I was hopeful of avoiding the minefield as it was relatively known with a BB stumbling into it and those sadly missed DMS managed to clear a number before the inevitable thrashing from the CDs. 2 DMS and a DD is plenty too much the price to pay. The German ship Osorno sends out a distress signal clearly indicating under attack by USN carrier aircraft as she transited to the south west of the Marshall Islands. To further complicate matters a sighting report of a mixed force of 10 US ships heading north east through the Marshall Islands has been received. Clearly there is at least 1 US carrier in the area, but could all the US carriers be present. By now they could all be together in the one place. If they are in the Marshalls they must be on a raid and if so which direction will they head in now. Allied recon planes had also been located snooping on Nagumo’s carrier force (detection level 4/4). Poor Nagumo. What to do. Play safe and head back towards Truk in case a raid is headed that way or adopt an aggressive posture and go looking for trouble…. With just his 3 carriers (Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu). Why all those partisan attacks? Don't you leave garrisons in place? There are a lot of small company and bataillon-sized units to cover places. And you get units like the Kempeitei in due time to relieve combat units from garrison duty. Hanoi for example has ample garrison in form of the 21st brigade - don't move it out before having moved-in a replament unit of the required size. That's part of the slow-down intended.

So many options here on what the American TF might do. Could even raid as far as Truk or even hunt my carriers or blast Kwajalein and then withdraw. I’ve decided to place the 3 carriers of KB PAC a couple of hexes west of Truk just in case a raid is in store for Truk and hopefully far enough away should the Americans come looking for a reduced KB. Truk harbour has been drained of shipping. As for the Marshalls. All search aircraft are looking in hopefully the correct directions. All submarines at Kwajalein have sortied. And the Nell group in the area are set 100% for naval attack at 100. I expect that if they find a carrier the CAP will chew them up. Hopefully CAP is set high and we might get a jump on them and get some Nells through to the target. Once again, the die is cast. Ed is very prompt with his returns so not long to wait and watch.

It seems that this is a USN CV raid of the Marshall Islands. Search planes report masses of battleships but I know CVs are there. An Alf search plane was shot down by CAP and a little AMc at Wotje suffered a fatal 500lb bomb strike… no doubt from a searching dive bomber. Fortunately not much shipping here and I’m hoping this TF will continue its easterly bearing towards Pearl. The Nells didn’t fly. Perhaps next turn they might give it a go. Subs just couldn’t quite get into position quickly enough. In the meantime, KB PAC will continue covering operations with Rabaul next up. One of the down sides of jumping straight into the game without much in the way of troubling myself with working out just how I am going to deal with partisans/garrisons. Kempeitei units are being shipped out for garrison duty as they turn up in the Home Islands. Taking note to of the small company sized units turning up - so hard to bite the bullet and consider using them for garrison duty when some of them have 80+ experience. Thanks for the 21st Brigade tip. I'll check it out. And I am most certainly feeling the slow down in China. I think you are on a winner here with all of those dot bases that have to have those pesky admin forces dealt with and then of course there is the garrison issue. Enjoying the game very much.

Quite the shortcoming from the Japanese side of things I am afraid. I noted her presence the turn before and it did cross my mind as to how does one tell the guys at the pointy end to do the right thing by those ships with the big crosses on them. You are quite right... she was sailing in the war zone and well those bomber pilots might not get a good look at markings on ships before they release their weapon. Does remind me of the sinking of Centaur off my own home town port of Brisbane. A hugely controversial sinking by Japanese submarine during the war. I'll take it that Mundy is using the Hospital ships as you designed. It took me a little while to knock it into my own head that these ships must marry up with their own specific land unit but I think I have this aspect of the game under control.

The poor bombing effort over Singapore will surely haunt me when the causeway is crossed. I'm somewhat mystified as to the lack of CAP of late. Guess I shall return to bombing even though it is from a high altitude. Seems the CAP may be reluctant to come and meet my sweeps. Then again perhaps AVG has turned up and is just waiting for those bombers to show up. Thank goodness those ChiCom Divisions are static. Dare I wonder where the other 2 are hidden. Clever communists to go and read the terms of the deal very carefully. I am thinking that if I can deal with these uber Divisions now they are not going to become even mightier than they would do if they are left alone.

