How much of that convoy's AAA value was in light guns? How much in heavy guns? That may be the difference. But with all of the fighters there, those Royal Air Force Liberators should not have attacked.

Light AA like the 25mm can't reach bombers at 10k ft

I know that. But you stated that:

quote:

that convoy had quite some AA value and one Liberator was shot down before making it's bomb run...

So how much was heavy AAA.

But those bombers should never even made it that far with all of the good fighters there.

quote:

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid detected at 79 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 27 minutes

Japanese aircraft
N1K2-J George x 41
Ki-84a Frank x 88

Allied aircraft
Liberator GR.III x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-84a Frank: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Liberator GR.III: 4 destroyed, 2 damaged
Liberator GR.III: 1 destroyed by flak

Japanese Ships
AK Hokkai Maru
AK Kirishima Maru

and this one was both surprising and highly annoying... surprising because those Liberators were drawn in from Ceylon by a minelaying RN sub (so the mine laying mission actually did damage -> to the RAF ) and annoying because it's the same stupid sh*t with the air routine as always... we have quite some fighters in the air and the easily down those Navy Liberators one after another... and when there were only three bombers left? It's the same idiotic behaviour I have mentioned a couple of times already, the routine starts to go into asshole mode, myriads of messages of "3 Franks scrambling" until the exact maximum of fighters on CAP is reached and then the combat is over... makes it the usual three bombers to make it 100% safe through the CAP... seen with 800 fighters on CAP vs 8 bombers, seen with 150 fighters vs 10 bombers, it's always the same... go and keep praising that silly stuff...

that convoy had quite some AA value and one Liberator was shot down before making it's bomb run...

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x Liberator GR.III bombing from 10000 feet *
Naval Attack: 4 x 250 lb GP Bomb

CAP engaged:
263 Ku S-1 with N1K2-J George (0 airborne, 28 on standby, 0 scrambling)
13 plane(s) not yet engaged, 0 being recalled, 0 out of immediate contact.
Group patrol altitude is 5000 , scrambling fighters between 5000 and 16000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 27 minutes
9th Sentai with Ki-84a Frank (0 airborne, 30 on standby, 0 scrambling)
14 plane(s) not yet engaged, 0 being recalled, 0 out of immediate contact.
Group patrol altitude is 10000 , scrambling fighters between 5000 and 14000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 25 minutes
64th Sentai with Ki-84a Frank (0 airborne, 30 on standby, 0 scrambling)
14 plane(s) not yet engaged, 0 being recalled, 0 out of immediate contact.
Group patrol altitude is 20000 , scrambling fighters between 4000 and 20000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 28 minutes

The game even tells you what's going on here...emphasis mine.

You get 27 minutes notice and 25 minutes to get your aircraft into position.

Most of the AA value would have been tied up in the 25mm popguns. There are only a couple of 8cm DP guns on each of those ships that can fire and be effective.

RangerJoe -> RE: AAR 1944 (10/14/2020 8:15:11 PM)

If you keep track of the number of units, some of them will disappear which would be the smaller support units with little to no AV. Then the stack will lose AV even faster. It would lost AV faster if you could attack them in the open . . .

Is that stack still moving? If so, try to direct it to an open hex.

and this one was both surprising and highly annoying... surprising because those Liberators were drawn in from Ceylon by a minelaying RN sub (so the mine laying mission actually did damage -> to the RAF ) and annoying because it's the same stupid sh*t with the air routine as always... we have quite some fighters in the air and the easily down those Navy Liberators one after another... and when there were only three bombers left? It's the same idiotic behaviour I have mentioned a couple of times already, the routine starts to go into asshole mode, myriads of messages of "3 Franks scrambling" until the exact maximum of fighters on CAP is reached and then the combat is over... makes it the usual three bombers to make it 100% safe through the CAP... seen with 800 fighters on CAP vs 8 bombers, seen with 150 fighters vs 10 bombers, it's always the same... go and keep praising that silly stuff...

that convoy had quite some AA value and one Liberator was shot down before making it's bomb run...

So in other words the hex needs radar.

... But what about the incident in Rangoon where the 3 B-29's seemly escaped the Japanese overwhelming George, Frank CAP and bombed their target.

And the fact the KB main body was attacked on two occasion's but the Cap said "scramble scramble scramble" air combat ends and bombs fall around the KB.

Need to check if those bomber attacks had exactly 3 bombers attacking but the again the A6M5 Zero is a rubbish fighter with poor speeds by 1944.

What is it with the number 3 and the air routine??

29000Kevin -> RE: AAR 1944 (10/15/2020 12:25:20 AM)

Here it is the Rangoon incident.

