mbMike -> Will WitP intimidate me? (6/23/2004 8:07:11 PM)

I would consider myself an intermediate wargamer. I played Steel Panthers until the harddrive it was on burned up. Is this going to be too hard to pick up? I never played UV.

Also, how long should I expect to play a fairly competative battle against the AI on the ultra long full campaign? If I played 5 hours a week, would I ever finish the game?

Thanks!

6am in the morning, as opposed to 6 am in the afternoon?
That's what playing in different time zones does to you.[X(]

Are you comparing the Atari to the toilet on a ship? My first computer was an Atari 800 and, as I sit here right now, I have an Atari 800 emulator on my coumputer just one click away. Too bad we can't emulate the joysticks too.

Yes and no. If you start up the game and try to jump into the full campaign never having played UV, forget about it. If however, you start the game and use the tutorial to get used to the system, and then start out by playing the Coral Sea scenario, moving after that to one of the 2-6 month limited map scenarios, you will be able to learn the system and have a lot of fun in the process. After you've done that, and then maybe played the first 100 days scenario, you'll be ready to play the campaign. By that point, you will probably have already gotten your money's worth in terms of fun and play value. Then you can decide if you have the time and interest in playing the full campaign. By using the Auto-Convoy system you can reduce your logistical overhead. A lot of the game can be micro-managed, but it doesn't have to be, and especially against the AI there is no need to concern yourself with a lot of this unless/until you want to. If I was new to UV/WitP, this is how I would approach it.

Obviously I'd like you to buy WitP. As an intermediate wargamer, you certainly have the ability to learn the game system. If you are interested in combined land/naval/air operations, you will enjoy the game. I would not recommend this game to a beginning wargamer (unless they promised to follow the tutorial and play the smaller scenarios until they had started winning at these). Just don't expect to be able to play the whole war without taking the time to learn the system first. Hopefully some of the testers can chime in and give you their opinions. They may have a different take on it.

As for the time issue, testers could maybe give you a better sense of this. Depends a lot on how much micro management you want to do. Frag played the first 3-6 months of the game against the AI in what seemed to be several days of intense playing. You might be able to play the historical war (44+ months) in around 400 hours once you know the system (faster or slower depending on your play style and speed of computer). As the Japanese things would be slow at first and then speed up as your choices were limited (assuming history). As the Allies, it would be fast at first and would slow down as your units increased with the Allied build up. I bet someone will finish a campaign in 200 hours, and someone will spend 1000+ hours playing one. Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention that this game can be addictive. If you like it, which the odds are you will, you will find that you want to play more than 5 hours a week. That I can practically guarantee. I feel responsible to provide this truth in adverstising disclaimer.

Nikademus -> RE: Will WitP intimidate me? (6/23/2004 10:28:42 PM)

i took it seriously enough even if my answer was with my toungue stuck a little in my cheek. Any casual research into this game will quickly reveal to the party involved that it is a large wargame, covering a very large war to a very large degree of detail.

I think any intelligent person can put 2 and 2 together from that point on. (Translation: this game will require a large # of hours to play unless you are loading one of the smaller scenerios)

Stavka_lite -> RE: Will WitP intimidate me? (6/23/2004 11:33:19 PM)

This sounds like sound advice for even a seasoned Grog. I have not played UV, much to my chagrin for not having found it sooner. After reading the AARs from the testors I do not plan on even looking at the Japanese Turn 1 in the Campaign for at least 2-3 months and I cringe[X(] at the unknowns that surround Nippon's industry, for now[:D].

Thanks for the good advice[&o]

Nikademus -> RE: Will WitP intimidate me? (6/23/2004 11:37:28 PM)

do the tutorial, then try one of the small scnerios

I recommend either

Coral Sea

or

Marianas

**

Both are very small with short time frames. Coral Sea would be good to move from the Tutorial as the Marianas scenerio does have ALOT of units to push around if you are playing Allied at least.

