I wish they'd just leave things alone and come up with some original ideas.

But lets not forget rugby and Aussie rules football either. I mean, I realize that there are some adverse effects to be expected from all the blood rushing to your head when you spend the day hanging upside down off the bottom end of the world, but really...

As for you, Per, I would not be casting stones in your position. Tell us a little about Brännboll, would you? And besides, you guys are a bit too close to Finland and that whole ski jumping and wife tossing thing for comfort.

Sorry to hear that the fires are ongoing, Reg. I looked at a wildfire map last week and it (Australia) was nearly confluent fires. Very sad. Any rain on the forecast?

No significant rain in the foreseeable future for this area. They said they are looking at a two week firefighting campaign. Having said that it looks like they are on top of things at the moment with no inhabited areas currently under threat so with a bit of luck it will stay that way.

We are the designated relief center for the area and the local show grounds are full of campers and caravans. Hopefully they will have somewhere to go back to afterwards.....

Oh Good Grief.......

I was planning to travel to Queensland this week as my father has been ill and what do I see on the news, ex-tropical cyclone Oswald is off the east Australian coast generating mini-tornados and extensive flooding in my home town. My family are all OK but apparently the garden took a thrashing.... It will probably be over (maybe) by the time I head up the later in the week but if experiences in the past are any indication the road network will have taken a beating.

Edit: If you see the roof off my uncles shed, please let him know as it has gone and there is no sign of it anywhere.....

Australia is certainly a land of extremes.... One minute you're dodging bushfires and the next you are dodging floods!! Looks like it will be be a fun trip across New South Wales...

Hopefully it will help the bushfire situation down here in the southern states. For your info the weather change that came through this week was milder than expected and the fire authorities successfully contained the fire within the containment lines and no more damage was done though the fire is still burning in the mountains. The final cost was 21 homes destroyed and one life lost but it could have been far, far worse without the efforts of the firefighters. Flood is devastating but nothing is as frightening as a big fire!!

I was talking to a local dairy farmer last night and he said the fire passed down his boundary fence but didn't come onto his property so he was fortunate that he didn't lose any stock or property. However, the electricity infrastructure was burnt out and it was three days before the they could bring in a diesel generator to power the dairy and milk the herd. They said the poor animals were fit to explode and they will probably have veterinary issues for a while.

Goodness, isn't life interesting!!!

The joke is based on the premise that Bradford are currently playing in the fourth tier of the English football league whilst Aston Villa are playing in the top tier of the league. In a recent cup match Bradfor managed to beat Villa and reach the final of the cup, thus becoming the first team from the fourth tier to reach a major final in I believe) over 50 years.

I'm not an expert on the Bradford team, but I would assume that before he became a professional footballer the gentleman in question was previously employed by a food emporium to replenish the consumables purchased from their erstwhile establishment and that this employment was deemed to be more challenging than scoring a goal against Aston Villa. In effect, the Bradford supporters are mocking their previous opponents sporting abilities.

EDIT:
For further clarification:
Aston Villa are, in theory at least, the 17th best team in England at this moment.
Bradford are the 78th ranked team.

These relative positions however do not take into account the vast gulf in finances etc between the two. It is quite possible for a team to finish bottom of the Premier League and earn more in prize money than the team who finish as winners of the Championship (2nd tier) let alone a team who are way down where Bradford are. Indeed, it is not uncommon for one player to be paid more in a month playing for a Premier League team than an entire team receives further down the league.

Hi all,

Dear God... what on Earth are we becoming... this "PC" nonsense is really incomprehensible...

Don't mention the ***: Censorship row as BBC cuts the Major's 'racist' lines from classic Fawlty Towers episode

By Daily Mail UK

- Viewers complain that only the 'terminally thin-skinned' could be offended by the character
- BBC said it was edited to suit a family audience to reflect changing attitudes

It is the episode of Fawlty Towers best remembered for the line ‘Don’t mention the war’ and John Cleese’s silly walk when impersonating Hitler.

The references have proved controversial before, but when The Germans was repeated on BBC2 on Sunday evening it wasn’t our European neighbours that the corporation was worried about offending.

Instead, the episode was edited to omit racist language – only for some viewers to then complain that the BBC was ‘airbrushing history’.

'Don't mention the war': John Cleese as Basil Fawlty giving an Adolf Hitler impression to German guests, with Polly in the background played by Connie Booth:

The Germans episode of Fawlty Towers was voted number 11 in Channel 4's One Hundred Greatest TV Moments in 1999:

In one scene one of the hotel’s permanent residents, Major Gowen, uses derogatory terms to describe black people. It was included in the episode’s first airing in October 1975, but this time around the major’s words were edited out.

The scene involves Basil Fawlty and the major, played by actor Ballard Berkeley, exchanging their normal pleasantries before the conversation moves on to Basil’s wife Sybil and women in general.

The major tells Fawlty about the time he took a woman to see India play cricket at the Oval. He then says: ‘The strange thing was, throughout the morning she kept referring to the Indians as niggers. “No, no, no,” I said, “the niggers are the West Indians. These people are wogs”.’

Several years ago there were concerns that the episode would never be shown again because of the offensive words. However, recent editions of The Complete Fawlty Towers DVD, distributed by BBC Worldwide, have not been edited and included the segment that was cut by the BBC on Sunday.

