On the 24th the bombing against a few forward tank units goes much better. I'm still concerned about the Peggy (T) strikes which aren't even as effective as the Jills I've got on in spite of better pilots and bomb loads. Hmmmmmmm.

The Allies now have 2E in China and go for Shanghai. Georges on LR CAP duty bleed over and get a handful of the P-51D escorts. Very nice. I'll wait and see how persistent these strikes are before assigning more to hit them.

In the South the Allies move forward toward Saigon. I've decided to give up the base to save the units, even though it would be good territory to fight in. It's not good enough. I'll bring the division there to Shanghai and all but a few small units will evacuate along the rails. I'lll keep just enough to avoid losing bases to Para assault and force the Allies to walk as far as possible. The loss of Shanghai will mean the Allies will take a lead for the first time in VPs starting in early June.

Here is the situation in the North. The hexes with targets are the forward tank units. I'll keep hitting them until he figures out how to better LR CAP them or gets bases closer to protect them. I'd like to keep the rail as long as possible and I'm sure he'd like to sever it as quickly as he can.

Here is the South. The Allies march forward, and should be sending the big stack to Udon Thani soon. There is about 50k there now, and forces are marching toward Viennetiane and down toward Vinh. All big units will be out by tomorrow toward China and the smaller following on within days. Then a skeleton crew will hold the Indochinese rail line and zip out if they can in succession as the Allies approach.

I'm beginning to think of where to hold in China. Nanning is an obvious choice. I've got level 6 forts there. I'll have to put some blocks up the road toward Chungking for sure. It's good territory. The Chinese look to be shifting now too, and will add in I'm sure. I need to plug a few deeper gaps.

This isn't really consequential. He already has 4-5 bases in the area, and although this is a VP gain and a decent base, my focus is on the much more important Shanghai, as well as the LOC to Central China from Hangchow to Changsha and Wuchang. I evacuated all but this poor Chinese RGC unit, and I should have moved that, but it would have been too slow to save I think.

Shanghai is now up to 2,200AV with forts 7, and 60k supply. Trying for 100k supply, if I have time, and more CD guns trying to move over as well. Should get to 2,500AV.

IMO, you need to be focused on the VP situation.

The single biggest haul of possible VPs for the Allies here lie in the destruction of your troops. Base VP's are not insignificant, but less than the value were all your devices in China to be destroyed.

To that end, I think there needs to be a two-stage emphasis for your plans regarding the land war in China.

1. Looking at delaying the fall of major VP bases.
2. Withdrawing troops to Manchuria/Korea to delay the Soviet advance as much as possible.

In practical terms, for #1 that means stuffing the x2 and x3 hexes full of units you can afford to lose. Mid-range EXP, depleted units, poor TOE's - ram them into the cities.

Nanning is worth 60 VP's to Japan, and 6 to the Allies. Hong Kong is worth 160 and 640(!) to the Allies. Plus, it is x3 terrian. Plus it has a shipyard to enable upgrade/repair of Allied ships.

For the second point, it's unit preservation to enable you to enact #1 in Manchuria.

This is the numbers game that needs to drive IJA strategy now - festungs to delay bases that are going to fall soon, while withdrawing enough to make you do it further back as well.

Good luck!

Thanks. As always, I appreciate your thoughts on this.

I'm completely focused on the VP situation and that is driving virtually all of my strategies and tactics. The only other consideration I'm working with is delay. This also could have a big VP impact in several ways.

Firstly in giving the economy time to build more reserves, supply and HI before being crushed eventually.

Secondly in reducing the speed of Allied VP gains and putting pressure on to reach certain targets, but also to potentially redirect away from high value VP targets if the delay is too prohibitive. (I'm thinking Chungking here).

Finally, if everything takes longer to achieve, even if I lose some VPs in the process, it could make defence of other areas more secure, thus more VP Balanced by costing the Allies more to attack. More supply added, more forts built or units added/fleshed out.

Nanning is a river crossing. He has no idea what the fort there are currently. They're at 6 but could even move to 7 by the time of a crossing if I push. I also have a division sitting dug in NW of Nanning along the yellow road crossing. It has level 5 forts in x3 territory. Id love the Chinese to find that out the hard way.

He could go around Nanning, but that would be a longer journey without good roads to use.

I have to make stands in places that offer the possibility of a VP positive result. I'm not worried about the Soviets yet. That is months away. I'm worried about China now. I'd like to gain VPs in China where the terrain is good, then consider if there is anything left to fight the Soviets.

