFIC: The Aleutians just got a few loads of new troops, supply and fuel. The CVs are slowly inching back to the Seattle area to repair. I need a jumping off base for paras into the Kuriles to transport troops to Russia. Sending them to a dot near Attu.

CHINA: Wechow bombarded.

SOVIETS:Lots going on! The best is that Shikuka falls!! [&o]

The Karafuto brigade was worn down by air strikes and succumbs on first attack. Now to finish them off. This will mean a possible great base to work from against the HI. Or that it forces the Japanese to really allocate forces here for a counter invasion. I don't think they can relax here. I'm trying to get some US units over to flip the base to US control. Might not work, but worth a try. Then construction units could flow in and transform the defences quickly. I have some combat engineers in the Aleutians that could be flown in quickly if I can get the logistics worked out.

At Rashin I've decided the three Soviet divisions will abort the attack. After two days the base has been reinforced, and more looks to be on the way. The tanks and arty are days away for the Soviets, so maybe the better opportunity is along the forts line just two hexes north. That hex looks lightly held and if removed, could lead to a joining of Soviet forces near Mutankiang. I'm shifting alll tanks, arty and two divisions that way, and the Rashin forces will back track to hold the defensive line it new Southern area.

DB-3Ms got a few fires started at Mukden. I'll keep on for a day or two, and then shift back to Harbin where I can operate in daylight with MiG sweeps.

For the first time Sallys attack one of the Soviet ground units near Yenki, but some I-153 defend and shoot a few down as well. Nice.

Working on the border defence forts near Mishan. Grinding them down slowly.

BBfanboy -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: obvert (A) vs Lowpe (J) (9/9/2017 1:25:20 PM)

Friendly bases do not flip control, even if you vacate all the Soviet units and load in a lot of US units. You will have to pay PP to change base administration at Shikuka. If it helps with bomber basing it will be worth it.

Yes. I'll have to pay PPs. I get that bases don't flip themselves when occupied. I will flip it if I can get US troops there. That is the challenge though.

If he sees it go US flag one day it'll set off all kinds of alarm bells I'm sure. The pressure to then act will open other opportunities in the area I really want to target. The oil. Some other plans just getting into action. [:)]

OK - now I understand that your use of the word "flip" in the earlier post did not mean you thought it would auto-flip, but that you would make it happen with PP. I kinda thought you would know that you had to buy it out but I have only seen "flip" used in the sense of auto-flip, so I commented. Sorry if it sounded like I was trying to tell you "how to suck eggs". (Do Brits use that expression)?

SUBS: A few I-boats hanging around the West Coast. Interesting. My ASW air pilots are nearly trained! [:)]

DEI: Chikuma and others bombard Bandjermasin. This puts a damper on my sweeping activity over Balikpapan. Almost no engineers here either, so this will be long lasting damage. I'll try to extricate the damaged planes however possible.

Some SBD show up to sink two troop laden xAK near Jolo with no CAP over them. Nice! [:'(]

PACIFIC:

CHINA: A combined service raid crush oil and industry at Sian. I'll move some AVG here to defend better. He's got two A6M groups here though which is great. Rather here than in the DEI or Russia. Oil nearly destroyed. That oil usually goes to Japan, so I'm not unhappy it's getting hit.

SOVIETS: The DB-3T get their first naval success by sinking two troop laden APDs and a DMS that seem to have picked something up fro Shikuka. I'll keep them on even though there is no escort. They seem to get through somehow regardless.

Finally got through one of the Border forts near Mishan. Now on to Koutou. There are 3-4 supported divisions in this pocket and we're bringing 3 directly at them and have 3 more to move behind and around. Plus a few tanks! [:)]

I apologise for the lack of updates. This game really deserves a dual AAR relatively up to date. It's such an unusual situation and such fun to play. Lowpe is constantly changing things up, setting traps, surprising the Allies with swift jabs and strong uppercuts.

I'll get a few updates in here to catch up in the next two days. Singers is now the big focus!! [:)]

SUBS: Got a nice hit on AO Notoro courtesy S-36 near Jolo. Sub successes have been rare lately, but it looks like he's also starting to moe injured ships again. S-34 also runs into a big injured ship TF, and I did see a message that two of this second TF showed up on the sunk list. I'm sure they're not, but avoiding subs can result in damaged ships gaining more damage as they manoeuvre.

DEI: Some Nates thwart a strike at Samarinda, and down a P-40 while they're at it. Those pilots are green, so not unexpected. We do get three more hits on Djambi oil though![8D]

PACIFIC: The CVs plow through Northern waters at a steady pace with no interference so far, heading back to the WC.

CHINA: Still pounding IJA tanks in the deserts.

SOVIETS: Finally destroyed the border fort near Mishan. Now on to Koutou where the Japanese are stubbornly hanging out with what looks like more than two divisions (~50k troops). A few other groups of troops are moving to the West, and our divisions are moving to cut them off near Kiamuze.

