ORIGINAL: mbMike I would consider myself an intermediate wargamer. I played Steel Panthers until the harddrive it was on burned up. Is this going to be too hard to pick up? I never played UV. Also, how long should I expect to play a fairly competative battle against the AI on the ultra long full campaign? If I played 5 hours a week, would I ever finish the game? Thanks! Yes and no. If you start up the game and try to jump into the full campaign never having played UV, forget about it. If however, you start the game and use the tutorial to get used to the system, and then start out by playing the Coral Sea scenario, moving after that to one of the 2-6 month limited map scenarios, you will be able to learn the system and have a lot of fun in the process. After you've done that, and then maybe played the first 100 days scenario, you'll be ready to play the campaign. By that point, you will probably have already gotten your money's worth in terms of fun and play value. Then you can decide if you have the time and interest in playing the full campaign. By using the Auto-Convoy system you can reduce your logistical overhead. A lot of the game can be micro-managed, but it doesn't have to be, and especially against the AI there is no need to concern yourself with a lot of this unless/until you want to. If I was new to UV/WitP, this is how I would approach it. Obviously I'd like you to buy WitP. As an intermediate wargamer, you certainly have the ability to learn the game system. If you are interested in combined land/naval/air operations, you will enjoy the game. I would not recommend this game to a beginning wargamer (unless they promised to follow the tutorial and play the smaller scenarios until they had started winning at these). Just don't expect to be able to play the whole war without taking the time to learn the system first. Hopefully some of the testers can chime in and give you their opinions. They may have a different take on it. As for the time issue, testers could maybe give you a better sense of this. Depends a lot on how much micro management you want to do. Frag played the first 3-6 months of the game against the AI in what seemed to be several days of intense playing. You might be able to play the historical war (44+ months) in around 400 hours once you know the system (faster or slower depending on your play style and speed of computer). As the Japanese things would be slow at first and then speed up as your choices were limited (assuming history). As the Allies, it would be fast at first and would slow down as your units increased with the Allied build up. I bet someone will finish a campaign in 200 hours, and someone will spend 1000+ hours playing one. Hope this helps. I forgot to mention that this game can be addictive. If you like it, which the odds are you will, you will find that you want to play more than 5 hours a week. That I can practically guarantee. I feel responsible to provide this truth in adverstising disclaimer.
