I remember getting into trouble from my mum, because I was wearing a pin from Marlboro. I tried to convince her it was not the cigarettes but the racing team McLaren.
Got a few as freebies in Belgium at the 1992 Race.

In the end I had to remove it.

Was there a team that did not have tobacco sponsorship back in those days? The sponsor more or less dictated what colour the cars were to be.

I also remember BAR having two different colours due to sponsors, when they started F1. They had to change that later. Not sure why. I'll have to Google it or someone here will tell me faster than I can Google.

Now you mention it, I think you are right, the cars from the same team suddenly had to be the same colour - although obviously being BAR/Honda it was not done for financial reasons. No doubt all part of Bernie's bid to make the F1 show more professional...

In the 'old days' with cash strapped teams you sometimes had different colour cars - I remember the Arrows in 1983 with Boutsen and Surer sponsored by different companies; Louis de Poortere (white) and Nordica/Barclay (Beige and Blue).

As for sponsors - when I first got tentatively into F1 (1976/77) the cars were sponsored by the likes of:
Fiat (Ferrari)
Renault (Renault)
Martini (Brabham)
Marlboro (McLaren)
Gitanes (Ligier)
Elf (Tyrrell)
First National City (Penske)
JPS (Lotus)
Beta (March)
Copersucar (Fittipaldi)
Durex (Surtees)
UOP(Shadow)
Tissot (Ensign)
Penthouse/Rizla (Hesketh)
Rotary (BRM)
ATS (ATS)
Rothmans (March)

...and more 'modern' Ligier cars.

I had a Scalextric car of the above Ligier. Ahhhh, the days when you could advertise cigarettes on a car....

Apparently as I've seen so many cig advertising in my years of watching F1 I should be a chain smoking high risk cancer wreck .... but have actually never smoked in my life.

Go figure:)
warspite1

I had that beautiful car too - but I do not recall it having Gitanes sponsorship. I thought it just said Ligier.

I thought the last Scalextric cars with tobacco sponsorship were the Lotus 77 and the March 771 (very briefly) which had JPS and Rothmans and are collectors items as a result.

I only remember the car, not the sponsorship on the model. I was referring to cig sponsor on real car:).

They launched with 555 and Lucky Strike as a different sponsor on each car. Bernie stopped that as by then it was against the rules. BAR then did the zipper down the middle with 555 in blue on one side then Lucky Strike white/red the other side. Oh boy, did that make it a cfap looking car, lol

Loved that colour combo - and Boutsen and Surer had great crash helmets. This looks remarkably like Berger so must be 1985.

Well to kick the ball rolling here is one of my faves - Ivan Capelli.

Reason: the colours of the Italian flag and the Azurri Blue make a great combination - and perfect for an Italian driver.

Sorry, I should have said race fans - doesn't have to be F1.

For me - and this is just personal opinion - I did not like - and still really dislike - the idea of changing crash helmet designs; whether that be for sponsor reasons (which I believe was the case with Rick Mears and Pennzoil) or because a driver can't decide on one design.

As Martin Brundle says, you don't change your signature - so why your crash helmet which is so distinctive to you?

Anyways, that's just a personal pet peeve

Keep 'em coming folks - there are so many good ones

Another of my faves - the striking black and reddy/orange of Piercarlo Ghinzani looked good in any car - but he will always be associated with Osella for me - and that colour combo looked great with the Kelemata sponsored car

The car he drove is one of the best looking, ever. And the helmet looks quite nice as well.

It is sad that so many race drivers has left us way to early.

Very nice looking helmet.

Not that fond of the blue car. But he looks very cool in the white car.

Cool - such a great circuit. Love the hairpin that's a million miles wide and so makes for some great opening laps!

Regarding the question on Vettel having a chance in 2015 following Hungary win.

My experience tells me no. The press are hyping up the F1 season after Hungary. But the fact is, the Mercedes advantage (engine) is too much, Hungary has short straights and plenty of corners. That's why Red Bull did well too - that Renault engine is rubbish, but he Newey chassis:).

Well go to Spa, Mercedes will make it a 'cake walk'. That's my view on things.

Now what did I tell you:)

warspite1

Well let's just hope that confidence was not mis-placed......

With Rosberg having to go back to the old engine - Lewis can't be exactly
100% confident on the reliability front with this revised engine.

So Mercedes have now used all their development tokens. I don't know if/when Ferrari will use their remaining tokens - but they were damn close in qualifying? I still don't think this is anything like over.....

I've wondered about those crash helmets. My job requires me to wear a rubber suit and a safety helmet with a flap down plastic visor. It is extremely uncomfortable as sweat rolls off down into my eyes and the visor fogs up and I can't see. These guys must experience something similar or do they have some kind of battery poweredair flow system in their helmet?

Two more faves from yesterjour. Both showing the great effect achieved by putting Red and White together.

Clay Regazonni's I liked as it reflected the Swiss national colours and indeed the white cross appears at the front.

As much as I could not stand Nelson Piquet, he had a very distinctive and striking teardrop helmet design.

So Volkswagen - or one of their brands - will be entering F1 by buying the Red Bull team. Doesn't say what will happen to Toro Rosso.....

Glad to hear VW will be in F1. This has been a rumor for years. They will probably be racing as Audi. If they buy both teams, perhaps they will have the other team race as Porsche...

Yes it's been rumoured, but with Chairman Ferdinand Piech's known hostility to such a thing, there has never been any substance to the rumours. With Piech's recent resignation, things seem to have changed for the better.

If it happens VW making an engine, companies they own and could badge as are:-
Porsche, Audi, VW, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti, Seat, Skoda. I think that's it. But that engine could be 2018 debut apparently.

In the meantime, Lotus have 1 week to sort themselves out or tax people in UK will close them down. They've just been to court and been given 1 week only to pay tax etc they owe in UK - no more chances they've been told.

F1 is in a right mess at the moment if you ask me!
