Here's what's going on in the north right now. I'm fignting to hold onto what I have
already. Some parts of the front are stable and static and some parts are fluid and
dynamic and some of them are in question still. The supply situation is adequate for
our operational needs but only just.

This is a view of Kiev right now. I've compressed the Kiev defenders into a single
line and I'm letting my arty rest because it's combat phase three and they have been
firing for the past couple of turns and they are just about out of ammo. The Axis
units on the east side of the river are busy reducing infestations of Soviet units
along the riverbank and clearing crossings and pressing south.

Here's a quick peek at some of the losses so far:

Here's what's happening around the Bryansk area right now. I'm used to seeing
supply numbers in the teens but in this area it's down to 3 and 4 for a high.
That's not high enough to keep the war going and I'm going to have to put these
troops on bed rest for a while.

EDIT: Well, maybe not bed rest but some kind of training. And classes on various
topics. How to field strip your weapon, terrain navigation, small unit tactics,
and especially mess kit repair. Something to keep the troops busy because if they
are busy they probably won't notice that nobody ordered the winter clothes and over
coats and woolen socks.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/7/2018 1:03:49 PM)

The middle group of RR engrs, three units in total, is only just now leaving the
Minsk area so the railhead isn't particularly close to the troops and that's why
they don't have any beans, bullets, and bandaids. The railheads for the southern
group hasn't made it up to Kiev yet. This is going to be a long war.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/7/2018 1:07:55 PM)

Here's the railheads around the Kiev area. They started getting close to Kiev so I
split them up and they manage to repir about one rail every other turn.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/7/2018 1:15:34 PM)

There's a special formation that has a lot of PJ's in it. As you can see they are
tired and need some rest. I've been using them as recon and to complete a surround
on some Soviet units as the last thing before the attack. They wouldn't last long
in the front lines. I like to park them opposite the Soviet armor units too as a
second unit in the hex. Other than that they are pretty useless.

The Fuhrer orders are otherwise " Capture Bryansk and I will give you supplies for the sector but no winter clothes"
Remember Bryansk is a temporary supply depot

You are doing well, I did not capture Bryansk until after the mud phase had ended.

I don't have it yet but I'm optimistic that I can eventually capture the city. I'll
have to bring in some more people but it's worth the effort. According to the image
it looks like the city is empty but that's just FOW and I'm pretty sure there's some-
body there, probably a couple of units. My theater recon is too poor to see more than
what we're seeing, something like 5% or so. So my recon units have been busy out front
looking around. Sometimes I can't get a rescue unit out to the cornered recon units
right away and they have to defend themselves. That eats up the supply they have and
cuts their movement points short. In other words cripples it's mission, which is to be
out there looking around for Soviet units. They need to be a unit that can usually
defend itself but for the most part I've been able to get a division into the hex along
with the threatened recon unit and it works out alright. The problem is that I'm running
into areas where the supply level has dropped out entirely.

I forgot all about that. That's good news. I'll redouble my efforts to gain the
city. I need the supplies badly. Not to mention that I'm behind schedule very
badly. I've had horrible luck getting the rail repaired up to here and the war
depends on logistics more then any other thing so when the logistics fails the war
gets put on hold.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/7/2018 10:41:27 PM)

It turns out that there were three Soviet units sitting at Bryansk. I finally
realized that I could drive a unit up adjacent and take a look around. The only way
to get a list of everything in the hex is to do a probe attack and the combat results
will give me such a list, although I'd incur losses for that list. I'm not sure I need
such a list yet.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/8/2018 5:04:17 AM)

Here's the supply situation NE of Kiev right now. It's almost adequate but not quite.
But the effort is going on despite having to go in slow motion, having to save up the
supply needed to move or attack. There's a line of troops, divisions, moving north on
the west side of the river. They are moving to the east side of the river and will
arrive in about five turns or so.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/8/2018 5:20:59 AM)

Here's what's going on around Smolensk right now. I'm pressing fairly hard and there's
lots of scheduled attacks pending so this promises to be an exciting turn. Progress is
still being made in the south. All is going fairly well despite the low supply.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/8/2018 12:07:53 PM)

Here's what's going on around Bryansk right now. I'm in serious negotations over the
future managment of the city and there's small battles going on all around the area.
I'm advancing in the hope that the supply situation is going to be okay after a couple
of turns. I'm counting on it.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/8/2018 12:28:59 PM)

Here's what's going on up north around Leningrad right now. I've got a new CD gun
unit that I can use to bombard the Soviet ships, if there were any. I'm tempted to
disband it as it's in the way if I can't bombard with it. And toward the bottom of
the image the railhead is getting closer to the front all the time. Supply is fairly
good up here.

