26 Nov 43 Interesting turn. I've played this game, and its predecessors, for decades now. I play just about every day. And still, I sometimes see something that I'd never seen before. And it's another lesson learned. The Japanese has a huge fighter commitment at Manila, with just patrol boats there. With my carriers so close to Manila, I didn't want my naval bombers to target those unimportant ships and run into the close to 200 enemy fighters. So I had them rest today. Except for the squadrons that I saw were trained in ASW. I put several dive bomber squadrons and at least one torpedo squadron on ASW. What happened was eye opening. The same happened in the afternoon. I'd never seen such a slaughter of search planes. But wait! I didn't have any bomber squadrons on search! The Seagull losses were understandable. But the bomber squadrons were on ASW duty! Apparently they can get shot down also, and in droves. And they spotted, and attacked, normal ships, which was particularly unexpected. So, there's always more to learn in this game. The enemy did try to attack the armada. I didn't learn what ships were targeted, since no bombers made it through. Here was the first attack: Morning Air attack on TF, near Lucena at 79,80 Weather in hex: Light cloud Raid detected at 114 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet. Estimated time to target is 37 minutes Japanese aircraft A6M5 Zero x 24 B6N2 Jill x 18 Allied aircraft Sea Hurricane Ib x 12 F4F-4 Wildcat x 10 FM-1 Wildcat x 31 F4U-1A Corsair x 60 F6F-3 Hellcat x 396 Japanese aircraft losses A6M5 Zero: 3 destroyed B6N2 Jill: 8 destroyed Allied aircraft losses FM-1 Wildcat: 2 destroyed It had to be discouraging for OPilot to run into 396 Hellcats. With so many enemy carriers lost, the fight is no longer a fair fight. But such is war. And it's only the end of 1943. I wonder what the CAP could be in a year from now. Multiple enemy attacks followed, with the results all the same: every attacker shot down. Total air losses were 26 Jills, 24 Lilys, 13 Vals, 6 Judys and 5 Zeros. Allied losses in the ASW activity over Manila were 14 SBD-5s, 8 SB2C-1s, 7 SOC-1s, 3 TBFs and 2 OS2U-3s. B-24s hit Clark AFB, finding some Jacks defending on ranged CAP. 6 Sallys, 5 Dinahs, 1 Lily and 4 Tojos were destroyed on the ground. Paras took an empty Lucena. Thousands of men will start unloading there today. Batangas will be invaded. I'm leaning towards isolating the enemy at Davao, but that will take some time, having to close all of the hex sides.
