I have no idea how many times I've seen that film, but it's A LOT. I tried to find a pic of James Earl Jones' character in it; then we could talk about actors who looked VERY young.

Terminus -> RE: Steam Kettle fixin' to boil over (9/23/2005 11:56:08 AM)

One last post about Dr. Strangelove, and then I'll quit highjacking the thread.

My personal favourite among the acting performances in the film is Sterling Hayden's General Jack D. Ripper. He has the true psychopath bit down cold.

He's able to sit very calmly and quietly and discuss his theory with Peter Sellers' Group Captain Mandrake, and then later stand up and spray bullets at the oncoming US troops, along with exhortations for them to attack harder. Awesome!

"I do not avoid women, Mandrake, but I deny them my essence".

Mark VII -> Dr Strangelove (9/23/2005 5:32:39 PM)

Truely a great movie down to Slim Pickens riding the bomb down like it is a bull at a rodeo.[&o][&o][&o] And then Dr Stangelove talking about the type of people(women) that will be needed for the years of hiding underground in the fall out shelters.[sm=00000280.gif]

Mark VII -> RE: Steam Kettle fixin' to boil over (9/23/2005 5:46:09 PM)

There are many more which I probably should not post. Here is another. Speaking as a Japanese player, you Aussies should not trust the Yanks. The fact that they want your women is well known, what else do they want?

Cap Mandrake -> Sacrifice (9/25/2005 2:57:24 AM)

quote:

A plan to reinforce and resupply Port Moresby turned into a major Donneybrook. Two squadrons of Marine F4F's and an understrength squadron of USAAF P-40B's deployed to PM in advance of the arrival of at least 25 AK's, AP's and support ships to deliver engineers, a full-strength Australian Inf Brig., AAA units and supply to PM. Lae was in Japanese hands but not ready for action. Both Wewak and Rabaul were in an advanced state of preparation. All of the Japanese CV's had disappeared after the evacuation of Malaya had begun. Were the Japanese carriers headed to Malaya to stop the slaughter of Japanese aircraft on the airfields in Malaya? In any event, the resupply must take place if Port Moresby is to be held.

Naturally, the approach of 20+ transports was sure to attract some attention. It did. Dozens of Bettys flung themseleves at the transports. Wildcats and P-40's and Betty bombers and more than a few Zeros fell from the sky, but the transports were realtively untouched. Dozens more Zeros joined the fight. Fighter sweeps of 40+ Zeros destroyed half the Allied fighters. By the 13th, the AP's were all unloaded and all the US fighters were withdrawn. There was nothing but bad weather and AAA to protect the last few AK's.

Then the Hiryu and Soryu showed up.

Dickie Chapelle was, despite her goofy name, one of the first female war correspondents and quite an interesting character. She was killed by a Viet Cong booby trap in 1965

What version are you guys using?

treespider -> RE: Ghosts (10/1/2005 7:37:33 PM)

That was outstanding! Glad you could keep a sense of humor about the whole mess! I couldn't.

jwilkerson -> RE: Ghosts (10/1/2005 8:14:33 PM)

Oops,

This is almost certainly a CHS issue ... as we "borrowed" a old ANZAC HQ to become the new India HQ ...

Is there any HQ on New Britain where these India troops are appearing ? If not then it may somehow be a "hardcoded" issue .. but if there is an HQ there .. which one !!! Exactly what is in the hex where the Indian troops are appearing ... thanks.

Tom Hunter -> RE: Ghosts (10/1/2005 9:26:51 PM)

jwilkerson

We are playing straight 1.6.2 on the standard map. I am not sure if anyone has CHS loaded on their machine. Both sides have seen units teleport, but I don't think either side has actually lost the unit. In this case the Indian's are SE Asia HQ, they loaded ship from Diamond Harbor to Akyab. The first turn they unloaded at Akayb they vanished, and we found them stacked with the survivors of the Rabaul Garrison one hex NE of Gasmata. The next day a fragment of the same Brigade unloaded into Akyab where it remains.

This does not affect the war very much at all since I have plenty of troops in India. At Gasmata it will mess the Japanese up a bit because they only sent 700 guys to take the place, and the 1200 Aussie troops are about to be joined by 3 times that many Indians. But Gasmata is really low on supply so in the great scheme of the war it really won't matter either.
