Personally, I like to use the B-17D on ASW patrol. It would also work quite nicely on Naval Search as well.

I haven't got enough of the E model and the LB-30 is also not available in the front line units yet so I have to make use of the B-17D, otherwhise I could only field something like 40 heavy bombers at best

I agree with that against a human but I have only played against the AI. But when you do get enough of the other models, you might want to consider having a non-withdrawing 4E unit or two stay equipped with the B-17D for ASW and Naval Search for your major bases while the Flying Boats are used at the smaller bases.

Usually I just run out of them as they are needed so desperately. Playing as the Japanese I always tend to forget just how low Allied replacement rates are. The B-17 comes at 15 per month and the B-24 is not showing up soon and even when it does, a single attack into a hornets nest can still mean losing a month's replacement or more.

KB is moving around the Southern tip of Borneo coming dangerously close to Kendari... as it stands now it looks like the enemy carriers are moving to Balikpapan or going up to Luzon but that's only a guess... we still have a supply convoy unloading at Kendari, the amphib convoy has just left the base... what Mundy isn't aware of yet is the big troop convoy that is going to Manado under cover of Force Z and all my available USN carriers... a fast transport TF has unloaded a commando unit at the dot base SW of Manado and the unit marched into the base within the last two days... either the base switches sides automatically tomorrow or the ordered deliberate attack will do... with KB lurking nearby we are not going in though as I'm not up for a carrier battle...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Apr 01, 42

nothing happened...

it's looking really grim for the defenders at Clark Field, recon shows 21 more units North of Clark moving towards the base, most likely at least three more enemy divisions incoming... Mundy is going to use overwhelming force here but he trades this with gaining territory somewhere else, as for example he didn't even march towards Burma so far...

even though this attack failed again I guess the enemy wouldn't even need the reinforcements anymore that are on the way... the defenders are down to 500 av now so it's just a matter of the next two, possible three attacks to take the base... the enemy suffered horrendous losses in all those attacks though if you compare that with a siege until the supplies run out... means we will surrender on Luzon about the historical date I guess...

a small (not so) armored unit tried to establish a beachhead at Sian coming in across the river from the East... there's a bigger enemy army right behind it, 11 units reported, 60,000 men so probably something like 4 divs plus support... I'm not afraid, even if Sian is open terrain we have built forts up to six and have nearly 3000 av there, 100% prepped so that shock attack will most likely trash the attacker... we have a blocking army on the road in wooden rough terrain South of Sian, big enough to hold at least 5 enemy divisions (and I could rotate units in and out from Sian) so the enemy seems to have decided to attack the city across the river... what works at Singapore against the odd 1000 av from various units could lead to a disaster attacking against 110,000 fully supplied Chinese with 3000 av... supplied or not the Chinese are horribly weak on the offense but being fully supplied they can do pretty well on the defense, especially with the aid of good terrain or forts (preferrable both of course)...

first Lightning recons arrived at the front and started to recon Rabaul which is the only major enemy base in the SW Pacific and a torn in my flank there... no less than 61 enemy units identified there... there's alos heavy naval presence there so we have flown all available B-17 to strike the port out of the level 6 airfield of Port Moresby... due to the range there is of course no fighter cover for the bombers but recon shows "only" 60 fighters at the base and due to the fact that the enemy swept PM with two sentais of Oscars earlier I expect the opposition for the B-17 to consist of Oscars which shouldn't be much of a threat...

the B-17 strike out of Port Moresby goes in at Rabaul in bad weather unfortunately and unlike previous port strikes the hit rate isn't as high but this is also related to the fighter presence and more flak fire (which isn't as heavy as expected)... we do find the expected Oscars on CAP though both Sentais still flying the totally obsolet -Ia and -Ib models which can hardly down an Allied fighter with their armament let alone a heavy bomber so the kill rate was in favour of the bombers as we didn't lose a B-17 to the Oscars... the damage to the ships looks better on paper than it actually is, the 500lb bombs bounced off the heavy cruisers just as they did on Haruna so the only damage we did was against the freighters and transports as even Yubari's deck armor can withstand 500lb bomb hits...

last wave dropping their load leaving us with a mixed feeling about the attack... probably due to the earlier successes with B-17 port strikes we expected a better outcome, I'm unsure we even sink a merchant today and caused only minor damage to the warships at Rabaul and in total we lost 7 bombers to flak/ops... in terms of damage done/received this strike was a bad day but naval search spotted all shipping running North from Rabaul, most likely going back to Truk so strategically the day was a success as Mundy sees Rabaul as a threatend port he can't use (at least for the moment)...

enemy is pushing his troops hard at Clark but Allied troops lack numbers and combat power now and we suffer four times the destroyed combat squads than the enemy even though we could disable a good number... but also this is looking better on paper than it really is as the disablements are spread over all those units and can be recovered pretty quickly...

IIRC, the LB-30 does not have great defensive armament either. Another long range patrol aircraft rather than a bomber that can attack without escorting fighters.

Yeah but it leaves me with the primary problem of not having enough heavy bombers at all so even without any severe losses in the war so far I have to make use of both the B-17D and the two dozen LB-30.

