there won´t be a single ship sinking due to mines or CD fire. Well, only some 3500 mines there (that have no effect) and over 50 CD guns, that aren´t existing anymore due to half a dozen nuke naval bombardments in one night... That way the enemy can land like at a hostile base without an enemy present. This is somewhat depressing. It´s really a good way to use those float planes, unfortunately this will mean I will never have a CD gunfire for the rest of the war. With this landing here and Allied 4E bombers able to reach Borneo´s South coast and the Japanese inability to do something against them... well, we have lost the war... yesterday...

and here we go. After we didn´t launch a single strike yesterday due to whatever reason we start with most of my bombers failing to locate the target. The IJA bombers are useless at extended range, even though they all have 80+ exp... Miller has taken back all his carriers and combat ships, only the invasion ships remain at Lautern... as only two of the eight TFs unloaded yesterday, we could have killed a lot of troops on the ships yesterday...

now we get all those small strikes. Miller didn´t overdo with the number of TFs, I guess I can´t really blame him for using 8 TFs for his invasion, even though I used only 4 TFs to land 250.000 troops in the first wave in India.

and that´s it! The empty enemy invasion TFs are far from being wrecked, the IJA bombers proved to be more or less useless at 7 hexes. Miller will lose two dozen ships I guess when they will probably retreat tomorrow, so this invasion is already a full success for him.

Well done Paul!

Unfortunately, I have ordered KB to move out of this area a week ago, so this was absolutely bad timing I guess.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

another Allied base in India falls. The plan now is: sieze all those bases East of Calcutta (shouldn´t be a problem) and then crush Calcutta. Urban hex with 200+ assault points. Will be a tough nut but with all the tanks it should be possible.

RETREAT from Karachi! Not with all troops, but with the majority. We will keep 2000 assault points at the base, this will mean the enemy won´t be able to break out with his ground forces. Of course he will be able to move them out with his ships. Two reasons for this: the first and major one is that defeating an enemy that gets an adjusted av of 12.000+ is near to impossible and Nikmod makes two wrecked Allied base forces (from my nuke naval bombardments) so strong that we can´t use our bombers against the ground troops from an altitude that makes it worth attacking. Even 16.000ft is too low. The second reason is of course the Allied advance directly into the SRA from Northern Australia. Miller can now move up to Java without having much problems as soon as he gets the level 6 airfield running on Lautern as he doesn´t need carriers here. He can stack 300 bombers on Lautern and send them unescorted on raids up to 14 hexes. 10/42 will make it even worse as then he will have Lightnings available. But I guess he will be better off sending his bombers unescorted...

I guess there´s not much doubt that I will win in game terms as I will surely achieve a decisive autovictory on 1/43 but this says nothing. In fact when Miller gets his machine running out of Timor in early 43 (when the Corsair arrives) then I have lost and I must admit defeat then.

No matter in which mod, Timor and Northern New Guinea seems always the best option for an attack into vital areas of the Japanese. The stronger the Allied bombers are, the worse for the Japanese. In my case, it is really bad as Nikmod is the mod I´ve played so far that makes the Allied bombers the strongest of all mods.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Sian

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 14163 troops, 458 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2698

Defending force 117562 troops, 663 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3717

Allied ground losses:
149 casualties reported

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Lautem

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 2964 troops, 17 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 167

Defending force 46469 troops, 693 guns, 107 vehicles, Assault Value = 1598

well, there´s no doubt that I lose this base within the next couple of days. When I look at all those Allied divisions that landed totally without opposition and therefor in perfect shape (as they did in the two previous invasions) I´m happy now that I have not more troops at the base.

The base is 100% damaged but all those troops will have it repaired within 7 days at the latest. Then the enemy will have a level 6 airfield 7 hexes from my next major resource base (Kendari). I can put 300 fighters there but 300 fighters on 90% Cap will mean 150 in the air and 150 fighters can´t even stop one attack of 300 bombers. After this one attack, Kendari is toast and Miller can move to the next base. Taking Koepang is no problem, then there will be 600 bombers on Timor... and so on... lol - game over!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Yenen

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 65415 troops, 700 guns, 2 vehicles, Assault Value = 3516

Defending force 43936 troops, 240 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1261

Allied ground losses:

Well, I just love the Stringbag, and here's why.  It's slow, it's unmaneuverable, it's fragile, it's obsolete... but it was so successful.

However, I'm sorry for your loss.

It was my own fault. You´re stupid if you know that there are torpedo bombers and you still send in BBs...

