• It looks like carriers 2 hexes west of Mergui, and cruisers 4 hexes NW of Port Blair. The merchants will head back to Calcutta and Chittagong. The warships will head for Chittagong until we see what carrier forces the Empire is bringing. In spite of today's beating over Akyab we have significant fighter resources deployed. The P-51A might make it's combat debut over Chittagong.

1943 October 02

Big sweeps by the Empire over Akyab. We are reinforcing with several squadrons of Hurricanes. The 4EB will hit Toungoo, the base of origin, while 100x P-38H, 47x F4u-1, and 25 P-47D2 sweep same. Toungoo has a size 2 airfield with 138 fighters - over stacked.

I dislike how sooo many resources get allocated to the Burma region. I see and know why it happens, but still don't like it.

Me too.

I just haven't had the resources to go around yet, but that's still the plan. Target: Sabang. Lots of LCU's prepared. I know it will be unlikely to be a breakthrough, but it will tie him down more in a different spot and maybe allow other things.

BTW, British Infantry squads absolutely will not upgrade to '43 squads. I've looked at the CSV dumps of the scenario files and haven't found anything wrong. And I am talking with plenty of squads, in places with plenty of supply in India, for example. I'm to the point of wondering if there is some sort of corruption in the scenario binaries and maybe we need to dump them to CSV and re-load them.

Any ideas?

What date does the Editor say the 1943 squads are available? It doesn't always happen on January 1.

Go into the editor and manually change them gradually? Would take some trust and honesty.

Forget at this moment but they have been accumulating for many, many months. Some units have arrived with them. Just the '42 squads won't upgrade, in spite of the upgrade path appearing to be correct.

We have that, but I don't want to take too much (technical) risk. Plus I don't know how I would change a unit on the fly like that.

We do have some misc corrections to make, like ship upgrades, that might take effect mid-game. Doing that would require the whole scenario to be uploaded and maybe over-write any binary glitch. Haven't devoted time to making those fixes yet.

• There are cruisers 5 hexes west of Prome, and an unidentified force 2 hexes NW of Port Blair. Our cruisers, based at Chittagong, will run a night patrol just past Cox's Bazar then be back at Chittagong by daylight.

We have specialist LBA set for Naval Attack plus a B-17 group (mixed E and F) with NavB training which has been set to Naval Attack for a long time, and to these we add the rest of the 4EB (but without NavB training) in the hope of overwhelming defenses. That move alse frees our sweepers, the best fighters/pilots combos in theater, to fly CAP and escort for naval strike missions.

Forget at this moment but they have been accumulating for many, many months. Some units have arrived with them. Just the '42 squads won't upgrade, in spite of the upgrade path appearing to be correct.

Have you put the units in rest mode so that their TOE changes to the one with '43 squads?

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• A sub has set up a patrol zone west of Johnston Island, so our DD ASW group is doing likewise.

1943 October 06

INVADED
Invested: Taung Gyi.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• 3 carriers identified in the Bay of Bengal, but I think it likely more are there based on the number of fighters present.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• They are much farther from home than used to be the case.

Pacific

• Majuro invasion convoy has loaded all troops and is loading supplies.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• The Horn Island invasion force will leave Cooktown tonight.

Philippines

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• Lots of action in the air over the Bay of Bengal, perhaps slightly favoring us. Weather was atrocious, and if it were better we might have fared worse with more attacks making our fighters vulnerable as escorts. Ships identified were:
quote:

BB Hiei
BB Kirishima
BB Nagato
CA Nachi
CL Naka
CV Taiho
CVL Shoho
CVL Zuiho

• We've reduced ranges on all fighters and naval attack aircraft to 3, except for the 4EB which are more flying as harassment and obfuscation. There still might be additional carrier TF's coming up.

• The RN cruiser and destroyer upgrades have completed so we have 2x CA, 2x CL, 1x CLAA, and 11x DD in addition to the two slow battleships and Hermes. BC Repulse has 24 days more to complete her upgrade at Colombo. A TF with 2x CA and 7x DD will head for Colombo.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• No action. IJN ASW forces moved back down the coast while their carriers and battleships moved west and are 6 hexes south of Cocanada.

• Some of our merchants are in harbor at Calcutta guarded by flak and fighters; others are in convoys at Chittagong guarded by fighters and warships. They can't put to sea to bring supply to Akyab, but at least the IJN carriers are themselves at sea incurring risk, accumulating wear and tear, and burning fuel.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