Nanning is going to get flanked by Allied units moving south-west of it through the countryside. They'll take Pakhoi, Kwangchown and before you know it there's Allied tanks in Wuchow and the south flank is gone.

For an Allied army marching from Indochina, I'd recommend defending between Nanning and Hanoi, and leave Nanning as the fall-back position once your troops have been pushed back. The timeline for the battle in my mind is that you hold for a week or two in the jungle E of Lang Song, get pushed into the open. You then get a terrible bombing and a worse Allied pursuit, but the Allied units then barrel into your 6 forts at Nanning and get bloodied. Making an immediate beeline for Nanning is an indication of prepared defences and would be begging for a flanking march SE.

However, I think that's too far forward for your situation, with the Allies in Central China.

Instead, I'd go deeper in to China and really play the VP game.

Tuyun-Kweiyang to deny an easy recapture of Chungking. Another force at Kweilin to block a drive on Changsha and a third force at Kukong to try and block any recapture of the coastal Chinese bases.

All these options have good road (and in two cases rail) links to Central China that you can use to bug out if you need to.

I completely get what you're trying to say and it's a good point on the psychology to not go direct to Nanning. I know that I've stymied this massive Allied army already, and some of it may not even be going this way since I've got some heading for Saigon, some on Malaya and some (most likely) getting ready to land amphibiously somewhere.

If I can hold, as you say for two weeks or so, that would set up much more of the defences inside China. I don't want to give up the Nanning-Liuchow area too quickly. There is a lot of delay potential there and to the North where the Chinese are marching.

I think if I can set this up and build a fort or two, I could hold and make him go around. There is a lot of good flak with this group so air strikes will be tough for the Allies too.

A good day in the air. Some strikes beginning to destroy tanks in the clear in China. The Allies keep pushing armor forward with no AA to cover.

Down South air transport is bringing our trapped troops at Chumpon back to both Saigon and Singers. I'll send most to Palembang and Singers eventually.

More goodness in the air. Still wondering where the Allies are heading on the ground. Tanks that were heading toward Sinyang to the NW have turned back in the face of our air strikes, as have the ones heading North. Allied units seem to be circling around i the hub of bases surrounding Hangchow/Shanghai. Maybe they'll try to isolate this area? That's okay by me if it means fighting in x3 or x4 with forts at Shanghai and also having time to set up more defensive lines further back.

A rear guard SNLF is destroyed on the approach to Vinh as the Allies continue to flood forward. All IJA troops are away and moving to Lang Son. There will be skeleton forces along the rail so each stop must be taken in turn.

Fuel, oil and resources continue to flood North through the gap around the Bonins to Tokyo. A DD force hits a supply drop at Marcus, but that's all the Allies are doing for now to stop this vital supply route from operating.

May 28-29, 1945

The next two days are good again in the air, but ominous on the ground. The Allies come directly toward the block created by our tank divisions and another ID, and they show the effects of late war Allied firepower advantage. A lot more is 3-4 days out for the IJA, but I can't tell what the Allies have coming in. This is where the mediocre IJ recon doesn't help.

As it turns out on the 29th two Marine IDs have also moved in. This will be trouble. If I can reinforce I could hold here, but I have a feeling I'll be flying in a day or two. Ill plan to set up shop on the next x3 hex with about 2,500AV and a bit more arty help there too.

Georges and Ki-83 continue to wreck havoc on the Allies CAP. Both days they get positive results as the Allies try to fly out of Nanking with it's damaged fields.

Ok. Back from Florence and back at it. A bit of a slowdown as I forgot my laptop cord on the trip. Doh!

A lot of action on the 30th. The Allies continue to pound troops in the x3 near Wuhu with 2E and 1E bombers. I set some LR CAP from Hangchow and they got to the 1E both in the morning and the afternoon. By the afternoon though the escorts were gone and the Allies lost a lot of bombers.

This hex is looking tough to hold though now as the Allies have moved in several more divisions for just over 3k AV. My reinforcements won't arrive in time to add if there is a full DA or SA next turn, so I'm thinking I'll have to retreat. I want to make sure the 3rd and 4th tank divisions in particular are not completely shattered. There is another x3 hex just behind I'll try to set up in.

Small forward tank units continue to be reduced and I should end up destroying 2-4 of them completely. At least this will discourage quick movement forward.

