Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/5/2017 1:06:26 AM)

I will bet you Prince of Wales got away, and the Repulse just went down...the Repulse was the BB ship making 1 hex a day progress.

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/5/2017 1:29:41 AM)

Repulse does look to be taken off the sunk ships list...

Tracker gave me +979 VP for the day, and lists Saratoga as sunk. 20 points for LCU, 100 points for plane losses, and slightly under 200 points for bases.

Always tough to get a handle on what actually sank, especially with Allied damage control.

In all of the surface combats, did the torpedoes not fire or were there misses?

And how far into the South Pacific are you planning to expand? I understand if you would rather keep this under wraps at this point.

Kiso, Tama and Oi still have torpedoes. Kitakami fired them all. I think every torpedo was fired on a destroyer...rather the cruisers and carriers (exception Leander).

Balikpapen can rearm up to 20cm shells, not torpedoes or 36 cm ammo plus of course fuel. Supply ships are headed in, just not here yet.

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/5/2017 2:49:58 PM)

Not far really...in the Pacific. I don't want to spend the fuel.[;)]

How were the leader's on your CLs? I know you picked a good TF leader, but maybe the Captain's were 'political appointments.' [:D]

That could be it, as I don't pick high aggression leaders as a general rule. They are good naval skills however.

Well, Lex is down for sure. Raleigh didn't go down or you'd see Seagulls on the lost on ground list. DD Helm sunk also - I've never seen a DD live from heavy/heavy in a combat zone. Van Nes down, Witte de With afloat. Phelps down. See? Easy peasy!

Also, you're on target with Repulse going down and PoW getting away.

What a bloody couple of battles. That's going to hurt him badly in the short and medium term, and sting you in the medium term.

ny59giants -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/5/2017 3:58:10 PM)

Japan never has enough DDs.

Bif1961 -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/5/2017 11:40:15 PM)

From the ground lost list of naval aircraft the Lexington did go down.

She is dead![:)] You are correct, and Lok is too (but then he always is).

Finished the turn....another day, another complete bloodbath will be coming.

Stay tuned, true believer! Plenty of kabooms ahead![sm=00000959.gif] Barge goodness, too!

There are a smattering of really terrible captains in the IJN OOB at the start of the game. Nowhere near as many as the Allies, but there are a few.

This I learned when one of my CA captains had a tendency to bounce his ship off a merchantman twice in the first week of the war.

Regarding captain aggression ratings, it's something I don't really consider. Provided it's 60+, and the other important stats (naval, leadership, inspiration) are high, they'll do. That seems to be the sweet spot of prosecuting an engagement enough that you can land some hits, but withdraw when things don't work out as planned.

The exceptions are the fights that are high stakes, or that you know you've a tactical advantage - in those cases I swap in one of the IJN admirals that communicate only by shouting - it's those battles that you want the advantage to be pressed to the fullest extent. This is the perfect example - BB on CV combat would merit a TF commander so aggressive he'd order the ships to close in so he could fire his pistol at the CV then lead a boarding party in the smoke.

Tanaka was my go-to guy for those kinds of engagements. I liked to imagine him standing on the bow directing the battle.

Trogilus -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/6/2017 1:55:36 AM)

I read this AAR from the beginning yesterday. Great day to choose, it turns out, because it had an awesome climax. You guys are really going at it early.

Tanaka and Mikawa are my go-to's, but the more I play the more I choose my spots for the aggressive SCTF admirals. When not restricted by reaction limits they have a tendency to chase low-value objectives too far, wasting ordinance and putting them out of position.

Cue sound effect of helium balloon inflating.

GetAssista -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/6/2017 8:31:33 AM)

Wow, that was quite a nialbiter. I would curse and cheer in my chair many times while watching that last turn

Also, what is the damage on Ryujo? Is there hope?

There is no hope, but I will try.

For Kitakami and Oi, I like the 2 70+ aggression, 65+ naval skill commanders available for the CLs. They press close, launch torpedos almost every time, and almost always score a hit. I like to use Kitakami and Oi in a heavy CA or fast BB TF, not independently, because the BBs or CAs seem to draw the heavier fire, allowing Kitakami and Oi to press in close, if the TF commander is sufficiently aggressive (60+) with 70+ naval skill.

Jan 5, 1942

Strap in for another bumpy ride! This one is sure be another bloodbath, but it starts off quietly enough with no blood drawn.

Off Balikpapen

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/6/2017 11:11:07 PM)

Right outside Balikpapen...not good for the night, as weather is clear, lots of ammunition being expended upon destroyers...

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/6/2017 11:15:10 PM)

Both sides had almost no ammunition, we land a nice hit damaging their crew...1 hex from Balikpapen

[image]local://upfiles/44178/92C625B071354D55AA69E5E71EDACA83.jpg[/image]

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/6/2017 11:18:25 PM)

This fight again was marked by very low ammunition on both sides...near to where I expect the Enterprise to be.

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/6/2017 11:20:10 PM)

More wasted ammo...Allies have broken their fleets down very small.

No damage done...

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/6/2017 11:23:35 PM)

Another short fight...outside of Balikpapen. Where is the E!

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/6/2017 11:25:07 PM)

I think they are making a run to the north...

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (5/6/2017 11:29:19 PM)

These light cruisers dodged a ton of torpedoes...amazing they still have ammo.

Caught, but not enough damage! Their is another Pagoda on the horizon...can they engage?
