I'm confused why Scout is including AOs and TKs in or near the invasion convoys.

Because they make nice targets?

One day might be a scouting error, but now this. I didn't even know you could put oilers into a Air Combat TF...I was going to check the manual.

You can't put tankers and/or oilers in an Air Combat TF. What you can do is to turn the Air Combat TF (or any TF) into an Escort TF. That Escort TF which has carriers can launch airstrikes and CAP if any carriers present can do so. What they will not do is to react. I think that I mentioned something about this previously when you were contemplating sending SCTFs against the Pearl Harbor strike force.

How do you know this stuff? I read about escort TFs in the MANUAL! and it doesn't say anything about launching air strikes or CAP. I just may make all my Air Combat TFs - Escort TFs instead. If the only difference is reacting to enemy carriers - well - so far nothing good has come of that.

I think the slower speed of the embedded AOs is a bigger negative than controlling the react with an Escort TF. I guess KB can split them (AOs) off to hunt the US CVs, but that might expose them to Lowpe's forces, like CLs/DDs from PH. If he keeps them with KB, Lowpe's CVs will have no trouble dodging KB.

I know the escort trick. I was curious if there was a support oiler trick.

thanks

tricks are exploits, better to avoid them

Lowpe -> RE: Hell Hath Frozen Over (Scout1 (J) vs Lowpe (A) (8/14/2020 3:44:27 PM)

Ok, so there is a lot going on, and I don't want to lose what is truly important to what is basically diversion:

Supplying Singapore and Palembang, building forts, and preparing for a long siege here. 3rd Cavalry with their Herrington AC are unloading at Palembang. Next off from Singers will the III Indian HQc already preparing for Palembang. Sparrow Btln is arriving from Oz. ABDA is preparing for Singers, while Malaya Army is prepping for Singers too.

I have a whole host of units preparing for Palembang and Singers, I am sure not all of them will make it there.

Supplies to China is important, and flowing nicely. Lots of ships are moving supplies towards Burma in one way or another, including a lone xakl making runs from Hong Kong. I expect Hong Kong will fall in 3 turns or so.

Wake relief is diverted a bit to avoid the KB. But all other shipping involved in Wake/Midway/Marcus are proceeding normally.

Started preparing for an invasion of Hokkaido. If I grab the southern most base, it will wipe out hundreds of resources daily...and I actually might be able to pinch the Japanese on resources eventually.

Bought out a Dutch AA unit...and a couple of British AA showed up at Cape Town. They are all going to Oz. Shipped the first fighter squadrons from California to Oz today.

Offensive moves today include another CAP Trap, I usually have very poor luck pulling these off. Marblehead and Tromp with destroyers are pulling off a Borneo coast raid...they could get pinched by the IJN Fleet Carriers, but I suspect they will be ok.

Pacific carriers are running away, CAP is set to 0 range staggered, very high, on the off chance the weakened KB gets a shot at them. I think I might have a shot at the IJN oilers if he creates two task forces and goes hunting my CVs. Low chance though.

Every Allied ship is at sea, except for ACM (and some of them are), and ships undergoing conversions or repairs. Wow, what a difference from Japan.

Those fleet oilers have a move of 5/4. Would hurt on any sprint, but not on normal movement.

It would also hurt on refueling depending upon the settings. If the entire task force refuels every day, that is at least 250 OPs points.

RangerJoe -> RE: Hell Hath Frozen Over (Scout1 (J) vs Lowpe (A) (8/14/2020 4:20:40 PM)

Do you really want to invade Hokkaido and release those emergency reinforcements so soon?

I would think that Invading the Kuriles, then Sakhalin Island would be better while developing the Kuriles and Strategic bombing the resources, oil, and factories on Hokkaido. Just leave the northern base to wither and die.

Of course, if you take Hokkaido, then you can invade Korea and try to get the Soviets activated early. [X(] Of course, you would not want that as an allied player, would you? [8|]

It would be a smash and grab to destroy the resources. And perhaps a very minor strategic bombing campaign, no longer than 2-3 days and more probably only one day.

Releasing the reinforcements is no big deal, either in consumed supplies for Japan or eventual combat.

I don't have any plans on invading Honshu, well except targets of opportunity.[;)]

Good point. I roughly counted hexes from turn to turn, and it seemed they made 15-16 hexes.