Down South Ki-83 sweep Georgetown and wreck the lower CAP but take losses once the better divers arrive. Still a very good outcome. The Allies continue to move slowly down Malaya, across Indochina toward Saigon and down toward Vinh.

One of the Allies best DDs, the French Triomphant, raids Singers but ends up paying the ultimate price. She sticks around too close and is first bombed by Jakes and then sunk by I-30 with two torpedoes.

At this stage it's the little things that will keep Japan in the game. I've got to work to inflict damage on any troops or ships that stretch forward out of range of effective cover. It's a risky game that can also be exploited, so far the points it's still working.

The allies do attack near Wuhu and mess up one small ID pretty badly. There were only two in hex, and the tanks made it away clean. It makes me wonder if they could have held if the tanks were there since the outcome was only 3:1 even though they were outnumbered at 10:1 in terms of AV. Too close to call though. Better not to risk it if it means one smaller defeat and a potential to hold one hex back.

Reinforcements have arrived and begin to dig. There will be about 3500AV of good IDs and tanks in hex with some AA and good HQs, including the China Expeditionary Army in range.

Down South the Allies sweep Singers in turn, and the defence gets almost 1:1. Some good results everywhere but also I forgot to turn off the Ki-83 hitting Georgetown, and the smaller group gets the worst of it today by 1:2. The total as reported are an exact 1:1 on the day at 80 losses for both sides.

Over the HI the first strat bombing in a bit hits Nagaoka with a small strike, and about 3-5 B-29s are knocked down by combined CAP/flak.

June 1, 1945

It's June 1, 1945!!!

A huge milestone for me to get to June still leading in VPs. The Allies landed at Shikuka in early June 44 but have only achieved about 7k strat bombing points during this year. They're approaching and will likely move ahead in early June once Saigon is captured.

Supply is going down a bit more quickly than I'd like as so many troops are taking replacements and filling out after arriving. I'm going to slow that process now on the HI since there is no immediate threat of invasion there, and there are already a good number of [R] troops in place to defend any landing. Fort building has almost ceased on the HI but a few more spots must get to forts 6-7 before turning all of them off.

I'm still filling out Ha-43 engine factories to equal needs, and that will be more important now as the J7W will begin building this month. This plane will first set up at Tokyo and Osaka, then to other big industrial centres. I'll be making 60/month.

The IJN is still around, but very reduced. The fast KB is in an undisclosed location with the remaining fast surface ships, the two BC and the five remaining CA plus all of the best DDs. The slower CV/CVL/CVE are visible to Allied search in the inner sea area. Their CAP will add to Home Island defence and they'll look for strays if opportunities present themselves.

The remaining slow BBs are protecting Nagasaki from bombardments by the Allies.

Pilot training is happening faster than ever with all of the training groups. I've changed as many as I can into extra CAP kamikazes, and will continue to do that. I don't need all of the kami pilots these can train really, so I may even withdraw some after the first crop is ready.

The beginning of June goes well for the Japanese. More good sweeps of Chinese bases to draw CAP from the DS and surrounding areas. The Allies though get a good bombardment with the big guns at Shanghai, and a few sweeps hit tougher resistance. About 1:1 total on the day. The IJA ID still vulnerable to Allied attack does end up retreating and avoiding a slaughter near Wuhu.

Got a sub near Oosthaven. Nice when they're confined sunk.

Allied forward tanks take an empty Vinh. I won't bomb them here, but if they move toward Hanoi and get into the clear, I will. Small units will sacrificially slow the advance as pieces are flown out.

Only 3 more months to avoid an Allied auto victory.

The Soviets will automatically activate on 1 August 1945. In your position I would not wait until that date. In typical historical Japanese fashion I would launch a surprise attack on 30 or 31 July. The attack would focus on

(a) hitting his airfields to hit the parked bombers

(b) a small land offensive to cut the Trans Siberian railway at Mogocha or Skovorodino. Both those bases will have about a regt worth of defenders and you can park your attackers at the Japanese dot base Moho. With the 15kAV currently in Manchukuo it should be easy to rustle up a couple of divs for the operation.

Depending on whether you hit Vladivostok and if so the results ensuing, the second day could see a port strike against the newly activated (+1 day) Soviet fleet before it has been fully organised into task forces.

Activating the Soviets 1 or 2 days early is not that advantageous to the Allies and can be a good defensive move on your part if properly planned.

