Yeah, Mike. How the heck does one explain to a child why grown-ups do some of the things they do. Seems both of you are confused, frustrated, hurt. Wish there was something I could say. J

What remains to be seen is if they discover that it was a mistake, if there is actually anything that can be done about it.  Either way, it will make everyone feel immensely better, if we know that my son was not ranked 6 or 7 out of 9, but actually #1.

Only in the sense that it should be seen*! It probably got an R rating for partial brief nudity... the plot revolved around three female cheerleaders that were "strippers", except they never really took their clothes off (even during the $50K stripping competition they entered for college money) and called themselves "go-go dancers". Oh yeah, they were ninjas on the side.

Please let me join in the commiserations, USS. It always hurt like heck whenever I saw my kids getting the flying purple shaft, particularly as I felt so helpless to do anything about it (I had a strong aversion to the "angry parent" thing, as I'm sure you do, too).

When my son was in eighth grade, I had to get him to baseball practice by 3:30 p.m. (I was a single parent, my wife having died of cancer a few years before). Problem was, I got off work at that same time, and my hardass employer refused to let me flex my hours so that I could take care of "unnecessary" family business. I finally arranged to have a neighbor give him a ride, but by then, he had been benched for being chronically late for practice. Sigh. Then, in his senior year in high school, he basically picked up his baseball team and carried it on his shoulders to the state championship with astonishing pitching, hitting and fielding performances. He got honorable mention All-State. Then, the big city newspaper came out with its "Prep Athlete of the Week" award. Sonny finished second to a kid who played "adapted floor hockey."

I'm sure glad I'm not there anymore, old pal, and I don't envy your or your son's situation, but I can sure empathize. Best wishes to you both (and to the rest of your family, who I am sure are trying to cope with it, too).

Maybe not a mistake... i remember losing one contest as a school kid to someone who clearly was not in the running... one judge held out for this kid until the others gave in... on the stage, the kid accepted the award from the hold-out judge with the words:
"Thanks, Uncle Jack!"

Yeah, I had a friend who was cut from the 1984 Olympic cycling team due to politics. He clearly had better times than the rider chosen for the spot, but the other guy had been known by the coaches longer. Sometimes life just ain't fair...

I just had a fantastic phone conversation with the coach.  After a few minutes of talking he started to realize that something might be very wrong.  There is an ex-NHL (brief playing time) goalie in the organization who did a goalie evaluation session as part of the weekend's tryouts.  Then, he was gone, leaving behind his rankings from 40 minutes of trained observations during his assigned drills.  That goalie coach ranked the other kid with my son's same last name as #1 of 9, when everyone in the building knew he wasn't close to that.  The two coaches making the final selections went 90% by the goalie coach's input as far as their goalie decisions. 

As our conversation went on, the head coach remembered more and more of what my son did over the 3 days, and became more convinced that the goalie coach may have accidentally ranked the wrong "same last name" kid as #1.  He asked if I had the goalie coach's phone number, which I did, and immediately left to go call him to discuss it, with a promise to call me back when he knows something.

What remains to be seen is if they discover that it was a mistake, if there is actually anything that can be done about it.  Either way, it will make everyone feel immensely better, if we know that my son was not ranked 6 or 7 out of 9, but actually #1.

It could be....

Notice though how the roof is buckled upwards and there is hood damage, but no front end damage. If it's real that horse was trying to jump and ended up landing inside the car. If it's shopped, it's quite a nice job.

photo shop if the horse was that big the entire front of the car would be completely destroyed.
