thanks, for the help, reinstall has me back in action, all is well

Ekaton -> RE: HPS Tigers Unleashed - opinions needed (9/27/2018 10:24:24 AM)

Got it and tried a few times, but it’s just too slow for me. It definitely has potential to be the ultra realistic wargame some of us grognards wish for, but it’s seemingly not optimized to make use of the more modern CPUs or 64bit systems and is just too slow to be playable.

A curiosity, perhaps a great gun simulator as well, as it takes a mind boggling number of things into account when doing its many calculations, but I’d play SPWAW over this one anytime, albeit obviously only versus a real person or solitaire.

I really wish there was a game that would be as realistic as TU and as fast and well designed as SPWAW, with a decent AI and SPWAW’s modded database.

Greetings E,
I am in complete agreement and appreciate all the complaints and frustration of original buyers of Tigers Unleashed. It kept me from purchasing . But my thanks to all who brought this to the developers attention so that finally a "stable" version is now out. You made the latest patch possible and this was the reason for me to buy in. [&o]

Rosseau -> RE: HPS Tigers Unleashed - opinions needed (9/28/2018 1:48:32 AM)

If you set LOS to a realistic 3k and dial down the reporting details during combat, the turns should move along fairly quickly. Yes, I will still get up and take a walk around sometimes during a turn, but before it was completely unplayable on an i7 3.6.

I can completely understand, empathize and sympathize with this completely reasonable frustration/anger at inexcusable silence (at the very least).

A take a large chunk of that back, now that I've researched the (essentially a) claim of silence or lack of communication by HPS... There was definitely some communication...

I don't really care at this point, but the results of your "research" are very misleading, for several reasons. First, the fact remains that the game was hopefully broken and incomplete upon release and remained so for years thereafter. Second, you don't indicate which issues, if any, the various betas fixed, and broke. Third, you don't mention that none of those betas were available through HPS, but rather "on the side" through ASID and/or Wodin. Finally, the fact is that the dev never, ever, communicated with the community on the forums, such as they were. This game remains the second-worse wargame purchase I've ever made (the first being Matrix's WiF).

Possibly misleading, but I was under the impression the real issue was silence and NO communication. I merely noted that there was "some." And that was the only angle I was correcting in my previous post.

I do not know about whether the announced betas were public or not. But "I" must assume announced betas were made public, based on the announced 2014 beta still being available 3 years later.

I do know that unannounced betas were not made public. The ones I contributed, just prior to the website hack and this patch, were far too short-lived, release publicly (or even mention). Some were a day or two, some were only hours.

But there was a definite dry period for all of 2015 & 2016. That itself would've left me with a "no communication" and "abandonment" impressions at that point. (But I had to correct my previously implied criticisms on the big communication picture. I believe we consumers owe each other the most correct info we can find. We ARE in it together. ...Or at least the sellers are in our wallets together!)

I've known for awhile, that Scott has and had been dealing with some health issues. Some of which would preclude his doing anything, for a while. This knowledge was made public recently, So I can mention one reason I'm much more apt to be lenient and give the benefit of the doubt. (That and I've loved Scott's HPS games since the 90s. *grin*)

I've never heard of that being a requirement, or even an expectation. So that one is new to me, after the lessons learned by the publisher of Jane's F-15 (name escapes me now). (If I was a publisher and saw that debacle, I'd tell everyone in my employ to never even log on to this newfangled interwebs thing)

You do have every right to your anger, no matter what I say about that one aspect. I respect that. But, you still EARNED the patch! You DESERVE to have a working game (albeit FAR too late).

What is "wif?"

My worst buy was the original Carriers at War... it required 128k!!! So I couldn't try it at the store. (Huge game!!! Being the first game I ever bought with a memory requirement over 64k... It SHOULD have been great for me! *grin*?) There were others here at Matrix and some seemingly worse. But I believe one's first, leaves the strongest and longest lasting memory. *grin?*

Indeed. Years later, bugs still being removed, single map scenarios never released, multiplayer only via various work arounds, no AI, etc. Plus IIRC it very, very expensive ($150?). To top it all, I just didn't care for the game system, although that is purely subjective...

Freyr Oakenshield -> RE: HPS Tigers Unleashed - opinions needed (9/30/2018 8:28:29 PM)

I read somewhere that they were going to implement some improvements, or... maybe it was a suggestion they should do so... Anyway, I think we're getting off the original topic a bit. I guess I need to say sorry to myself as I am the OP... [:D]

Red2112 -> RE: HPS Tigers Unleashed - opinions needed (9/30/2018 9:32:00 PM)

A working game would be, IF the game would work at itīs full potential, which would mean "level 3", full reports and FOW. Myself and others have already confirmed that "if" you donīt want to wait 15min. for a turn to end, then you should lower your settings. So then for a game thatīs been patched since 2011, it dosenīt seem itīs "working" 100%. Unless waiting for calculations is part of the game. There are other things that donīt seem to work right, like pathfinding, or having a unit not move through open ground 5-6 turns in to game. Sure thereīs delays in orders, but next to your command unit (German with radios), and no threat close by?

Not to sure about TU, but with PoA, missions are scripted to a point were you know were the OPFOR is going to spawn. Speaking of PoA. why lesser scenarios then TU if both are priced the same? Shouldent the buyers of PoA deserve the same?

A patch a year is not quite "support" frendly, specialy if that patch fixes/breaks other things.