Alfred

Fantastic idea. I do have a lot of troops in Manchuria and about 2/3 of them are unknown to Allied recon and already in strat mode. I'm guessing cutting the rail would be more annoyance than deterrent at that point since the Soviets will have the majority of their troops staged to move over the border. Still, it'd be fun. The airstrikes would be very useful though.

A couple of caveats to add:

- What's the worth of maintaining air assets over Singapore at this late stage? I'd suggest drawing down your assets as much as possible and keeping a small cadre for LRCAP traps. Don't bother with defensive CAP and just fight a guerrilla air war from Sumatran air bases. Send the rest of the planes to Japan where they'll do more good.

- Regarding the strike on the Soviet fleet after activation: you can be sure that the Allies will have a ball of yarn CAP over Vladivostok. Massive sweeps by your best modern planes can net you a nice VP haul.

- Strategic control of the Sea of Japan and Tsushima/Fusan is imperative. If you lose it, it nearly doubles the length of coastline you need to protect.

- If you think it's a worthwhile target, I'd consider sending destroyer bombardment raids against the Allied bases off Okinawa and Ishigaki. Stack a couple of dive bomber squadrons on nearby bases in case the Allies take the bait and send ships south.

- The 60 days you have till August is time to get Manchuria and Korea absolutely locked down, if you haven't already. Pick your dispositions wisely. There's a lot of value in deploying just enough AV to hold of the Soviet armoured units and forcing them to wait for the infantry and arty to blast a path open. However you need to balance that with not dispersing your forces. I suggest you familiarise yourself with the Soviet arrival bases and deploy accordingly. In general, the eastern flank towards Vladivostok is a slow-burner, while the Soviet push from Outer Mongolia tends to build up speed quickly.

- From past experiences, I'd put extra emphasis on defending the region south-east of Hailar (abandon Hilar proper, fight to the south-east), at Arshaan, at Linshi and the yellow road between Arshaan and Linshi. The Arshaan-Linhsi area is where the bulk of the big Soviet tank corps will be deployed.

- Manchuria is more or less the last theatre where the Japanese are likely to have air superority. Maximizing that to get VP's from aircraft and ground bombing is going to help make up for your losses elsewhere. Flying your bomber fleets at 10-11k and carpet bombing Soviet units is going to be your best bet to generate VP's. Soviet units are worth half the VP's that Allied units are (1 VP = 6 devices), but I wouldn't let that concern you too much as the Soviets are going to be pushing forward into open terrain and their fighters tend to be short-legged.

- It's also the only theatre where you'll have naval superiority as well, but be careful! Soviet subs, mines and CD guns are no joke. If Soviet units move into coastal Japanese territory, then go to town on them with your fleet, but I'd really caution against striking Soviet bases as being a bad return.

- Flooding the sea of Japan with air ASW and search will be a requirement as well. The Sovs get 48 subs, scattered all over. At 10 VP a pop, it's worth it to sink a couple.

FWIW, I remain confident that you can weather the storm and prevent the auto-victory. You'll get horribly mauled, but I think preventing the Auto-vic is the real win here :)

Correct, definitely not a deterrent. The Soviet forces arrive pre activation at their historical jumping off locations, poised to immediately strike into key Manchurian territory. As such the move towards Skovorodino/Mogocha will have no immediate impact on the initial Soviet offensive which will roar out of the Borcza (sp) axis.

The point of the move is twofold. Firstly it will probably come as a shock to the Allies. Most players expect the Japanese to hunker down defensively to meet the powerful Soviet forces. Launching this small offensive demonstrates you are not going to be limited to passive positions but are prepared to engage in manoeuvre. This imposes some discipline on the Allied player who can't just assume they can neglect flanks, supply depots etc.

Secondly the rear area Soviet bases are not that well covered as the focus is very much on the shwerpunckt. If you can capture this Soviet territory (and it is probably only a 50:50 chance) it will have a limited impact on the logistics of the Soviet offensives crossing the Amur but more importantly it opens up the possibility of moving to Shilka and the important Chita base. Capture Chita (it won't be strongly defended) and now you really do start to imposes some constraints on the Borcza axis, both in logistical and air support terms.

This can all be easily stymied by the Soviets but will they actually weaken their offensives in order to do so. My guess is probably not initially but once you start menacing Chita that can't be ignored. Operating on the Trans Siberian railway means you will have the better transportation links with the attendant LCU speed benefits it confers. Ultimately what you throw into this offensive needs to be thought of as land "kamikazes" albeit with a much higher survival rate than real kamikaze air units. All made possible by currently having 15kAV in situ.

