Andy Mac -> RE: Trouble (1/18/2008 3:10:11 PM)

I jusr re read the thread and one thing that struck me hard was the fact that even with Pauk quiet in late 42/early 43 I was not willing to attack for two main reasons.

1. Respawning carriers if I lost one in late 42 it was going to be mid 44 before I got the replacement so de facto I 'lost' 4 carriers due in 43 that would have allowed me tha ability to take losses.

i.e. had I known I was gettign 4 Essex class in 43 instead of respawns I would have attacked earlier becaus the loss of a couple of carriers would not have stopped a 43 offensive.

2. Wildcats and my belief that they could not protect my fleet from Zeros in game.

Andy Mac -> RE: Trouble (1/18/2008 3:18:08 PM)

Another thing that struck me is a a Japanese player that is patient and sits back and does not try the risky overstretch attack that wastes pilots and ships but concentrates on defence and building forts and maintains a fleet in being is a dammed hard player to beat.

PZB attacked, counter attacked and then attacked some more but it cost him ships and planes even when he won - it succeeded to some extent but it was more risky than Pauks approach.

(Arguably I am just a **** player like trollelite says !!)

But I think the two players with different styles contrast nicely (PDU makes the games slightly incomparable)

PZB's constant counter attacks gave me heart failure more than once but ultimately it cost him the fleet in being.
Pauk sitting back and playing defence preserving his assets waiting for the attack was equally nasty.

Two excellent players different styles but overall of the two I would rather attack the one that takes risks, I would rather be attacked by the one that doesn't

Interesting dichotomy

yeah it seems that you should save your counter attacks for when they really matter if you don't have everything already prepositioned for a massive counter strike then just let it go.

PzB74 -> RE: Trouble (1/19/2008 4:03:51 PM)

It's just silly to call a player you've never played before for $hitty.
I'm pretty sure that Andy can play stand his own against most player on this forum.
In both matches against me and Pauk he's taken on more than the usual challenge:

Against me: Taking over an already lost game (in regards to points) were the English are all but out of the war.
Against Pauk: Playing with PDU on.

I agree that I played very aggressive in defense, but I've stated all along that I would play a game following the
Bushido spirit. Defense is really not an option when a good offense is possible [8D] Somehow it seems like I had
spent most of my luck by the time Andy took over the game, I never really got 'lucky' afterwards. No doubt Pauk played
a better defense that I did - never seen anyone hold off the Allies that long and well before in 1944! When Andy starts his next AE AAR I'll know were to put my stakes...

Still, I had my fun until the last half of 44! I bet Hitler also got his kicks from his last Ardenner offensive.
It may have shortened the war for some weeks...but not attacking would have meant admitting defeat -> Not an option.
He was looking for the one great victory that would allow him to negotiate some kind of settlement with the west - not matter how far fetched this may have been by then.

Andy Mac -> RE: Trouble (1/19/2008 7:34:10 PM)

Oh as I said you gave me heart failure a few times and I think you lost your luck I use the example of Bankok every time I attacked a fort level went down

Contrast that with Mandalay where I couldnt get a break [:D][:D]

What goes around comes around.

I would not have wanted to try a deep attack against you like I did at Iwo or even PI or Malaya for that matter had you had KB intact.

And as for counterattacks one word Zamboanga !!!

When the allied offensive to the PI was stalled and defeated as I over extended....

Andy

Andy Mac -> RE: Trouble (1/19/2008 7:42:05 PM)

p.s. games turn on such a few things.

I will pick 2 things that changed the course of games.

1. Against PZB when Operation Hydra was in its early stages off Aitape and Dagua my carriers were low on Ops points and I thought KB was miles away but I turned the carriers back more or less on a whim to cover the invasion - KB was defeated allowing the extended Hydra offensive to continue that ended up in Malaya  - that was a decisive moment.

2. Against Pauk in off of Wake a LR Betty spotted my Carriers 1 or 2 days early - had I managed 1 possibly 2 more days movement Pauk would have failed to stop the invasion but Pauk was willing to keep LR Betties on naval attack despitre the risk of the Wake fighter trap.

