One strikes just above the waterline, with the charge punching through the other side of the hull before detonating, causing little damage to the ship, and the other Ohka narrowly missed (collecting the Stanly's ensign!) and crashed into the sea. One Betty returns. April 14 1945 — Seven Bettys attack the US Fleet off Okinawa. None return. None of the Ohkas appear to have been launched. April 16 1945 — Six Bettys attack the US Fleet off Okinawa. Two return, but no Ohkas hit their targets. April 28 1945 — Four Bettys attack the US Fleet off Okinawa at night. One returns. No hits. May 4 1945 — Seven Bettys attack the US Fleet off Okinawa. One Ohka hits the bridge of Shea, causing extensive damage and casualties. Vessel judged beyond repair. Gayety is also damaged by a near-miss by an Ohka. One Betty returns. May 11 1945 — Four Bettys attack the US Fleet off Okinawa. Hugh W. Hadley is hit, suffers extensive damage and flooding. Vessel judged beyond repair. May 25 1945 — Eleven Bettys attack the US Fleet off Okinawa. Bad weather forces most of the aircraft to turn back, and none of the others score hits. June 22 1945 — Six Bettys attack the US Fleet off Okinawa. Two return, but no hits were scored.

Good point from PicketLine. The problems with this approach are: 1. Allied players may bitch about the fact that an Ohka will do massive flooding damage to their ships ( as it would be like being hit by 2 or 3 Long Lances) a la torpedoes. 2.By making it a torpedo you lose the ability to have the G4M2es achieve hits while doing naval search missions ( as bombers carrying torpedoes don't get opportunistic hits, they have to be carrying only bombs or PGMs). It is a good thought though and one which mod creators are going to have to weigh up.

Looking at the results quoted above you can see that the Ohka has a hit % of roughly 20% once launched. When it hit DDs, DEs or transports ( or even near-missed them) it seems to have resulted in either total destruction or sufficiently heavy damage to force retirement but when it hit a BB on the turret the turret armour saved the BB from significant damage. Still though one simply has to look at the numbers. If an 800 Kg AP bomb can seriously damage a BB then an Ohka certainly can. Fortunately for the Americans no Ohka ever hit the tower or superstructure of a BB. I would suggest that if you analyse the Ohka attacks you will conclude that once launched within range of an American TF they had a roughly 20% chance of scoring a devastating hit ( sinking or extremely heavily damaging) on a CL or lighter and the same chance of scoring hit which would cause moderate damage to a BB or CA ( assuming it didn't just hit one of the turrets which is heavily protected). Given the sort of hit rate and damage potential being generated by the Oscars, Vals and Kates being pressed into service as kamikaze aircraft AND the fact that the escorting fighters would have to cover the G4M2es for a shorter period of time than if escorting Oscars, Vals and Kates all the way to the enemy TF I think that the Ohka was potentially a very effective weapon... The problem was they didn't have sufficient numbers of experienced pilots to properly protect the bombers to their launch points. When you are losing half of the bombers ( on average) every time they sortie and are only managing to launch ohkas a minority of the time you have a situation in which no weapons system was going to be effective. Change those two variables and a 20% hit rate with a massive warhead and increased survivability vis a vis FlAK has the potential to be a weapon with real impact.

Interesting stats! [:)] I don't think anyone expects the Ohka to be a war winning weapon, it can however cause serious damage to ships without CAP. Against carrier TFs they require a really heavy escort - especially with the current A2A model used in stock. I think the Ohka would be comparable to the German radio controlled bombs, and they seriously damaged the battleship Warspite and sank the surrendering italian battleship Roma. Ohka's can not be 'jammed' by radio either. Changing the Ohka into a long range torpedo sounds like a usable solution to me. There are too few of them to be used efficiently as patrol bombers. That sortie limit of only 10% should also be removed and a production run of Ohka missiles created instead. When no Ohkas are available a G4M2e should launch standad torpedoes or bombs.

The first capital ship to be lost to a guided munition attack was the 45,000 tonne Vittorio Veneto class battleship RN Roma, which burned and sank after being hit by two PC1400X Fritz X radio-controlled glidebombs on the 9th September, 1943. The weapons were delivered by II/KG100 flying Do-217K-2 bombers from Istres in France, with the strike credited to Major Benhard Jopp, Luftwaffe. This attack killed 1352 personnel, including Admiral Carlo Bergamini, Chief of Naval Staff of the RN (RN). This is one of the reasons I removed the Ohka and added the SD-1400 and Hs-293 to the Empires Ablaze mod. In order to balance things a little I only made them available to a particular variant of the Me-264 but in my testing I have found that the SD-1400 is absolutely devastating. It will reliably sink any CV and any non-BB warship. Against older BBs it is highly effective but some of the mid to late-war BBs are proof to the SD 1400s although they still tend to cause so much fire and system damage that they make these BBs easy prey for Japanese torpedo bombers. As a test I sent 100 Me-264Bs ( each carrying 8 SD-1400s) out on a strike against an Allied CV TF comprising 4 x Essex class CVs, 2 BBs, 2 CAs and a gaggle of DDs. Allied CAP comprised Hellcats and Corsairs but the escort of 200 Shindens neutralised the 300 enemy planes flying CAP quite handily. In a series of several tests I reliably managed to destroy 2 of the CVs, 1 CA and a couple of DDs over the course of 2 to 3 days with the enemy BBs being quite heavily damaged but always surviving. If the CAP wasn't neutralised then results went down and as a rule of thumb I found that it cost 100 Me 264s to destroy one Allied CV. Is that worth it? Well, that's up to the players involved. I doubt that any hundred bomber strike from currently extant Japanese planes would achieve similar results. Of note: I wasn't able to get the SD-1400 accuracy up to historical standards so compensated for this by increasing the number carried. So, if one gets half the hit rate one would normally expect one just doubles the number carried.