Assumptions, I bet. In most games the Allied player does not concentrate his 4Es and tends to keep them back behind the line of advance. CT was holding them elsewhere and flew them into Kendari (?) once he knew the enemy BBs were in port at Balipapan. The BBs were easy enough to track, having limped away from a battle off Java (IIRC) and been attacked by Allied subs en-route to Balikpapan. They were already in bad shape so disbanding in the biggest IJ held port that looked safe was likely.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Clark Field finally falls to an enemy shock attack today and Allied troops suffer horrendously in the retreat... there were nearly no combat ready squads left so that combat ineffective army is now mostly destroyed... I'm all but happy about the date Clark is lost but the enemy brought so many units there was nothing more we could do, I guess I've never faced that many enemy troops in the defense of Clark... again I should have taken notes about enemy combat squads destroyed in the process as I'm sure I've also never destroyed so many enemy squads at Clark... with a short time offensive on Luzon we forced some enemy units to retreat and the enemy suffered substantial losses in the assault at Clark Field... I was really wondering why I was able to bring in so many blockade runners as I knew many were spotted but they were only attacked when KB was passing by by accident and thought it would be a big mistake by the enemy not to interdict shipping to Bataan but as it stands now all the supply we have moved in over the last months was going directly into the enemy's depots... at high times we had over 120,000 tons of supply on Luzon and there are still over 80,000 at Bataan now but the enemy will move in and just take the base in one or two attacks and not only destroy the last defenders on Luzon but also capture big amounts of supply...

I've often said that Mundy's plans perfectly matched mine, which meant a perfect outcome for us more than just once but this time our plans didn't match at all... I was expecting him to starve my troops which would take until the end of 42 given the amount of supplies we've moved in and we could occupy a good number of enemy troops keeping us in position but Mundy planned to conquer the place at all cost and just used overwhelming force in the end... the fact that he didn't bring overwhelming force to start with meant he lost way more troops than he would have had he waited for his troops from Malaya which seems to be the only thing that went wrong for him in the end, he was just a little too impatient and attacked with a too small force too early... losing Clark in early April is not to my liking...

losing Clark is one thing today, but we get a consolation prize in China as the enemy army shock attacks into Sian coming from the plains in the East... guess the enemy expected a river crossing like at Singapore where you can move in at acceptable losses usually but at Sian we didn't have just 1000 av in all kind of units like at Singapore but nearly 3000 av in fully prepped and fully supplied Chinese Corpses... the enemy army is totally trashed establishing a beachhead and the Chinese will counter attack tomorrow... I have no doubt we will be able to force the enemy out of the hex again which means we have a fair chance to more or less destroy an IJA Army as we will then try to pursue them and repeatadly try to force them to retreat... the enemy even got a (-) for supply which was a little surprising to me...

the ordered attack at Sian and it goes perfectly well, our troops being 100% prepped for the base get a really nice adjusted av for Chinese units and easily force the enemy army to retreat... 100 combat squads destroyed yesterday followed by over 600 in the retreat today, that's going to hurt these enemy units and our army is in full pursue now as I doubt the enemy has much combat power left to withstand our attacks...

enemy invasion coming in at Semarang (Java) and the covering force runs into the minefield there... nice to see a mine hit on a CA which most likely means yard time and a DD that might be in sinking condition...

another division thrown onto Java to break the defense at Malang... I wouldn't have unloaded here, I would have just brought everything to Batavia to unload 100% safe there and rail down to Soerabaja or any base next to it would Soerabaja be defended... all but the static units on Java have been moved to Malang, Soerabaja is defended by some 100 av which will also move to Malang as soon as the enemy shows up...

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid detected at 32 NM, estimated altitude 10,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 20 minutes

Allied aircraft

Allied aircraft losses

Japanese Ships
xAK Awajisan Maru, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
xAK Gosei Maru, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
BB Kirishima, Torpedo hits 1
BB Kongo, Torpedo hits 2, on fire

that's the reason why I wouldn't landed at Semarang, a base that is in range of torpedo carrying biplanes that have wrecked parts of the IJN in the past already... the enemy has no fighter cover and our biplanes come in without escorts but that doesn't matter and they sink two empty freighters and hit the enemy BBs three times...

Aircraft Attacking:
12 x Vildebeest III launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Mk XII Torpedo

way too many bombers attack freighters... Java could become the grave of the IJN's BBs as the biplanes played a big role in the sinking of at least three BBs already...

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x Vildebeest III launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Mk XII Torpedo

Allied aircraft losses
Swordfish I: 1 damaged
Swordfish I: 3 destroyed by flak

Japanese Ships
BB Kirishima
BB Kongo, on fire

OUCH! While the Vildebeests scored perfectly and didn't really suffer from flakfire this wave of Swordfish was extremely decimated by flak and I couldn't believe my eyes... checked the stats of the Swordfish just to find out it has a durability so bad you could probably take it down with snowballs... the Vildebeest in comparison is way more durable... 50% of the Swordfish in this strike were shot down even before they could launch their torps...

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x Swordfish I launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Mk XII Torpedo

what is still flyable in the afternoon attacks again but the bombers focus mostly freighters which is really a shame...

Allied aircraft losses
Vildebeest III: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
CA Mikuma
xAP Atsuta Maru

last remaining bombers miss which leaves us with two freighters sunk and one damaged but also two damaged BBs... I was asking Mundy why he repeatadly moves within strike range of my biplane torpedo bombers and got the reply that he didn't expect them to hit anything as he never gets them to work... while they are mostly useless right at the start of hostilities when most Allied commanders send them in we kept them back until we had perfectly trained crews available as all our bomber pilots have 70 torp skill which makes them absolutely deadly against freighters or BBs that haven't got decent fighter cover...

I didn't like minewarfare in WITP but I don't like it in AE either... mine rates have been changed to minimal numbers but the ability to clear mines hasn't been changed... it wasn't working well in WITP, might have been better to take it out completely then...