We send in two cruiser squadrons today, this one is lead by Admiral Tanaka! Miller has retreated all his warships to Darwin to keep them safe. This way our cruisers get a chance to shoot up the more or less empty invasion TFs without being in real danger... CA Kumano lost a 8 inch turret to a 4 inch hit...

combined strike out of Maumere and Kendari. The IJA bombers are based at Maumere. A lot of shipping is hit again, our main problem will be the fact that those ships only have to go 6 hexes and they can be disbanded at Darwin. Another problem for the Japanese when the Allied attacks out of Northern Australia, he can make use of his ports there. When the Allied attack in the Pacific, they have most times a looong way to the next level 6 or higher port and one torp can be devastating for an AK. In this case, one torp won´t sink a big AK/AP.

what would I have given for such attacks the first day when not a single bomber launched and 80% of the enemy troops were still on the ships waiting to get unloaded. We could have sunk a lot of troops on their ships as Miller did nothing with his carriers other than positioning them 5 hexes off the invasion site. This could have caused a lot of casualties but once again, he gets away with it. Of course it would not have had any influence on the invasion being a success, even 1/3 of the troops that were landed on the beaches could take the base.

I have to go up with the numbers of expected sinkings, I guess in the end Miller will something around 40 ships. Sounds high for one invasion, is nothing for this war winning move though...

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

this retreat costs us 200 points for ground losses, this is 40% of our total losses so far...

The Allied units landed until today and they get a higher adjusted av with a deliberate attack than their base av... what can I say, it doesn´t matter anyway, even if they get their av halfed, they still easily take the base.

The plan was to sink ships during the landing with mines and heavy CD fire but this plans are just phantasy as Miller will be able to always nuke my bases and therefore he won´t ever see real CD gunfire, no matter if I place 1 or 20 CD units in a hex. If I place 20 units there, only my losses will be 20 times higher.

Miller now have 5 division and a lot of artillery sitting here, I didn´t spot a single base force but I´m sure those will come in soon and then he has a level 6 airfield ready to bomb Kendari and Maumere to dust with unescorted bomber raids. All bases up to Kendari can also be reached by 4Es from Northern Australia and this means I will have to evacuate those bases in two months at the latest! LOL

Like I´ve mentioned earlier, IMO this attack was a war winning move. Not points wise, but campaign wise. We will still trigger autovictory in three months (if we don´t lose all of KB) but the game was won by Miller today! Therefor it proves now that my invasion of India was wrong. Not because I could use those divisions on Timor. Using them there is senseless when you have your troops in range of 1000 undestructable Allied bombers so I couldn´t use them there anyway. Wrong because my first plan was to attack Northern Australia as I always see an attack out of this area as the MOST dangerous! I´m all the time amazed that many Allied players don´t seem to realize that it´s the BEST direction of attack as you are immediately within the heart of the Japanese most important area. If you manage to advance up to Maumere, it means game over for all your oil and resources in Sulawesi, Java and Southern Borno as then your ships are in range of Allied 4Es - which can´t be stopped at all in Nikmod but I´m only repeating myself on and on.

As it stands now, I will thrown in the kitchen sink as I´m sure that Mille won´t ever change his major attack direction. The problem are still the same though. He can trash my bases just like he wishes to without having to fear my flak nor my fighters. He can also trash KB with one strike as KB´s fighter can´t defend KB against 150 Mitchells. I can attack his shipping... and that´s it! I can not attack his bases! Why? Because of Allied flak! What do you think I will achieve with 200 medium bombers from Kendari when they attack Lautern at 11.000ft? I will achieve 50 runway hits and will lose 30 bombers to flak in one attack with 90% of the rest being damaged. Then the 4Es will show up over Kendari and torch 150 of the damaged bombers at Kendari. The 50 runway hits will be repaired by a dozen sea bea units in one day.

In stock, this wouldn´t be a real desperate situation as we´re still early in the war and I could easily counterattack. Nikmod flak and Nikmod Allied bombers unfortunately don´t give me this possibility. If he gets just ONE succesful attack on Kendari then he will keep it closed easily... one attack and he can make his next jump another 7 hexes North...

I guess it will be a bloody fight the next weeks, perhaps two months, then my airforce, navy and perhaps the army will be totally exhausted and I will just have to wait for the autovictory to pop up and to ask Miller for peace and admit that I can´t stop him from moving into the SRA. It´s depressing that employing 600! fighters on two bases in Timor where not enough to keep us in the game against unescorted bomber strikes. And those bomber strikes are the reason I have to give up sooner or later.

Miller won´t have many more divisions available than those he commited at Lautern, so he probably will have to bring some of them out again, at the latest when he starts his next invasion. This could be the time when I could throw 10 of my divisions at Lautern for a counterattack but I´m 100% sure that the enemy 155mm guns from several of his art units, USMC CD units and USN base forces would eat my ships alive during the landing and my divisions would come ashore at perhaps 50% combat readiness. Then 600+ medium bombers from Wyndham and Darwin and 200 4Es from Derby would attack my shipping... this is when the IJN will go down in a blaze of glory.

god damnd dont be so pessimistic, chris...or is it just understatement?