Read the link I attached with the picture of the Roma! The guided bombs penetrated into the guts of the ship and set of her ammo. Exploded and broke in two, don't think there were much time to escape. Ironic that one of the best attacks with guided bombs was against the poor Italians.... The Taiho Raider Group got away with it. Moving back to the Home Islands: I need to rebuild the Fleet and these ships are vital to this effort. Give me a few months and we should be ready again. My guess is that Allied sigint indicated that XX Div was loaded/loading at port so and so. Don't know if it gives a destination but its enough information to put his forces where they can interdict. Also Allied sigint might also say XX Div is prepping for XX,YY. If he knows where XX Div is currently, he can look at a map and see if it involves sea transport. The rest is simple. Usually allied sig int will say something like XX Div is loaded on AP Yakumpucky Maru, headed for YY destination. If you've kept track of your sig int sightings (sometime earlier it would have said XX Div is located at Saigon, or some such), then you have a chance at intercepting the enemy. Yeah, Chez, I do try to keep track of my sig int sightings. [:)]

Andy said he was after a tanker convoy? Closest tankers is an empty convoy that was at Singapore yesterday. This was a horrible day! Everything was a worst case scenario. I should have scouted the South China Sea with more patrol ships before sending over the convoy. Strange that I didn't see the carriers. I may have missed them. Must be an awful series of unfortunate events that brought the enemy ships in such perfect ambush positions. Our airfields in Indochina were bombed into the ground as well. I am spending more and more time on each time and with me moving to a new apartment next week I may not have time to continue playing even 1 turn pr day. Enemy Superforts and carriers are causing so much damage to ships and ac that I spend some 1-2 hours on 1 turn plus another 30-40 min on the AAR. Have to cut down as more important events in RL are demanding attention. Defenses in Burma and Indochina have been organized and I will bring in reinforcements by air now as the sea lanes have become so dangerous. The only good thing is that the enemy is fighting in Burma and this is pretty far away from the Home Islands! The 200 Superforts operating out of Wake together with 200 4Es on Marcus are more than enough to suppress the Bonins. We have so many troops and supplies in place that it will take 6 months for Andy to get anywhere. Will continue to pour in troops and supplies. New Kwantung Divisions arrived: Some in China but most in Japan...strange since I can't move them to China without changing them to another HQ (not China). It only cost some 200 points to release these small divisions and I will use them to reinforce the Bonins, PI and Formosa. Should allow me to replace the men lost at sea at least. Imagine what he11 this game would have been with the British also in the fight...it's more than bad to fight only the Americans in 1945 and they really got more than enough hardware to do whatever they want. The ONLY reason Andy had problems with Iwo and Bonins is that he went in with ONLY his carriers and with completely insufficient long range bomber support. Now that he has it he will easily attrit Iwo and Bonins. The Allied player DOES have enough to crush Japan in 44 and 45. he just doesn't have enough in ONLY his naval air arm to do so... this is as it should be.

I read both AARs (which is why I never say too much..dont trust my own mouth) but the only thing I will add is that reading Andys AAR it looked just like coincidence. His movements into the area etc were mentioned a few turns before... Anyway, that blow hurt but I have every confidence you will recover. I thought you were in big trouble at Iwo a while back but you turned that into an impressive (though ultimately temporary) victory. Good luck!

Yes, I'm afraid it was one of those most unfortunate events that happends in war - especially when the enemy enjoys full supremacy in the air and on the sea! [:(] We always find ways to improvise our way out of difficulties and Andy has still not gotten anything for free in this war [8D] Appreciate the support Vetamur - and everyone else! We won't be broken easily and I'm confident that we can deny the Bonins to the enemy for a long long time to come. If he really wants one or both of the islands we will make it so costly for him that he regrets that he ever set foot on imperial soil [:-] No time for turn today, moving week and I'm pre-occupied by a thousand things. Zeke, Oscar, Tony, Frances and Betty pools are empty but we're producing 600 Zekes, 200 Tony 100, 130 Frances, 280 Oscars, 220 Bettys, 500 Franks, 220 Jacks each month. Still got plenty Jacks, Franks and George fighters in the pools. This production capacity makes it possible to replace most ac losses, even though pilot quality suffers. We can keep this up for the remainder of the war if Andy isn't allowed to bomb our industry into the dust. The Shinden will prevent that from mid 45, so I'm vastly confident [8D] It IS not always too interesting to fight a defensive war when the enemy is on the offensive all over the map. Will do good with a little break from WitP this week! Might pop in with the occasional turn though and throw another spanner into Andy's machinery!

More losses in ships and men - but cadre units from the convoy has been landed and 8 it looks like 8 transports may get away. I discovered that quite few units that were evacuated from Borneo have been rebuilt at Soerabaja, this base had over 1100 AP. Moving 600 AP to Batavia and flying them to Indochina and Burma instead. This together with reinforcements from Miri will replace the troops from the lost convoy. Andy's carriers gave chase after the Taiho raiding group all the way towards Northern Japan. He didn't manage to overtake though and our ships are safe. Iwo has 112k supplies and 20k unloading. Boning holds 77k and more are enroute. Seems like the enemy will use only heavy bombers to suppress us in the time to come, allowing us to keep supply levels up and bring in more troops. Rebuilding of Air Force and Navy well under way. Upgraded the first Sentai with the Ki-100 Tony! Got several hundred short legged Ki-60's to upgrade, so it's a good thing even though the top speed isn't very high. Now there are only 3 designs left to research: 1. Zeke A6M8 - not much of an upgrade really 2. Reppu - should be a good ac, but I don't have many units that upgrades to it! 3.