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid detected at 24 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 7 minutes

Japanese aircraft

Allied aircraft losses
B-29-1 Superfort: 3 destroyed
B-29-1 Superfort: 1 destroyed by flak

WHAAAT?! B-29 attacking... I wasn't expecting to see B-29 at this date already, let alone on Ceylon... Mundy said he wasn't expecting that much CAP over Rangoon but it's my main base in the area so that shouldn't be that much surprising... what strikes me again is the dumb behaviour of the airroutine of having all but the last three bombers shot down, then it's 5 minutes of never ending messages like "3 Franks scrambling" until the max number of CAP fighters is airborne and the combat ends with always the last three bombers not being attacked... silly, have seen it over KB with every 10 bomber attack vs 800 fighters on CAP and it's the same here... silly... but hey, the perfect airroutine after all...

Serious? Some two dozen fighters then attacked the bombers and then the combat STOPPED... I was watching messages like "3 Zeroes joing combat" for about 8-10 minutes until the magic number of fighters reached 553 and then -> the battle was over... OMFG these none working routines... 10 minutes all the game did was like launching aircraft, hundreds in the air but not a single one was attacking the bombers...

just to see them bombing Zuikaku...

Note how no ones airborne.

Are you 100% sure that The radar and air routine was 100% working and wasn't smoking or something, IDK man but I find this result "odd".

Also doesn't CAP intercept planes after they have attacked a ship?

But then again almost most of the air operations in India were cursed with something since the a.i at the super KB refused to launch planes at the Allied landing ships for three bloody days, which lead to the "safe" landing of over 500,000 Men into their POW camps at the swamps filled with Crocodiles.

7 minutes of warning, so effectively tactical surprise.

Frank A max speed - 392

B-29-1 max speed - 357

In the context of only 35 mph difference, the B-29's escaping seems reasonable given the lack of time the Franks have to respond, as well as the fairly narrow speed advantage they possess.

Yes, castor troy has "cursed AI" [8|]

More likely that a number of potential variables that influence carrier operations has been overlooked.

If there was a longstanding issue in AE of IJ carrier aircraft not flying at large fleets, I feel very confident that it would have been raised on the tech support section long before now.

Given that castor seems convinced there's an issue, I'm suprised to see that he hasn't posted there in the last year, and all the issues raised prior are not related to the current issue (mostly around attack bombers)...

Well you have your argument set up and its backed up with solid evidence.

I would've made a bigger comment with me talking about the manual and how I'm new here but it got deleted acidently.

Still if half the B-29 squadron was caught by the Frank's then surely the other 4 would be right next to them for the defensive fire... argh I'll let it go for.

Now it is time to wait again to see if the game pulls this stunt on the Japanese again.

Copy/paste is your friend before clicking the "OK" button on this site :)

The manual doesn't give as much information as I'd like, and there are aspects of it where clarification would be helpful, and a few instances where the game has changed slightly. That said, it is a good resource to give an insight as to what's involved in game mechanics - as a general rule, things rarely hinge on a single factor or variable in AE. And as with all Grigsby games, you can do everything right and still lose.

quote:

Still if half the B-29 squadron was caught by the Frank's then surely the other 4 would be right next to them for the defensive fire... argh I'll let it go for.

So for context for the B-29 attack, working from CT's provided narrative.

You've 7 superforts that get tactical surprise on a IJ CAP. The CAP takes its toll on the bombers (hence the three destroyed) before the bombers reach their target (where another is destroyed by flak). The rest of the planes not already on the air (the planes on standby) are launching to intercept, but given the raid has is departing they're not going to be able to effectively chase departing bombers given the small speed differential.

What I wonder if Castor understands is that if they did pursue the bombers as he wishes, they'd likely all be destroyed, but then for the next raid would have his CAP horribly out of position for any follow-on raids.

There's also a wider point about the nature of air combat in the Pacific - even in the late-war engagements where American CAP was radar controlled, everything is dependent on visual identification. In my view the game gets that right (there is maybe a challenge in how it works regarding naval combat, but I think on the whole I'm content with the decisions made by the devs there).

A hundred radar sets and a thousand fighters on CAP are not worth a button if a fighter pilot can't see the plane in his gunsight. Squalls, cloud cover, even camouflaged planes against the green canopy or vast blue carpet of the Pacific...

castor troy -> RE: AAR 1944 (10/16/2020 12:46:58 PM)

After so many years I can only wonder about more and more and more abstractions people are coming up with. You really think that all those asumptions and abstractions you find all the time were going into the coding? Seriously? Go find one of the guys that were part of the "team", perhaps one that left in anger still gives you a hint a decade after release. Even if they must not lose a word about the development nor the code, it was not a puppy meeting where all was fun and games it was more like curse and murder and it was like a wonder that they even managed to release what they released and this is especially true for the air routine. Of course, making more abstractions all over can still make a single 1 0 1 1 1 0 0 routine the best routine ever made on this planet, you just have to abstract the result enough and it's great. Fantasy is all you need.