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: obvert (A) vs Lowpe (J) (9/16/2017 8:53:55 AM)

Feb 10-12, 1942

PACIFIC: The IJN strikes back!! A mini-KB steams North and takes out a Russian transport TF (unloaded) moving toward Alaska. A big strike, but really well timed for me to get other more valuable Bfs out of the way. I had a few nearly in range which will now jet to the Homer area to escape. All Bfs at Dutch will pull up anchors and move back for at least a while until it seems the coast is clear.

DEI: Djambi is swept by Lightnings again, taking out another 8-10 A6M. Gotta keep him stretched! The 4Es shift to Singers to improve bombing capacity which results in 22 hits at Djambi on the 12th.

CHINA: Still crushing tanks. Nothing else happening.

SOVIETS: A cruiser bombardment hits Toyohara and wipes out my engineers. This looks like the beginning of a renewed focus on Sakhalin. I'll not hold here if he comes strong, so I have to be careful there is no amphib move behind my major troops to Alexandrov. I have some engineers on the way to Shikuka and once they arrive will move the division back.

We finally destroy the remnants of the Karafuto Brigade and Special base force at Shikuka. That took a while, but well worth it. These are huge troop losses for Japan at this stage, adding to our VPs and forcing a complete rebuilding of a major free brigade, of which there are not many available. The North struggles for troops for a while. Most of the big units must concern themselves with the PI and Singers. Those places will be tough, so it may be a while before the Soviets face free troops in addition to those in place.

Major fires started at Harbin through night bombing.

Feb 13-14, 1942

SUBS: L-12 hits an AD near Ominato.

DEI: Oscars on the menu today. I want to hit Johore Baru a bit to lessen supply and ruin the airfield for the coming push into Singers. One Oscar Ia group here which doesn't fare well against the P-38s. [:)]

PACIFIC: Ships escape and run to the North. The mini-KB seems to be heading back SW.

SOVIETS: The bombers get jumped near Mishan, but still get through and hit tanks hard.

On the ground troops overwhelm an IJA blockade and should push through in the next few days. These are the troops that were heading to Rashin which reversed and will now head toward Mutankiang. So far so good. More Japanese border forts to wipe out here! [8D]

Keep in mind that even if you swap the command of the Russian bases, you still can't base any non-Russian planes there. It goes off of country code, not base HQ.

I can if it's a captured base. Like Shikuka. Or Toyohara. Or Mishan. Or Koutou. Or Hailar. [:)]

So I need some US troops to get to these spots so I can haul up the stars and stripes and then, potentially, I could also bring in bombers, fighters, and whatever else I wanted to bring from anywhere. The Soviets have no transport planes though, only the Patrol boats, MBR-2. So the inland bases will require some other Allied transports to move troops too. I'll be flying some from Ledo through China once things are in place.

SUBS: The L-14 hits a fully loaded transport with two fish in the DEI. Nice.

DEI: P-38s sweep Djambi again and get another 10:1. Getting these planes here was the single best thing I've done in game so far. He can't sweep Singers and he can't defend Djambi. It's also led to the bombardments where a number of BBs took mine hits and to the now powerful defences of Singers being fully mobilised for a crossing, which seems imminent.

Troops have been showing a move icon from Johore Baru for a few days, and now our AV is up to just under 1400. Forts are at 4.45+. All commanders for major units have been changed, and some units have even been taking replacements and upgrades. Especially the one armor unit, getting some Marmon Harringtons in to boost it's effectiveness. Supply is just now dipping below 30k, so I need to find a way to get some more in soon, but have a few weeks still.

Two base forces and two AA units are 4-5 days out from Sabang, being held by one Dutch unit of 22 AV. I have also an Aussie Brigade about 10 days out to hold the base. Many ships holding supply are queueing in the IO beyond, waiting to see if the IJN DDs in the straits will be neutralised and what the air response will be.

I've also been sneaking supply into Java, building a few bases there with Brit engineers, and preparing to hit from both sides of Palembang. Troops are moving in from OZ toward Cocos and Christmas Islands to secure the LOC and keep the Japanese from getting them easily once they see what's happening here. Fingers crossed he thinks Sabang is an isolated move to move stuff to Singers.

PACIFIC: CVs keep on heading got the WC. No sign of the mini-KB today. The coast seems clear for a massive resupply heading to Dutch. After this I'll put feeling out in forward locations, then start planing to hit when spring comes.

SOVIETS: Two divisions that moved out of Mishan are a day late to hold the hex, as an IJA division also moves in. We launch a DA but it gets a 1:3 in the swamp hex. Time to sit and hope out other troops do seem good work on the trailing units.

Some units have crossed the river on the N rail line, and we're now a few days from completely surrounding Hailar, which I think still has a full division and support troops. I'll be moving in with force, as almost 2k AV including a full tank division enter the base form all sides simultaneously.

The DB-3T were set to launch at 8 hexes and found some IN BBs. On the day almost 40 launched fish, but not hits. Poorly trained TT pilots are to blame. All around 50 skill. So. Back to the rear to rebuild. Not many replacements though.