So, I am at a point in proceedings where if I didn’t admit to a growing sense of trepidation I would be selling you a badly skewed portrait of where I am at. Good results, to date, aside I’ve had a feeling being behind the pace of the game most of the time. By that I mean that Ed has been adroit in orchestrating his Sir Robin. I, on the other hand, seem to be one or two steps behind cleaning up bases well after he has long cleared out. I’ve not capitalized on his clear out (for instance not utilizing parachute troops to speed up the advance in Malaya) and know full well that my advance, whilst methodical, has allowed him time to get busy behind the scenes and build up defences. Singapore, for instance, is no doubt well entrenched behind forts and we shall soon find out in the next week or so just how big the forts are. The bombing of Singapore has been sporadic and when I have done so it has been from high altitude. I am wary of the flak in this version of the game and even at the grand height of 18000 ft bombers are still lost to flak. More pressing though is the situation in the DEI. To date I have not been able to get recon on one very important target. I have had a felling that Ed was most likely busy in pouring troops into Palembang. Recon has finally produced a report on troop numbers at Palembang – 16 units. My fears are well founded. What to do. At present I have Sasebo 3rd SNLF and II and III/124th Infantry Battalions prepping and enroute or about to board and sail for Oosthaven. No doubt there will be mines and submarines and all sorts of aerial obstacles for this obvious entry route to Sumatra. First things first, get a foothold on Sumatra. At the same time, I have 14th Division (bought out from Manchukuo and prepping for Soerabaja) enroute for a Java invasion. If as I think Ed has moved most Dutch units to Palembang the job of subduing Java should be a lot easier. We shall soon see. Perhaps Ed has siphoned off units from Oz and India to bolster the DEI. I am somewhat sceptical that he has done this given the size of the stack at Moulmein. It is a big one and the units there have had to come from somewhere. More on that in the next post. The tempo in the DEI is about to hot up. Palembang is going to be difficult and the prospect of ruined oil reserves looms large. Burma is shaping up an early area of contest. Last turn Ed threw Flying Forts and Liberators into the fray with a bombing attack on Tavoy. I have a sentai of Oscar at Chiang Mai but they did not fly last turn for a sweep of Rangoon. Very keen to get to recon units looking at Rangoon to see just what is holding the fort in that location. Not sure yet just what that stack at Moulmein consists of but it certainly does appear that it is in the process of crossing the river and moving back to Martaban. For my part I have 33rd Division, 14th Infantry Regiment and 1/143rd Infantry Battalion hot footing it from Chiang Mai towards Papun (the hex behind Martaban). 1/143rd Battalion is in the lead having covered 32 of the 46 miles towards the destination. I am hoping that the ferry crossing across the river will slow up the Moulmein stack but I think it is likely that the Allied stack is better positioned to get to Pegu before I can do so. It is an interesting race. I am taking the fact that Ed put together a big stack at Moulmein and appears to have made the decision to move it as a good sign. Hopefully there is not much behind it and all efforts at fort preparation where directed to Moulmein and not elsewhere in the Burma sector. After jumping into this mod with negligible study China presented itself as quite the conundrum. I have been tentative in my approach but have been slowly working towards getting activity underway. In the southern part of China (map wise) Wenchow was gifted to the Japanese. It took me a while to appreciate that it was in fact controlled by a lonely administration unit, but I did pick it up eventually. Resources are (1) x 59, Heavy Industry (1) x 10 and Light Industry (1) x 79. As it has no overland access to the rest of China resources are hard to come by for industry causing the occasional industry failure. I am going to have to knock over one of those blocking administration units and open a land route to encourage more resources to feed their way into Wenchow. To the north of Wenchow the IJA has busied itself with forging a route west from Zhuji. The route has a rail line which cannot be used for strategic travel until all the ports are built to their SPS. A start has been made here at the first hex of Yushan/Chuhou (.50 on the way to level 1 of 3). Ultimately the target on this axis is Dongxiang which has recently had aerial bombardments commence. 15 units are known to be here in a town on a clear hex. Moving westward the base of Kukong has been vacated after it was subjected to aerial bombardment. If it stays unguarded I will grab it as a buffer in a wooded hex. To the south of Kukong a land route was cleared so that the scattered components of 51st Division can come together and reform. As for the dotted line heading north from Canton. I am considering the possibility of making a move on and taking Kweilin. In doing so I am wondering about the value of bypassing Wuchow (6 units) and leaving it for a later time. May have to await the results of recon on Kweilin before I make any hard and fast decisions. As it is most of the units in Canton are prepping for Kukong so they need a new target quickly and Kweilin is my preference at present. 19 January 1942 HOME ISLANDS SS Bonita launches 2 torpedoes at xAK Yamazato Maru at 111,61 near Hamamatsu and misses. SS Bonita then turns her attention to xAK Nitiran Maru in the same location. In a wild surface encounter, I loose count of the number of launched torpedoes which the fully laden cargo ship manages to avoid. Things looked grim until the Maru lands a hit on the submarine bringing an end to the action as the American Captain decides to break off. Expecting to find Nitiran on the sunk ships list at the end of the day I find no mention. After some hunting around I find at Nagoya burning ferociously with damage of 51 58(43) 14(01) 59. Did I mention she is burning ferociously! Those inhabitants of Nagoya with reason to be near the harbour cannot but help watching on transfixed by the sight of epic efforts to quell the inferno. They continue to watch as the drama drags on into the deepening darkness of night.