-you destroyed a big part of the allied carrier force, while the KB is intact.
-you destroyed alot of allied shipping.
-you are at advance in china.
-you are close to secure india and burma.
-you have a strong position in SWPAC.
-and miller can not attack your ressource/oil centers with his 4E because of the HRs.
-you will get better protected fighters with more punch soon so the allied unescorted bomber attacks will be more expensive from then.

even at timor, you have the ability to turn the tide and to destroy the enemy troops there in some weeks.

btw: enjoying to follow this AAR from the beginning.

partially correct, but...

- the only place the Allied can advance without carriers is... exactly where Miller is now attacking...

- a lot of shipping would be 300 ships! Below that number, it´s nothing for the Allied. Two dozen APs lost, well he now has to use more AKs for troop shipping...

- China does help me nothing when the Allied move on Sulawesi and Java

- same goes for India and Burma, does help me nothing when 4Es will be in range of Soerabaja and Balikpapan soon

- The Pacific is secure, without his carriers he won´t attack anyway. Why should he, taking Canton Island means nothing. Two goals for the Allied in the game: attack the SRA, attack Japan. One goal already achieved, he´s already attacking the SRA. Kendari, Amboina, Sorong - all part of the SRA and they are now in full range of heavy AND medium bombers.

- correct, he can not bomb oil/resources of Japanese held Allied territory. But he can sink ships, especially TK! Move a dozen big TK to Soerabaja and then watch 100 B-17/B-24 (high exp by then) dropping bombs on your ships from 10.000ft. Those bombers are more a threat than Betties for everything smaller than a heavy cruiser as they can kill those ships, but they can´t be held off by fighters. The Betties can kill all ships but you don´t want them to meet 50 Allied fighters...

- the better protected fighter with more firepower is the Tojo! The Tojo is a killer against unescorted bombers in stock just like the Zero is... in Nikmod, the Tojo won´t help you against the bombers. Not at all. With the Tojo, the Allied would perhaps have lost 40 more bombers over Timor, but the end result would be the same. There is no chance to stop more than 50 bombers other than to see them turning away right at the start due to low morale. Morale can be recovered within 10 days and then launch one big strike. This strike takes out your airfield and that´s it... and you lose half of your fighters on the ground on the first day if all ordered strikes go in. On the second and third day, you lose the other half of your fighters that are now damaged and grounded...

- like I´ve posted in my previous threat, I don´t see a real chance to turn the tide at Timor as I can´t see how I should surpress his single base. lol I just don´t have the bombers to do that as mine are fragile and the enemy flak is using SAMs. I would need at least 10 divisions to attack those 5 divisions there. Wooden hex, I would probably need 15-20 divisions. I don´t have that many, nor do I have the shipping to bring them in. Miller must play it out absolutely poor if he ever gets in danger of losing Lautern again. It will be the opposite IMO, he will soon seize Koepang on the West end of the island and then he has 2 level 6 airfields... means 600 bombers on Timor! Dili in between is a cake walk for him and can be built up to level 4 within a couple of weeks with half a dozen sea beas. Then we´re talking about 800 ac on Timor. I can base 300 at Kendari, hopefully soon 200 at Maumere and at the moment 150 at Macassar (also Sualwesi). Means I can soon base 650 aircraft North of Timor. Try to do something with 650 aircraft against 800 Allied with the Allied having their absolutely deadly flak. It´s a hopeless fight, I can´t even keep my bases secure if I would use 650 Tojos on them but then I don´t have spare room for a single bomber. The only thing I can use are naval bombardments and KB´s Kates that use laser guieded bombs even when attacking at 26.000ft where we don´t have to fear the Allied SAMs anymore... but what when I don´t get nukes constantly? And what means constantly? Can I do nav bombardments of Lautern for the rest of the war? What when PTs show up? How many DDs am I ready to lose against them? A dozen? 20? All of them?

you see, it´s a war winning move and not even 2000 assault points dispersed over Koepang and Lautern would have helped me, it would only delay the fall of Timor for a couple of weeks but then it´s the same. The war losing move was the fact that I didn´t attack Northern Australia first! When I look at how Miller acted (by not acting) in India, it would have been no problem to attack Northern Australia first and seize those four bases. A ground offensive is very difficult for the Allied as they won´t get much supplies from the East coast over the railline and we could hold those bases for a long time with only nav guard units behind high level forts. It would have delayed my Indian invasion by two months and it would have been worth it.