As to the air strikes, well Japanese bombers don't have the same payload as Allied bombers do plus if your opponent has been diligent he would have been building up his fortification levels, so don't expect an equivalent result to the Israeli strikes of 1967. Nonetheless they will achieve some results and certainly better than just waiting for the incoming Soviet air strikes. In August 1945 the Soviet air force has some good fighters. Remember to place a sub at any Soviet port you do decide to strike in order to retrieve downed pilots.

If you can gain air superiority over Manchuria it will go a long way towards evening the land combat against the powerful Soviet land forces. In fact you will be well rewarded in having some crack fighter units up there to meet the early Soviet offensives.

For a really far out idea, if you can scrounge up some paratroopers and very long range aircraft, you could look at dropping them onto some of those very isolated Soviet bases in the vicinity of Kamchatka (sp). They will have minimal Soviet garrisons and their supply levels will not be great,, so a preemptive drop might succeed, especially if you can sneak in some additional AV via Fast Transport. This however would be very iffy probably no better than a 10% chance of success (probably even less in sneaking in the Fast Transport). But then what else are you going to do with the KB. A Death Star still anchored in the East China Sea would allow the KB a quick run in (and equally quick run out) to cover any Fast Transports from Allied aircraft operating out of Sakhalin and Hokkaido.

The Allies appear to not be moving forward now toward our reinforced position North of Chusien after forcing the smaller blockade back. The IJA has managed to get some of the arty and AA from Burma which will march in from Changsha and has a good 3k AV blocking with about 2k AV in reserve.

The Allies seem to be happy to target air strikes to smaller concentrations of ground forces almost randomly. They're moderately effective, but haven't made a dent in any of the critical defensive areas with this tactic. I'm interested in the next stage here. Some vectors are open, but others have been reinforced. I've take from a few rear areas to do this and will now begin backfilling with recently arrived troops.

Sweeps go both ways today with a disastrous Ki-82 sweep to Nanking, and an equally bad Allied sweep of Wuchang. Hard to fathom how the P-47N got essentially 1:2 against a small number of N1K5 Georges in only a two layered low CAP.

Down South the Allies have invested and made a small attack on Saigon. That base will fall shortly and give the Allies their first VP lead since late 41. They take more territory around Indochina but haven't brought the major Army forward here yet. I'm beginning to wonder if he's decided to bring in amphibs and move by sea. That would be a tad more risky without owning Singers, but could provide a quick access to the soft underbelly of China.

The Allied bombing has some effect on the 4th, wiping out a good SNLF unit in strat mode, unfortunately. I'll quickly buy it back, but there goes it's experience level.

Not much else happening, as there is a lull in sweeps and troop movements. Is he waiting for something?

On the 5th some DDs go upriver and hit Hankow again. Annoying. I've put mines there but will now add them downriver to hopefully make this more costly.

A few more bases fall in Indochina.

I think the passage from the IO to the South China Sea is a vital defensive area, and an active Singers allows use and continued transport from the DEI. It also inhibits passage by the RN which would open up any part of the map South of Japan without the DS having to leave it's station in China. It's also a huge VP turn, and if I hold it well, I could force a costly campaign there.

I've got mostly second string IJAAF air groups here, with some from the mini-KB which is currently non-operational. If I also keep Johore Baru then I've got a mini rail line and mutually supporting bases. I think I can do that for a good while. Johore is not easily bombarded either since ships would have to move through Singers. The more I wear out Allied air forces here the less they'll have for the North and China, which is the more important area for them to be sweeping and bombing now.

Dan has a tendency to focus assets, but leaves large swathes of territory untouched. If he's going to do that then I should take advantage and force him to move on those areas eventually, opening the position and weakening each individual Allied node location.

quote:

- Regarding the strike on the Soviet fleet after activation: you can be sure that the Allies will have a ball of yarn CAP over Vladivostok. Massive sweeps by your best modern planes can net you a nice VP haul.

- Strategic control of the Sea of Japan and Tsushima/Fusan is imperative. If you lose it, it nearly doubles the length of coastline you need to protect.

Please go for Tsushima, please go for Tsushima, please ...

quote:

- If you think it's a worthwhile target, I'd consider sending destroyer bombardment raids against the Allied bases off Okinawa and Ishigaki. Stack a couple of dive bomber squadrons on nearby bases in case the Allies take the bait and send ships south.

