Here is the plan.

- The 4 healthy fleet carriers will be combined into 1 TF, freeing additional destroyers and cruisers for surface combat. The carriers will proceed to the hex between Maloelap and Wotje.

- The invasion of Maloelap will proceed, without the benefit of a separate naval bombardment.

- The surface forces will seek KB as indicated on the attached diagram.

- The Wotje invasion convoy will head SE to join the Roi-Namur convoys and the Air HQ's.

What do you think?

BBfanboy -> RE: 1943 April 10 (9/13/2019 3:24:44 AM)

So you intend to keep your four good CVs in range of KB? Not sure that is wise - you can afford to lose surface combat ships but not CVs. It didn't look like your strike hurt KB too badly.

I like the idea of throwing the kitchen sink at KB, if you have no indications that there are other SCTFs supporting it. The BB TF that took on your DDs near Taongi better be part of KB, and not an additional force. It is usually the IJN that surges SCTFs at Allied carriers.

That said, I don't know the overall picture well enough to say whether you should press to complete your invasions, suspend them for now or withdraw. That should tie in to whatever strategy you choose to take on or avoid KB.

witpqs -> RE: 1943 April 10 (9/13/2019 4:34:17 AM)

Here is a tally of hits on IJN carriers for the turn. Kaga and Zuiho are non-operational. Shoho is so small a single 1,000 lb bomb hit might have put it out of action, or not. Shokaku is non-operational if the fire is still burning, possible for an IJN carrier. Akagi is tough, possibly not operating aircraft but at least as likely to be doing so.

Undamaged:
Hiryu
Soryu
Taiho
Zuikaku
Ryujo
Possibly operational:
Shoho
Shokaku
Akagi

We can operate:

Lexington
Saratoga
Wasp
Enterprise (damaged but operational)
CVE Sangamon (damaged but operational)
CVE Suwannee
CVE Prince William (damaged but operational)

The IJN is known to have (seen in combat this turn)
4x BB
8x CA
2x CL

Subs are done. Will get to surface forces later when I have time.

Bif1961 -> RE: 1943 April 10 (9/14/2019 1:36:40 AM)

It looks like the KB has carriers operational, according to your estimation, 500 carrier aircraft worth of carrier capability. You have, by your estimate, you have less than 450 carrier aircraft worth of carrier space. Of course because of the attrition of the first days battles it is difficult to say with certainty how much he may have actually. He had BBs embedded with his KB that took a few hits, do you know how many additional BBs he has in the area? Since you are operating closer to his major bases than your own he may be able to use land based naval air craft and tip the balance of air power even more in his favor.

I really don't have any solid idea of battleships beyond those 4. A total of 5 show up on TF scouting mouse-overs, but you know how unreliable those are.

The same mouse-overs show this for the 4 IJN task forces in that hex.
F - B - A (which I presume includes float planes.)
31 - 31 - 4
46 - 33 - 5
0 - 0 - 7
103 - 139 - 7
==============
180 - 203 - 16

I make that 383 fighters and strike aircraft plus a handful of float planes.

My operational carriers, both CVE and fleet, tally 414 fighter and strike aircraft.

witpqs -> RE: 1943 April 10 (9/14/2019 5:15:13 AM)

Maloelap shows 19 fighters and 26 bombers. I could detail a couple of heavy cruisers to bombard.

I have a feeling those were re-directs from damaged carriers, no aircraft are showing up at Wotje or Roi-Namur.

zuluhour -> RE: 1943 April 10 (9/14/2019 9:55:21 AM)

I would keep the CVs two to a TF for coordination and protection. It is of course opinion on my part but I
would not like a strike by KB which can concentrate so well to hit one TF with all the US CVs in it. I
also think you could suffer coordination issues at this juncture in the war with four to a TF. Two cents.

I am digging the rout in Burma. Flak be damned. Go in low and bust him.
Where are your General Lees allocated? In Burma as well?
Do you have base forces forward in Burma? Corp COs?

Well, they really hit all ships in a hex now so I would have to split the carriers into 2 different hexes to thwart a massed strike in that way. But then I would lose the services of a good many fighters on CAP.

Coordination - yeah. Would I really benefit from two separate TF's, though? Are you thinking I could get two coordinated strikes (from two fleet CV each strike) as opposed to a greater number of penny packets?

