And if there is spousal disapproval, you could point out "It's not a sports car!".

And Steve said I could!

Exactly! A friend of mine used to use the "I never had one as a child" excuse whenever he wanted some toy, and his spouse disapproved.

BTW UNP for me!!!!!!

All those things sound great, Steve! If there were time for me to kick your *** in a hotseat scenario of AE, that could be interesting too. Shouldn't take us more than a few minutes.

OK. Obviously your not thinking Grand Campaign. I suspect Miss Emily is awaiting me.

Obviously you don't know about "The Seagull scourge"!

I used to live in the Pacific Palisades-between Santa Monica and Malibu, CA. Nice place to live, but 'the seagull scourge' would befoul your vehicle in the parking lot at times.

Is this the seagull scourge to which you refer?

Sort of. I'd imagine that they would be far more effective then SOC's on CAP.

There's one in the Food Lion parking lot near work. It's like living Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. Truly freaky.

What did you think of "The Fleet That Had To Die" by Richard Hough? I read that when I was in junior high, so I don't recall too much of the details...

Morning Tithe.....

Can't comment as i've not read the book. Sounds interesting though. Just about done with Tsar's last Armada (75%), Tsunshima the main event is over and now author is recounting the flight of the survivors which led to the famous surrender the next day and capture of the biggest prize (Orel)

Again i can see the validity of some negative complaints. Description of the battle itself is very sparce on details and devotes alot of attention to what Rozh. was doing (which was basically wandering around in a daze) or describing the carnage aboard one or more of the modern battleships in very colorful language. (i.e. very much like Hornfisher's recount of Savo Island)

It is disapointing but, in compensation there is both Rising Sun, Tumbling Bear as well as "Kaigun" for a more technical description of the battle. In the end i cut this author slack because when it comes down to it.....the book is more about the men and the voyage, not Tsunshima the battle. So i'm not gnashing my teeth. I think the author does a great job of immersing the reader and accusations that his English was typical of a Russian who had emmigrated during the cold war era (Think "Boris" from Bullwinkle) are totally unfounded. Author's english is on a par with our dear Termy's command of the language. I only detected one outright error. (GOSH!)

Author may be guilty of being a little too sympathetic towards Roszh. but it is hard not to be. The voyage alone was a mounumental undertaking and this with a hodge podge collection of ships and not the most efficient of crews. Author's descriptions of the battle though weight (IMO) a little too heavily on the limited ability of Rozh (or anyone) to control his ships admist hits and smoke/flame and the limited vision of the conning tower. It appears very certainly that Rozh's fighting spirit was lacking and he "gave up" to fate.

One very good technical point unrelated by any other book (including Kaigun IIRC), is that the a possible reason for the disordered Russian line at the battle's start and at the point where Togo's flagship was most vulnerable as he tried to cross the T and circle back, that Rozh had allegedly ordered a change of formation from Line Ahead to Line Abreast due to having spotted a line of torpedo boats cutting across his path. The lack of squadron hegamony combined with poor training in some key ships, led to the whole thing falling apart and Rozh cancelling the order. The Russian line was in the process of reforming when fire was opened by both sides, so Mikasa got off lightly while many Russian ships fire was masked allowing concentrated Japanese fire on the lead ships.

On the negative side, author is absolutely enamored of Japanese Shimose shells and basically puts forth the age old argument that HE shells were devestatingly effective against armored ships. True in the case of the Russians due to their condition, but the author fails to balance this by more definitively pointing out that it was the sheer weight of shells that did the job, not so much the Shimose which had some defects. In the end it's good AP that quickly sinks ships. Had the Russian ships not been so loaded down, decrepid and flammable, it would not have been so dramatic an effect.

But it makes for dramatic reading.

Glad to see you're here, Leo. How's tricks?

Tricks?

Yeah. He wants to know if your "turning tricks" on the side.

No seriously , he's wondering "How are you"? (you've got to love American slang. BTW, you don't want to know about "Turning tricks".)

Just an expression. "What's going on?"; "How's things?"; "What's up?"; "What be the haps?"; "What it be, homey?"; "Dude?"; "S'up?" are all synonymous with casual expressions of friendly inquiry into another's goings on.

RGR!

I was aware only of "turning tricks" (i.e. that was the only slang I knew about that mentions "tricks")...

Hi all,

I don't know... I really don't know... but this sends shivers down my spine...

quote:

150 human animal hybrids grown in UK labs: Embryos have been produced secretively for the past three years

By Daily Mail UK

Scientists have created more than 150 human-animal hybrid embryos in British laboratories.

