rkr1958 -> RE: Witness to World War 2. (3/7/2019 3:21:34 AM)

Turn 13. Sep/Oct 1941. Allied #7.

Actions. Free France - naval, Great Britain - land, China - land, USA - combine, USSR - land.

USSR Rail. The blue factory at Stalino is dismantled and railed east to Magnitogorsk.

USSR. Post Movement & Air Re-base. Things are looking grim. The only positive is the weather and the the second front that Great Britain is opening against the Italians in the Med. Stalin is pressing Churchill to expand this "second" front by invading Sicily.

Turn 13. Sep/Oct 1941. Allied #7.

Great Britain. Amphibious Invasion. Trapani, Italy.

At the cost of two divisions (1st and 2nd infantry), Great Britain is able to establish a bridgehead on Sicily. At sea ready to reinforce this bridgehead are Alexander's HQ-I, Gort's HQ-I and an engineering division.

FYI. With the Royal Marines having a zoc-lock on the empty city of Palermo and with not Italian supply (CP or TRS) off the Italian Coast, the two Italian corps in Sicily are now out of supply.

Time for a bit of back-seat WiFFing. The CW ought to have invaded the port of Bari, north of Taranto, instead of Sicily. They would have gotten a ZoC on the rail line into Taranto, meaning the Axis couldn't reinforce it, and then they could walk into the city unopposed subsequently (unless the turn happens to end early). Occupying a factory city in Italy is one of the possible conditions to trigger the conquest of Italy. Occupying Sicily is not.

Also, with no Italian ZoC, the notional in Bari would have been weaker, meaning a much better combat result on the same die roll.

Now I come to think of it, why was the notional in Sicily 4 factors? I count 1 base, +1 for home country, +1 for being in a friendly ZoC. Where is the 4th factor coming from? Did a unit invade from the 2 box?

+1 for being a notional in a major power.

No, I counted that already - that was the +1 for home country.

The only other positive modifier to the notional unit combat factor is if the notional is in a city hex, which isn't the case for this invasion.

So, either you had a unit invade from the 2 box or there was some kind of bug.

Orm -> RE: Witness to World War 2. (3/7/2019 3:27:37 PM)

The invading marine corps was in the 2-box. Hence the mysterious +1 to the notional.

See post #674.

Yes, that does look to have been the better choice.

Yes, the Royal marines invaded from the 2-box hence they extra notional.

Turn. 13. Sep/Oct 1941. Axis #9.

Italy. Both Italy and Sicily are reinforced and the axis forces on Sicily are put back into supply by the Italian garrison moving into Palermo.

End of Turn Check.

The allies would like to get another impulse. However, there's a 30% chance of turn ending.

Roll = 1 < 4, turn ends. This is the second turn in the row where the axis have gotten both the first and last impulse of the turn.

Both the Soviets and Japanese draw a chit this turn. The Soviets draw 3-chit which they put in their offensive pool. The Japanese draw a 2-chit which goes in their defensive pool.
