Andy Mac -> RE: A lucky escape (1/25/2006 9:34:54 PM)

4 main theatres in operation at the moment

1. China after my mistake and lucky escape its going quiet. My attempted raid on Hong Kong was a fiasco and the B17's got caught onm the ground so I have withdrawn them.

2. Gilberts Hornet is escorting in 25000 men for the final assault and garrison on Tarawa the BB's go in again tonight to prep the way.

3. Perth Pauk is in trouble and doesnt even realise it !!!!. Thats two attacks in aq row that have failed to lower the forts my troops are 100% prepped and without air or BB support im not sure he can take the place. Aus Command is now in range and about 30% prepped for Perth adding to my fighting qualities. (A Command HQ with a good leader makes a huge difference to the fighting ability of troops!!!!). I am attacking his blocking force but it wont shift because it has no where to retreat to. 6th Aus Cav Bde is trying to clear the rail line

I was initially dissapointed when he hit Perth as I had 300,000 tonnes of supply stockpiled there which I thought he would capture But actually what its doing is keeping my troops at 100% ready to fight and my men get stronger every day as 4th USMC recieves reinforcements. Of course a 3rd wave could arrive any day to make my predictions worthless.

4. North Australia I dont like all the attention Derby is getting. A few weeks ago I sent 1st Aus Corps to the North Coast (this was my primary reserve) I was going to send them to Perth but given the fighting qualities of my troops in that besieged city I think I will hold them closer to the North Coast to cover Darwin/Derby.

Perth cannot be it ? That cannot be the only offensive Pauk was going to launch no moves to PM or New Cal and I am making progress in the Gilberts....no move towards Akyab or India its weird Perth cannot be it ...... can it ?

I am paying particular attention to my South and East Coast defences in Australia and to NZ's North Island

My Sigint is useless again but he has to strike soon the Zero bonus is soon to end .

<Late Edit Pauk is a skilled opponent and has caused me major problems especially in the 1st phase but I just don't understand why he is letting me get ashore in strength in the Gilberts if I take Tarawa then CENTPAC could be a major headache in 2 months time>

Andy Mac -> RE: A lucky escape (1/26/2006 3:29:38 PM)

Hmmm Derby gets a lot more attention.

I am gettign slightly concerned about the total lack of reaction from Pauk in the Gilberts.

He cannot be that strapped for units that he isnt reinforcing and if he is where are the rest of his forces is he really going to let me secure Tarawa ?

Andy Mac -> RE: A lucky escape (1/27/2006 2:12:01 PM)

Hmmmm the inability of my forces to clear a passage through to Perth is gettign annoying the unit just wont retreat despite multiple attacks at greater than 5:1 so my relieving force cannot force a way through.

Tarawa goes well.

Pauk undoubtadley won the 1st stage after his incredible job in SRA and Burma but this phase appears to be more even

Andy

String -> RE: Oh Crap !!! (1/28/2006 12:31:53 PM)

methinks you stuck your neck out a bit too far a bit too early.

Andy Mac -> RE: Oh Crap !!! (1/28/2006 12:39:47 PM)

Hehe na he was so committed to Perth and by the looks of it north Aus that I had to do something !!!

He wont be able to retake Tarawa I have 2 Divs ashore at Tarawa and plenty of LBA to bring in when my AF's get built and the hex is mined.

Overall it can only be baby KB plus the 2 slow CV's and with the force committed in Aus I just dont see him having the combat power to take tarawa off of me.

The gilberts are only an over reach if I lose my US CV's in 2 more months I will have 6 USN CV's and 2 RN CV's (with Seafires) now as long as that force is intact he doesnt have that much of a chance of taking the Gilberts from me.

We are in May 42 it will take months for him to redeploy out of Australia.

I think he has made a mistake getting overcommitted to a sideshow even if he does take perth and the whole of North Australia.

But time will tell. The zero bonus is gone and I have 70 fresh fighters on Tarawa

Sneer -> RE: Oh Crap !!! (1/28/2006 12:44:01 PM)

it was a nice move with tarawa
congrats

Andy Mac -> RE: Oh Crap !!! (1/29/2006 5:06:41 PM)

Perth falls and the whole force and 200k of supplies surrenders.

(OK I am going to gripe a little now about LC mechanics it will be my only whinge on the subject but I have to get it off my chest or else I will explode !!!!

When Pauk invaded Perth he also landed at a non base hex to cutr off my reinforcements - fair enough when I stalled him at Perth I gave myself time to get sufficient forces to meet and defeat his blocking force force but because he didnt have control of the hex at Perth his troops had no where to retreat to despite my getting 6:1 and 4:1 so they basically just stayed in place and refused to be moved I am pissed because I was not able to clear the road 40,000 men and an irreplaceable Div surrendered before I could amass PP's to change HQ and evac a cadre despite my Cavelrymen defeating the force he had in place)

OK sorry about that had to get my fury out in the open. Not Pauks issue he played very well.

Another para raid on Yenen Im happy for the Jap paras to play in China where they cannot really hurt me.

Andy Mac -> RE: Oh Crap !!! (1/29/2006 7:40:37 PM)

Looks like his North Aus strategy is working.

He has landed over 100k troops at Derby and given that he may land elewhere on the coast I am moving a US Div and elements of a NZ Cav Div as well.

I need more troops to cover the coast.

I will try to hold onto Tarawa but will need naval forces in Aus so I need to be carefull not to get lots of units written off.

Andy

Sneer -> RE: Oh Crap !!! (1/29/2006 8:40:30 PM)

you can't rout unit which can't retreat - no matter the odds - I suffer from this in my PBEM too

Andy Mac -> RE: Oh Crap !!! (1/29/2006 10:37:10 PM)

Derby falls and my troops retreat East thank god.