The hybrids have been produced secretively over the past three years by researchers looking into possible cures for a wide range of diseases.

The revelation comes just a day after a committee of scientists warned of a nightmare ‘Planet of the Apes’ scenario in which work on human-animal creations goes too far.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority is currently considering whether donors can be paid for their services:

Last night a campaigner against the excesses of medical research said he was disgusted that scientists were ‘dabbling in the grotesque’.

Figures seen by the Daily Mail show that 155 ‘admixed’ embryos, containing both human and animal genetic material, have been created since the introduction of the 2008 Human Fertilisation Embryology Act.

This legalised the creation of a variety of hybrids, including an animal egg fertilised by a human sperm; ‘cybrids’, in which a human nucleus is implanted into an animal cell; and ‘chimeras’, in which human cells are mixed with animal embryos.

Scientists say the techniques can be used to develop embryonic stem cells which can be used to treat a range of incurable illnesses.

Three labs in the UK – at King’s College London, Newcastle University and Warwick University – were granted licences to carry out the research after the Act came into force.

All have now stopped creating hybrid embryos due to a lack of funding, but scientists believe that there will be more such work in the future.

The figure was revealed to crossbench peer Lord Alton following a Parliamentary question.

Research centre: Warwick University has been growing animal human hybrids over the last three years:

Last night he said: ‘I argued in Parliament against the creation of human- animal hybrids as a matter of principle. None of the scientists who appeared before us could give us any justification in terms of treatment.

‘Ethically it can never be justifiable – it discredits us as a country. It is dabbling in the grotesque.

‘At every stage the justification from scientists has been: if only you allow us to do this, we will find cures for every illness known to mankind. This is emotional blackmail.

‘Of the 80 treatments and cures which have come about from stem cells, all have come from adult stem cells – not embryonic ones.
‘On moral and ethical grounds this fails; and on scientific and medical ones too.’

Josephine Quintavalle, of pro-life group Comment on Reproductive Ethics, said: ‘I am aghast that this is going on and we didn’t know anything about it.

‘Why have they kept this a secret? If they are proud of what they are doing, why do we need to ask Parliamentary questions for this to come to light?

‘The problem with many scientists is that they want to do things because they want to experiment. That is not a good enough rationale.’

Test centre: Newcastle University was another site where human animal hybrid testing was being undertaken:

Earlier this week, a group of leading scientists warned about ‘Planet of the Apes’ experiments. They called for new rules to prevent lab animals being given human attributes, for example by injecting human stem cells into the brains of primates.

But the lead author of their report, Professor Robin Lovell-Badge, from the Medical Research Council’ s National Institute for Medical Research, said the scientists were not concerned about human-animal hybrid embryos because by law these have to be destroyed within 14 days.

He said: ‘The reason for doing these experiments is to understand more about early human development and come up with ways of curing serious diseases, and as a scientist I feel there is a moral imperative to pursue this research.

‘As long as we have sufficient controls – as we do in this country – we should be proud of the research.’

However, he called for stricter controls on another type of embryo research, in which animal embryos are implanted with a small amount of human genetic material.

Human-animal hybrids are also created in other countries, many of which have little or no regulation.

Yes. One thing I learned was that having a CAP (ball cap, etc.) of any sort on was a good idea to defend against the seagull scourge.

Afternoon tithe... Mrs Divepac just bought a set of Italian glass Coffee/tea mugs, I was a bit sceptical to start with. But must now admit that the new cups are comfortable to use, and make the coffee taste better. Funny old world sometime, and things are never what they seem methinks today.

Hi all,

Guys have you seen the 1080p HD trailer for upcoming "Battlefield 3" game?

"Battlefield 3 - E3 2011 Thunder Run Tank Gameplay Trailer"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PL-B7nf94WU

The graphics are amazing (although the gameplay is, expectedly, arcade)!

morning tithe.

Finished Zimm's book last night on Pearl Harbor. If i were to summarize it in as short an amount of words as possible:

Those poor dumb Japanese......led by that poor dumb Yamamoto.......

I have to wonder if there are people in Japan who ask themselves......."will US (or western) authors ever tire of publishing books on WWII that take on a tone of either cackling self congratulation or contemptous "re-evaluations" of OPFORCE battles and campaigns?" Its like i said a month ago, it was actually a refreshing change to read a book by said western author (Hastings in this case - Armageddon) where he just comes plain out and says..."look....this Axis force was better at this than the western democracies"

Much as i hate to quote my ex.......she had a point when she said. "It all happened over 60 years ago....GET OVER IT"

I can add to that. "WE WON.....now GET OVER IT"

I guess though, its like people arguing over their favorite sports teams.
