ORIGINAL: Apollo11 Hi all, Something for John... This is "Prana" - the most beautiful yacht I have ever seen with my own eyes... I took the pictures with my iPhone at night (hence not so good quality)... If I am not mistaken 1 week on her costs 250.000 $ (yep two hundred and fifty thousands US dollars )... 51.70 m (170 ft) New Zealand Alloy Yachts Dubois Naval Architects 2006 Leo "Apollo11" Wow. 51.7m and single mast. Wow. Back in the day, that would have been 3 masts .... I think a lot of it is ‘my winkie is bigger’. I, too, would have liked to see it as a schooner-type, with full-batten, America’s Cup-style high batten, square top, sails. What they got now is just too tall for a luxury yacht. The mast is well into the 30 meter line and although there is better breeze up there, there’s not enough useable sail area on a Marconi rigged sloop to do anything but make ya tippy. And the keel moments aren’t deep enough to compensate. Admittedly, the Marconi points higher, but you need a crew that knows what it’s doing and people don’t seriously race these things either. A schooner-type would actually give ya more useable sail area, be less tippy, and work better with the semi shoal draft keel. And the sticks would be lower aspect, and less prone to cracking and breaking in a blow. Put a schooner rig on that puppy and she’ll rape your lizard on any point of sail except hard on the nose (and luxury passengers aren’t into that degree of excitement, anyway). Maybe one day some gazillionaire will kick my butt out of retirement and say “Ok, bigmouth, show me what you got. whip it, but whip it good.” I can do up the Dubois profile with my ideas of rig and keel, if anyone’s interested (and has a gazillionaire friend that wants to take a chance). Btw, did you know that 175’ is the length between perps of the USS Constitution?
