Drink another coffe mlees. Time to wake up. Shangri-La is a mythical place (something like Paradise fro christians it also called Shambala). IMHO it is similar to Nik's Alien Spacecraft. It is a joke. Or is he really orbiting somewhere?

Looks like people are out there??

I witnessed Big J fire for the first time in practice in 1968 off San Clemente island. In spite of that, I forgot what it is like, and when she fired her first shots in anger in August of that year, and I was again present - on a DIFFERENT ship - I forgot about the report. Until it arrived. Not pleasant.

Is it the wind? It looks like the flag shows the wind should be blowing the powder-smoke back into the ship?

I found the Division! It warped from a TF to a base.

You sure you haven't got a teleportation beam rather than a death ray?

I'll jump on the "what is it?" bandwagon.
I was in Turret 2 during this shoot -- actually filling the role of turret officer before they wised up and put a real 0 in there.

So, what's wrong with this picture?

Okay.. Here's what I see. The director on top of the conning tower seems to be pointed to starboard, while the guns are firing to port. Check out the picture below of the bridge of Wisconsin.

For want of a better term, the "fat" end of the director is pointed forward in the Wisconsin picture, which one could assume because of Navy tradition is the proper direction. Take a look at Barbarrossa's pic, and it appears to be pointed away from the direction the guns are firing.

IOW, while the gun crews are humping 2600 pound bullets, the FC crew is checking out the babes on some beach in the opposite direction.......?

Yep.. Looks like that to me. It better be something real exciting, like LST's canoe without the writing at least.

revrick, in your lower picture, which ones exactly are the fire directors?

I thought it was the black thing on the side of the turret, but thats not obviously in the lower picture. seems like I'm the only one not in the navy!

I am a carrier sailor, so please forgive me if I get this wrong. In the picture below, I drew a box around the "Range finder" portion of the Gun director. This structure should actually revolve, and "face" the target. Correct?

If so, does it look like, in the OP photo, that it is facing the opposite direction? I can't tell.

Yep, that's what I'm talking about. (Sounds like a bad Domino's Commercial!?!?!) I was not a gunnery type - a communicator instead. But, IIRC from my reading, that device is the primary main director, which detects the range and bearing to the target (and provides constant updated data, I believe,)forwards it to the analog computer in fire control (underneath the deck armor,) which sends those calculations directly to the turrets for laying the guns. I believe the fire control center can accept data from the Primary and Secondary Main directors, or the Mk 37 5" directors as well. There is a smaller version of this same device on a tower abaft of the aft funnel.

That's it!!

The main battery forward gun director (Spot One) is pointed in the exact opposite direction from where we're firing! Spot One suffered a synchro casualty and could not hold a stable bearing because of scoring on a set of contacts. The scoring caused such shifting (bouncing actually) in train that when the turrets went to auto they shook like there was an earthquake.

Spot Two was the controlling director.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back for the answer.

It looks like the red pennant is actually blowing forward (or at best, across the deck at right angle to the presumed direction of motion). Ditto the smoke. There is no bow wake. Put that together and it would suggest the ship is motionless. I would tend to believe that is not the way it is usually done

We were doing about 2 knots.

That is a fringe benefit when manning directors with powerful optics!