With 12.000+ adjusted av at Karachi I would have stopped at exactly the same line I do now, keeping Karachi and Delhi sieged, while conquering the rest of the subcontinent. It´s impossible to take an urban base when the enemy gets an adjusted av that is higher than your complete Kwangtung army has! And as mentioned, a2g attacks are no option, two wrecked base forces would take down 12-20 bombers every turn if I would attack at 11.000ft. That´s the dilemma...

I can only repeat myself again, my main - no, my only problems - are the undestructable Allied bombers that hurt you more when attacking unescorted than you hurt hem when you put 300 fighters at a base and the Allied flak that makes it more or less impossible to attack their bases. Voila, that´s it then...

I´m happy that you enjoy the AAR, I´m enjoying both the game and doing the AAR. It will be bloody months ahead but at the moment I can´t see how the game should go much longer than mid 43. If I would be in the position of Miller I would expect my troops sitting in Northern Java and Southern Borneo within the next 6 months. If something goes bad, then perhaps within the next 8 monts. As soon as they have Batavia, nothing is safe up to Singapore! Any more questions?

hi chris,

my only remaining question is:

why do you play nikmod?

i know that you find the weakness of "uber-CAP" in nikmod good, but imho, the develoüpers went too far and did not considered that their changes will cause a huge imbalance in air combat what is THE key aspect of WITP.

although it is not ok, when 100 zeros shoot down 100 B-25, its also wrong that 200 japanese fighters destroy 10-15 allied 2E bombers in the CAP role.

it seems realy that the nikmod "forgives" even more mistakes of the allied player, then stocks do.

have a nice day, chris.

good question and to be honest, I´ve asked this question also in the past. I´ve played this version of Nikmod from both sides so I wasn´t only on the receiving end of the all mighty Allied bombers and Allied flak. I´ve played stock of course, then switched over to mods. Started with an early Nikmod 5.x or so which worked quite good. Then I´ve switched to BigB, which also worked quite good but soon it was as bloody as stock, at least that was my feeling. So changing to Nikmod again with a version that totally damaged fighters from flying cap - PBEM quit. BigB again, too bloody.

Well, the last games with this Nikmod version and I can say that fighter vs fighter really seems to work very good. Also Allied fighters vs Japanese bombers seems to work quite good. But as you say, hundreds of Japanese fighters vs unescorted Allied bombers doesn´t work at all IMO. This is probably a big problem until mid 43 when the first Japanese fighter with at least gun value 10 shows up - the Tony. I´ve never seen it in combat all my NM games ended just before that date so I´m not really sure it will make that much of a difference. But, when you see the fights at places the Allied "usually" advance, means through the Pacific, from atoll to atoll and from the Solomons up to New Guinea then it also works! Why? Because in this area you can´t mass the 800+ bombers Miller can mass at his bases in Northern Australia and then it´s not that much of a problem. Of course Northern Australia and Timor and the bases further North are close enough together and big enough to really mass numbers of aircraft.

I would still attack the subs. If I would have sunk ALL BBs at Pearl, this would have no impact on the nukes - well, only a small one... One nuke or max two are enough and there is nothing shooting back anymore and you can achieve that with having all your float planes from the BBs and CA/CL flying recon the day before. If you see 40+ float planes over the enemy´s base then this raises the detection level that high that you ALWAYS trigger a nuke. The more support troops your enemy has at the base, the bigger the casualties from the nuke. There is only one way to avoid a nuke, as the receiver: don´t put ANY support troops at a base, as inf units aren´t targeted anyway.

So Miller needs, let´s say 4 BBs and a dozen CAs and he could nuke Lautern four times. 2x2 BB TF, 2x6 CA TF = 4 nukes = 20.000 casualties within the support troops on Lautern = 500 hits on the airfield = game over for the defense. Of course he could also repeat that a couple of times in no time because his CAs can go in and out from Darwin (6 hexes) in one day).

And he has far more than 2 BBs, no matter if you attack Pearl Harbour or not. In fact, I think CAs are most times even better for bombardments than BBs, at least I have had the overall better results with them when it comes to achieving hits on the airfields.

The problem isn´t the number of BBs, the problem is that the float planes enable his bombardments to be nukes all the time. I´ve played a lot of PBEMs so far but I have never seen naval bombardments that have such an effect on the game, because in his three invasions so far, we have seen the nukes completely wiping out the coast defense, meaning the landing at a hostile beach (bristling with CD guns the day before) is just like as if the enemy would land at an empty enemy base, taking some casualties but not at all comparable with a landing when at least a couple of the 50+ CD guns would fire at the landing. NONE of my CD guns fired at Midway, Canton and Lautern because they were ALL wiped out the night before due to the nukes.

it turns out now that it was very good to send my surface combat TFs into Lautern as they´ve forced out a couple of enemy TFs and two of them ended North West of Lautern last turn. This means they were still in range of my Betties (I´ve kept them at only 8 hexes which means one hex further than Koepang is away from Kendari). Miller told me he lost any joy of taking Koepang with the massacre of his ships already. Well, I would have preferred to hold Koepang and sink none of the ships.

