Been dere Bro,

Sy'mon says - Went to the Bolles School for four years back in the 60s, just across the river from the old JNAS. Surfed Ponte Vedra when it was just a beach and when I could get out (whenever I wasn't on probation). Girls were sweet - soft accents, soft lips, soft bodies, knees welded together, Southern gals, ya know. But times have changed and I've been gone, and maybe carpetbagging yankees have screwed Jax up like they do everything else, but hey .. who the heck am I.

It is (was) a good town.

Operation Dynamo started 70 years ago. My grandfather got captured on the retreat to Dunkirk.

Simon,

Your grandfather make it out of the detention camps? Where was he held?

I recall a stark statistical footnote on long-term survivability of different POWs throughout the war. A German POW captured by US or UK forces had a >95% chance of making it back home intact after the war. Statistically speaking, the place where a German male born between 1900 and 1930 had the greatest liklihood of surviving the war was in a US/UK POW camp (versus other POW camps, in uniformed service, etc.)

For a German captured by the Russians, <5% returned. Almost none of them returned until the 1950s.

On the flipside, US and UK soldiers captured by the Germans were generally treated 'well'. Most survived the war. Again, not so for Russian soldiers captured earlier.

Puppy update. Just about 10 days old, they have now opened their eyes and started to stumble around exploring their surroundings. They don't walk very well yet, except when their mother enters the box to feed them. Then, it's like watching a school of piranha smelling blood .

Yep. Saw the discussion on the BFTB forum.

Edited: You could substitute 'discussion' above with 'whining' at your own discretion.

Not to mention that only one of the battles was actually fought by Wallace.

But yes, I like the movie very much. It has just the right mix of action and comedy.

It seem to me (from an english book, not french source) that Wallace fought both at Stirling Bridge ( in the movie i see no bridge, no swamp, no marsh....) and Falkirk (and in there i see no hill and no woods were the scots were scattered and defeated...).
So not to argue, but are you sure Wallace was only at one of them ?

What i could tell is that Wallace would have looked like more like Bruce in the movie: he was a small aristocrat and landowner, on the "continental" model that spread in Europe at XIIcentury; he was not like the Highlander described...and he was not an Highlander (was he not from ....Ah damn, can't remenber the shire near Glasgow ) .
AND there never was some "Prima Nocte" (first night) for the lord of a land !
This is supposed to be a legend build by the historian of 19th century, mostly in France (don't know about English historian) to "charge guilty" the "old regime"of the nobles and kings.

and i still ike Sophie Marceau

Yes, you are right about Falkirk.

I've never seen any hard figures for it, but I would guess that most prisoners captured before 1943 died before 1945. The security apparatus didnt mess around.

Is this true Eric? What exactly is "heavy legs"?

I don't know about how the average Frenchman terms them, but in the bike racing world (greatly influenced by the French), the term is used to describe a situation where your legs have built up so much lactic acid that the muscles don't want to respond as they normally do. In this case, your "fast twitch" isn't twitching as fast as usual, thus the feeling that your legs are "heavy".

This can happen in the latter miles of a long day in the saddle, but is more often used to describe the situation in when the buildup comes from several days of exertion - such as in a multi-day stage race, or a multi-day hike or some such effort. You get up in the morning and don't have your usual "spring" in your legs - they feel "heavy" and "sluggish".