1. was pure luck on my part 2. was pure bad luck without the luck anbd the random the game would be sooo boring [:D][:D]

Andy Mac -> Update (2/9/2008 4:13:30 PM)

OK guys I think you are all aware the game is back on and Pauk although he is refusing to do AAR is happy for me to keep on updating.

We have done about 2 weeks worth of turns since my last update and war is progressing.

Heavy fighting in China I am determined to reopen Changsa and am throwing all my LR Fighters into the fight including the 1st operational P51 sqn and two Black Widow units.

I have to confess I have been fixated on the Marianas and the massive battle to come. The break has allowed me to rethink some things and I am reconsidering next moves including some that have been advised in this thread earlier.

Hornet and Colorado are still repairing and I await the next tranche of carriers due in 15 - 20 days before my next attack.

Fighter Sqn xp is improving using the Training Mission at 50% seems perfectly adequate for raising xp up to c 50xp I dont know what everyone is concerned about ok it doesnt give you elite pilots but its perfectly ok for gettign trained ones

Andy Mac -> RE: Update (2/9/2008 4:20:11 PM)

Nothing much to say I will update on my fleet status in a few days I am ignoring what has went before and will deal with what I face now its time to take back the centre..... <almost>

Andy Mac -> RE: Update (2/9/2008 8:03:47 PM)

OK I made a fundamental mistake in strategy I think we all realise that now.

Shutting down SWPAC was a total cockup and strategically a mistake. I dont have the forces in theatre to reopen it but I am in the process of scraping up some forces to try and get somewhere....

A few NZ Bdes, a couple of Aus Militia Bdes and a US Cav Regt are all I have available and very few ships but I am going to try and use these force to break through the New Britain blockage.

This force is a pure diversion but I may as well try it on.

Elsewhere I am sooo close to being ready to attack all I need is a few more weeks.......

Andy Mac -> RE: Update (2/15/2008 2:56:25 PM)

OK Pauk has finally made a mistake....

He left Green Island and it looks like Kavieng empty of troops both lvl 4 AF's so USMC Paras landed last night and siezed Green Island which will allow me to perhaps take Rabaul even with the pathetic numbers of troops left in theatre.

If I take those bases then thats a few more AF's in range of places like Truk and perhaps even the Marianas.

Lets see what happens

Andy Mac -> RE: Update (2/17/2008 2:06:18 PM)

Well its going well on a shoestring.

Australian Cavalry, NZ Militia and a few USMC Paratroopers have siezed most of New Britain Buka, Buin and it looks like Rabaul will fall as well - I may even manage to take Kavieng - This is a result because that means a few more lvl 5 AF's in range of the Marianas which menas more B29's supporting the fleet when they go in .

Its simply a little bit of opportunism as all I have is a reinforced Division in theatre but still its going well.

In better news Chengtu is finally open its cost me but its open....

160 P47's flew in last night and will fight the air battle tomorrow from Chinese bases - this could get interesting

Allied forces CAPTURE Buin base !!!

Andy Mac -> Rabaul falls (2/17/2008 9:07:30 PM)

Rabaul falls to the Australian and NZ militia.

Actually in terms of risk/reward this is good - I suspect this is Pauk drawing in his perimeter but even so surrendering a base like Rabaul this cheaply is difficult to imagine.

My forces in the Easr are almost ready in 22 days I get two more carriers and then we are good

In the west I have 3 Fresh Divs assembling and Pauk has reduced his lines.

This means the path to Malaya is now open and a real overland assault can commence.

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/18/2008 12:46:20 AM)

I am getting so impatient I need to calm down and wait for another 3 weeks until my next 2 Essex Class Arrive and not go in piecemeal again....

On balance there are three active theatres.

East
West and South

South is a shoe string if I can manage to take Kavieng as well then that is a seriously good result for a tiny investment.

East is the main attack all my forces are concentrating there.

West with the reopening of the land route to Malaya I will abandon ideas of a risky invasion and just brute force my way south into Malaya and retake Singapore mile by mile.

It will be a brutal slogging match but it can be done

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/18/2008 11:53:11 PM)

Not a lot to say really two more days more of the same I just need to wait.....