In the end he really lost a lot of his APs and IMO he shouldn´t have used any APs in the landings as he needs his APs to ferry troops from the West Coast to Australia and he can use AKs for his invasions. And he used once again far too few ships for his landing. Would he have had three times more ships, he would have been away with them after one day or two, not staying in range with them for several days...

But that´s not really counting, 40 ships or so lost for taking Koepang is a good trade IMO...

finally, a little morale boost for the high command of the Japanese. we have spotted the Allied carriers moving West from Darwin again, also several transport TFs. So either Miller is withdrawing his carriers again or this is the upcoming invasion of Koepang already. I just don´t know why he should withdraw his carriers, but I also can´t believe that he can already mount the invasion of Koepang after he threw 2000+ assault points at Lautern...

we´ll see...

We have a plan! Look at the map below, we are trying to hit the Allied hard tomorrow! We have spotted Martlets and Seafires flying Cap over Wyndham and we got recon about CVs being in port. There´s no doubt I guess that there are two or three British carriers disbanded in the level 4 port of Wyndham with nearly no Cap over the base. Nearly no Cap is something like 50 fighters. Seems very careless to me, or Miller feels absolutely safe it seems. He also didn´t keep up the constant bombing of Lautern and so our base is ready for 200 ac to be moved in and strike tomorrow.

The plan is as follows: KB (with 450 ac) and another CV TF (CV, CVL, CVE with another 300 ac) will move to a position North of Timor, 11 hexes from Wyndham. The fighters will be set to sweep Wyndham with 50% Cap as I don´t want to run uncovered into 300 bombers at Koepang if Miller decides to move a couple of squadrons to this base. To make sure we won´t have to fear Koepang´s airfield, two CA bombardment TFs will bombard the airfield during the night, we hope to take out the airfield. In the morning, the first strike should come from Lautern as this base is the closest to Wyndham. 100 fighters on escort should enable 100 bombers to break through the Cap and put a dozen bombs into the carriers. Either 800kg AP bombs or torps! Then my carrier TFs should both launch their sweeps on the remaining Cap. Hopefully weather doesn´t cloud in both of my TFs. After those two sweeps I don´t expect any enemy fighters on Cap anymore and then 200+ unescorted bombers from Kendari should arrive over the base to finish off the already burning British carriers. This is an all out effort! As mentioned before, Miller arrived at an area where I will throw in the kitchen sink to "stop" him. Stopping him is impossible but I will surely wreck havoc on his ships a couple of times. His ground troops and aircraft are untouchable over the long run in this mod but I can and will hurt his navy which is easier in this mod as there´s nothing like an Uber Cap. There´s Uber flak though! To be more precise: ALLIED Uber flak...

I´m 100% sure that the airfield symbol at Lautern will atract hundreds of Allied bombers tomorrow (thanks to this special feature...) so the port strike MUST launch in the morning, otherwise all my ac will be destroyed on the ground. 150 fighers from Maumere will fly LRCAP over the base. I don´t expect them to achieve a lot, they will probably achieve nothing I guess. We will see what tomorrow will bring, either a hurting Japanese defeat or a hurting hit for Miller!

the second bombardment TF moves into Lautern and hits... our own mines... what kind of stupid feature is this that your own mines suddenly turn into hostile mines? The base is lost and everyone has now forgot where our own laid minefield is now???? I´ve never understood this "feature"... well, I guess it´s no feature it is just something noone has thought of... I wreck 6 of my ships due to mine hits, one DD is in sinking condition, all other DDs and the CA has 30+ sys damage... STUPID!!!

300+ more bombers? We do no damage it seems, just look at the loss rate of the damned B-17 again... 2 lost??? The only thing that is positive is the fact that NONE of my ac is destroyed on the ground - this means all have launched to strike Wyndham´s port...

looks like my plan works with Lautern´s airfield launching the first strike! It´s the usual happening, the Allied fighters get the bounce and and on and on and only a short time we don´t have to suffer from the Allied never ending bounce. This was the phase when we then were able to hurt the Allied fighters also. I guess during the bounce phase, the Allied fighters achieved a 10:1 kill rate which is quite amazing considering the fact that our Zeros are 80+ exp. Of course the British carrier pilots are well skilled also. The Seafire proved to be far deadlier than the Martlet!

