BigJ62 -> RE: Our Ages..... (11/2/2006 3:55:38 AM)

Perpetually 39(actually 42), played Tactics II, Squad Leader + the next two modules, Coral Sea Campaigns or something, VG:Vietnam, there was one game about modern day east-west Berlin and the Soviets and a few others I can't remember.

RevRick -> RE: Our Ages..... (11/2/2006 4:05:37 AM)

Okay, I'll up. I'm 57 and began wargaming on AH DDay 1960 when I was 11/12 - I got it for my 12th birthday. Got serious out of the NAV and began on France '40, Bismarck, and then got into the original Squad Leader before we found Wooden Ships, Iron Men. We still drag that game out and play it, although we have to consult the rules more often because of BAM (Biologically Aging Memory) Clutter.

That is close. Your work most be somewhere near Marlborough?

If you'd ever be interested in some old-fashioned, head-to-head, boardgaming let me know. I think all I have left is ASL & Flat-Top, but those were both classics.

I had a lot of fun with that. I don't recall for sure if that was the first wargame I ever played, but certainly the first naval wargame. I always sank it & Prinz Eugen both, but I only played it head-to-head, with a pro-British bias. [:)]

Hmmm.... I didn't realize that your brain had gone so far as to prevent the use of simple math! [:'(]

ChezDaJez -> RE: Our Ages..... (11/2/2006 8:37:47 AM)

I'm 52 and my first wargame was AH's Battle of the Bulge in the late 60's followed by a whole slew of AH boardgames. First computer wargame was Guadalcanal Campaign played on the Apple IIe (Motorola 6502 8mhz processor, 128K RAM and twin 143K floppy drives... computing at its finest!).

I just happened to live 3 blocks from SSI at the time and would run down there to pick up the latest release. Even became a playtester for them (6-Gun Shootout and Rings of Zelfin... both duds!) for a short time. They wouldn't let me playtest wargames so I quit playtesting. I think at one point I had every SSI wargame for the IIe.

BigJ62 -> RE: Our Ages..... (11/2/2006 10:40:46 AM)

Before I got a C64 I bought a computerized version of AH's Squad Leader on cassette tape but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the computer or who made it. AH was king back then with their board games, didn't they put out a magazine as well? I seem to recall getting one from AH or from some company about strategy and tactics.

Przemcio231 -> RE: Our Ages..... (11/2/2006 10:48:55 AM)

Well im 24[:D] (what a nice Age) i started wargaming when i was like 8 or something my cousing from US brought up his ATARI 800 XE with 5 something Disc Drive and ton's of Game's[:D] his parents gave me the computer as they were leaving so i just sit in front of my Telly and tryed one game at a time... unitl i lunched "Crusade In Europe" off course all of those games were pirate copys so no manual and the game required to input a password from it[:@][:@] if you guesed wrong the game played all by itself... i got totaly frustrated and hell i watched a show about Overloard so i typed it in and guess what it was correct!!!! Hurray[:D] leater i guessed another ones like Market-Garden... few week's later i bought a polish PC magazine and all the password's were in it[:D] ( in early 90's nobody here cared about copyrights and such[:D][:D] you could leagaly buy pirate software in normal stores ) and my first boardgame was "Bulge 1944" made by polish company named Dragoon it was simple quick to play but not to well balanced[:D]

Ursa MAior -> RE: Our Ages..... (11/2/2006 12:27:44 PM)

Whoa. Turning 35 I have not had this feeling since ages, being among the youngsters that is.

I started wargmes, in 1985 when we recieved our first computer a C64. Living behind the Iron Curtain it was fun to play Raid Over Moscow (although not a wargame) in front of my classmates, coming from commie families (sort of dragging a lion's moustache).
My fav at the time was Battles of Napoleon, then Storm Across Europe. Later when we bought our first PC in 1992 Carriers at War, War In Russia, Civilization and Panzer General ruled.

Since AH boardgames were next to impossible to get (we did not even know that such company exists) we played a lot with a hungarian wargame Called Struggle For Europe, which was a largely simplified offspring of AH's Third Reich.

Przemcio231 -> RE: Our Ages..... (11/2/2006 1:07:38 PM)

Raid Over Moscow[:D][:D][:D] Geee i remember that game it was fun to play... or the Theather Europe a strategy in with you could nuke any city in Europe

Monter_Trismegistos -> RE: Our Ages..... (11/2/2006 3:27:34 PM)

Przem, do you know that you and I (25) are amongs the youngest users here? I think we are 5th/6th youngest :P We should talk to those guys using words like Sire.

BTW, game was named Ardennes '44, it was also my first war boardgame (first ever was a copy of Talisman) - and contrary to you I think it was balanced as hell - every time I played it result was draw or Germans winning by single point.

RUPD3658 -> RE: Our Ages..... (11/2/2006 3:40:31 PM)

Brady -> RE: Our Ages..... (11/2/2006 5:42:48 PM)

38 Now....Show's just how great this game is, were still hear pissing and moaning about it after all this time[:)]

Przemcio231 -> RE: Our Ages..... (11/2/2006 6:13:50 PM)

Well for me the system sucked as only attacker suffered losses and the defender could lose anything only if surrunded[:D] and the Rule "Germans win if any non-Arty unit crosses the Mouse" was rediculus[:D] Geee i know that we are ones of the youngest here[:D] Cheez i wounder if i will be still playing those games when i will be 40 or something[:D][:D]

I jealous - I only had 64k on my apple. Came with 48k, had to buy a 16k card to get to 64k.

Ah. I played that too.

How about Kampfgruppe?

Nikademus -> RE: Our Ages..... (11/2/2006 7:00:32 PM)

one of my all time favorites, despite my disapointment to find that while the game claimed to fight battles down to the specific tank, in reality it was platoon level combat (and even then abstracted via math)

Course the real game killer was the no stack rule.....the AI attacked the same way every time.....one small colored square leading your way like a UFO.....hence one fought squares most of the time, not the neat tank graphics.