As for the manual, not sure I posted it in the AAR or on another thread, discussing the manual was fun and games perhaps a month after release but it was never spot on, discussing the manual a decade after release is mostly absurd.

I didn't even want to answer on it but your comment about the game is giving you all the needed details like "Time for all group planes to reach interception is 18 minutes". Yes, that's a nice info but you seem not to read it well enough. It says Time for ALL group planes to reach interception... out of 800 Zekes on CAP, if just 25% could reach interception, it would be 200 fighters. 200 vs halve a dozen bombers. But hey, no matter how many hundreds of fighters were on CAP in all those interceptions against 6-20 enemy bombers that I have posted lately, literally every time the combat stopped when there were only 3 bombers to fight left, then minute long messages of packs of fighters scrambling until the max number on CAP was reached and then the combat was over. Go find your abstractions for EVERY of those engagements. Go figure.

the enemy has been cut off for weeks now and is starving so hard that every turn we score 30+ victory points for Allied ground losses which are all resulting from starving units in the Jessore pocket as there is no other ground combat going on at the moment... for weeks we have been bombing at 27k feet with lots of AA fire until it totally stopped due to lack of supply for the AA units... then we were going down to 20k ft, no AA, 15k ft, no AA, 10k ft, no AA... yesterday I've thought it was a good idea to go down to 6k ft to increase the damage of my air attacks and voila, full AA fire and the highest losses to AA I have ever seen in the game, we lose nearly 150 bombers to flak with roughly 100 crews lost...

thought about the possibility of the enemy magically receiving supplies yesterday so up to 20k ft we went again... no single flak burst... the enemy keeps starving, no supply... where the Bofors were receiving all the supply to murder my bomber fleet in just one day is a miracle I can't solve...

TF 107 encounters mine field at Hakodate (119,53)

Allied Ships
SS Tinosa, Mine hits 1

why would an Allied sub sink from a Japanese mine? Would be totally unrealistic I guess... what's a good abstraction for unrealistic? Must be halve a dozen subs so far passing through Hakodate hitting a mine, they just move on, able to submerge, able to sink ships and stay on station... after hitting a mine? A sub? [sm=crazy.gif] delete it if you can't make it work properly...

waiting for real life incidents where a sub was able to submerge after hitting a mine... well, they all submerged but for their last time... have only spent roughly 10 minutes on google and didn't even find one where a sub survived a mine hit, only found subs of all different nations being lost to mines though... there might be one, perhaps more, dunno... but I do know that a sub is not able to submerge with a big hole in the hull...

After so many years I can only shake my head about more and more and more abstractions people are coming up with. You really think that all those asumptions and abstractions you find all the time were going into the coding? Seriously?

Yes. I have absolutely no reason to doubt the competence of TheElf as air team lead. To be blunt, I doubt any game has had someone so well qualified for the role.

I even went back to 2008 for a look at AE in beta format, and my views still hold true - https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1910523

quote:

Go find one of the guys that were part of the "team", perhaps one that left in anger still gives you a hint a decade after release. Even if they must not lose a word about the development nor the code, it was not a puppy meeting where all was fun and games it was more like curse and murder and it was like a wonder that they even managed to release what they released and this is especially true for the air routine

Not quite sure what your point is here.

Non-disclosure agreements are common in this setting, and even more so when the underlying code is owned by someone else.

Was the game a labour of love? Absolutely.

Would anyone say it is a perfect game? Likely not.

Is it as fundamentally flawed as you would make out? No.

quote:

Of course, making more abstractions all over can still make a single 1 0 1 1 1 0 0 routine the best routine ever made on this planet, you just have to abstract the result enough and it's great. Fantasy is all you need.

What is AE other than abstracted 1's and 0's [:)]

quote:

As for the manual, not sure I posted it in the AAR or on another thread, discussing the manual was fun and games perhaps a month after release but it was never spot on, discussing the manual a decade after release is mostly absurd.

The manual was never spot on by design - I'm sure it was a Grigsby principle to keep the information given to players fairly high level.

I'd disagree that it is absurd - the manual is very good at giving you the variables involved in various game mechanics.

quote:

I didn't even want to answer on it but your comment about the game is giving you all the needed details like "Time for all group planes to reach interception is 18 minutes". Yes, that's a nice info but you seem not to read it well enough. It says Time for ALL group planes to reach interception...

