Not sure if Mundy has mentioned in his AAR but our game is in a short period of inactivity due to my ending up in hospital last Saturday. I fell ill after work last Thursday and in little time I was running 40 degree temps and becoming badly dehydrated until my wife, the ambulance and a fine body of medical people and their support staff stepped in to intervene. Turns out I picked up a prostate infection and was well crook for a few days. Still in hospital but all is looking good for a release by Friday and then perhaps a return to the fray.

So far, I have paid it scant attention apart from the usual fixation with Hong Kong and some tentative thoughts on Wenchow. Hong Kong fell quickly and has freed up plenty of artillery and an independent division for the Philippines and Singapore. Wenchow appears to have been vacated with only a single administrative unit being identified during bombing runs over the last couple of days. I’m inclined to send in a parachute unit on the next turn and see if I can take it on the cheap although this may not be too cool an idea as I think Wenchow has forts around level 4. Even an administrative unit could be difficult to winkle out behind forts of that size. Perhaps do some bombardments and then send in a seaborne invasion plus the parachutes and see how that goes. Most assets are in place to do so and could be pulled together within a few days. I want the land troops to come from Samah and there are some nasty looking small MTB craft hanging around Hong Kong. They will have to be dealt with before my soldiers make the run from Samah to Wenchow. Those B-17s are making a right royal pain of themselves. None of the ships which were struck by bombs has succumbed and all fires are out. They will come back to the fold in time if I can deter the big bombers. There will be fighters to meet them should they return. Chiyoda has started the process of increasing the size of the Home Island based float plane groups, so I can get my search pilot training up and away.

At the very least they put their bomb aim off and caused some damage. 2 pilots are now showing as having a kill each so perhaps a couple of the big machines never made it home. After moving one of the Air HQ at Takao I forgot to reload the other Air HQs with torpedoes. Hence the very abysmal results where Betty was using bombs instead of torpedoes. The Tawi Tawi result was so unexpected. I knew that shipping from Manila was on the move. Half of KB was near Babeldaob and made a speed run to get into position to sink some merchant shipping. My complacency was shattered when Repulse and Prince of Wales popped up in the target hairs. Reasonable results and I think the weather had a lot to do with these 2 ships and company still being above the water. I’ve rolled the dice with the half KB staying in the area to try and finish something off if they are running slow. Cruisers are racing up from Babeldaob to help and the Straits of Makassar have a healthy showing of Japanese submarines waiting for injured warships. A fast developing situation at Eniwetok. That TF that has turned up at Eniwetok is reported doing 33 knots and it did move 13 hexes last turn. KB East is ready to pull the trigger. The Kako cruiser group is on the way from Truk. Nells are poised to launch although failed to do so last turn. Most troubling is the radio intercept to the south. I fear USN CVs maybe in the area. Not good news for Kaga and company if this is so. So it appears that Ed is making a dash at capturing undefended Eniwetok. If so I hope this will be a short lived endeavour. The hospital experience was most unexpected and I am so grateful for a superb medical team and that includes nurses, cleaners the lot. As for those Marshall Island DDs they are a nuisance and difficult to pin down. Probably due to their speed. I'm leery of chasing them towards PH just in case USN carriers are in residence. I'm thinking of countering them by employing my own mines and a couple of midget subs at the bases they seem interested in visiting. The eastern KB has had no luck in sending a bombing group their way and I want them back at Truk to replenish and then cover the Rabaul landings.

So, with 1941 consigned to the pages of history what have I learned. Ed is shaping up to be a dogged Allied opponent. His submarine arm is going to haunt me all game. He is flooding the obvious choke points and anywhere that appears to have a concentration of Japanese warships. The Dutch subs are getting results and even the maligned early war USN subs get the occasional result. I am already feeling the pinch in supplying escorts for convoys. The straits between the Philippines and Formosa are a favourite. I have finally got some Lilly bombers in to do ASW work in this area. Their ASW levels are low of course but something in the air is better than nothing. As for my boats I’m fairly happy with their early return and super happy that they have accounted for Repulse and Indianapolis. Maintaining the flow of resources into the Home Islands is going to be a job. I’ve already lagged in this area resulting in Heavy and Light Industry failures in Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka. LST alluded to this in his game notes and he is so correct. Imperial Japan must utilize a lot of the merchant fleet to haul resources back to the hungry Honshu. The damaged ships from the beginning feature (one that I like and endorse) puts the IJN under considerable strain. The offensive ops I will soon deal with have been awaiting repairs to the all the carriers. Cruisers have been sorely tested with a couple at least needing to visit a big repair yard to deal with major damage that has accumulated. Chasing down the Manila migration is fun but with ships already sporting various levels of damage it soon becomes a recipe for further significant damage to accrue. China is a slow go area for the time being (maybe even the whole war). Hong Kong fell quickly but the issue of a garrison in most every captured hex will frustrate the IJ ability to cobble together large-scale assaults. I am already suffering VP loses due to insufficient garrisons in some areas. My first foray into a campaign will be the attempt to capture Yenan. The land war was an immediate Sir Robin. Almost everything on Luzon has retreated to Bataan/Corregidor and the siege there will shortly commence. Clark Field and Manila both not contested. When all the IJ land forces come together there will be 4 Divisions (4,16,21 and 48) supported by 65 Brigade, 3 Tank Regiments, 14th Army HQ and at least 9 artillery units. Battleships, Hyuga, Ise, Yamashiro and Fuso will continue with sea based bombardments if the minefields are not stumbled into again. I expect to move along quickly here once Allied supplies become depleted. 36 Allied land combat units reported at Bataan Corregidor. Malaya is a similar story with most all land units beating a retreat to Singapore. Reports here suggest that 43 Allied land combat units are holed up along with 108 ships in port and an aerial presence of 72 fighters and 124 bombers. Forts are no doubt climbing as I am yet to commence aerial bombing to chip away at supply. Those fighters are going to have to be dealt with first. IJ land forces moving towards assaulting the causeway are 6 Divisions (Imperial Guard, 2,5,18,38 and 56) supported by Southern Army HQ, 25th Army HQ, 3 Tank Regiments, 6 artillery units and 3 engineer regiments. My concern in this region is Java and Palembang. I certainly do fear that Ed has been pushing units into Palembang and if so this will cause considerable angst. Invasion TFs will soon be heading towards Sumatra/Java and we will soon have an appreciation of the state of play around Palembang. KB DEI (Akagi, Zuikaku, Shokaku, Zuiho and Ryujo) will provide aerial support (and play chicken with Dutch subs). New Britain is also about to come under attack with Kavieng and shortly thereafter Rabaul is targeted. KB PAC (Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu) will provide aerial cover with surface cover being attended to by Nagato and Mutsu. Further forces are on the way for invasions of Lae and Buna followed by a drive upon Kokoda. The air war to date has been rather quiet but I suspect it will soon heat up in quick order.