1st Aus Corps was caught on the wrong side of Derby and is now between Derby and Perth which is unfortunate

27th US Div is on its way to Brisbane and I will probably need at least one more Div to be safe.

The big question is do I defend Darwin or not.

If he drives East from Derby it is probably not worth it as its to east to cut off and I would rather save the troops for the industrial heartland.

Andy Mac -> RE: Oh Crap !!! (2/2/2006 12:32:01 AM)

Not a lot to say another heavy raid on Tarawa I am withdrawing my bombers as they have no chance of launching from a lvl 1 base.

I am taking a beating in my AK's which I need to be carefull of.

When I get to 25k supplues I will be able to upgrade more of my sqns at Tarawa.

This has been done on a shoestring and I am payig for it now.

We soldier on though !!!!

A canadien Hurricane Sqn is on the way which will upgrade to VB's in a few weeks

Andy Mac -> Countering the Zero (2/2/2006 4:29:41 PM)

One key thing I have noticed on the allies side in countering the IJN fighters in mid 42 is to spread out your Commonwealth Fighter Sqns to allow you to upgrade to Spitfires in different places as required.

PDU and hindsight tells me the only Fighter I have that is more than a match for the Zero is the Vb nothing else so spreading out Canuck/ Aussie/ Kiwi and Brit Sqns is a must as you approach June

Andy

ny59giants -> RE: Countering the Zero (2/2/2006 5:15:37 PM)

It is kinda comical that the main Allied fighter worth anything in the Pacific were British fighters until the arrival of the P-38G's in 10/42. [&:] The only draw back is their short range. Thus, it is just holding on until first the Spitfire in 6/42 and then finally the P-38's. I have had to send some Wirraway Squadrons to PM and then changed them over to Hurricanes due to their short transport range (7 hexes).

The P-40B's were ok, but the AVG is the only group with the experience to go against the Zeros.

I try to hide one 72 plane FG of P-39's in Brisbane set on training level 90% to get ready for the 38's.

I use the "game system" of setting bombers to "Supply Transport" over their home base to bring up their experience into the 70's, but I have yet to find a way for the short legged fighters besides air to air. [:(][:(]

Andy Mac -> RE: Countering the Zero (2/3/2006 12:17:17 PM)

Spits F4F's and P40E's are the only fighters I have confidence in against zeroes (although Hurricanes do well enough as long as the pilot xp is high they are just so dammed hard to kill).

F4F's and P40E rely on attriting the jap pilot pool whereas Spits actually have a quality edge.

I tend not to use the supply transport thing for training bombers but I dont call it gamey its no different to me than all those Zeroes training in China !!!

Andy

Andy Mac -> RE: Countering the Zero (2/5/2006 3:26:36 PM)

A few turns have passed with several disasters occuring.

Daily attacks against Tarawa by enemy LBA are creaming my Transports despite my CAP.

I am enduring in order to get my fighters in.

In China he seems to be re deploying for what I dont know.

I have messed up in Australia. 1st Aus Div has been cut off and the whole of 1st Corps is in danger of being cut off. 1st Aus Div has retreated to Broome so thats a second Div shot down.

I am trying to get the rest of 1st Corps out of the pockt.

Andy

Nice raid on Tarawa by a light IJN SC TF I am struggling to keep it secure without committing heavy forces to Tarawa

Andy Mac -> RE: Countering the Zero (2/10/2006 12:03:54 AM)

Ok this has been getting nasty I am withdrawing all aircraft from North Aus ists just not worth it. I will fight on the ground but I have no intention of getting surrounded again.

I have a cadre of 1st Aus got out but I will lose the rest of the div.

I am evaccing fast my forces from the crossraods in the Desert I cannot stand so far some my supply head I will need to fall back onto my LOC.

A US Div has landed at Brisbane so I am feeling better but I had to pull it out of New Cal so I need to gewt more troops to the front Pronto I feel a tad exposed all over at the mo.

Spits are close then Pauks Zeroes will start to feel the pain !!!!

Andy Mac -> RE: A lucky escape (2/10/2006 12:30:20 PM)

I have now read the 1st 4 pages of Pauks AAR (By agreement) and he has read 1st 4 of mine.

Interesting how different the other side of the hill looks.

(PZB I blame you for Perth and destruction of 3rd Aus Div.......git !!!!)

Actually re reading them side to side is fascinating....I have to say I love his maps they are great how big a sucker do I feel over the Malaya debacle. I really thought I had read his intentions correctly.

As for India as you can see i was convinced he was going for India.....I guess I was wrong to commit so much airpower to defend it.

Andy

Andy Mac -> RE: A lucky escape (2/11/2006 4:46:02 PM)

1st Corps has broken contact and is moving back towards its supply head in the south retrating towards adeilade.

27th US Div arrived at Brisbane

My Carriers raid Perth in last few days but no sign of troop convoys evaccing Pauks men.

Ill linger one more day then withdraw.

Convoys assembling on the west coast.

Chungking is now covered by c 100 fighters protecting my remainingf chinese industry points

Andy Mac -> RE: A lucky escape (2/12/2006 1:11:56 AM)

I am tempted to bring Indomitable/ Illustrious and Formidable plus possibly even Hermes down to join the US Fleet in SOPAC.

Seafires are coming and the opportunity to re organise my fleet is not to be missed.

Andy

Andy Mac -> RE: A lucky escape (2/12/2006 3:38:56 PM)

One pesky ML sent to the bottom.,

Spits arrive soon then the fun begins.

Planning on 2 Sqns on Tarawa/ Mew Cal/ and Aus plus India and Chungking.

I suspect these zero sweeps are about to get more expensive for Pauk !!!!

I am seriously considering just abandonging North Aus for a while

Andy
