Before Moscow the Soviets abandoned Vyazma, shifting many a division northward and cutting off 2 German Panzerdivisions.

In heavy fighting it proved possible to shrink the pocket considerably and free the surrounded Panzers.

A bit further south the Soviets had used the concentration of most of AG Centers troops to the north to surround a few infantry divisions.

The river was therefore crossed in force and contact partly reastablished. Poltava could be captured by 1st Cavaly Division against light resistance.

But alas, the partisans had struck and fuel and supply would soon be hard to come by. Two Army HQs with lots of construction battalions were dispatched. It was hoped that the army commanders would be able to correct the situation as the northern FBD had to be railled to the location and would not be able to repair anything before the next week.