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/19/2008 12:32:34 AM)

Over 50 Carriers 15 Battleships and a lot of other forces are assembling.....this is gonna get interesting

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/19/2008 1:06:36 AM)

9 CV's (2 to arrive)
4 CVL's
43 CVE's
16 BB's
45 Cruisers
107 DD's

Thats the force that is to go in and destroy KB.

And as for pilot XP who says the training command doesnot work

Andy

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/22/2008 12:28:05 AM)

9 days to go until the last of my carriers arrive......

9 days until Armageddon begins to saddle up and head West !!!!

Major battles over Chengtu but the AF is still open and Pauk is losing A LOT of Franks....

Attritional battles in China are my friends hopefully gives the Marianas a glass jaw.....

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/23/2008 4:49:00 PM)

Not a lot to say.....

Pauk has given up on Chengtu.

6th US Army is assembling at Songkia about 3,000 AV will drive south - 14th British Army is digging in in the north and south to try and shield the army driving on Malaya.

In the East 7 days until Yorktown II arrives and 14 until Bonnehomme Richard is en route. Colorado is almost fully repaired and my forces are very soon going to be launching the attack to relieve Tinian

In the south Gambia is spearheading the attack on New Britain.

Andy

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/24/2008 2:37:12 PM)

OK it has begun....

The transport and replenishment TF's have started to load up

200,000 fresh soldiers lots of supplies etc in 5 massive TF's

The fighting ships will wait a few more days in total there will be

16 BB's, 11 CV's, 4 CVL's, 34 CVE's, 33 Cruisers and over 90 Destroyers with the main fleet

Another 9 CVE's and 8 CA's and about 50 DD's cover the invasion TF's

I am intending to seek out and destroy KB before committing to close action on the invasion beaches.

90 Submarines are assembeled at Wake Island and will also be sortieing to interdict the Marianas shortly.

This time no mistakes....

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/24/2008 11:59:56 PM)

Some of the TF's are en route assembling the full might of the allied fleet off Midway.

4 Carrier TF's and 1 Battleship TF is en route the others are awaiting components to arrive at Pearl before setting off.

A large supply convoy has arrived at Rabaul and B29's will shortly rebase thataway

Andy

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/25/2008 12:01:27 AM)

p.s. over 100 subs will now be moving into sweep Marianas

veji1 -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/25/2008 2:01:10 PM)

This is going to be big...

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/25/2008 3:22:23 PM)

My standard carrier TF is 1 CV, 4 CVE's or CVL, 1 CA, CLAA, 1, CL and 6 DD's I have 9 of these and one with 2 CV's and one BB

BB TF's are 3 BB's and 6 DD's I have 5 of them

I am going through the subs picking the most agressive and high naval CO's to the best xp boats

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/25/2008 4:55:22 PM)

The reason for the fleet mix above is I want to have all my TF's have the same speed - this is about seeking a decisive battle and finishing the job once and for all

The main force will have 36 Escort Carrier average 27 aircraft, 11 Fleet Carriers (average 90) and 4 CVLS's average 30

In total c 2,100 aircraft of which 2/3 are Fighters or FB's.

This could well be the bigest CAP ever seen....

I actually think its unlikely that Pauk will bring KB out to fight he will try to fight it out with LBA, mines and CD guns.

I have a number of plans to deal with them but my losses to mines are going to be heavy.

I actually have no idea how to sweep mines guarded by CD guns without getting my TF's crucified so that will be a challenge.

The butcher will have his price and we shall pay it.

My record is 51 /100 ships sank on day 1 when I attacked Rabaul against PZB anyone want a wager as to how many of my lead TF I lose to mines ?

Potentially stupid question:

Does putting one older CA in your MSW task force to "draw fire" work.

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/25/2008 5:48:40 PM)

Short answer is no but I have a new cunning plan to resolve this issue.

I have a 100 ship TF with 30 AK's of supply, 45 LCI (G), (R) and (M) and 2 CA's and a few DE's and 20 MSW's I will also put in an old BB.

This TF will go in first and attempt to clear the mines draw fire from the CD guns

you can stay one hex away of the base to sweep mines. If being under you Cap umbrella you should be save...

Andy Mac -> RE: Rabaul falls (2/25/2008 7:02:42 PM)

Doesnt that result in the CD guns decimating the MSW's ?

Andy
