PzB74 -> Balikpapan falls! (8/13/2006 2:14:57 PM)

The last air effort against the enemy fleet at Balikpapan is mostly frustrated by piecemeal
attacks that are all shot down by the CAP. Some kamis get through and sink a landing craft
and damages a transport. Very limited results for the loss of some 30-40 Zekes.

I am moving interceptors to the key bases in the region: Soerabaja, Palembang and Brunei.
Once again the training camps in China are receiving raw recruits. We have to train a new cadre
while the enemy secures his hold of the southern SRA.

Even Andy must take a break from further offensive actions now: his carriers have been operating
non-stop since the abortive Marianas campaign. Hopefully he will take a somewhat realistic course of
action and secure a more soild supply line before he pushes on.

The output of Nakajima engines has been increased again - an effort to secure a bigger pool of reserve
engines. Research on the Reppu is also increased while construction of most cargo and troop ships is halted.

Balikpapan falls!

When the enemy ships leaves the area I will try to harass them with subs, mines, kamikaze and surface fleets.
Enemy supply convoys of Northern PNG are also priority targets. It can't be easy to move supplies and fuel through this narrow corridor.
A kamikaze put a fuel tanker ablaze today and several cruisers and naval bombers are operation out of Palau.

PzB74 -> RE: Balikpapan falls! (8/13/2006 5:02:54 PM)

As a curiosity: I saved 2 George, 2 Frank and 1 Zeke group from destruction at Balikpapan using the following method after all their ac and pilots

were stranded; A single George/Frank/Zeke fragment was moved to Balikpapan and disbanded into the stranded units. This allowed 1 ac of the mother

group to be safely moved out. When Andy captured Balikpapan and destroyed the damaged ac there the pilots were re-united with the mother group

This is a good way to save valuable air groups from destruction - kinda unfortunate that all excess pilots stay with damage ac. Should be possible to transfer

them...somewhere

Attaching an overview of recent air losses. This is what the loss list has looked like over the last week or so. Very disheartening and I try not to keep count.

Will do my outmost to train my pilots and only committ the best units enmasse in future battles. They get chewed up so easily by the bloody A2A combat and

enemy bombardments.

List of total air losses:

Enemy Hellcat losses have been especially heavy: This indiactes how hard Andy has driven his carriers in an attempt to
crush my defenses outside his LBA zone of controll. I agree that he should have been allowed more of them and pilots...still
he should maybe have noticed this deficit before his pools were empty!?-)

Not trying to accuse Andy or something[:)], but i've noticed that he is very careless and devil may care about ac in our game too, very early in the game and more than once:

Yes, I've noticed Pauk...probably that's why he was the right guy to take over after Nomad [8|]
Still, the public on the home front in the US would have been rebellious [;)]

Here is what the Combined Fleet got left:
Ships in brackets (-) indicate number of damaged vessels (>20 sys damage).

So we should be able to put some 400 ac on carriers and sortie 4 battle fleets as well as a cruiser and destroyer squadron.
Thinking of resting and fixing these ships to 100% shape and save them for when Andy push towards the Home Islands.

The troops that landed at Samarinda would not have been sufficient to
prevent reinforcements from reaching Balikpapan. Think I suggested a while back that
troops should be given a chance to fight their way in and out of areas contested by enemy troops.

Perhaps I should attempt a counter-attack to beat back the enemy troops at Samarinda and buy some
time? 447 assault points vs 87 should be enough to force a retreat.

Speedysteve -> RE: Balikpapan falls! (8/13/2006 11:46:47 PM)

Could try John.

What are your supply levels and disruption/morale like with those Samrainda troops? Watch out for his armour though........

PzB74 -> RE: Balikpapan falls! (8/13/2006 11:51:40 PM)

You're right Speedy, his armour will most likely kill my troops. With 425 assault points and 7 forts it will take
Andy some time and effort to capture the place. Better not whittle away our strength on futile counters.

You finished your personal agenda against Pauk San? [:D]

Speedysteve -> RE: Balikpapan falls! (8/13/2006 11:54:27 PM)

Could work though John. Is he capping Samarinda? Could you bomb the hell out of his armour on the same turn you attack? If he's duisrupted and you're not and you're well supplied it could work.

My fear is this - if you sit tight he will take Samarinda in time anyway. If you attack BUT you fail you will quicken the demise of Samarinda.

Pauk - LOL. I enjoy our banter. In time when we have enough free time we'll test our mettle at PBEM[:)]

Page 100! Amazing read, PzB, thank you for sharing this epic game with us. I'm reading this AAR every day, but haven't posted here so far - I'm very new to WitP and don't think I can give you advice that you don't know already. [:)]

Good luck for the coming battles!

Fishbed -> RE: Balikpapan falls! (8/14/2006 12:54:20 PM)

THE DIRE AND SAD TRUTH ABOUT PZB

For weeks thousand people cry everyday wandering on this topic full of blood and tears, desperate about the unbalanced fight we're witnessing. But now that Ive got the real data, I'm quite disappointed by PzB's behaviour [:-]
For months he tried to hide the truth from us, and his plot utterly failed - a trojan horse just sent me the actual situation of japanese aircraft R&D and ship schedule from his savegame, and I can tell you he's just trying to move us with so-called defeat in order to increase the hits on his topic. Will you dare to silence me to hide this too, PzB? [8|]

Now tell me if THIS looks that desperate to you?! [:o][8|]

[image]http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/1924/pzbrdop8.jpg[/image]

Ever wondered why PzB never scrolls his screenshots to the bottom? Now you know what he was trying to conceal!