Some fans took to the BBC’s Points Of View message board yesterday to say they ‘despaired’ at the ‘unnecessary’ editing.

One wrote: ‘You can’t airbrush history away and I doubt if anyone but the terminally thin-skinned could be offended by the major, a character we’re clearly supposed to laugh at rather than with.’

Ballard Berkeley as the Major Gowen, who makes the offensive remark. Viewers said that the 'bigoted character' was meant to be laughed at - not with:

Another posted: ‘The point is that the major is a racist old bigot, incongruous with modern society – even in the Seventies. The audience isn’t supposed to agree with him, they’re supposed to laugh at him. The whole episode is about xenophobia in various forms – it’s social satire. I instinctively dislike the airbrushing of history.’

A third viewer wrote: ‘So how sad BBC you have finally succumbed and lost the guts to transmit the episode of Fawlty Towers “The Germans” in its original form. The major’s speech of his experience of going out with a woman to the Oval is one of the funniest things ever.

‘You edited it because it includes the W-word and the N-word. Let’s face it, the whole episode and much of Fawlty Towers is racist by today’s standards and misogynistic, but above all it is hilarious.

‘We are all grown up, you know. We, the vast majority of us, can laugh at this without being racists.

‘It’s about time you grew up BBC, and trusted your audience. We know what is acceptable and what is not and what is funny and why, and the fact it is of a time which is now long past. We understand context, the major is a figure of fun, he doesn’t whip up hatred.’

Fawlty Towers was written by and starred Cleese and his then wife Connie Booth. The Germans was the sixth episode of the 12 that were made and was voted number 11 in Channel 4’s One Hundred Greatest TV Moments in 1999.

The series has continued to entertain families since being made in the 1970s and was in 2000 voted by industry professionals to be the best British series of all time.

A BBC spokesman said: ‘We are very proud of Fawlty Towers and its contribution to British television comedy.

‘But public attitudes have changed significantly since it was made and it was decided to make some minor changes, with the consent of John Cleese’s management, to allow the episode to transmit to a family audience at 7.30pm on BBC2.’

Ah, thank you! So a bunch of guys in the neighborhood got together for a game of football...and ended up beating one of the top teams in the country.

So does this mean that Bradford goes up to the top league now? And how did they end up playing each other anyway? Theoretically is sounds like a far gone conclusion.

Yeah, I know. Can't seem to find a Mel Brooks film without half the audio cut out.

We are becomming a kinder, gentler, more socially sensitive and inclusive society, where all forms of parody, farce, burlesque, and carictature, containing any potentially offensive content that might be misunderstood by a voting age cretin, must be rigorously supressed by the authorities. Unless, of course, the offensive content applies to the authorities' opposition.

In the US, there is a big furor over the words niggard and niggardly, because they raise suggestions of a bad word. It is being proposed that they be put on the list of Hate Speech words and restricted accordingly. Can you imagine the thousands of classic books that will have to be pulled from library shelves and put in the restricted section, because they contain Hate Speech? Woof!!!

But, after all, it's all about the children. Grand Theft Auto's ok, but we must protect them from "... and they were worthy of the guerdon, and it was no niggard hand that granted it."

Sorry, I'm just an old classicist that's going to have to ex-pat. JWE

My English neighbor is a bit down this morning, his English soccer team (Liverpool I think)was beaten my a lowly team called Oldham (I think) last night. His chin is just about dragging on the ground, but I am filled with joy, as he is a bit up himself sometimes.

I wouldn't call Villa a top team. It's just how the cup competitions work over here. They pit teams from different leagues against each other so it's not unusual to see lower level teams playing against Premier League sides. The cups are completely independent of the league competitions, success in a cup has no bearing on a team's position in the league.

I'm not sure how things work over there and whether you have separate cup competitions? It's my understanding that a professional sporting competition has one league (MLS, NBA etc) and that's your lot? As I understand it, your leagues are split along roughly geographical lines but to all intents and purposes the MLS Eastern and Western divisions are, by design, effectively on an equal footing. I assume things are the same for hockey, basketball and rugby with pads as well?

You should poke him while he's feeling down. Maybe ask why Liverpool have used the name of the city when they are the second best team in Liverpool? Or ask when they'll buy Stewart Downing a right foot. Or just point out what an excellent investment Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Andy Carroll turned out to be.

Maybe mention that you've heard they are thinking about linking up with a bigger team, like Everton.

For perspective, Liverpool are 7th in the league. Oldham are the equivalent of 63rd and near the bottom of their division.

I know youve explained it before, but I still find English football very confusing.

The only US sport I follow with regularity is basketball, where the league is divided along geographical lines, but I think both baseball and football have 2 sub-leagues the winners of which play each other in the national championship.

Most Liverpool fans are, a bit like Man U fans.

Isnt that true for most Scousers, independent of football?

Ha ha!

Who? What?

It's an English Soccer thing, sort of like American Apple pie.

So I gathered, but whats the joke?

Sigh... Mice are so one dimensional, it's wasn't a joke, it was a metaphor.

And emus are too self centered. I was referring to Simon's comment, not yours.