I've been watching but there isn't much going on there yet. No planes in those bases anyway.

quote:

No defensive stands will happen ni Manchuria outside of x3 hexes if I can help it. I'll set up in those spots and sit until pushed back. I'll shorten the border considerably, and even abandon the majority of the border forts to their fate.

I might be able to do well in the air, but it all depends on how busy Dan (and predecessors) have been training Soviet pilots. The best Soviet fighters should do well, so I have to hope they don't have good defensive skill. They are all probably 75+ exp after flying CAP for years.

Dan will use the Soviet activation as a distraction to whatever else he's planning at the time, so air groups involved may not be as plentiful as I'd like.

quote:

- It's also the only theatre where you'll have naval superiority as well, but be careful! Soviet subs, mines and CD guns are no joke. If Soviet units move into coastal Japanese territory, then go to town on them with your fleet, but I'd really caution against striking Soviet bases as being a bad return.

- Flooding the sea of Japan with air ASW and search will be a requirement as well. The Sovs get 48 subs, scattered all over. At 10 VP a pop, it's worth it to sink a couple.

Now that I've played with the Soviet forces for a year I'm pretty aware of their abilities. The DDs are also good, although few, but I don't have much IJN left either, so they could be used effectively in the Japanese Sea.

FWIW, I remain confident that you can weather the storm and prevent the auto-victory. You'll get horribly mauled, but I think preventing the Auto-vic is the real win here :)

Mauling is what it's all about in 45 for Japan!

I'm curious if he'll open up and play more fluidly, breaking up the mega-DS and making more landings. We'll see. It'll be interesting, but glad I still have a chance to fight.

If Dan is leaving bases exposed, get small units (especially paratroopers) into position and recapture them. They'll probably have some supplies that you can pilfer, and at the very least it will run down the clock.

I've always thought this was forum lore! Is it actually the case that naval assets present in a hex influences pilot survival rates? TMYK.

Yes, certainly confirmed by Devs; I don't recall but it might even be in the manual.

A noobish question: How many VPs are still on the map for the Allies in total China, DEI and the other still occupied territories?

An exellent retreat btw of the victorious Burma army. Regarding your air superority the world wonders if we would see another strictly nothern approach soon.
You get still tankers through? Don't want being rude but ... - - - omg :-)

Couldn't help myself but fall in laughter by Alfred's suggestion... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Quit a lot of base VPs are available in Western China and around Chungking/Chengtu. Since this game as set up has an HR against stra bombing in China it's possible to keep them supplied (thus earning full VPs while the Japanese have them) so I'll prioritise protecting those deep bases from Sian to Lanchow and Chungking of course.

Most of the Burma Army will set up around Nanning and on approaches to Chungking. I'll still defend Canton and Hong Kong heavily, also big VP bases. Shanghai of course is another and is now fairly well defended but the Allies are on the doorstep. It should at least take some doing and maybe earn some troop Ops back if he goes for it.

I've got about 150k resources and 70k oil/60k fuel now approaching through the Bonins toward Tokyo, and a steady stream behind them coming up from Babeldaob. I'm running bigger convoys to make sub activity tougher for the Allies. Lots of Es arriving now which helps.

I've also begun resuming resource shipments from Hokkaido which seems to be forgotten for the moment in the rush to China. There aren't many still being made there but there are about 2 million stored in various bases, so it's a nice stash if I can continue to access them.

It's a decent suggestion. Anything to throw the Allies off at limited risk is good at that stage. By late August I'm just trying to keep my head above water and avoid massive retreating troop losses, so some VPs from airstrikes I choose, which give the Soviets a potential bloody nose, would be great. The rail cut would take only a few of the many troops in Manchuria, and if he does divert some to dig them out, that is fewer marching to Korea.

I just did that!

No supplies in the first one though. Still, if I can take a few it might temporarily interrupt supply flow to the front for Allied troops as well.

It does work. Vlad will have plentiful mines so that may not be a location where subs would work, but other spots could be okay.

A question here. I can't remember if Soviet industry damage nets strategic points for the Japanese? If so, that would be very useful.

Most of my paras are currently in the DEI and retreating from Indochina as fragments on the rails and in middle China. I'll transition them North to start making the Allies stay honest as they're leaving a lot of bases empty once captured.

It could work up there, but I think other options might be deep bases in the North. Since I have long legged transports I could fly up to the Northern rail bases on the trans-siberian as well, I think. I'll look at it.
