Didn't HMCS Protecteur (should be spelled Protector) have to cut short a Gulf deployment a few years back because half the crew "were expecting?" Pretty sad. Now if we could just pass a law about flatulence! [:D] I kid, I'd be fined so bad I'd be in debtors prison! A lot of people are always talking about their own rights, but forget that other people have rights as well. The crux of rights discussions is where your rights end, and my rights begin. Its something that I notice a lot of political extremists (both on the right and the left) in the US and Canada seem to forget. Although in general I understand your complaint. As Canadians we tend to be too nice. And often the government - doesn't matter if its PC, NDP, or Liberal - tend to muck about too much in business that they shouldn't be involved in. Anyway. I'm hijaking the topic here. I agree, warships should have 'poetic' names, or good martial sounding names (so naming after Military leaders or famous battles is good). Cities and states (provinces) are good to, because these are ships of your country. But some bloody politician? Yuck. USS Ronald Regan. Good grief. Oh here's one for you, from politicians, to media! USS Bart Simpson USS Angelina Jole USS Leonardo di Caprio <BANG>

The USS Essex also has a namestake from UK-US wars, she was captured by the RN and turned into a convict ship. IIRC she was armed with powerful, but short ranged, cannons. The RN ship that captured her kept out of her range and pounded her until she lowered her flag. I guess as a CV she didn't need to be worried by being outranged by surface ships.

Being a 23 year submariner, I still cringe thinking that we missed such a great opp to return to our heritage and name the new class of fast attacks after fish! Perhaps starting with the top five sub aces of the war and work from there. Instead we get VIRGINIA... no offense to that great state, but it's just not right!!! On the other hand I just got orders to a ship who's name sake epitomizes the American Fighting Spirit ...USS THE SULLIVANS DDG 68

Not that a really dislike JFK as President (lousy personal life, but as Democratic Presidents go, really one of the best), nor do I question his service to his country or his courage . . . but . . . That was really some trick getting a 80ft 38ton PT Boat rammed by a 378ft 2100ton destroyer. A corageous man, but not necessarily the greatest PT-Boat skipper of all time. Actually, President Kennedy probably said it best when asked how he became a war hero: "It was absolutely involuntary; they sank my boat."

Well How many generals of the USA were SUPREME Commanders of all allied forces Europe? If Ike were just a mere general of his time I can see the point but he was the ultimate commander in europe basically, while his being president might also have come in play he was the Allied commander who won in europe.

Laws on smoking indoors are good, I always got out of house as a boy, while my aunt wasn't allowed to smoke in the house on visits she sure stank of smoke and I'm allergic.. Smoking/non-smoking areas never were workable in places either, air circulates, the smoke could still affect people also there were always people who would ignore signs and sit and eat and smoke in non-smoking areas. In USa Smoking really never has been a "right" and I think sometimes people think too many things are a "right" But lets get back to carriers... I do Shudder if ever we start to name ships after Corporations etc....

The Tin Can Navy's heritage is just as rich as our submarine heritage!! I'm looking forward to the challenge! Besides, I'm all for anything that hunts the "BAD GUYS" submarines regardless of platform or warefare community. Hell, if the Marines ever figure out a way to take out a KILO running on batteries, I'll give them a healthy ooh-raw and join on up!! [;)]

In general, naming things, like ships, airports, roads, parks, etc. is IMHO ass kissing and brown nosing. The individual you name things after should be at least one generation, if not more say 50 years dead to properly determine how "great" that person actually was. Before that it's just party politics and repayment of favors. Like Minetta Airport - who is the current Secretary of Transportation - every time I land there I think "Bunch of Brown Nosers."

Hummm Editor... look up Japan and US businesses and all anf hummm Rename ships to like USS Dupont, USS Standard Oil USS Sears Roebuck [:D] Ja[an.... humm harder ... would need look up 40's japanese business names.. Might be an interesting scenario....

I believe Halyburton and Roberts were the only 2 FFG deployed to 2nd Gulf War )(Halyburton was from Texas but he was Corpsman KIA and MOH winner)(Frank Fahrion was a WW2 Admiral)