Our fighters succesfully held off most of the Allied attackers on our formations and the bombers were able to push through and they soon sighted Wyndham´s port to drop their loads! BUT WHAT HAPPENED THEN??? Achieving one f*cking (sorry) hit on a CLAA???? 115 high exp IJN bombers drop their bombs on at least a dozen ships in port and we only achieve one f*cking hit? None of the CVs hit??? This is ridicoulos! I´ve never seen something like this before! Imagine your PH strike on turn one would only see one bomb hit from your Kates? Would you ask if the game is broken? Well, this result is not that far from a broken game it seems to me...

THIS IS JUST SO DEPRESSING...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Wyndham , at 30,86

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 76

Allied aircraft
Seafire x 13
Martlet II x 7

Japanese aircraft losses

Allied aircraft losses
Seafire: 19 destroyed
Martlet II: 9 destroyed
Spitfire Vb: 2 destroyed
P-40E Warhawk: 3 destroyed

Now one of my CV TFs launched it´s strike, it wasn´t KB but the high exp KB pilots aren´t needed anyway, as multiple strikes really kill enemy CAP! It was a totally amazing result as those Zero pilots are nothing better than the escorts of the first strike, but not being on escort and being the second strike helped a lot. AND the Allied didn´t get a never ending bounce phase! There shouldn´t be any enemy fighters left for my next sweep or the bomber strike from Kendari...

CL Birmingham, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
CV Indomitable, Bomb hits 4, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
CLAA Ceres, Bomb hits 1, on fire
CL Glasgow, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Allied ground losses:
72 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Vehicles lost 1

Port supply hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
20 x G3M Nell bombing at 10000 feet
5 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet

KB was clouded in so here we go with our strike from Kendari. The bombers only meet 3 fighters that are no threat and then 216 bombers drop bombs and torps (around 25 bombers attacked with torps). I thought, well, the strike from Lautern was a very, very rare result and now the enemy high value ships at Wyndham are toast... bomb after bomb and torp after torp splash and nearly no hits... I began to wonder and in the same moment I got more and more upset! What the hell is going on? Why aren´t my bombers hitting something? Then we saw more hits and I thought it would be enough to cause major damage on the enemy carriers, as we are dropping 800kg bombs!!!! Well, it was NOT enough, it seems that a 800kg bomb is worth nothing! Just look at those carriers, they don´t even show up as heavily damaged! This means they don´t even have a combined sys and flt damage of 50!!!! This game is nuts!!!

Besides that my bombardment TFs were shredded by our own mines and that KB was clouded in (we didn´t need those fighters anyway) everything worked as planned and then I get such die rolls? Am I drunk? First I get ridicoulosly low hit rates and then 4 x 800kg bombs and a torp doesn´t even heavily damage a British carrier? I can´t believe it!

I thought that if both bomber strikes would arrive in full strenght over Wyndham that I would sink at least two of the three carriers, more probably would be all carriers sunk... and then this sh*t happened. 331 high (means 80+) exp IJN torp bombers achieved 17 800kg bomb hits and 3 torp hits! This would be the same as if your PH strike on 12/7 would achieve three bomb hits and one torp hit. What would you think about?

I just don´t get it! This is a level 4 port and there is not even nearly enough Cap and we launch the maximum of bombers we can launch (I guess all but 27 Nells on the whole map were attacking Wyndham in this turn) and all this for no result. Don´t know what is more depressing, the hit rate or the damage die rolls... never seen that before...

I guess even in real life 331 high exp bombers would have been able to achieve more hits on those big static targets in port. And in real life I guess 4 of those bombs (even if they would have been the 500kg bombs used in real life) would cause major damage to a British carrier even if it wouldn´t sink it would be no surprise if it would be a write off...

Day Air attack on Wyndham , at 30,86

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 77

Allied aircraft
Martlet II x 5
P-40E Warhawk x 6

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Martlet II: 5 destroyed
P-40E Warhawk: 4 destroyed

KB launched the sweep in the afternoon, the British carriers with Seafires aboard weren´t able to launch fighters but the one with Martlets could still launch fighters. This after suffering at least 4 800kg bombs...

Miller stated in his email that it was a bold move and that he now has two heavily damaged carriers but it could have gone worse. He asked if I would try to finish them off next turn. I won´t, the airfield at Lautern is 100% inoperational and all my other pilots need rest from flying at looong range. And I guess Miller would have 200 fighters on Cap next turn (to take away that info, he didn´t!!!! Next turn we spotted only a good dozen fighters over the damaged carriers!!! What is he thinking?)

