BillBrown -> Bill Brings Banzai (6/15/2019 5:58:37 PM)

I have found a new game, hopefully it will go the distance.

As the title suggests, I will be playing Japan for the first time, this will be fun.

Scenario 2, no house rules, just a few turn one rules.
1. Allied TF that exist on turn one can change their orders, no new TFs can be created
2. Only ground and air units either in China or attached to China Command can be given orders on turn 1.
3. No deep penetrations by the Japanese( No Mersing turn 1, no Palambang, etc. )

So I am sure I will be looking for help, mostly in the production area. I do have tracker up and running
so that will help. But there are decisions I have not have to make concering ships construction and aircraft,
etc. I am sure I will drown in the details, but I will persevere.

Best of luck to you.

I will be reading & commenting, but of course have to little exp. to consult.

Enjoy [:)]

Looking forward to the match, but who is your opponent?

AllenK is my opponent, I do not think he is highly experienced in WitP AE, but I am not sure.
It looks like he is/was playing Warsprite1 in World in flames.

Bill, I'll be glad to lend a hand, sharing everything I know about playing from the Japanese seat..... [sm=innocent0009.gif]

Let's see, my zero + your zero = Nada.

Thanks CR.

BillBrown -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/15/2019 7:33:28 PM)

A question to try and make sure I understand.

I have 2 Ki-43-Ia Oscar factories. They do not have an upgrade path so I would have to change them manually.
I have 1 Ki-43-Ic Oscar Factory. If I do nothing it will upgrade automatically to the Ki-43-IIa in 8/42.

I hope that is correct.

The stock game doesn't have Oscar Ia factories, so rely on tracker to tell you what the factories upgrade to. Stock starts with 1 squadron flying Ia, 1 flying Ib, and the rest flying Ic. The Ia and Ib can upgrade to Ic as soon as aircraft are available. I don't know what your mod has, but I would think you might want to produce Ia's for a month or so, changing one factory to Ic by the end of December '41 and the other by the end of January '42. If the IIa becomes available in Aug '42, then that's 3 months earlier than stock (which is Nov '42). Yes, it upgrades automatically.

Hope this helps.

BillBrown -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/15/2019 8:51:38 PM)

It sure looks like there are Ki-43-Ia factories in scenario 2.
Tracker says there is no upgrade path.

BillBrown -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/15/2019 8:57:20 PM)

And Tracker ( and the game ) says the Ki43-IIa is available in 8/42
I know you are trying to help, but you are giving out bad information

Actually I now see the problem. We are playing scenario 2 and your information
comes from Scenario 1

jdsrae -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/15/2019 11:41:07 PM)

I’ll just say good luck with the industry side of things [:D]
It took me about 6 months of playing with spreadsheets in the evening to get my head around it all for my latest Scenario 1 game vs AI.
My “summary” reference notes for next time run to about 50 pages!

Canoerebel -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/16/2019 12:03:32 AM)

An Alternate Title for this AAR: Gents, Here are Many Reasons Not to Play as the Japanese Side

Good luck, Bill. I'll be reading and hoping you do well. I'd think that to play Japan, you'll have to learn a lot through analysis and help, so that your AAR might turn into a tutorial. Arg.

BillBrown -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/16/2019 12:42:32 AM)

I hope it does, there are still a lot of things I am very unsure about. I think my first answer got answered. I am sure I will have a lot more.

jdsrae -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/16/2019 12:56:42 AM)

In the factory screen you will see a toggle for “keep” or “upgrade”.
If set to “keep” the factory will stay producing the current aircraft. I think the default is set to keep, so if that’s true and you do nothing you won’t see it auto upgrade.
If it is set to upgrade it will auto upgrade to the next aircraft in the line (if there is one).
I don’t use tracker, but I refer to the database a lot to find out what upgrades to what.

Korvar -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/16/2019 1:44:29 AM)

I'm glad you found an opponent, Bill. I was considering offering myself as an opponent, but I can't responsibly get into PBEM games until I get SeaBee sorted. Perhaps next time!

That said, I think I'll follow along here in an attempt to learn alongside you the mysteries of the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere industry system. [;)]

BillBrown -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/16/2019 2:26:58 AM)

I most likely will give pointers on how not to do the Japanese industry. [:(]

Sorry, I said stock, I meant Scenario 1. I've never looked at Scenario 2.
Anyway, I would change the 0(5) Ia factory to Ic and then expand it to 30.
Depending on how many squadrons you have flying Ia, expand the 5(0) factory to 20 or 30. You'll likely be flying them for a month or 2 until you'll have enough Ic's to upgrade the squadrons.
That's my 2 cents on Oscars.

You can always check the next upgrade in the Intelligence screen -> Aircraft replacement pool -> last column

Scenario 2 has a lot of streamlined R&D paths, check them out and use them wisely.

Korvar -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/16/2019 12:05:50 PM)

Is the 'Economic Primer' contained in the forum squeeze document still considered the best intro to industry management? (FYI, the orange 'Scarica Adesso' button in the link is the download button)

zuluhour -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/16/2019 12:33:27 PM)

good luck Bill. As I intend to watch the Allied side of things, I'll check out now and hope to comment.......much later.[:)]

Korvar -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/16/2019 6:34:31 PM)

FYI, apparently there is an updated version of the Japanese Production Primer available in this thread.

btd64 -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/16/2019 8:00:59 PM)

Bill, I'm glad that you have a new opponent. I'm going to recommend your AAR to my current opponent to learn from. Good luck....GP

thanks Brian.

And thank you Kovar, downloaded and I will look at it.

Chickenboy -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/16/2019 8:53:24 PM)

Hi Bill. Congratulations and sympathies are both in order. It's a mighty big fish to fry, but you'll learn a lot. Boy Howdee, you'll learn a lot.

I'm happy to help with any questions you have also. I've several PBEM games in Sc. 2 under my belt as the Japanese.

Tenno Heiko BANZAI!

Chickenboy -> RE: Bill does Japan (6/16/2019 9:00:15 PM)

One point that I would suggest: get your research priorities lined up sooner rather than later. Think of what planes you want in abundance in 1943-1944 and focus on a small handful of the best models available to you. Then work backwards to plan your engine research, airframe research and current production accordingly.

For example, I wouldn't have more than two production lines on the Oscar lineage after January or February 1942. So go ahead and switch one of your -Ia production lines to -Ic lines *now* and expand the -Ic lines as you see fit. The other -Ia factory can go to produce another aircraft altogether at minimal penalty since it's starting small.

Tidbit for today: A vestigial oddity of scenario 2 is that Ha-35 engines are used for the Tojo (Ki-44-IIa/b/c). In scenario 1 it's Ha-34. Being as you will want to produce a whole shedload of these planes over the course of the war, you should bear that in mind with allocation of engine production.
