CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Allied forces CAPTURE Deboyne Islands !!!

Overall

• No Intel on enemy carriers.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• The Marcus invasion forces are beginning to load at Pearl Harbor and (tomorrow) at Lahaina.

Pacific

• The Wake invasion forces continue moving. Due to the number of guns seen on Wake by recon we will bombard will all the old battleships available, then they will resupply for the Marcus invasion. The Marcus invasion forces will be available right away so the rearming of the old BB's will be the time limiting factor.

• There is another small task force or convoy heading into Truk; we will attempt to intercept it with surface forces but they will only be able to get there when it is on the way out.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• Two more.

• Although we did take a bite out of them, the Empire seems to have scored around 2 to 1 with their sweeps today. Our 4EB force is still building up amidst B-24J upgrades, so rather than strike back we are adjusting altitudes for the better fighters to 20,000 ft from the 10,000 ft which was designed to facilitate escort for anti-ship missions. The slower fighters will remain low and might serve to bait the sweepers to lower altitudes.

We just got naval search over this area. Have they been there, waiting to pounce on any hapless Darwin supply convoy, or did they just get there in response to our capture of Horn Island?

Japan always runs out of destroyers.[:(] Scratch the Yamato and give me 20 more destroyers. Throw in 40mm bofors.

He probably should have 6 3 point ASW PBs at least. That task force is dead man walking.

My guess would be they are providing CAP for the oil. I like to do this all the time as Japan, use carriers to provide cap, leave the base empty of fighters, and hope to draw in a bomber strike without escorts. Or simply to add fighter protection to a smaller base that might be out of supplies or easily have its runways bombed.

Well, you have to admit that they can really do ASW! I got to toying with my game, trying to see if I could pair a CVE with PB and still run flight operations. But they are incompatible. Which is a shame, because I would have done it. E boats work though. I did put Eboats along with a CVE into an Escort Carrier TF, and the Escort Carrier was promptly torpedoed by a sub I recall. Never did it again, since the Escort Carrier TF provides no ASW benefits.

Are you getting any sig intel from that concentration?

witpqs -> RE: 1943 October 23 (5/17/2020 1:41:01 AM)

No, no SigInt from that plug of ships.

Why no ASW benefit from a CVE? You should be able to run search and/or ASW far from bases.

You should be able to. You can put fleet carriers in an escort TF with ships that can't go into a Carrier TF and still perform all missions.

I'm not seeing your 20 subs in that map...

Nope, they are at about Townsville. As the multi-sub TF's hit the Torres Strait area I will split them out into singltons.

If that lot are headed for Torres Strait they will get there before your subs. Do you have any bait to dangle at Darwin to keep them on that side of the strait for a couple of days?

No, none at all.

But if they are intent on going through the Torres Strait I figure the mass of 20 and 21 knot subs would be meeting them before they got clear of all the reefs, say, before they get to Port Moresby.

Carrier Escort task forces are an aid for the AI to properly use escort carriers. They provide no benefits to ASW work over a regular Air Task Force.
