I guess I shouldn't expect too much from a "Beagles" fan anyway.

Take off a squadron or two of Vals from KB and put on some Zeros and go hunting LBA or CV's.
In a battle of attrition, the Allies win.

So far Kenny has gone "Sir Robin" on me so his fleet is intact

wouldn't call me defense a true Sir Robin, as i did move the UK 18th Inf Div to Java, moved burma units to Andaman Is, took Marcus Is in raid, and still hold Koepang with several non-Dutch units. Yes my fleet has been inactive throughout the most part, but its only March of 42'...still plenty of time to play

Non Dutch units at Koepang? I am guessing Lark and Gull Forces and the rest Dutch. All the better for my invasion of Oz if they are captured on Timor.

I guess I should be happy your fleet doesn't come out to play considering I ended up on the losing end every time it did. . Sinking the Boisie hardly makes up for losing several CLs and DDs.

quick update...as of 4/2/42

China - swarm of japanese troops are heading out of recently caputured Sian towards Chunking. Chinese troops holding onto Wuchow and Kweilin at the moment, while another army of Chinese troops hold the ground b/t Changsha and Chungking

Burma - CW-forces retreated back to Johart to make a stand there, as japanese troops slowing make there way through the jungles. At Rangoon, the CV Akagi, and CA and DD are hit by mines laid by Dutch subs

India - large japanese force continue to plot their way out of Yanam, while small formations of japanese, british, indian forces trade interior bases like pokemon cards. Airwar remains mysteriously quiet

DEI - Japanese have landed a brigade size force at Koepang, the last dutch hold out in the DEI. B25's and Hudsons out of Derby mix it up with Ruffe's and score some minor hits on the transports

Australia - all is quiet

South Pacific - american surface TF of 2 omaha class CL's and 6 DD's attempt to intercept a japanese ASW TF south of Lunga with disasterous results. The TF had out ran its LRCAP by one hex, and was demolished by 140 bettys out of Lunga. Only 2 DD's survived. (luckly those CLs will come back as Cleveland class cruisers)

North Pac - Kiska is invaded, japanese soldier WIA from snowball

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/10/42

I had sent the KB hunting up near Sri Lanka looking for the Royal Navy. When I didn't locate any ships in port I had a hunch that they were sneaking down the map edge in the India Ocean. I sent one of my "Super Snooper" AVs and some subs out to investigate and they spotted 3 TFs making a run for it. 4 Days at top speed and the KB caught up with them. So far 10 DDs and 2 AKs loaded with AC have been sunk. Kenny informs me that the DDs are out of gas so the carnage should continue tomorrow.

The KB refueled and went back to sinking transports along the map edge. I sank only 4 of the 12 sighted because full alpha strikes of 200+ planes were launched against single ship TFs.

After the battle I saw that 144 A-20 Bostons had gone down with the transports. At first I was puzzled because the transports were going from India to Oz and I could not figure out how they had gotten there in the first place. First I thought that Kenny had used PPs and sent them from the US to India. Then it dawned on me. The B-17s in India had been real quiet recently. I could not figure out why they were not plastering my troops in Burma and India especially since I has no AC in the theater. The B-17s were too far away to transfer out since the DEI fell 6 weeks ago. Recently B-17s showed up in Darwin and I had written this off as a reinforcement squadron. Then it all made sence. Kenny had downgraded the India B-17s to A-20s and shipped them out. B-17s were now being drawn for the pool to upgrade bombers in OZ to B-17s.

To top it all off I split the KB this turn to avoid the overkill strikes of last turn. Kenny has informed me that Spruance is on the way to battle the KB. If he gets there this turn I am so screwed.

What altitude do you have your Vals/Kates at?? Above 15k is great against CV's and large targets, but you want to set them lower for AK/TK's (9 plane groups vs 4 plane groups). This attack had only a 10% hit ratio. Not good against an Allied AC TF.

Just checked. Vals at 2K for some reason and Kates at 9K. I will have to change this if they don't get sunk this turn.

If Kenny is coming full speed from Perth I am going to get causght.

haha..nice subject title. Figure those millions of A-20's i get should be used for something. Now that you figured out my B17 secret, i'll have to be more careful as where they should be deployed next

concerning the major CV battle approaching, i'm a little concerned about my chances. Even though i'm only 11 hexes out from the KB's last report position, and have the element of surprised. I doubt i'll be able to get my bombers through the uber-CAP. I figure that since you were attacking transports, your CAP was probably set high like 70-80%, that means i'll probably be slaughtered with my pathetic escorts. Of course that means your attacks will be weaker with less escorts, but i doubt my F4Fs will be able to handle any more than 2 dozen zeros.

either may..good luck in the upcoming battle, should pretty much decide the game AV point wise

unfortunately for Spruance he found himself in the middle of 3 Japanese TF's..here's how the battle played out the next 2 days (in order)