No, I can read fine.

There is absolutely no substitute for seeing the combat animation for to understand what happened however...

mind_messing -> RE: AAR 1944 (10/16/2020 1:38:33 PM)

quote:

out of 800 Zekes on CAP, if just 25% could reach interception, it would be 200 fighters. Go figure.

Some thoughts in response to your edit:

1. Just because planes are on CAP, doesn't mean they engage. Just because they engage, doesn't mean they do damage.

2. I think the logic of not sending all 800 planes to intercept a single raid should be apparent.

3. WITP was before my time, but my understanding was that air combat in that involved the kind of large scale battles of attrition on both sides that you seem to be wanting to see. The game has moved on since then, and into a much more realistic space.

4. Consider the skies above Germany, 1943 onwards. The US 8th Air Force faced substantial opposition from a Luftwaffe in many respects better equipped for anti-bomber duties than the IJNAF or IJAAF. Were raids regularly wiped out before reaching the target?

quote:

why would an Allied sub sink from a Japanese mine? Would be totally unrealistic I guess... what's a good abstraction for unrealistic? Must be halve a dozen subs so far passing through Hakodate hitting a mine, they just move on, able to submerge, able to sink ships and stay on station... after hitting a mine? A sub? delete it if you can't make it work properly...

waiting for real life incidents where a sub was able to submerge after hitting a mine... well, they all submerged but for their last time... have only spent roughly 10 minutes on google and didn't even find one where a sub survived a mine hit, only found subs of all different nations being lost to mines though... there might be one, perhaps more, dunno... but I do know that a sub is not able to submerge with a big hole in the hull...

Depends on the type of mine. Some of the Japanese mines have a very low effect rating. IIRC only the sub-launched mines pack a hefty punch.

Also there's in-game variation in damage. A "hit" just means there was a roll for damage, and that roll could reflect anything from blundering directly into the mine to the mine exploding at some distance from the ship.

See, for example, naval combat where "hits" do not always translate into damage.

quote:

back at 10k ft, no flak burst... none... there isn't a single point of supply for any of the large calibre AA guns, not one...

I've seen the same - I think that it is the combat report feeding back on instances of damage caused by normal operations during the flight.

Seems to be a classic case of you not fully understanding the river crossing and ground combat routines here.

Allied forces attacking at Poona without having a chance to achieve anything against my well experienced units... we were only able to dig some foxholes in rough terrain but it's enough to cause way more casualties to the attacker than we suffered, one low experienced division that has come as reinforcement some time ago takes 100 disabled inf squads but the rest is spread out so will be out of disabled state soon... as you can see on the map we are trying to form another pocket, cutting off the Allied from the South as we are moving our tank regiments from the dot base to the South East up onto the road... on the road there's one enemy armored unit but we are bringing 600+ av in IJA tanks so that should be easy to dislodge... our tanks weren't spotted until today so it's going to be a nice surprise for the Allied when they show up on the road right in the back of their Army at Poona...

the enemy has been starving for quite some time and if we take the average daily losses it takes roughly 150 days more until they reach 0 assault value... lol... and even then it will be bloody to kill them off in the swamp hex... it all comes down to the Allied offense in Western India, if we can hamper or stall it we will have enough time to clear the pocket neare Jessore... in five months it will already be end of 44 though... WOW! Back to back attack at Poona with even slightly better result for the Allied but more destroyed squads within their lines already... while I'm not afraid of losing Poona against this force we are moving in reinforcements from Calcutta/Jessore as I don't only want to hold Poona for a while, the goal now is to cut off and destroy this Allied spearhead in Western India... the couple of Australian Brigades are totally trashed now, the divisions in the stack still seem to be in good shape though...

Alpha77 -> RE: AAR 1944 (10/18/2020 12:21:56 PM)

Is it possible the game is so detailed even seperate munitions are tracked (internal not for us to see)?

The heavy AA ran out of heavy shells but the light AA still has plenty cause they were not firing when you flew above 10k height. You dropped to 6k and all the light AA let loose [X(] Still a bit too serious losses against troops in desperate situation and no shelter. At least in a city they would have protection from the elements to a degree. Bofors YES was (still is) a good gun, but it seems wonder weapon like in AE just like US PT-boats and 4Es.