Rufe's at the start of the game? I would love to have them as IJ at the time.

Not to be too critical, but it seems your opponent is taking unnecessary loses. I know its harder when playing someone 'live', but I hope when and if I do, I do better.

rustysi, after reading your posts over the years i always assumed you had a lot of PBEM experience. I know that you have been very helpful to me. I'm just surprised you never took the plunge.

Also, just a tiny little side note, after seeing what i am seeing, i am so thankful that when Lowpe posted looking for a japanese opponent that i was already involved in two other PBEM games or i might have been foolish enough to offer. Yikes.

I'm itching to do so, but I can't due to time limitations. Thought I would once I retired, but found I've less time now. When did I ever find time to work?????[:D]

As it is, in my current AI game the last two weeks of game time has taken me about three months to complete. TBH I have been playing some other titles of late. Even got out a couple of old board games lately.

I started my new game against the AI, this scenario 2V6 and I am only up February 7th. I already sank 8 BBs plus the Repulse and I am going to work on 3 more but I only have 36 torpedoes on the Hiryu, the other three fast carriers have NO torpedoes. [:@] But maybe I will put some at 9k feet to get some big bombs going. I did get a bunch of 250 bomb hits on 2 of them last turn.

it's amazing how much knowledge of the game you've acquired despite that (or is it because of that)

seems like quite a few of the biggest contributors here have little to no PBEM experience.

Oh well, i guess that's what makes this such a great game.

I'll go back to my corner now and let Lowpe continue with his game

Thank you.

But I would blame the knowledge base on OCB plus time in a nursing home, assisted living, then a group home, hence I had little to nothing to do but heal except for the last 10 months in a Group home. But 2 years reading and playing before I started doing more things. But then, now I have an apartment that I actually should clean. [8|]

I have not done anything special or noteworthy yet.

Maybe sending the RN destroyers to Formosa and then Wenchow...but that is so minor.

You are not wrong, Rusty.

A lot of times a player plays off their own expectations and projects it.

It should have been evident in how I treated Force Z and the RN destroyers, and where Houston was attacked that I would not pull a Sir Robyn. Then, I even told him I wasn't retreating in the other thread.

Japan is hanging out way too long at invasion beaches with shipping without having complete sea and air control. Just can't do that....and you are still vulnerable to subs and sub dropped mines.

I haven't looked up the Qship that those Rufes undoubtedly were on, in Ironman they would have had some kind of naval attack plane too, plus a larger compliment.

That Q-ship would love to get into a large convoy of unescorted merchants and launch a surprise attack at close range . . . [:D]

Yes, a trap too easy to fall into.

Lowpe -> RE: Hell Hath Frozen Over (Scout1 (J) vs Lowpe (A) (8/15/2020 2:21:44 PM)

Dec 13 & 14

Marblehead and destroyers miss the IJN fleets along the coast, but Tromp does find them and lets them escape.

The Deathstar escapes from the KB...who has gone dark. Cats at Wake Island & Midway report nothing in the vicinity.

I-1 nails two small aks (transmarine) in the Pacific...and I foolishly left Rochambeau on flank...she is torpedoed off Balikpapen and tries for a two day full speed run to Soerabaja and sinks.

In other mistakes, I got Penguin to New Guinea, and then forgot about her and she steamed very close to Truk and was sunk by air power.

Another 1k supply unloads on mainland China by xakl, Hong Kong beats off the first attack (1-2) but forts are lowered by 1.

22K supply less than a day away from Singers, and the reinforcement of Palembang and Singapore is going well.

Lowpe -> RE: Hell Hath Frozen Over (Scout1 (J) vs Lowpe (A) (8/15/2020 2:28:52 PM)

Pretty much avoid all air entanglements and get some training in and some repairs.

We need to defend Rangoon as troop and supply ships arrive. Ok with losing some supply ships, but I would like the troops to arrive without losses other than plane losses.

Japan lands at Tulagi deep in the Solomons. An Australian SAG is hiding to the north, and will sortie with good intel (I have 3-4 such ploys going on, but the Australian SAG is the most powerful). If the KB heads here it could be risky.

Butchers bill for the day:

China

Going ok I think...reinforcements selectively turned on for some Base Forces which is the primary source of AA, and most US TOE Corps, will probably pick a few more elite units to get them although a lot of devices like artillery are stockpiled.