But look at the losses of this turn... what can I say about Allied flak and what about Allied heavy bombers. I guess we would have to be super lucky if at least CV Formidable would go down, I seriously doubt it. So this means we have probably two CVs over 50 sys damaged and one below 50 sys and so those carriers won´t show up in the next 6-10 months. This leaves the Allied with 2 operational US CVs at the moment and this will also give us the chance and time to prepare against the Allied offensive out of Timor. With only 2 CVs it´s impossible to advance further. But of course the airfield at Koepang will cause us major trouble, especiall if we can´t bombard it due to mines (our own) and PTs or we don´t do any damage with our bombardments.

no confirmed sinking of the yesterday attacked ships and like mentioned last turn, there was nearly no Cap over Wyndham today... I don´t understand Miller, did he really gamble that I would not launch another strike immediately?

now Miller has moved major numbers of bombers to Koepang! This troop convoy is one hex off Maumere, bringing in a nav guard unit. Looks like nothing is save anymore when within 8 hexes of Koepang... major problem... We´re just lucky that the Allied bombers still have a low exp, otherwise this TF would have been 100% obliberated by this big number of attacking bombers... unfortunately it´s impossible to close down Koepang... with the upcoming Allied assault on the SRA with all it´s major resource bases soon (guess within the next 6 months) being in range of Allied heavy bombers we have to seriously think about where to get the resources and oil from. From India resources (which we have conquered already and where we can draw a lot of resources from - at least for the next 12 months hopefully) but where do we get the needed oil when shipping to Palembang will be in danger of being attacked by Allied bombers. I hope to at least hold off the 4Es on long range naval attack but as soon as the enemy is 8 hexes from Palembang, there won´t be a real chance to bing out the oil. Soooo, only other place with oil is: RUSSIA!!!

China also has a small oil field at Lanchow and we will take that base within the next couple of weeks hopefully if the Chinese aren´t able to stall our offensive in the North again. While I absolutely denied of even thinking about an invasion of Russia a couple of months game time ago, Miller´s move on the SRA more or less forces me to think about attacking Russia to seize the oil we need. Of course this could give Miller also the chance to fly in heavy bombers from Alaska and also the P-38 will reach Russia from Kiska. But the P-38 numbers are limited and we would of course throw more or less all we have at the Russian airfields in the first days to keep them down.

We will see... This new situation just forces us to think different!

I don´t get it either, there´s no real reason I can see why this is such a bad result. All bombers reached the target, they were nearly not attacked by the enemy fighters and all are 80+ exp! Still, they didn´t hit anything it seems...

it is depressing...

All I can say is that Miller must have had super duper lucky die rolls and I must have had the 100% opposite...

Yes, certainly.  It's even worse, since if you had sunk those CVs, they would not respawn.  And, you know it already, they have Swordfishes...

the Swordfish aren´t my problem, they will upgrade to Avengers in a year and if those Swordfish run into Cap, I guess the Swordfish is the ac in the game that can take the least damage and it´s dead.

The problem will be the 30+ Corsairs for each carrier in 10 months...

I´ve got at least a dozen units at Koepang that have flak guns, including three AA rgt and a big base force... this doesn´t mean we could hurt the attacking aircraft. Heck, Miller even uses his obsolete Dutch fighters for airfield attacks now! And it seems we can´t even harm them...

couple of Mitchells attack KB... they all turn back before bein shot down... I guess the only thing that stops Miller from a bombing offensive out of Lautern is the fact that he probably hasn´t really a lot supplies there...

Seems like Miller has a new wonder weapon... Coronados out of Northern Australia are spotting EVERY single of my ships in range, they sink at least three barges every turn and today they put a bomb into CVE Chuyo that was sitting at Kendari under an umbrella of at least 250 fighters...

the only good thing was that I had luck with the damage die roll... only 14 sys damage in the end...

Unfortunately I was right with my assumption when my sub was attacked by the British! I have to say I was shocked to encouter this British cruiser sqadron... we had Admiral Tanaka in command of our bombardment TF and thank god we launched a long lance attack at the beginning of the engagement. Nevertheless of the hits we achieve on the enemy cruisers, we really suffer also. I had this TF going into position yesterday and I´m really getting predictable... this was the alert for Miller that I will try another (desperate) naval bombardment and so he ordered his cruisers to engage our TF.