If this was all about me, I would have not made videos to let people know about the TSS system. Since I donīt want any more hassels with fans or what have you, I since then taken down those videos. In another case scenario and with this price tag, others would have made videos complaining about the lack of support and issues with the TSS system. Scott is lucky that thereīs little user base. Triple A games at $60 get bashed by fans when the donīt deliver. So, instead of trying to sell TU, go ahead and put up a video that shows how TU works at itīs full potential with no waiting time in turns. I know it dosenīt, but for respect to Scott I wont go that far...

Do respect others by not cherry picking each comment, as we all have the right to give our opinion, specially when one has spent $120. The so called "deserved" patch has only made TU better from the last build, and that is all. It hasent fixed all the issues it has. I even had a issue that my audio would get cut out in these recent patch. Strangely it didnīt happen with PoA which uses the same engine. But if things are so "top secret" under the hood, then maybe we might NEVER know what works and/or how it was intended to work. I think some of us know what a "simulation" is and what you should get with it. By that I mean, not waiting 10min. to fire/hit at point blank...

Never intended to get personal or off-topic. I just donīt like to lose mine or my wifes money! TU was a present from my wife.

No words, just show me a video at 100%...

Isn't that program essentially a Vassal Module? (In that you move pieces around with no A.I. ...or am I thinking of the wrong game?) As to the scenarios, could you build your own, based on scenarios from the acual boardgame? (If you didn't dislike the game system, of course. *grin*)

Rosseau -> RE: HPS Tigers Unleashed - opinions needed (10/1/2018 1:30:02 AM)

I set communications, etc. at 100% - no delays. Completely contrary to the spirit of the game, but it moves things along.

I don't want to gum up this thread with WiF stuff, but it is not Vassal module, or not billed as one. Fans of the WiF boardgame seem to like it, but it was by no means worth the price in my view.

I know it's not an actual vassal module, but isn't the end result pretty much the same? (you move counters around the map onscreen, with no computer opponent(s)). The essential part being that there is/are/was ZERO computer opponents within the program?)

I Installed TU again. Fresh vanilla install, then latest patch (v1.2.10). Expert setting at level 3, FOW setting at level 4, reports set to standard and LOS at 3k. Initial first three turns in the "Monster Tanks" scenario seem to work well so far, even with Task Force HQ giving move orders to all AI (Staff officers--> S3-Operations). Will keep testing, need to see if formations (move order) works well, and the audio. Fingers crossed...

Acording to Wodin in a PM we exchanged some time ago, the LOS settings should not be touched, as there was some high-tech stuff going on in the background that had to do with time and space, so I never touched that. That might had been one of the problems all the time.

Donīt get me wrong, itīs not like I donīt want it to work, itīs more the frustration of some of us who really wanted to enjoy the TSS system and really had our hopes high, to then find out it had or has bugs which made it useless to start up. Aside from all the time spent trying to learn how it works.

Hope PoA works too!

Freyr Oakenshield -> RE: HPS Tigers Unleashed - opinions needed (9/18/2021 3:38:26 PM)

New updates have just been released for both Tigers Unleashed and Point Of Attack 2.0 / 2.5, if anybody is still interested...

https://www.hpssims.com/Pages/Updates/up_TSS/up_TSS.asp

hapshott -> RE: HPS Tigers Unleashed - opinions needed (9/18/2021 6:09:47 PM)

Thanks for the info about the new updates.

I installed it and I had the idea that it was a bit faster. But at turn 4 I got the dreated "divide by zero error". So still not as advertised [:@]

I also got a warning that you cannnot enable more then 4 cores or you will get errors. So I reduced this as said. But still the errors did occur.

I think I will give up on this "game". It's so slow. This is with just a small map and a few units and a low LOS value.

Fortunately we have tops and pits which works great with dosbox. Also more and more games are using communication delays.

Freyr Oakenshield -> RE: HPS Tigers Unleashed - opinions needed (9/18/2021 7:41:28 PM)

Well, I don't own this game so I can't say anything about its technical problems. Only seen gameplay on yt, which looked interesting. Been toying with the idea of buying it, which is why I've been following news about new updates.

hapshott -> RE: HPS Tigers Unleashed - opinions needed (9/18/2021 8:20:34 PM)

Hello Freyr,

I was pleased with your post. Otherwise I would have missed these updates. So many thanks for this.

I have both TU and POA2. Both are superslow with very long wait times between the turns. It seems to calculate a lot of stuff. Just too much.

I tried to make several scenarios which the boardgame "panzerblitz" had. I never could make it such that the wait times were bearable. Pzblitz scen 1 took 20 minutes betweens turns. This is with a i7 and 16Gb memory. So I stopped with trying this and uninstalled TU.

I expected a modernized version of tops and pits. But it isn't.

My current advise is to not buy it. Or you are a ww2 general who wants to calculate the result of a battlegroup vs battlegroup before doing it in reality and has weeks of time before invading Russia [:)]. Fortunately these days are over.

Rosseau -> RE: HPS Tigers Unleashed - opinions needed (9/19/2021 2:55:47 AM)

Thanks Freyr for the heads-up on the patches. I might have missed them. Glad you are still part of the Matrix forum, as well.

Although I've played both games since release, it's hard to wholeheartedly recommend to anyone without reservations.

Asid's post is quite accurate: It is more of a sim than a game, but a pretty cool and unique one.

Honestly, I can't think of something quite so interesting released over the past year or so. There seems to be a lack of solid wargame/sim releases here or on Steam, although some are forthcoming.

The fact that both games continue to be supported means a lot, though. If they were on Steam, I'd gift you one of them just to get your reaction.

I will also assume you have Matrix Flashpoint: Red Storm, which is an immediate buy despite its age.

Best wishes!
