obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A) (12/14/2019 11:00:34 AM)

April 10-11, 1943

Haha-Jima falls easily to the mass of Allied material that is landed on the 10th. The naval guard there was wiped out. I flew CAP in immediately to cover continued landing and some pickup for use elsewhere of the bigger ground troops.

Now the Chichi-Jima troops will load and concentrate in the Marianas before moving up.

Fusan falls to the forward tank army in Korea!! A lot of planes are destroyed on the ground, and that may be partially due to the sweeps, but also to the speed of the tanks. It looks like the attack caught Lowpe by surprise here. Some of those may be core groups that will have to be bought back.

Now is the part I've never attempted. I have troops prepped for several undisclosed destinations on the Home Islands. I'm down one CV, the Hornet, which is still a month from being in good combat shape, but I may have to bring her out with repairs unfinished.

An invasion of Japan is daunting at any time, but without APA/AKA, only a few LSD, and ver half the available BBs in the repair yards, this will not be easy to achieve. I have to keep the target secret until the last moment, and I have to see if I can get the KB to show itself before revealing my intentions.

It will help immensely that I'll now have airfields I orange of Kyushu for LR CAP, but I have some other plans too. [;)]

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A) (12/14/2019 11:11:37 AM)

April 12-13, 1943

A little bit of naval action on the 13th. The first in a while. The Japanese do try and pull troops, but Isn't in a CA/CL led TF which sunk a bunch of transports, then ran into CL Agano and one DD. The DD was sunk, but then later another four IJN DDs showed up, and one sent a long lance into DD CAssein, which also sank. A slight win for the Allies, but any destroyer loss now for Japan is dire. Not many left at all.

Troops are losing up all over the place. This will use all AP/AK ship, and I have a few which have converted to APA/AKA just arriving now to add in. About half of the ships involved will be slow unloading xAP and xAK though. Not ideal for an op that I think will have to be a one night only unload. We'll see.

April 14-15, 1943

Out on Okinawa I'm still working Nago down slowly. On the 14th the DA got only a 1:2 again, but it did cause some damage and most importantly dropped a fort to 2.

Only one more base to conquer on Korea! That was fast.

Now engineers are working hard at the inland airfields to bring them up to speed. I'll only use the coastal ones for fighters, moving them in and out to avoid bombardments.

I'm now caught up so you'll get it as it's happening. I was hoping Lowpe would have more time to update by this point, but it looks like he's still too busy. I do see some evidence of the IJN getting ready though, now that Kyushu is essentially surrounded by Allied bases.

He will have a lot of strike planes ready as there haven't been many big battles in a while, but I'll have to start culling Japanese air strength soon if I don't want a massacre. As usual speed and subterfuge will be the best Allied tools for this stage in the game.

Well, this isn't blitzkrieg, but I'm sure some of the digital sailors and aviators involved could use a few digital cross-tops. [;)]

The IJN sortie and head into the Tsushima area and up to Fusan. They take out a bunch of PT boats in the high waxing moonlight, but it's good intel on what's available and how he's setting them up. Not many DDs to go with the BBs now.

The islands to the SW of Kyushu are some of the preliminary targets to help support a later invasion. I'll be sending in the troops on the 17th to Tokaro Retto, the Southern most of these islands, which is size 2 and provokes a shock on landing. I've allocated two USA IDs to this op which is a bit of overkill, but they are only 35-50% prepped, so it'll potentially still be a challenge. Recon has a large base force with CD guns and a naval guard unit with several engineer units here. So it all depends on the fort levels and how much I can disrupt them with air strikes tomorrow. Here we go!

Could be. There are still some Japanese mines at Fusan, and not much else to defend it now, so I'm not putting anything there.

April 17, 1943

On the 17th the invasion of Tokara Retto goes smoothly with few losses and no air or naval strikes. I've had a lot of amphibious shipping around for the past few days so hopefully he has just assumed I was unloading at forward bases. Lowpe is pretty sharp though and has had recon on the three most forward bases near Kyushu, and so he must have noticed troop numbers there didn't increase.

I'll pull everything back for the 18th and prepare for another small island, Yakushima. Troops are loaded and waiting, but I want him to see the pattern I've used pretty routinely so far again, which is to land, then pull back for 2-5 days, and then move in to add more troops. This could be important to set up the next stage, although by the time I try to land on one of the main Home Islands I would think he'd have all defences on and ready to pounce.

In the air strikes against the troops were met by very little flak and no CAP.