1. Planes from the Allied TF's struck the japanese TF's at Dawn. Despite the heavy CAP, SBD's were able to fight their way through and land the following...
- Kaga - 6 bomb hits (heavy damage)
- Shokaku - 2 bomb hits
- Junyo - 8 bomb hits, 1 torp hit (heavy damage)
2. The japanese, now fully aware of the Allied presence, launched a counterattack from their south and western TF's on the Enterprise TF . The small Allied CAP was easily overwelmed by the 100 or so Kate TB's, and despite flak claiming the majority of the kills, the japs were able to do the following damage....
- Saratoga - 3 bomb hits, 5 torp hits (sunk)
- Enterprise - 2 bomb hits, 3 torp hits (heavy damage)
- Formidable - 4 bomb hits, 3 torp hits (heavy damage)
- Dorestshire - 2 torp hits
- Louisville - 1 bomb hit
3. the Lady Lex responded with a strike on the southern japanese TF, but the strike went in fragmented and suffered heavy losses. Minimal damage was done to the enemy.
- Hiryu - 1 bomb hit
4. the japanese were able to get one more attack off before nightfall, on the remaining undamage allied TF (Lady Lex TF). Luckly the japanese strike was fragmented due to the approaching darkness, and only moderate damage was done resulting in....
- Lexington - 2 bomb hits
- Indomitable - 2 torp hits
- Pensacola - 1 torp hit
5. the next day the battle continued. With air operations useless on the Enterprise TF, it was up to the Lexington TF to continue the fight. The Lady Lex TF managed to get off their strike before the japanese, launching an attack at the western japanese TF. With meager assest at this time, minimal damage was done to the japanese...
- Shoho - 1 bomb hit
6. the japanese responded with a strike from their western TF and the newly arrived northeastern TF. Luckly their strikes were fragmented resulting in the following
- Lexington - 1 torp hit
- Indomitable - 1 bomb hit
7. off to the south the retreating CV Formidable was spotted and engaged by a japanese CA. The CA Kako quickly dispatched the escorting DD, and managed to score multiple 8in gun its on the CV Formidable, before she broke off for fear of airstrikes
8. Finally before the day was out, the allied replenishment group was spotted and engaged by 2 japanese BB's and a CA. The warships quickly sunk the 4 DD escorted and severly damaged the oilers, sinking 1 of them.

thanks Raverdave! So far it looks like it will be 3 CVs to 2 CVs. Of course theres still more of this battle to be played out, as i'm sure he still has plenty more aircraft than me. As of now here's how the air losses have played out for this battle...
- Japanese: 123 planes
- 58 Zeros
- 49 Kates
- 16 Vals
- Allies: 236 planes
- 39 F4Fs
- 46 Fulmars
- 44 TBD's

not great, but i was able to down alot of zero's which is good for the larger picture (in fact i've killed over 360 zeros in A2A thus far)

I think that you will find the RN CVs able to take a lot more than the US CVs....in my current AAR One of my RN CVs has been in dry dock no less than 3 times !

Here is the condition of my CVs at the end of last turn:

Junyo: Scuttled
Kaga: 94/52/0 and 20 hexes from a port. Does not look like she will make it
Shoho: 42/29/6 She has a 50/50 chance of survival
Shokaku: 18 sys
Hiryu: 30/1/4

TFs are low on fuel and AC missions plus several CVs are overloaded with diverted AC so everyone is running for home.

The Allies lost the Saratoga, 4 DDs, and 2 AOs for sure. I am guessing that the Enterprise and the Formidable are going to sink. Lexington and Indomitable should be out of action for a few months.

This played out kind of like The battle of the Coral Sea so it is hard to declare a clear winner.

The case can be made that Japan came out on top by sinking 3 CVs at the loss of 2.5 since the Allies only have 2 undamaged CVs left while Japan has 6 heavies and a few lights.

The case for the Allies is that 2 of the 3 sunk Cvs will be back in 18 months along with several more while the Japanese ones are gone for good along with most of my good pilots.

My vote is for a tactical victory for Japan since it allows me freedom of operation for the next 6 months or so but a stategic victory for the Allies.

The "What ifs":

1. What if the Akagi hadn't hit a mine at Rangoon and had added her 81 planes to the battle?

2. What if The KB hadn't been split?

3. What if the Allies committed the Yorktown and the Hornet to the battle?

Just like Midway, volumes can be written on these topics.

well this is a great battle, it shows that Stock can be very realistic whenever battles are not too big, and look quite historical ( ie no death star )...

Too bad whenever the battle is a big 8 against 6 CVs you end up having 6 sunk for the weak side and one mildly damaged on the winning side...

Anyway, this battle is a great thing to imagine... Looks really historical...

will have to agree with you there. I will be down to only 2 CV's and a CVE in the near future, with the Wasp not arriving for another 2 months or so.

nice set of what if's. Kinda reminds me what would've happened at Midway had the japanese been able to scrap together enough pilots for the Zuikaku to be able to sortie with the KB that June.

I can answer the 1st one what if question though...i wouldn't have attacked if the Akagi was still around. Thank god for O19, O20 for laying down that minefield near Rangoon. Those dutch subs thus far have been such a huge asset for me in this game.

yeah i was very surprised at the outcome of this battle considering stocks reputation for uber-CAPs. I even went agaisnt the unspoken rule of "never commit allied carriers against the japanese carriers before June 42'" and managed to survive with at least 1 CV. I think what helped was staggering my altitudes...1/3 coming in at 2000ft, 1/3 coming in at 10,000ft, and 1/3 coming in at 20,000ft.

Notice how the IJN Yudachi TF gets a crack at every TF in the hex? Why is it that ships in a TF are eligible to be otherwise occuppied and sometimes are not eligible for combat yet seperate TFs are always intercepted (by a TF which simply intercepts every TF in succession). Man, this was pointed out years ago.

I will be down to only 2 CV's and a CVE in the near future, with the Wasp not arriving for another 2 months or so.

No if I can just kill Lt. Putnam

May have to send a SNLF hit team to take him out.