But you dont have to worry about production or have to navigate around the entire Pacific Map. Both play fairly quickly

kaleun -> RE: Will WitP intimidate me? (6/23/2004 11:38:11 PM)

Ditto. I'll try a few short scenarios, on each side, but only a few, experimental turns, before attempting anything.

Nikademus -> RE: Will WitP intimidate me? (6/23/2004 11:46:02 PM)

since this has been "Sticky'd" it should probably be mentioned in case anyone missed it that there is also a full "UV" type campaign scenerio too......so even if your not UV-savey, the game does offer small and medium scenerios as well as the grand whammy campaign.

Beauty of the medium (and small) scenerios is that you dont have to worry nearly as much about logistics and production. The latter is off and for the former.....like in "UV" your entry bases (+ others possibly) get a set amount of fuel and supply per turn.

As an old Pac War player of both the original and the Matrix upgrade who is in only his second UV campaign, I have some advice on playing your full WitP campaign. First become completely familiar with the game system by following the advice of the previous posters. When you think you are ready for the full campaign don't start at the beginning but start with a very late scenario like 1944 so you have an idea where you should be when you get to that point in the war. Play out that scenario to see how the game ends. This will teach you things that you will need to know without having to play 1000 hours to find out. Once you have seen the end of the war you are ready to begin at my favorite start date, Aug 1942. Play the Aug 1942 scenario out to the start date of the last scenario but only finish if you really want to. Now you are ready to start the game from 7 Dec 1941 but just remember that the battle of Midway will not occur as it did historically if at all. With all this playing time (about 1000 hours) you will have some of the experience of the thousands of real experts who actually directed the war. I don't have WitP so my advice only comes from playing Pac War but it is only by playing the game that you will learn things that were known by the leaders from that war that you are representing.

kaleun -> RE: Will WitP intimidate me? (6/24/2004 12:45:00 AM)

Beg to differ sir.
Try a few short scenarios, then chose your side, and go all out for the big one.
Neither Nimitz nor Yamamoto knew in Dec 41, what 44 would look like. It might not be the best campaign playable, but it will be more interesting.[X(]

Grotius -> RE: Will WitP intimidate me? (6/24/2004 12:51:39 AM)

mbMike, I hope you give it a go. Hehe, it will be a bit overwhelming at first: you've got a huge map, the logistics, the fog of war, production, hundreds of ships and planes and land combat units, and a big sense of "what do I do first?" But if WiTP is anything like UV, you won't regret taking the plunge. UV is my favorite computer wargame.

Others have already given you sensible advice: do the Coral Sea scenario, start small, avoid worrying about logistics at first, etc. I'd add just one thing: ask questions on this forum -- nonstop if you have to! These guys repeatedly came to my rescue when I was first learning UV.

I wish you posted that with UV, I've been playing an average of 2 hours a day for last two years now. Now you offer a stronger drug. I hope you guys are planning on opening up a treatment center soon, for those of us that have very low will power.

My wife claims that this addition is just as bad as my addition to the firehouse. Any firefighters out know what I mean.

THANKS Joel

serious reply
First, play UV. You get a nice game which works, has been patched up, has quite a large community to play pbem, and most of all a game which gives you an idea about what this game system is all about. The number of planes, troops and ships can be handled after a short while, since they are not THAT big, although the detail level is quite high. The battlefield is small compared to WITP standards, and can therefore be handled after only a short period of time (regarding supply, esspecially).
If you like UV, you will most probably want to get WITP. If you don't like it that much, you still have a game you might play sometimes without loosing faith, time or interest.
WITP is a monster. As the japanese, you not only have the burden of handling your troops but to handle production and resources too. Since i am not a tester, i cannot tell you what to expect. lets just say that experienced testers need about 12 hours for the japanese first turn with about 30 minutes for the following turns. in UV, you might need 30-60 minutes for turn one, handling some of the further turns in about 10 seconds-5 minutes. The difference is obvious.
I like UV. It is the kind of game i have been searching for for the last 4 years. Since i like it, i will get WITP. But before handling this monster, try the smaller version first, which of course could be one of the smaller scenarios in WITP too.