Also the argument by Mind Messing regarding CAP being "out of position" if the next wave arrives, this does not hold up. If 80 fighters are in the air, and 3 bombers fleeing after dropping bombs, for sure not the whole unit would pursue thsese 3 planes, but perhaps 4-5 which would be "out of position" leaving still ca. 70 for the next wave (depending on fuel of course)

RangerJoe -> RE: AAR 1944 (10/18/2020 1:16:18 PM)

The divisions could have the lighter AAA and possibly supplies but not the heavier AAA.

castor troy -> RE: AAR 1944 (10/18/2020 4:28:35 PM)

Supply is supply in the game. It's a bomb, a shell, an AA shell, a bullet, an aircraft sortie, a squad, etc. It's like Ranger said, the AA units with heavier AA guns were completely out of supply, most of the units in the stack are already fully out of supply and starving (3 or 4 already starved to death) but there must have been plenty of units with 40mm Bofors that still had at least some supply which resulted in all Bofors guns in the 1600 square mile hex firing at my bombers causing the 140+ bomber losses to flak. That's how the game works and that's how it is. Could have known better and just use one squadron to drop 6k ft to test it.

As to the AA vs the bombers, can only repeat myself, too many abstractions from real life that aren't in the code.

oh ****, first appearance of the P-47D25... not much better than the first version but way more range hence they show up over Hyderabad today... not really contesting the whole airspace in Western India but Hyderabad has to be defended to some degree as it's my major base in the region and I don't want it to be bombed to dust... what a surprise, another bad player sending in his sweep at max ceiling as he thinks that would be the best way... sarcasm off.. the Thuds dive 6 times, downing 5 of our fighters for no loss to the Thuds... what saves us here were the numbers, when the dive ended it was our fighters taking down more Thuds than we lost... in the end pretty much equal losses in that engagement due to numbers totally favouring us...

bombers from Ceylon attacking my tank rgts that are about to encircle the enemy at Poona... we moved 90 Georges to Bombay to fly LRCAP and get a nice number over our tank units but the results were pityful, it was like all of my fighters being driven off by the defensive gunners of teh 15 B-24 in the formation... am used to seeing a lot being driven off but in this case it was like 90% driven off which was odd... we lose more Georges to the B-24 gunners than they were able to down... really bad performance here, talking about the best IJNAF fighter formations we got...

when the first wave turns back to Ceylon another one shows up and the RAF Liberators' defensive armament isn't as heavy as those of the USAAF ones' so they take heavier losses than the Americans while not being able to really harm the fighters... difference is a couple of .303 Brownings instead of .50... anybody know why they changed the cal .50 to .303? For wheight reasons?

damn it, could have known that 16 P-47 is not going to be all on the sweep and this time we face 26... more P-47 at MAX altitude of course means MORE dives... this time there weren't 6 dives, but 14, result were 11 fighters shot down during the P-47 dives for NO P-47 lost... I'm not talking about damaged ones that crash later or being write offs, talking about outright kills during the air combat... so the 11 downed IJ fighters right at the start mean that this is going to be a disaster when it comes down to total K/D ratio as our fighters, despite still outnumbering the enemy 4:1 were only able to down 2 P-47 right away with a couple more being damaged...

end result was somewhere around 25 IJ fighters lost for 10 P-47, without the dive (that apparantly has no effect in the game) and the kills during it the P-47 would have lost in total kills... another 10+ fighters were downed by the B-24J...

here are today's total air losses over Western India including the usual 5 losses on ASW/nav search...

castor troy -> RE: AAR 1944 (10/18/2020 5:00:33 PM)

while I'm not enthusiastic about the Allied air offensive in Western India the Army also has good news as this time we were moving faster than the enemy and our tank rgts were able to fully encircle the enemy Army at Poona... more troops are coming in and we are planning on fully destroying the enemy at Poona as soon as they are low on supply... another unit on the road two hexes South West of Poona seems to be an armored unit as it is reported as 80 vehicles which is trying to move onto the Southern Road to Poona but we have 700 av worth of tanks in our tank rgts and most of them have been ordered to march South to engage the single unit, shouldn't have any chance to break the encirclement of the enemy...

further South at Bellary (North of Bangalore) recon reports another 42,000 troops with lots of guns and vehicles, in total 12 units... probably only 20-25,000 troops and mostly support unit, perhaps one division, doubt these units will be sufficient to break into the pocket of Poona and Ceylon doesn't seem to have lots of major combat units either... with the pocket at Jessore being safe we will move a serious amount of troops into Western India to clear this pocket within the next 4-6 weeks...

I really love India with it's huge railnetwork as it enables fast redeployments and the tank units are like wonder weapons there (way better than the real life IJA armored units ever were)... if we are able to destroy the Allied at Poona that will be another major victory on the ground as there are 100,000 Allied troops trapped now...