The British are as experienced in night battles as we are and it was a good idea of Paul to send the Brits instead of the Yankees. Guess we were lucky in the end that we did not suffer more damage on the cruisers while the British cruisers suffered a couple of hits. We did lose two DDs in this engagement though, second class DDs but still DDs that are precious for the fight against Allied subs...

another round and I was not really happy to see the nav battle screen popping up again... We put a couple of 8 inch shells more into the enemy cruisers but none is confirmed sunk. The enemy DDs sink two of my DDs, in total we lost 3 DDs today. Two of my heavy cruisers were damaged (bringing the total of damaged heavy cruisers to 6 now!). The enemy lost a DD (probably) and had 3 heavy cruisers heavily damaged with another one on fire. I hope that at least one will be lost, otherwise it was a clear Allied victory...

two things are disturbing here. First: I was dumb enough not to set my bombers on nav/airfield attack and so my bombers did not go after the damaged enemy cruisers and second: we only destroy 4 bombers while we lose half a dozen ac to ops...

it´s just not worth it...

Miller moved some of his ex carrier based fighters and torp bombers to Koepang and they attack our burning cruiser just four hexes away from their base... the torp bombers miss and the 500lb bomb hit doesn´t do much damage while bouncing off... the 18 Zeroes leeking from KB helped a bit...

KB was set to nav/airfield attack and while it was good weather in the am phase, KB was clouded in the pm phase and therefor didn´t launch the airfield strike...

a bad day Gentleman!

Sub attack at 34,81

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1004 encounters mine field at Lautem (33,78)

Allied Ships
DD Kane
DD Rathburne

two obsolete US DDs move into Lautern! Reinforcement? Surface combat TF? Of course the Allied don´t hit MY former minefield! But WE do all the time! STUPID ROUTINE!!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Kendari at 33,71

Japanese Ships
ML Kurokami, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
APD APD-2

Allied Ships
SS KXV

the usual happening in one of my ports where at least two dozen DDs are sitting... one of my second class MLs is lost... perhaps that´s good to lose MLs, so I can´t lay many mines that my own ships will hit as soon we lose a base...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Lautem at 33,78

Japanese Ships
SS RO-64, hits 8, on fire

Allied Ships
AK Red Jacket, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
CL Adelaide
DD Rathburne
DD Kane
AK Timber Rush

This must be a resupply attempt! Even a light cruiser is in this TF... Didn´t spot the damn TF moving towards Lautern bt RO-64 hits a big AK. In return the sub receives a lot of near misses and a hit, forcing the sub to retreat to Kendari with 40+ sys damage. Another sub was hit by a Catalina West of Broome today... and of course the Coronados scored two times on my barges...

6000ft... I´m soon starting to wonder why I can´t even attack at 21.000ft while the Allied attack a heavily defended target at 6.000ft... thought I wouldn´t play stock...

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet

we launch 103 bombers against this resupply attempt and if you wonder why we don´t score more hits, easy explanation: CL Adelaide was sunk quite fast and then 80% of my bombers still tried to attack it and so didn´t attack the TF... this is one of my favourite features of the game... still trying to attack sunken ships and then turning home with the bombload instead of dropping it on the ships of the same TF just 200 feet next to the sunken ship...

Japanese long range torpedo bombers sunk the light cruiser Adelaide during attacks near Koepang! Banzai! Banzai! Banzai!

"BIRMINGHAM' Class Cruiser ordered from Cockatoo Island Shipyard, Sydney, and Australia in 1914. Build was delayed until adequate material was available and the ship was laid down on 20th October 1917. Although she was launched on 27th July 1918 her completion was leisurely until 5th August 1922 when commissioned for training duties. In 1924 she was deployed with HM Battlecruisers HOOD and REPULSE, HM Cruisers DANAE, DELHI, DAUNTLESS, DRAGON and DUNEDIN as part of the Dominion Cruise Squadron during tour by HRH The Prince of Wales. Later she served on the China Station. Old design made her of small value as a fighting unit and she was withdrawn from service to refit and placed in Reserve. In view of the political situation the ship was taken in hand to modernise the ship, which involved reducing her armament and conversion of all boilers to burn oil fuel. As a result only three funnels were needed. Three 4" HA guns were fitted for AA defence and the submerged torpedo tubes were removed. This work began in late 1938 and was completed in March 1939.

CVE Unyo, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
CV Hiryu

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x Albacore launching torpedoes at 200 feet

We had to move out our carrier TFs to attack the shipping at Koepang but of course NONE of my carriers launched a strike the whole day even though weather would have allowed it! Hurrey! But of course Koepang launched a strike, unfortunately against my weaker TF with the CVEs in it. Allied fighters even get the bounce when being on escort and so even the low experienced land based US pilots are performing very well against my high exp carrier based pilots... this attrition will make us teethless within the next couple of weeks... both CVEs are hit hard but will make it. One Allied torp is enough to nearly sink a CVE but 4 x 800kg AP bombs AND a torp isn´t even enough to heavily damage a British carrier as seen at Wyndham...

Luck has definetely switched sides since day one of the invasion of Koepang...
