This is a good thread, but the fact remains

Not all of us can get the download
Just what is an acceptable period of time to get a simple CD sent from the USA to another country
We have now well passed the acceptable time frame
I used to recieve mail from home anywhere in the world faster than this in my navy days.

Matrix, I am sure many, many @#@#$%# many of us are staring to feel really ripped off and very annoyed at how long it is taking to get something we paid for
The cost, who cares, its the greatest value for money game in the world, BUT NOT UNTIL I ACTUALLY CAN PLAY IT.

GRRRRRRR

The manual that you get with the DD, and on the backup CD you can order now, is a PDF version that you can read on the computer or print out yourself. Because it is so large, one option, if you have a CD burner, is to copy the manual onto a CD, and take it to a local printshop (we used Kinkos/Fed Ex, but I don't know whether they have them in Britain). For $10 we got a printed and bound manual. Otherwise we would have gone through 2 or 3 $30 printer cartridges. It is nice to have a printed manual that you can annotate and look at while you are in the middle of a turn.

You will all probably hate me for this, but I've gotta share - I took the PDF to my local Staples for printing and binding (around $12 b&w). I thought a color manual would be cool, but was quickly dissuaded from that when they told me it would cost around $200 [X(] When I went back later to pick it up, they handed me my b&w manual and mentioned that they had mis-read the order and had printed a color one first and would I also like to have the color one for free since it was their mistake? Oh yeah, AND my wife had a $10 off printing coupon for Staples she gave me too. So the final tally for one bound b&w manual AND one bound color manual was less than $5 including tax. Life is good...[:)]

... I guess this debate is not worthy a reply from a Matrix staff... or why haven't we heard anything untill now... is it only me or does it seems that a great game will underachieve with sold copies due to lack of logistics ...

HannoMeier -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/22/2004 8:30:49 PM)

I will wait for the boxed version, even if I am tempted to buy the digital download now. It should have been made availible sooner.

If you enjoy MASSIVE logistic and scale games then WitP is what you want, it is worth it. If you are a First Person Shooter player or Starcraft/Lords or the Realm/Warcraft Gamer you will not care for this one. If you are unsure if you want to get WitP pick up a copy of Uncommon Valor. It is less expensive; I bet you can get it used on Amazon.com or Ebay for less than 20 dollars US. It will give you a good taste of what WitP is. As for no box, who cares. The Manual is GIANT. It would cost more than 80 dollars for Matrix to print a copy for each game. As it is now I printed the 220 pages in BW and put it in a 3 ring binder. After I bought the ream of pre-punched paper and the three ring binder it cost me 15 dollars for the whole thing. Oh I also printed out all of the COLOR maps that are on the CD. I don't keep the boxes anymore. I found they were just getting in the way.

If you like the TAOW or other strategy games you will like WitP. If you ever played Squad Leader, Panzer Leader, Dawn Patrol or any of the other Avalon Hill type games this is for you.

UB

EDIT, Dang Spel Check changed TAOW to TOAW!

But it SHOULD be TOAW shouldn't it?

Arnir -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/22/2004 8:52:25 PM)

According to the rumor mill (only use that term because my invitation to Matrix's board meetings has not yet been received) WitP is not attractive to game retailers. It costs too much for spur of the moment purchasers. Retail distribution takes a huge bite out of the profit margin and can even result in a loss per unit. This is a niche product. If WitP suddenly became a Tickle Me Elmo (or whatever) must have product you could probably by it at your local grocery store but that isn't going to happen.

IIRC, this was also talked about quite a bit before the game was released.

UncleBuck -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/22/2004 8:57:50 PM)

Yes it should be. Hangs head in shame. Need more coffee. Maybe I could hook up one of our IV pumps to keep a steady supply......

hithere -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/22/2004 9:06:07 PM)

Well..the only reason i saw it was because a friend of mine used to give me a hard time making it TAOW all the time. [:)]

Yes, thats the key Id say....there is no way you could put this, or almost any game on the shelf for $70 without causing an uproar and considerably hurting sales. The max price for a game in store is probably what, $50, and on top of that the companies who actually put it on the shelves would take a cut as well as the stores selling them. Also, if its on shelves many people would purchase it there as opposed to the direct download option which of course save the price of the box and CD, printing, etc.

Basically its all about dollars, but what the hell, they are a business. [8D]

For those of us who're waiting for the boxed version, you guys think there's any change Matrix might make the manual available for download for free?

MadDawg -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (7/23/2004 12:00:18 AM)

Tim, this was already asked before release and the answer from Matrix was no unfortunately.

afspret -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (8/8/2004 1:38:07 PM)

I'd still like some sort of official release date for the "pretty boxed" version as I'm one of those stuck with a dial up modem with an iffy connection. I recall seeing somewhere in a post above it will be available in "a few weeks", a firm date would be nice (not to mention good customer service).

CatLord -> RE: When will finally be possible to buy boxed version? (8/8/2004 3:36:40 PM)

I want a nice box too.

When, when, when, when... [:(]

In a civilized country like Canada, DSL or Cable is the norm, not the exception.

Many of you poor people that live in backwards, underdeveloped countries - like the U.S. - still have to use dial-up?

You have my pity.

[:'(]

On a serious note, I had no problems with the download.
Unfortunately, I do have a problem with the font, but that is another matter.

And has been stated, war games are a niche market. A 'monster game' like WitP is a niche of a niche. I would be very surprised if any retailers ever carried it. Ordering a CD online, or via DL, is probably the only way a game like WitP would be distributed.

Just remember which civilized country this game comes from....[:D]

Don't you think this digital download and CD on demand is proving to be a clumsy affair. Many of UV and WitP fans doesn't have fast enough connection or their credit card and as for CD on demand; we can see complaints that even inside the US it takes more than two weeks to get it (if you get it at all).. better not to mention Europe or Australia...[sm=crazy.gif]

So I'm asking when will I be finally able to go to the store and buy a nice boxed version, the old fashioned way (with all the goodies included, hopefully) as I'm getting really frustrated...[sm=00000018.gif]... just reading posts from the lucky ones that already have their copy...is it really so much trouble to ship a few boxes overseas..

A few answers. The basic concept of "DD" and "CD on demand" / "Box on demand" is the only way for us to stay in business or to do niche wargames. So we have a few possibilities here. Stay with it, pack our stuff and get another job, or only produce mainstream titles, so the "normal" retail way is financially reasonable. Weīre running a business here after all [;)]

Digital River had problems in the beginning, but all of the "CD on demand" that were ordererd actually left the facillities. Digital River is currently investigating where the problem was with the shipment of the CDs.

However, we sorted these problems out with them and itīs by far not the "majority" of customers that had this problems. Just from counting the support emails we got itīs save to say the percentage is below 1-3 %. Please remember, satiesfied customers that get their CDs within a few days are not going to post this on a forum, customers that have a problem definetly do this [;)]

What makes you believe the Cd on demand situation was worse overseas (Europe etc.) ?