Yes. Lots of tanks, and they will be making a massed assault at Taung Gyi if I ever get this turn away. One big tank unit left in India for counter-invasion security, plus some smaller armored units, but by far most of the armor is in Burma
quote:

NCAC Army HQ is marching through the jungle now. IV Indian Corps HQ is at Meiktila so will aid the assault on Taung Gyi (albeit without prep).

zuluhour -> RE: 1943 April 10 (9/14/2019 11:11:19 AM)

all ships in a hex? are you sure on that one? I seem to remember it differently. I thought the strike
"packet" would select a specific TF.

* I blame it on the age factor.

You are correct, before it was changed. I don't remember when it was changed but certainly a long time. As usual, the algorithm was not released AFAIK. Can't say how heavily one TF gets favored (or even if so).

witpqs -> RE: 1943 April 10 (9/15/2019 3:00:36 PM)

Have time to (hopefully) finish the turn now. The Lex/Sara/Wasp TF must have taken no air strikes at all because AAA ammo is 100%.

I was going to go with 2x fleet CV TF as recommended but no I'm having second thoughts about that; going with 1x TF will give them all much better AAA protection.

witpqs -> RE: 1943 April 10 (9/15/2019 3:44:03 PM)

Here are the damaged carriers which are retiring, toward Baker Island.

One CVE sank.

Enterprise and all three remaining CVE are also damaged but operational.

witpqs -> RE: 1943 April 10 (9/15/2019 3:46:07 PM)

Here are the assignments for the surface combat TF's. Unfortunately the "6" hot key doesn't display the return legs or the travel to the patrol zone, but this should give you the idea.

Straight up the middle will go the fast BB TF, a CL TF, and the remaining CL & DD TF with former Yorktown's escorts. To the right and curving in the 22 knot old BB TF, and a CA TF. To the left the 21 knot old BB TF (16 inch guns), a CA TF.

Destroyers are also going straight up the middle. In addition, various destroyers (especially those already away from the fleet) wll move in from the KB's flanks and rear to impede its movement.

• Urumchi will soon be our last base in China. Enemy units are seen moving west from Paoshan, I'm guessing the armored division will speed into Burma so we can destroy it.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• Deliberate assault at Taung Gyi tomorrow.

• Movement NW out of Toungoo. I presume it's the armored division there moving to intercept our infantry division which has been heading toward the IJN defensive position in the jungle just NW of Toungoo. Our division will dig in instead and reinforcements will join them. The trail NW from Toungoo is a railroad bed, pretty slow for armor. My plan was to attack through the road west of Toungoo toward Prome. Now I will give the Imperial armor time to redeploy to that road, out of Toungoo, then send the main effort into Toungoo from the NE (the mass of force now focusing on Taung Gyi).

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

Here are the damaged carriers which are retiring, toward Baker Island.

One CVE sank.

Enterprise and all three remaining CVE are also damaged but operational.

Thats the most naval action over a week in '43 Ive ever seen. It's hard to get a handle on from afar. Not seeing
any fires on his flat tops when the last big strike arrived over him makes me think he could hang around for
some more and if he's aggressive, persue you to destiny. His naval air groups have to be significantly reduced
but I would would have to make this a battle of reckoning if was IJN. I'm a bit white knuckled watching.

witpqs -> RE: 1943 April 12 (9/29/2019 12:57:02 PM)

Um, well, ah, yeah. [:D]

witpqs -> RE: 1943 April 12 (9/29/2019 2:47:51 PM)

Walter just got back from India, so I'm not certain if he'll get to the turn today or if he'll be laid up with hyper-sonic jet lag due to the Coriolis effect. So a little more color.

I did miss changing orders to one DD TF and one CA TF, so I guess they will form a floating reserve for next turn.

By and large we have some destroyers and cruisers moving to intercept the enemy carriers, which include their cripples as far as I can tell. Our carriers and transports are heading east, with attack planes switched to naval search to aid in submarine evasion. The fast battleships and undamaged old BB groups will meet up with the operational fleet carriers. The damaged old BB's, which engaged IJN crippled carriers overnight, will attempt to escape northeast.

Lexington is unlikely to escape due to her low speed. The carriers damaged the previous day are, miraculously, all un-spotted and will continue limping away to the southeast.

We have lots of subs moving on the enemy carriers. Keep your fingers crossed.