In Korea the bases are fleshing out and I should have a level 7, a few level 5 and several level 3 bases to help with sweeps and LR CAP over Kyushu and South Honshu. There are a lot of possibilities now that Fusan is taken, swept for mines and I'll be moving in one CL led TF to guard the approach against bombardment. I also have some Soviet transports moving slowly along the coast, so far undetected, and some other TFs gathering at Moppo to shoot in and eventually load some of the 100k troops at Fusan.

Bif1961 -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A) (12/29/2019 5:02:37 PM)

I curious if your opponent has a reason why he doesn't combine the 48th and 52nd divisions back into the a whole division instead of leaving them broken down into the 3 Regts. My understanding is they fight much better when combined as a whole division then leaving them into their subordinate Regts. I understand they rebuild faster when left in regts in reserve mode but I doubt they are still doing that since they are under ground assault daily.

BBfanboy -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A) (12/29/2019 6:39:34 PM)

Could be a lack of PPs to put them under the same HQ, or differences in devices held.

There may be several reasons. He has done this a lot. Right now this may be a lesser concern for him as this base is essentially gone and those troops are POWs waiting to be captured. With forts to 0 it won't be too much longer.

Bif1961 -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A) (1/1/2020 3:39:12 PM)

The 48th Div component parts are all under the 14th Army and the 52nd Divisions starts under the eastern Army. Therefore he would have had to pay PPs in the past to move some of their subordinate units to another command not to be able to re-combine them or some of the elements have upgraded while others are not on the same upgrade.

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A) (1/3/2020 3:18:08 PM)

April 20, 1943

On the 20th plans move one step further. A large group of ships gathered at Yakushima and some landed troops there. Others covered, but the largest TFs steamed offshore in preparation for a further move. I’ve been unloading and pulling back during each of the recent island landings. The predictability served a good purpose to get enough troops onshore but protect the rest from next day counter strikes. It was also a tactic I had hoped Lowpe noticed and began to get used to.

Now these ships will not steam back to Amani Oshima tomorrow. This is the eve of the most important and most risky invasion I’ve yet attempted; landing on the shores of the Home Islands of Japan. The trepidation I’m feeling now is real. I’ve noticed his search is three hexes out from Nagasaki. Are all of the strikes set to launch, but restricted to close in actions?

The IJN has a large TF showing multiple BBs at Nagasaki. Will we have enough to force through the troops and land enough against the coastal forts to take a base?

So many unknowns. Such potential for devastating losses that could extend the game by many months if not over a year.

I have the entire combined Allied surface fleets here except for the single BB and ten DDs at Iwo Jima preparing to land at Chichi Jima. I’ve brought Hornet out of the dry dock with repairs only partially complete, and she has 16 float damage but can still make 27 knots, so she’ll take her place in the battle line. I have two groups of Hellcats, 75 planes, now flying with the USN. I’ll fly a defense only CAP as LBA will be too strong to hit the KB and potentially very dangerous in striking the incoming fleets.

Below is a shot of the invasion forces gathered at Yakushima. Onnly two TFs going in but over 100 ships. About another hundred in covering forces from this area and from the North moving in with the CVs from near Moppo.

Tomorrow is the day. Fingers crossed.

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A) (1/5/2020 4:32:45 PM)

D-Day began with some trepidation, but also some unexpected moves by the IJN.

The large TF at Nagasaki moved to Fusan and hit the TF I'd just raced in there before it could disband. Some very large transports were hit, but only a couple sunk, and this led to some very unexpected and positive results elsewhere, in more important areas. [;)]

[image]local://upfiles/37283/2C45498F8B8544CBA238F51ACD3B66DF.jpg[/image]

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A) (1/5/2020 7:46:04 PM)

This move by the IJN would usually make this a very bad day for the Allies. Instead, the unintended feint here of bringing in this TF meant nothing was guarding Nagasaki.

Before anything else though the USN strike planes went on another nighttime KB hunt. A lot of drops from DBs and TBs, plus some by Cats, but no hits. Their DL is high though and I just realised that with no mines at Shimonoseki I can send subs into the inland sea.

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A) (1/5/2020 7:50:42 PM)

The USN tangled with the IJN BBs before they left the Fusan area. Not a bad result, getting a few hits, and only one CL injured. It'll disband to get some work at Fusan.

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: Lowpe (J) vs obvert (A) (1/5/2020 8:13:11 PM)

The result of no defence at Nagasaki was this. I sent in two BB TFs to bombard and hopefully take out the IJN defenders as well as damaging the airfields. Instead, the BBs go in untouched and the airfields are decimated.
