Its not very clear to me what these do - as you can change them at any point without apparent penalty?

Is it the stance at the beginning of the turn that matters?

I know e.g. March gives you more movement points, Defend least. Am I right in thinking they effect readiness in battles too?

yes, if you are in rest or march stance and are attacked then your fighting capabilities are reduced. its in the manual under section 17. doesnt say anything about training stance when attacked, i would think there would be some kind of penalty otherwise i would just leave em in that mode all the time unless im attacking.

Training is bad for all things except for training of course.