I did a save game event and zipped it up abd attached it here below for those of you
who want to take over from here, or look at the displays, or take a look at the Soviet
side or whatever you want from this file.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/8/2018 9:09:38 PM)

Odessa finally fell. I've been moving units away from the city so it's empty now
but there used to be a yellow-dense stack of Soviet units in the hex next to the
city and they were all destroyed. Now all those troops involved in the take down
can concentrate on Sevaspopol and this is early September so I'm optimistic I can
finish it by 4Dec41.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/8/2018 9:28:24 PM)

Here's combat round 5 and I finally captured Smolensk. I'm guessing the supply level
will rise a bit now. That's going to enable the advance to continue toward Moscow.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/8/2018 10:06:38 PM)

Here's the T22 front lines before I have moved anybody. There was one spot where some
Soviet armor got past my perimeter and into my backfield but I've got units ready to
surround him.

EDIT: I've got a notation on the image about the Soviet supply point being gone but
the truth is that the zoom-out has made it invisible. Zooming back down one level makes
it visible again.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/8/2018 10:22:55 PM)

Here's that spot where the Soviet armor unit went berzerk and got into my backfield
and is a threat to my comfortable sleep so I'm going to surround it and destroy it.
I need more than a light screen obviously, so I'll see what I can do to scrape some
more units from the nearby countryside. I may have to rail some in from the south.

The clearing of the territories is concluded so all those troops need fresh employment
and I was thinking of sending them to the east side of the Dneper river, the one that
runs through Kiev, to clear out the Soviet units down to D-town and then head east.

I'm going to run the Rumanians into the Crimea and areas south and see if 11th Army
can arrive in time to help with the Sevastopol take-down.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/8/2018 10:42:29 PM)

Here's the northern flank near Leningrad and I'm happy with the progress of the RR
engineers because the railhead is close enough for just one unit for these. I've
got a group of three units haaded northeast from Minsk and one group of three
nearing Kiev. The south is going to feed off the rail line from Sofia through
Bessarabia, passes near Odessa and thense I'm planning on running it into the
Crimea for the Sevastopol operation.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/8/2018 10:59:23 PM)

Here's the supply situation near Smolensk right now. It has improved a lot and the
units are happier, greener, but there was a news string that said that the Axis side
was experiencing supply difficulties; I'm guessing they are refering to the situation
dowm south which was poor as of my last scan. As soon as the rail reaches Smolensk
I'll have to transfer the RR engineers to the south route to give those folks some
relief, in probably another 20 turns or so. By then we will be almost through with
the first mud season.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/8/2018 11:12:53 PM)

I just now discovered that I'm going to be losing a lot of aircraft around T37 or so.
Just about the start of the first mud season. But the western front has needs too.
So I guess I'll share. I can't disband them early, planes and naval units can't be
disbanded, too bad, so I'm wondering if I should take them out of service early so as
not to depend on them any longer, or put them into the thick of things where they will
at least contribute some of their equipment to the pools through loses. I think I'll
move the bombers to Berlin and use the fighters I'm losing to garrison some of the
more important home country cities. That way I won't miss them when they are gone.
The reason I want to move the bombers to Berlin is to lessen the losses of the bombers
which have been heavy heretofor.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/8/2018 11:22:20 PM)

The force movement bias is now 50%. I was wondering why I couldn't move anything very
far. There must be an event that controls that for each side. Well, this is rather
unhandy. How am I supposed to win the war now? I'll see if I can't carry on with
the advance, just slower yet.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/9/2018 2:33:27 AM)

I'm moving my forces in the north so as to try to isolate Leningrad from the rest of
Russia by cutting all the rail lines and roads leading to the city. That way no more
reinforcements can be railed into the battlefield from Moscow. I've noticed that Elmer
is railing all his reinforcements to the Moscow area and from there they travel to their
final destination out in the field. They don't even get a turn of rest first, they are
just thrust into the thick of things once they respawn. Which means that they get to the
front faster but they are in really poor shape when they get there.

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/9/2018 2:39:18 AM)

Here's a spot in the lines where my units are really sparse and there's not a whole
lot of Soviet resistance yet. My units are spread out and not self-supporting. I
need to get organized in this area and deploy the troops better. Supply is poor and
there's no hurry to get a front line formed in this area by the Soviets yet so the
going is good.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/9D33A274051F4DEEACCE8C5470B6B90C.jpg[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: The Sun Also Rises ( D21 ) (2/9/2018 12:42:34 PM)

The Soviets must have had a change in their strategic bias or something because they
seemed to go berserk with their attacking. All over the map all up and down the line
they went crazy attacking. 80 battles in their turn. They gained some hexes and
caused several Axis units to back up. The character of the war has changed. I'm
thinking that the winter offensive is going to be a dozy.
