A few more bombers go in, the Nells fly against Wake in the afternoon, and 7 Wildcats are flying CAP, but too high, thank goodness, or it could have been a bloodbath.

Paratroopers!

It does not always report damaged aircraft on airfield strikes in the Combat report. See my combat report on Pearl Dec. 7th. My report omitted damaged aircraft as well. They are damaged, though, I assure you.

B17s at 2000 feet...I guess that tells about all you need to know about how ruthlessly this war will be fought by the Allies.[:D]

Buckle down, JFB's, we are in for a heck of a ride!

1) I think its gamey. Not important what I think though. It's what you and Obvert think.
2) How many factories are you going to put into Tony to move up the 100 I by 2 years? That is a lot of R&D, and you will not even have 500 engines in the pool until fall 42, even with heavy Kawasaki R&D and production. By using much less Heavy Industry for R&D, you can have the 61D in early 43 and the Tony 1 in early 44. The only major differences between the 61D and the 100 I are 4 points of manuever and 1 service rating. All things are a tradeoff.

Oh... I just realized that the 100 uses the Mit 33. So I guess going for it directly is more efficient than I initially thought.

All feedback welcome, especially disagreeing feedback is often the most valuable.

I see you caught the engine change for the 100; that is why to go for it.

Drakanel -> RE: In blossom today, then scattered; Lowpe (J) vs Obvert (A) (3/17/2017 11:01:27 PM)

Hrm, not a bad first day. I wonder if some of those BBs at Pearl will sink. Maryland seems likely, the others... depends how damaged they really are.

Lowpe -> RE: In blossom today, then scattered; Lowpe (J) vs Obvert (A) (3/17/2017 11:05:36 PM)

Reorganization. Sigh. It seems the High Command neglected to spread the word we are about to get into a war with a huge Alliance!

Often overlooked. Could be some beneficial special missions in their use throughout the war. Especially lightly garrisoned airfields.

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (3/18/2017 1:46:58 AM)

I airlifted some of the 3rd Air Division into Patani to get some AV support there for the fighters.

A Babs unit start here, with a detachment over Saigon way. They already fly the Dinah, so I manually upgraded the Babs unit, and then flew the detachment to Patani and combined them.

Now I have a great recon unit, lacking pilots which I will fix shortly, that can hopefully avoid the CAP over Singers and give us some great reporting there.

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (3/18/2017 2:05:55 AM)

The crazy weird 4th Sentai. Starts in three splinters, 2 Nates and one Babs. It is restricted.

If you upgrade these guys to planes other than the Nick A, you will lose the ability to make a night fighter out of the unit. And that would severely weaken your night fighting capability since it is a very large squadron.

I upgraded the Babs section to Nates...will fly them all back to the HI, near Hokkaido will they will train pilots and act as an emergency CAP should the Allies want to visit.

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (3/18/2017 2:15:26 AM)

Places like this is where an unexpected B17 raid can really sting. I need to be super careful about all my ports till I manage to shut those B17s down. Even some Chinese bombers can hit here, so the threat is just not with the B17...they simply hit the hardest.

The 51st AA is providing some cover, but no way am I going to leave those ships in port.

Allied DL seemingly everywhere are really good. For that matter, Japan's is really good too. We need more time to get the DL back to 0 where the Allies have no recon.

Don't let those B-17s survive past Dec. 8th. That is my policy. In fact, destroy all 4 EB at every opportunity throughout the game.

Japanese Artillery - Do you send specific size guns/mortars to places like China, Burma, or Luzon? I will have plenty from Manchuria awaiting PP and wondered if find you need certain size guns at a particular place.

Absolutely. Check the TOE: anything 10cm and greater is great anti-tanks. Anything without motorized support and 75mm or 81mm mortars are great air mobile artillery for islands/resrves. Some of the rapid fire AT guns are pack...meaning they are air mobile too. Those AT guns are a godsend.

The really big guns are must haves at big city sieges in Luzon, Burma and China and anchors in the jungle rough. Without lots of decent artillery, Allied tanks will run right over you in Burma.

Lowpe -> RE: The Dutch are the first to Die! (3/18/2017 6:17:41 PM)

This could be a real punishing turn for Japan, especially if he continues the 2000 foot 4E bombing runs against ships.

I tried covering my bases and ships as well as I can.

That's the price Japan must pay for focusing on submarines and not the allied air force.

Historically, did the US ever use 4E bombers that low? Were the results worth it?

A couple of examples:

Dive Bombing a B-17 http://www.dba-oracle.com/dive_bombing_b_17.htm

Old 666 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_666

"In May, Zeamer and crew made a skip-bombing run on a Japanese aircraft carrier, swooping within fifty feet of its decks. A few days later on a daylight bombing raid over Rabaul, Old 666 came in so low it was brushing the roofs of the housetops."

"On a night mission over Wewak the Japanese gunners on the ground managed to fix the flight of incoming American bombers in the glare of several large searchlights, but, in an audacious display of airmanship, Zeamer dived on the positions, shooting out three lights and damaging two others."