There's a bug about the TIE Advanced anyway, I just checked the data - they're supposed to upgrade to "Vought F4UD Corsair", but how the hell are we supposed to build them? Must be a database bug from the stock game I suppose, even if it sounds logical. [&:]

The Minuteman issue is interesting, never witnessed them in action yet. Can you tell us if they can be converted to Kamikaze units?

[image]http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/7410/renfortseh3.jpg[/image]

As you see many new units will soon join the Kaigun, even though most of them will spawn in places quite far away from the current SRA front line. Hyperdrives should help to get them quickly together in position though.
Unfortunately, I suppose Macross was overrun by Allied troops long time ago already, right? [:(]

btw about the DSII controversy thing I agree on your decision to halt it. It was probably a little gamey to launch it as it wasn't completed IRL, was it? Maybe you should ask Andy about that...

A last question about the leaders - is Capt Harlock available too? What are his statistics? Should be a good Surface Combat commander me thinks, may get useful later... [8D]

Anyway now PzB will have hardly any excuse to lose the fight since we know the reality of Japanese reinforcements. I'd bet even P-47 don't fly high enough to intercept kami TIE Advanced! [&o]

I have no clue about how many different persons are reading this AAR - guess we'll never know!-)

A break today, got a migraine at work and isn't feeling at top of the world tonight [:'(]
Will be back with more in a day or two.

The reason for playing late 1944 as Japan is to delay the enemy and hold on for as long as possible.
A bit difficult to play defensively and knock ones head against the Uber CAP and deep penetrations...
Will try to adapt, but in my mind the best defensive is a good offensive [;)]

PzB74 -> RE: Balikpapan falls! (8/15/2006 12:53:26 AM)

Since the secret is out...here is the commander of the new Imperial Fleet:
Grand Admiral Thrawn from the Unknown Regions of the Empire [&o]

A consummate strategist, Grand Admiral Thrawn likenes combat to art, and is an aficionado of both.
He can cite inspirations, analyze motives and determine outcomes before his opponents have even
consciously began formulating a move.

The ones from the last production batch do fly when air-launched if I remember well. Just ask a Betty to take it afly - well two betties maybe, or a little more... [:D]
Anyway they don't even require a pilot, they have dummy-plugs - nice for the pool isn't it? [:'(]

Grand-Admiral Thrawn is a nice Tanaka and Yamamoto mix. And like the latter, he could be vainquished only by treachery [:o]

Honestly two days ago when I was about to sleep, I just thought for an hour about what could be done with WitP when it comes to Star Wars. I just considered for a second a SW mod - the system is not that bad actually and would allow nice prospects [:D]
On a new map, big space-ocean hex, planet-islands, Empire playing japanese, with factories to look after, ship production and, and Rebel scum playing allies with some on-map and some "smuggly" off-map - but very limited - production. Conversion of ships on Mon Calamari yards, CD playing planetarian defense, managing commanders with outstanding stats, proton torpedoes and space bombs, Death Star building, 0 hex range tie fighters... Well one can dream, but I think about that, it always look quite sexy [;)] [:D]

Przemcio231 -> RE: Balikpapan falls! (8/15/2006 4:02:56 PM)

[:D]Well that could be interesting[:D]

PzB74 -> The Hand of Thrawn! (8/15/2006 8:51:07 PM)

Rejoice, the enemy is hit hard in the flank!

Under the leadership of a new and mysterious Admiral a formation of cruisers
intercepts an enemy convoy in the open ocean and damage or sink 6 ships.

In the afternoon naval bombers hit the enemy convoy again, 9 enemy vessels are
hit and sunk - fuel cargo's are ablaze as the sun sets and Andy's fleet will remain thirsty! [;)]

Our new tactics will involve hitting the enemy's long and vulnerable supply lines. Slowly we will
force Andy to expend time and units to protect his supply train. In the meanwhile our interceptors
units receive new and more...advanced units!-)

Our 'harvest' is bringing in large number of resources and oil and tomorrow numerous ground units
will arrive. Half a Bde will be released from China tomorrow, and this crack unit will be sent to the SRA.
30k troops will join them and block the way for the enemy.

Nikademus -> RE: The Hand of Thrawn! (8/15/2006 8:52:36 PM)

Only Thrawn could pull that off....

But can he counter the Allied wall o CAP!??

PzB74 -> RE: The Hand of Thrawn! (8/15/2006 8:53:02 PM)

I expect 10 divisions and a bde to arrive tomorrow! [8D]

PzB74 -> RE: The Hand of Thrawn! (8/15/2006 8:55:19 PM)

The enemy wall of CAP will eventually turn into a house of cards as their supply lines are cut off [:-]

Fishbed -> RE: The Hand of Thrawn! (8/15/2006 8:55:49 PM)

That's Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice but well too bad the cruisers didn't manage to do much more harm.
Add a dozen more tankers and oil may become a problem!

And anyway beware Rogue Squadron Grand Admiral, since they converted from X-Wing to Corsair, we don't stand a chance in dogfight [;)]

Strange that people stopped complaining about that.

PzB74 -> RE: The Hand of Thrawn! (8/15/2006 9:49:31 PM)

It was a night fight, very confusing with enemy ships darting everywhere...so I think it's ok!
The main goal was to make the enemy's supply lines unsecure - and I think we just did [8D]

Andy is an extremely competent Warlord, I suspect his only weakness is his supply train.
He may loose interest in the minute aspects of the game involving large number of ships and subs.
So we will fade away from his monster CAP and re-group behind the lines and only committ when
surprise and numbers can be achieved.

Thx for the support guys, time to play hide and seek! [;)]

I hope you have enough manpower and armaments to cover that. They won't do you much good at 1/3 strength.
